just began Kinley MacGregor's Master of Desire, a medieval romance which thus far has
—the hero, a big warrior man whose hands know only how to kill, taking the heroine, a girl who wants love, actually, as his ward in order to keep her dad from fucking with him; at points, she's like "as your guest" and he goes "you mean my hostage" to which she says, "as I was saying, your guest"
—she is absolutely not intimidated by him in the least, even though, among other things, he killed his own dad; and in fact, because she wants to get FUCKED, she's decided she'll seduce him so that he has to marry her
—her maid: well he's never married so maybe he's gay
this girl: no gay guy looks at my tits like that but nice try
—he's actually incredibly socially awkward and FLEES THE ROOM whenever he pops a boner around her, which is to say, every time he's around her (as god intended)
—him, in a full suit of armor, face behind a visor, when this chick shows up with 75 trunks: ARE YOU TAKING YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE TO MY CASTLE???
—her, upon arriving at his house, which literally smells like rot because there is so much shit rotting in there because he's never at home because he's always waging war and killing people throughout europe and also because he hates being at his house: BITCH YOU LIVE LIKE THIS???
—there's like half a chapter of her just dragging him for having a shitty house before deciding that she's going to FLIP! THIS! HOUSE! like she's a property brother
—(during which he's basically seizing with confused lust)

The Holy Mister has arrived. Say "Hi" to Lyle, aka another character from the D&B-verse. 👀
Lyle
Full Name: Lyle Duncan MacGregor
Age: 36
Birthday: 2 October 1987 (Sign: Libra)
Height: 191 cm (6'3”)
Heritage: Scottish (born in Edinburgh, Scotland)
Residing in:
Edinburgh, Scotland (until Winter 2021)
Leeds, England (from Winter 2021; still lives there today)
Job: priest (in the Scottish Episcopal Church, then in The Church of England); part-time Seminary teacher
Relationship status & notable relationships:
divorced from Lillian “Lily” Ramsay (got divorced in 2023, after approximately 14 years of marriage);
had an affair with Blair Macaulay for a little over 3 years; it started towards the end of 2017, and ended in Spring 2021;
he is currently single
Immediate Family:
Duncan MacGregor (father)
Anna Moira “Annie” MacGregor (née Kinley, mother)
Kirstie Jane MacGregor (older sister)
Lester MacGregor (older brother)
Lillian “Lily” Ramsay (ex-wife)
Children: none
A few things to get to know Lyle!
He is a bit of a bookworm. He loves reading, it’s one of his favourite activities, and he has a pretty extensive book collection at home. He has a soft spot for mystery/crime novels.
He can’t function without his morning coffee.
I’m not saying that he might still have some feelings for Blair… but he might still have some feelings for Blair. 😂
Lyle is not as confident as he might appear to be—there are some self esteem issues lurking underneath. He’s kinda working on them, though.
He is quite calm and patient, maybe a tad too much sometimes. Not very confrontational, either, he prefers to look for a peaceful resolution first. That being said, he isn’t without flaw in this regard, he can lose his temper in the “right” circumstances, if he’s being pushed really hard. The best example would be some of the uglier arguments he and his ex-wife had, back when they were still together, which ended up with the two of them saying some pretty nasty things to each other. That’s not who Lyle is, though, and he isn’t proud of those times at all, but yeah, everyone has their limits, and he reached his a few times.
He doesn't have any pets at the moment, but he is considering adopting a cat at some point!
And here are some facts/lore bits I already shared in a previous post a while ago, but I'll copy-paste them here, too, to have them all in one place. 😂
Lyle is a tad more on the introvert side. He tends to be more quiet and reserved, and even if he technically doesn’t mind sharing things about himself or speaking his mind about this and that, chances are he won’t do it unless asked to, or unless he feels comfortable enough around the people he is with. He’s not necessarily the anxious type, he doesn’t mind being in social settings and does just fine. He actually enjoys his time out and interacting with people, especially given his occupation. That being said, his social battery drains faster than that of other people. He needs to have his “alone time” every now and then, otherwise he will get progressively more mentally exhausted.
The move to England, at the end of 2021, was something he and his wife, Lily, agreed to do together, as part of their final attempt to mend their marriage. To start anew, so to speak. Needless to say, it didn't work. Actually, it kiiinda worked for a little while?, but things went downhill once again, eventually. The spark was simply not there anymore, resentments overshadowed the good moments, and the fact that Lyle was still not over Blair yet didn’t help, either. This whole attempt lasted for a little over a year or so, until they (finally!) recognized and accepted the fact that they were simply not meant to be together anymore, and got divorced. Something they should have done AGES ago, mind you, but life is not always just that simple, if ever. 🙂😂 Lyle is currently still living in England, but he visits Scotland when he can.
He comes from a rather conservative family, but his views couldn't be more different (especially when compared to his parents, who are kinda stuck in their ways). Lyle has a very progressive way of thinking, in fact, which is something he has in common with his older sister, Kirstie!
Speaking of family, Kirstie is actually his favourite family member. 😂 Lyle gets along with the rest of his family as well, sure, but their different views on society, people and life matters tend to end up in some unpleasant arguments and snarky remarks. The MacGregor family gatherings are definitely… interesting. He and Kirstie have always resonated incredibly well, though. They have a great relationship! And Kirstie is a pretty cool woman, but we’ll leave that for another time.
There was a time in his life when Lyle struggled with alcohol addiction. It was the easy way of dealing (or not dealing) with the shitty side of life. Just drink it all away, to the point of not remembering why you’ve been drinking in the first place. Not anymore, though. He hasn’t given up on alcohol completely, he still enjoys the occasional glass of whisky or a good ol’ beer, but he is very careful about it now. He most certainly doesn’t want to fall back into those old habits.
Cooking is not one of his strongest skills, but he knows how to make incredibly good homemade bread.

Sword of Darkness  by Kinley MacGregor
Tumblr media
Series: Lords of Avalon #1 Read time: 10 Days Rating: 3/5
The quote: "Why is he so angry at everything?" "It's a comfortable emotion. He understands anger. The other feelings are more confusing. You can be angry and have no feeling other than the anger. But to feel something more tender... it leaves you vulnerable." - Seren and Blaise
I really wanted to love this. I'm a huge fan of Sherri. But I didn't love it. I liked it, but I didn't love it. I loved the characters; Seren, Blaise, and Kerrigan are all wonderful. But the story and the way it was written was not what I wanted to be reading. I can't explain what I wanted to read but this isn't it. I don't think I'll be reading anymore Lords of Avalon though I really like the dragons. I love dragons. I more than like Blaise, I love him. The idea of a blind albino dragon is intriguing and he's charming and loyal. In all of her books there is a character I love and adore, generally a support character, in Sword of Darkness it's Blaise.

Les MacAllister, Tome 3 : Né dans le péché — Kinley MacGregor
Tumblr media

The Consent discourse regarding the sex scenes?
oh boy this is gonna be a long one.
tl;dr up front: MDZS is a romance novel, and I’ve read a lot of romance novels, and I think it handles its consent issues way better than a solid 95% of the other books in this genre that I’ve bothered to go through cover to cover. that being said, nobody should ever have to feel like they need to defend or tolerate something that triggered them, or upset them, or hurt them in some way, and I am absolutely fully in favor of these issues being discussed and talked about in a way that warns people they’re there. I am fully in support of anybody who doesn’t like the book because of the presence of dubiously consensual sex. that’s a super legit reason to be uncomfortable or triggered or upset. I’m also not ever going to say that not liking dubcon in a story is a bad thing. my frustration with the consent discourse is basically that I feel like it’s a conversation being held by people who aren’t familiar with romance as a genre, or with the places where MDZS rises above other romance novels, as well as a conversation that ignores that romance uses sex as a narrative device and a metaphor and not just as an idealized portrayal of true love.
more below the cut - tw: discussions of rape, dubcon, and consent in fiction.
I’m not a scholar of romance novels the way I’m a scholar of Tolkien, so I can’t really trace the development of trends in the genre, but I do read a lot of romance, because I’m a lesbian and I like urban fantasy and historical fiction and stories about women having fun adventures and getting what they want, and romance novels are an easy way to get those things as fast as possible. most of my observations are in this kind of fannish capacity.
but. romance has a consent problem, and it’s had a consent problem as long as the genre has existed.
this isn’t the post for a long drawn-out exploration of things like “how many humans on average tend to have rape fantasies?” or “why is it a statistical average that most people are bottomy in their sexual fantasies, rape or otherwise?” but one of the things that I think is worth bringing up wrt MDZS and WangXian is that constrained consent or a lack of consent and how the characters react to that is often endemic to romance as a genre. and I’m not just talking about sex scenes, either (though we’ll get to the 80s bodice rippers, I promise)
you’ve got plots like “My shitbag father fucked over an angsty rich guy so he’s keeping me hostage in his mansion and I’m not allowed to leave” (Anne Stuart, Night of the Phantom) or “I was going to be executed for stealing food but the local lord took pity on me and brought me to his house explicitly to be his wife and I’ll be expected to sleep with him whether I like it or not” (Amanda Ashley, Beauty’s Beast) or “I’m the heir to a substantial percentage of England in terms of sheer amount of land and I’m an orphan and the King has to marry me off to someone who’s both popular with the common people and strong enough to fend off attempts to seize my assets” (Kinley Macgregor, A Dark Champion). you’ve also got the eternal urban fantasy plot of “I’m a normal human woman/human-seeming woman with Power I Didn’t Know About who saw something forbidden to mortal eyes/otherwise became a target of the bad guys, so now I’m being held against my will by a brooding angsty magical creature so he can Protect Me”. that one is actually worse than a lot of the others because the woman in the standard urban fantasy plot usually tries to escape or constantly talks about how she’s being kept hostage, and it’s intended to be a signpost to the audience that she’s not a weak and passive damsel in distress but that she has Backbone and Intelligence and all that.
all of these are, on some level, about the main character(s) being placed in situations they didn’t consent to, and how they cope with that. (a lot of the time there’s also really clumsily written Threats To The Heroine’s Virtue from a cartoonishly unrealistic would-be rapist, in addition to whatever else is going on. the amount of times that I’ve read a book where a hero all too happy to dubcon his way into the woman’s bed then turns around and saves her from Evil Snidely Whiplash Rapist as a way of proving he’s a good person underneath... sigh.) and a lot of other plots are that way too! the Consent Discourse about MDZS is tapping into a conversation that’s existed wrt romance as a whole for a long time.
here’s why I think MDZS is different from basically every other romance novel: it knows it’s about consent.
the vast majority of the stories I alluded to up there really don’t seem to know that they’re dealing with a plot that centers around the heroine (and sometimes hero) coping with a loss of autonomy. she winds up being totally happy to be held hostage, or married off to some stranger, or protected by a brooding angsty dark magic man, or bound up in destiny and fated to fall in love. the violation of her consent is the framework for getting her in the same environment as her love interest, and we-the-audience are supposed to accept it as - well, if not okay, then acceptable, because it’ll all work out in the end. (there’s a lot of sometimes-unintentional commentary here about how specifically AFAB people in Western societies are often expected to deal with/make the best of/find happiness in situations outside of their control, but that’s also for another post, perhaps.) MDZS doesn’t do that. MDZS addresses the fact that neither Wei Wuxian nor Lan Wangji have been taught how to effectively communicate with one another, and their failings have consequences.
Lan Wangji ambushes WWX and kisses him while he’s blindfolded. This is done without permission, and without WWX even knowing who it is that’s put him in this position. He then goes on to treat it like one of his most egregious moral failings, and lose confidence in his ability to be honorable when it comes to dealing with WWX, and this matters to the story. LWJ viewing what he did as more or less unforgivable means he doesn’t open up to WWX about his feelings, which means WWX has no clue LWJ loves him. And as one of the many consequences to this, they spend the majority of the book married but one party has no idea it’s actually happened! They blunder around, and refuse to acknowledge how they feel, and need alcohol for any semblance of honesty because it breaks down their inhibitions. They almost completely fail at being a couple because when it comes down to brass tacks they cannot spit it out.
this lack of openness and lack of communication manifests in their lives further when it comes to the various dubiously consensual moments of intimacy that they have. their sexual incompatibility is a direct consequence of their failure to talk. they do have problems, and when those problems come to light, they’re meaningful and impactful. there is dubious consent in the first time they have sex, in their making out, in their near misses and their brief meetings. this is the point. they’re not supposed to be a healthy, functional relationship yet. they have sex for the first time and then have to deal with the fact that it happened under false pretenses and due to miscommunication. the theme of the book is learning how to come together and work together. they have to learn to communicate before their dysfunction is fixed.
and they do! the climax of the book is WWX admitting his feelings for LWJ, and LWJ realizing the depth of their miscommunication, and both of them coming together finally. the theme of this book is made manifest in their healing and joining. and only then can they have a true healthy marriage. and I like that? I like that the problems and the issues matter, and that both parties have to resolve it? I also like that just because WWX liked being kissed doesn’t mean his consent wasn’t violated and that this transgression doesn’t matter, because that’s in stark contrast to the 1980s bodice rippers where the heroine can be basically sexually assaulted or raped but it’s totally fine, she secretly enjoyed it so it doesn’t matter. (there’s yet another post I could make here about how this is a direct response to sexual mores harshly applied to women, where the only way they could feel safe admitting their desires was in situations where resistance was impossible, but that’s not for here)
I’m just one person, and this is a lot of text about consent, but ultimately? I like that MDZS deals with these issues realistically. I like that violation and miscommunication and unintentional deception are all weighty and meaningful.
this is one of the most realistic-feeling romance novels I’ve ever read, and its flawed characters that are supposed to be flawed are part of that.

On Ian’s Reading Choices and His State of Mind in Prison
Okay so I don’t know if this has been covered already but I was curious about what books Ian was reading in prison and how this relates to his character so I’ve spent more time than I probably should have trying to compile a list based on one blurry screenshot.
This information serves no purpose really and idk most of these books were probably randomly picked up by the props department but it’s still fun to read into!
Tumblr media
I think it’s safe to say that the prison library probably hasn’t had any new material for a while so we’ll assume that these aren’t all necessarily books that Ian would choose to read in normal circumstances and has picked them up simply to pass the time (but who knows, maybe the guy’s super into romantic fantasy).
I have not read any of these so I’m literally reading multiple books by their covers but whatever. Here’s some pointless half thought out meta based on what Ian read in prison, enjoy!
Detailed thoughts at the end but from top to bottom, left to right we have:
1. Knight of Darkness - Kinley MacGregor (2006)
Tumblr media
This is volume 2 of a fantasy romance series (have you read vol. 1 Ian? U following the story okay?)
2. Circumpolar! - Richard A. Lupoff (1985)
Tumblr media
Pulp Fiction sci-fi fantasy action fun according to google!
3. Fifth Planet - Fred Hoyle & Geoffrey Hoyle (1963)
Tumblr media
4. A for Andromena - Fred Hoyle & John Elliot (1962)
Tumblr media
Some 60s science fiction thrown into the mix
5. The Bard of Sorcery - Gerard Houarner (1986)
Tumblr media
Another Fantasy novel. Well who can blame him, dude’s in prison.
6. Demon 4 - David Mace (1986)
Tumblr media
Set in a fictitious WWIII, dealing with disarming a nuclear bomb. Maybe it appealed to Ian’s old military leanings.
7. Damiano’s Lute - R. A. Macavoy (1984)
Tumblr media
Another romantic fantasy sequel. How likely is it for prisons to have complete series’? Did Ian read the first volume and like it so much he picked up the sequel? Questions that haunt me at night.
Interestingly, in the synopsis we learn that ‘Damiano Delstrego has forsaken his magical heritage to live as a mortal man’ and I may be reaching but you can tie links between that and Mickey giving up his freedom to be with Ian in prison...
8. A Lonely Planet Travel guide for Cambodia (1992)
Tumblr media
I have no idea what the significance of Cambodia is. Maybe Ian is simply fantasizing of being able to go on vacation with Mickey 😭. Perhaps ties into the whole escapism theme there seems to be with this selection of books
9. Out to Canaan - Jan Karon (1997)
Tumblr media
This seems like a kind of slice of life, easy read type book. A bit of realism in amongst all the fantasy and sci-fi.
10. Science and Human Behavior - B. F. Skinner (1953)
Tumblr media
This is an interesting one. Maybe Ian was trying to understand why Mickey shits at the same time everyday who knows.
Jokes aside, there’s some interesting excepts, notably on severe punishment and it’s effects on human behaviour, possibly a very interesting read for someone serving time.
11. Prisoners of Our Thoughts - Alex Pattakos (2008)
Tumblr media
Another non fiction and another fascinating addition in terms of Ian’s character. This book takes the teachings of Victor Frankl and deals with the psychology of finding meaning in your life (something which Ian has often struggled with).
A significant quote being ‘everything can be taken from a man but the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances’
Let’s remember that in season 6, Ian lost his purpose for being entirely, he had no ambitions, no career, no Mickey (😔) but he found his purpose again when he became an EMT, a job which is perfect for someone like Ian who has proven time and time again that all he really wants is to help people. Now, significantly, he’s lost that job and with it that sense of purpose he’d gained. As someone with bipolar disorder, this could have potentially affected him significantly, so for him to choose to read a book like this is a nice insight to his character and I love to see evidence of him doing something positive to take care of his mental well being while in prison.
12. The Holy Bible
Such a minuscule reference to Ian’s Gay Jesus phase, I actually love that they included this though. So by now Ian probably recognizes that he went a little out of control but, idk he went full ham on the bible stuff, and maybe he got some comfort out of some of the verses in there, so it’s cool that he keeps a bible around as part of that storyline.
13. Another bible
(Ian, u good?)
14. Peace like a River - Leif Enger (2001)
Tumblr media
The synopsis describes an ‘unusual family’ in search of their ‘fugitive older brother’. I imagine the actual story itself probably has no parallels with Ian’s story but that line stuck out for me.
Also ‘peace like a river’ is a phrase taken from the bible, so that ties in with Ian’s spirituality again. Maybe he recognised the phrase from memorising verses so the book caught his eye.
15. The very last one I’m struggling to decipher, it looks old, probably a classic from the style of the binding. It might be Othello but I can’t get a clear shot to read the title, hopefully someone else might have some clue.
*
So what does it all mean? I hear no one asking.
While they might seem random, I think we see a lot of Ian’s character in these books.
The sheer amount of fantasy and sci-fi here is quite telling. I think it’s clearly a form of escapism for Ian, he’s trapped in a tiny cell (albeit with the love his life but it’s still fucking tiny in there okay) he’s gonna need some light-hearted adventure somehow.
He’s a guy with a lot of energy, a huge savior complex who just wants to do good. He’s tough, he’s a fighter, but he also has a softer side to him, a gentle nature so I think the romantic fantasy genre is a perfect fit for his character. Maybe there’s a bit of wish fulfillment there as well since watching your bf use the bathroom every night is hardly the most romantic scenario (sorry Mickey).
The non fiction choices are probably my favourite indicators of Ian’s character. I think we learn a lot about him from those choices there; his remaining spirituality, his state of mind, his hopes for the future, his curiosity. I just love the thought of Ian reading travel guides, hoping to one day see more of the world idk. And him reading books on psychology in the hopes of understanding himself and his mind better? We love to see it 👏👏👏
All in all, I think they’re a good fit for him, and I hope he enjoyed reading them!
I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts on this!

Quote
Inside of every being there is a constant war being raged. The part that tell us to do what is right and what is decent and the part of us that is self-serving. The part that wants what it wants regardless of who is hurt getting it.
Kerrigan, Sword of Darkness (Lords of Avalon, Kinley MacGregor) I’ve never seen this sentiment phrased as well as this. It’s something we all need to remember.
