IPL Round Up: Week 1
Toby Reynolds, 18/04/2021
It is one week into the start of the IPL and to everyone’s surprise, Mumbai Indians are not top! RCB have taken the tournament by storm, winning three from three under Virat Kohli’s leadership. At the other end of the table, Sunrises Hyderabad are propping up the table without a win. Although they have played two of the top sides, pundits and fans expected a much better start for Hydrabad.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
RCB have always had a star-studded side but this seems to be the year that it has finally come together. Kohli has moved to the top of the order to replace Aaron Finch, allowing Maxwell to slip in at number four. Maxwell went all of last season without scoring a fifty or hitting any sixes. This season everything seems to have clicked for him and he has returned to the player we know him to be. Maxwell is the leading run scorer with 176 runs at an average of almost 60 with a strike rate of 150. He has been ably assisted by AB de Villiers, who has come in towards the end of the innings and really excelled with a strike rate of 190! He has played two match winning performances so far: taking RCB right to the death against Mumbai and hit 76 against KKR today.
RCB have also been helped on the bowling front by leading wicket taker Harshal Patel and New Zealand pace man Kyle Jamieson. Patel took five in the first match and has continued his form since. Jamieson has been more expensive than Patel but has also chipped in with some handy runs down the order. RCB also have a threatening spin trio of Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed and  Yuzvendra Chahal. All have had impacts on the matches but none with a match winning performance. As the tournament continues, I expect them to take more wickets and become more dangerous with the balls due to the pitches wearing.
Delhi Capitals
Last years runners up have had a varied start to season with a high scoring win and tight loss. They have an Indian packed batting line up with fifties for Dhawan, Shaw and Pant so far and have relied on Woakes in the first match and Rabada in the second to take wickets alongside opening bowler Avesh Khan. Surprise package of last season, Anrich Nortje is yet to play due to Woakes’ performances in the first matches while Nortje was playing for South Africa. It is likely he will come in for Tom Curran or Steve Smith as the tournament progresses. Curran has struggled to make a good impact on the tournament so far, being hit by Chris Morris to lose the match against Rajasthan and Smith can interchange with Indian vice captain Ajinkya Rahane as an anchor at number three.
Delhi will be hoping for their top order too keep making runs and converting their fifties into large scores and hopefully hundreds. Aussie all rounder, Marcus Stoinis has failed to score many runs yet and was hit for 15 in his one over of the tournament but todays innings bodes well as he guided Delhi to what turned out to be an easy chase after Dhawan batted very impressively for his 92.
Mumbai Indians
Rohit Sharma’s side were heavy favourites before the tournament started and since their first match against RCB have shown why. They lost a tight first match but have since shown they can hold their nerve against KKR and Sunrises in two matches that went right down to the wire. Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya have used the spinning wickets of Chennai well and are leading the attack well with Bumrah and Boult dominating at the death with perfect execution of their yorkers.
Their three matches have been low scorers with no side passing 160 yet which hasn’t allowed for their long batting line up to show off its skill. Suryakumar Yadav has continued his form from 2020 and leads their side in runs scored and is the only player in their squad to pass fifty. The return of Quinton de Kock seems to have made their batting line up more rounded, even after Lynn scored 49 in their season opener but Pollard and Hardik Pandya have not managed to find their form from the last few seasons as finishers.
Chennai Super Kings
CSK are surprisingly high on this table in my opinion (even if it due to Net Run Rate). They have a very mixed squad. It is full of all rounders with Bravo and Thakur down at numbers nine and ten, but their average age is extraordinarily high. They have six players over the age of 35 and half of their squad over 30. Dhoni seemed to have lost it a bit last year in the UAE and hasn’t found the form he had in the early years of the tournament.
Sam Curran and Moeen Ali are the two English players in the squad and have both been in fine form so far. Moeen Ali has shown why he was wasted sitting on the RCB bench over the past few years. He is their top scorer after two matches and is striking at 150, while Sam Curran is coming in lower down the order but still smashing the ball all round the park. He has a strike rate over 200 and won the battle against his older brother in the first match, taking him for over 20 in an over.
CSK failed to win the first match after a slow start meant they put up a score of 188, well below par and allowed the Delhi Capitals to chase it down with eight balls spare. In the second match, Deepak Chahar tore through the Punjab Kings top order taking 4-13 and limiting Punjab to 106 before they chased it down in 15 overs.
Rajasthan Royals
The English contingent of the IPL have had two ok first games. They have heavily relied on captain Sanju Samson in the first match, who blasted his third IPL century and was a few metres away from hitting a six off the final ball and carrying his side home to victory against Punjab Kings. The main controversy of this match was that Samson turned down a single off the penultimate ball to put Chris Morris on strike needing four to win. Morris was visibly angry to be sent back by his captain but in my opinion, Samson was more likely to hit a boundary (either the six needed to win or a four to take it to a super over) than his South African counterpart. The one criticism I have would be that Samson could have possibly come back for two and sacrificed Morris at the non-strikers end but would have risked running himself out.
Morris then showed why he Samson should have taken the single in the Royals second match, bludgeoning 36 from 18 after David Miller fell for 62. After the match, Morris said he knew his role was to slog at the end and was happy to do it for the team.
The biggest new for Rajasthan was that Ben Stokes would be out for three months and the rest of the tournament due to a fractured finger in the first match. This allows fellow Englishman Jos Buttler to slide up to the top of the order and Miller to take his place in the middle order. Buttler had an outstanding tournament a few years ago after he moved to the top of the order for Rajasthan and dominated so it is not all bad news for Royals fans.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Before the tournament, I predicted KKR would just about make the cut for the playoffs due to Eoin Morgan’s captaincy and their world class overseas players. This hasn’t been the case yet. Morgan has failed to fire with the bat; Russel, one of the most devastating batsmen ever in both T20 cricket and the IPL, has been more use with the ball; and both Shakib and Cummins haven’t made the biggest impact yet. I am sure this will soon change though.
For the first three matches, KKR have relied on their home grown talent at the top of the order to score their runs. Rana, Gill and Tripathi have all made runs at a good rate but KKR have failed to push on from being in good positions in matches with a lack of quick runs down the order. Against Mumbai, “DreRus” took 5-15 from two to slow Mumbai in the final few overs. However, he then struggled with the bat and scored a tentative 9 from 15 as KKR fell 10 runs short.
KKR have failed to win the tight matches so far which seems to be due to a lack of finishing ability from the middle order, if they can fix this problem (and with Morgan as captain, I am sure they can) then I think they have a good chance of finishing in the top four.
Punjab Kings
Even with KL “King Legend” Rahul averaging over 70 at 150, Punjab Kings (formerly King’s XI Punjab) have struggled so far this year. They have just lost to Dehli Capitals after setting an impressive 195 to win but their inexperienced bowling line up failed to defend it. Rahul and Agrawal put on 122 with Agrawal smashing 69 from 36, while his partner crawled along to 61 off 51 before Hooda and Shahrukh Khan came in to blast the ball round at the end.
This was the second high scoring match they have been apart of. They have a strong and experienced top order but have a younger and less experienced bowling line up and almost no tail a Richardson bats at number seven. Arshdeep Singh is only 22 and this is both Meredith and Richardson’s first seasons in the IPL. Shami is their only seam bowler over 25, but is backed up by two experience spinners. You could see this inexperience in the match vs Delhi as Dhawan took the game away from Punjab. As the tournament progresses, it will be interesting to see how the younger players will adapt to conditions and deal with an increase in pressure and if Punjab try to lengthen their batting lineup.
Sunrises Hyderabad
David Warner’s side are sat at the bottom of the table without a win. They have lost three close matches. With three players in the top 11 for runs scorers so far, you might expect such a strong squad to be further up the table, but the lack of power hitters down the order seems to be catching up with Sunrises. Bairstow slotted in at number four in the first matches to accommodate for Saha up the top and performed well but struggled to stay at the crease during the key moments. He was caught slogging across the line when Hyderabad were in a commanding position, causing a batting collapse and loss against KKR and has since moved back up to opening.
Hyderabad have been changing their team a huge amount so far during the IPL. They have played six overseas players, as well as having Kane Williamson on the sideline. Hyderabad were often selected as the side most likely to steal the crown from Mumbai before the season started but unless they can find some finishers, it seems unlikely that this will happen.
Rashid Khan, as usual, has been performing very well. He has four wickets with an economy rate of 5.33. He hasn’t blown any teams away yet, but arguably more importantly, his economy is under six, building pressure and helping others in the side take wickets. If he can keep this up, it is likely Hyderabad will continue restricting oppositions to low totals.
Predictions
From the first week it is always hard to tell how the season will progress. I think it is likely that Mumbai, RCB and Delhi will progress to the knock-out stages but the fourth place is up for grabs. Right now I think I would go for KKR, just because they haven’t hit their heights yet and I can see them start winning matches they shouldn’t if Morgan and Russell get into form.

IPL 2020, RR vs KXIP: Sanju Samson Reveals Why Rahul Tewatia Was Promoted To No. 4
After gaining an improbable win against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rajasthan Royals' batsman Sanju Samson hailed Rahul Tewatia for not giving up and rising to the occasion when it really mattered. His remark came as Rajasthan Royals chased down a total of 224 to defeat KXIP by four wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday. For Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson, Steve Smith, and Rahul Tewatia all scored 50+ scores to give the side a victory by four wickets. Tewatia came out to bat at number four and he was struggling at one stage as he had scored just 13 runs from his first 19 balls. However, in the 18th over bowled by Sheldon Cottrell, Tewatia hit five sixes to turn the tide. The left-handed batsman played a knock of 53 as Rajasthan gained an improbable victory. "I think it was the team management's decision to send Tewatia at number four," Samson said during the post-match press conference.
"We have been really working hard on Rahul Tewatia. He is a proper leg-spinner (but) the management saw the batting ability he had during the training sessions (and) they decided to send him up the order. It was a brave move and it paid off," he added. Hailing Tewatia's performance, Samson said: "It was a really good performance from him. Tewatia showed a lot of heart, he never gave up. He was so down and I could see that (but) he had the ability to come back and strike those 30 runs off an international bowler, in the coming tournament he will be crucial to us." Sanju Samson had played a knock of 74 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and he followed it up with an 85-run knock against Kings XI Punjab. Talking about his approach during the chase of 224 against Punjab, Samson said: "During the chase, there was just one way to go. Tt is easier in terms of thought process when you are chasing 220+, it was more about 'see the ball and hit the ball'." For the match against Punjab, Rajasthan had left out Yashasvi Jaiswal and David Miller to bring in Ankit Rajpoot and Jos Buttler.
Talking about these selections, Samson said: "Sharjah is tough for bowlers, we wanted to add one more bowler so we left out Yashasvi and we brought in Ankit Rajpoot. Definitely, with Jos Buttler in the squad, he has to play in the team. It's a given and David Miller understood that."

RR vs MI Live Score: Rajasthan face Mumbai in must-win encounter | Cricket News
LIVE BLOG Hello and welcome to the Live coverage of the IPL 2020 match between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians. PREVIEW: Skipper Rohit Sharma‘s fitness would be a concern for defending champions Mumbai Indians as they aim to continue their dominant run, while a depleted Rajasthan Royals would hope to stay afloat when the two teams clash in an IPL match. Mumbai roared back to form by crushing Chennai Super Kings by 10 wickets on Friday after their Super Over loss to the Kings XI Punjab. RR, on the other hand, lost to the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in their last game. Table-toppers MI are on course to make it to the play-offs but the game is crucial for Rajasthan, who are languishing at seventh place and a loss would mean a step closer to elimination. Questions remain on whether Rohit, who suffered a hamstring injury and missed the game against CSK, will be available on Sunday for MI. But Rohit’s absence was hardly felt on Friday as the young Ishan Kishan (261 runs) launched into CSK bowlers with gusto. So did Quinton De Kock (368 runs), continuing his sublime run. In the event of Rohit missing out on Sunday as well, the two will open again. Mumbai’s middle-order has also been among runs — be it Suryakumar Yadav (243 runs), Hardik Pandya (164 runs), swashbuckling West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard (208 runs) or Krunal Pandya (82 runs). With their big-hitting ability, the Pandya brothers and Pollard are a threat to any opposition. MI bowlers are also wreaking havoc, especially New Zealand left-arm pacer Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah, who are lethal upfront and in the death. The two have accounted for 33 wickets, while Australian Nathan Coulter-Nile (2 wickets) has supported the duo. Spinners Krunal (5 wickets) and Rahul Chahar (13 wickets) are equally aggressive in the middle overs. For Rajasthan, the biggest worry is the form of skipper Steve Smith, who has made 265 runs from 11 matches and a mis-firing top-order. In the course of the season, Rajasthan have made constant changes at the top and that has hurt them badly. The team does possess quality players like Ben Strokes (110 runs), Sanju Samson (272 runs) and Jos Buttler (271 runs), but the trio has failed to deliver collectively. With two crucial points at stake, the management would be hoping that the three click on Sunday, something which has not happened this season. All-rounder Rahul Tewatia (224 runs and 7 wickets) has been a revelation with both the bat and ball, but too much is being left for him to achieve. On the bowling front too, RR lack consistency. Only Jofra Archer (15 wickets) has been effective with his pace but has failed to get support from fellow pacers Karthik Tyagi, Jaydev Unadkat and Ankit Rajpoot, who have 12 wickets combined. Spinner Shreyas Gopal has leaked 343 runs from 11 games. Stokes, as a bowler, has also been unimpressive and has failed to get a single wicket so far. RR head coach Andrew McDonald said the team has not been able to be at its best and it chances of making the play-offs are fading. “Our destiny is probably in other teams’ hands now and as for us we need to keep believing, our challenge is seven wins and we’ll try to give our best to achieve that,” he conceded. Teams (From): Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (c), Aditya Tare, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Chris Lynn, Dhawal Kulkarni, Digvijay Deshmukh, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, James Pattison, Jasprit Bumrah, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mohsin Khan, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Prince Balwant Rai, Quinton De Kock, Rahul Chahar, Saurabh Tiwary, Sherfane Rutherford, Suryakumar Yadav, Trent Boult. Rajasthan Royals: Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Sanju Samson, Andrew Tye, Kartik Tyagi, Steven Smith (c), Ankit Rajpoot, Shreyas Gopal, Rahul Tewatia, Jaydev Unadkat, Mayank Markande, Mahipal Lomror, Oshane Thomas, Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Anuj Rawat, Akash Singh, David Miller, Manan Vohra, Shashank Singh, Varun Aaron, Tom Curran, Robin Uthappa, Aniruddha Joshi, Jofra Archer.

MI dominate KXIP to win their 2nd game of the Season convincingly!
Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab
Game analysis and Post match thoughts
Location: Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi
Tumblr media
KL Rahul                                                                                       Rohit Sharma
Match 13 of Dream 11 IPL 2020 was played between the Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab in Abu Dhabi on the 1st of October. The Kings XI have been looking very promising this year with some great performances notably against the Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals where they were robbed of a victory in both games in my opinion. Mumbai on the other hand started off poorly against CSK, got back to winning ways vs KKR and almost won but then lost to RCB in the super over. It has been a roller coaster ride for the two teams ever since the tournament started. Let’s get into the game!
Tumblr media
Your team’s latest league standings are right here!
Kings XI Punjab won the toss with skipper KL Rahul opting to bowl first. Yet another toss lost for Mumbai Indians. Mumbai’s batting started poorly after Quinton de Kock got out by Sheldon Cottrell who conducted his unique salute celebration. Suryakumar Yadav was next to bat and got off to a good start with the bat but unfortunately got run out by Mohamed Shami. Ishan Kishan the star of the show vs RCB came out to bat with his captain and gave Rohit Sharma strike the majority of the time but did hit a six and a couple of fours but it was not quite his day this time as he got out to a catch near the boundary. Pollard then came to the crease to put runs on the board with his skipper and in that process Rohit Sharma reach a half century, his second of the season showing he was in form. He hit a few more boundaries and sixes after his 50 but soon got out after a brilliant boundary line link up catch between Glenn Maxwell and Jimmy Neesham which was so so unlucky for Rohit but we have to give credit to Maxwell for his awareness and brilliant fielding. Hardik Pandya and Pollard did what they do best in the last three overs hitting 52 runs and securing a total of 191 runs for the Mumbai Indians with the last over being the most entertaining where 4 sixes were hit! Kings XI Punjab needed to have a good opening partnership if they wanted to get the 2 points (win the game) and they do have the opening pair to do just that consisting of skipper KL Rahul and his fellow Indian teammate Mayank Agarwal. Both hammered Trent Boult and James Pattinson in the first few overs but struggled once Krunal Pandya was introduced to the attack. Overall Punjab got off to a decent start but that was cancelled out by a classic Jasprit Bumrah yorker. Karun Nair came next but was only dismissed by Krunal Pandya after he played the ball on to the stumps which was quite unfortunate. Nicholas Pooran came next and hit one of Krunal’s deliveries out of the stadium. That hit probably sent the ball straight to the highway. Pooran got going hitting some beautiful shots while his captain on the other hand for the first time this season, was struggling. KL Rahul’s innings eventually came to an end after a superb Rahul Chahar googly went straight to the stumps as the Punjab skipper attempted to sweep. Next came Glenn Maxwell who also never really got going  and Pooran’s game also started slowing down a bit. Pooran would eventually be dismissed a few runs before getting a half century by James Pattinson where the ball edged his bat and went straight to de Kock. It was now all up to Maxwell as all of the Kings XI batsmen were dismissed and only a couple of tail-enders left to come. Unfortunately for the Kings XI, he was dismissed by Rahul Chahar after mis-timing a shot which went straight to Trent Boult who doesn't drop too many catches. Jimmy Neesham soon followed after a high full toss by Jasprit Bumrah which went straight to Suryakumar Yadav. A couple of wickets soon followed and that was the end of the match. The final score for the Kings XI Punjab was 143 for 8 wickets giving the Mumbai Indians a victory by 48 runs and firing them to the top of the table.
Tumblr media
Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard
The game was great for Mumbai Indians, not too great for KXIP who have got to up their game if they want to qualify for the knockout stages. The game was decent, more fun when Mumbai was batting and a bit less fun when Punjab was batting. Some of my favourite moments in the game were Maxwell’s and Neesham’s catch, Pollard and Hardik last 3 over spell, Rohit Sharma getting another half century and Rahul Chahar’s wickets. Going forward both teams certainly have to improve but I think Mumbai Indians will have a better chance of finishing in the top 4 this season as compared to KXIP. We have got the Sun Risers Hyderabad game on October 4th in Sharjah, UAE. Let’s go for the win in that game and take advantage of the current form that SRH are in.

IPL 2020, KXIP vs SRH: Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad face off in a must-win encounter | Cricket News

IPL 2020, KXIP vs SRH: Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad face off in a must-win encounter | Cricket News
Tumblr media
The late resurgence of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the tournament has spiced up the race for playoff berths. They are finally looking like a team with three consecutive victories, but cannot afford to be complacent as their next opponents, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), also registered a convincing eight-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals on Thursday. In the last three matches, Kings XI have survived a double Super Over against Mumbai Indians, the last-ball finish against Royal Challengers Bangalore, and scored a thumping five-wicket win over table-toppers Delhi Capitals. IPL 2020 POINTS TABLE Kings XI’s primary strength is the opening pair of KL Rahul (540) and Mayank Agarwal(398), who are among the top three run-scorers this season. With Chris Gayle coming at first down, both the openers have got the licence to go after the bowling right from the beginning. Gayle, who has only played three matches in the tournament, has shown that he is still a force to reckon with in the T20 format. Gayle set the tone for their chase against Capitals by scoring 26 runs off Tushar Deshpande. The opening pair’s success has meant that the middle order has been left a bit undercooked. But in the last match, both Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell came good. The latter getting back among the runs is a big boost for Kings XI.
Tumblr media
Death bowling will still be a concern for them, although Mohammed Shami (16 wickets), is the second leading wicket-taker after Delhi Capitals’ Kagiso Rabada. It will be interesting to see if Chris Jordan will be brought back in the playing XI to boost their death bowling or the team management keeps Jimmy Neesham, who did fairly well with both bat and ball. SRH can’t afford to slip up even one bit after getting their campaign back on track. They have ended their losing streak of three matches but their primary concern is inconsistency. David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey have contributed in a few games but have lacked consistency. When two or more of them fail, the pressure shifts to their very young middle order. It’s high time their youngsters, Priyam Garg and Abdul Samad, started taking more responsibility.
Tumblr media
On the positive side, Jason Holder, who was brought as a replacement for the injured Mitchell Marsh, impressed in his first match. The West Indies Test skipper came up with figures of 3 for 33 while also affecting a run out against Rajasthan. Overall, there’s no clear favourite entering the contest. Both teams need to win their remaining four games to stay in the contention for the playoffs.
