Hi friend! I am a resident kh fan who's been into the games for over 10 years. I actually started the bc my friend forced me to play twewy, I loved it, and she was like ~ooooo~ these characters are in KH you should play it~~
Little did I know that at the time, it was literally the last game in the series that they were in lol.
But! Here's a handy dandy guide if you would like to get into them!
There's a lot of different numbers for the games but repeat numbers and extensions, are just different versions of the games. So don't worry about "2.5" or "0.2" necessarily.
Ok!
So the game order to play:
Kingdom Hearts
Chain of Memories
Kingdom Hearts 2
358/2 Days
Birth by Sleep
Re:coded
Dream Drop Distance
KH UX
0.2 Fragmentary Passage
Kingdom Hearts 3
Melody of Memory
I know it's a lot but luckily, they made it really easy by bundling remakes together. There's a game called 1.5+2.5 and that's just the first 6 titles. 2 games (days and re:coded) were just made into cutscene movies so you don't have to play them. I highly recommend just watching the scenes for Chain of Memories bc it's a very different type of gameplay and a lot of people don't like that one as much, but it's important to the story. One little thing I don't like about the bundle is it switches the order for kh2 and days. Try to keep that in mind. Then after that you need 2.8. It will have a remake of DDD, a cutscene movie of the original plot of khux (mobile game), and 0.2. It's a new extra chapter to birth by sleep. It's pretty short but still important. You can find these all put together for PS4 (and PC I think?) called Kingdom hearts the story so far
Then KH3!! The game many were waiting for so so long. (Make sure to include the dlc scenes)
After that is Melody of Memory. It's a rhythm game that only has about half an hour of actual important plot.
Then the mobile game. Which unfortunately had been shut down but you can find videos of the entire plot in chronological order. Oh and an extra little story called dark road. That is what has baldur.
So to summarize:
1.5+2.5 remix
2.8
Kh3
Melody of Memory
Mobile game
(and you can condense it more by getting 1.5+2.5 and 2.8 in one bundle and watching MoM and KHUX on YouTube)
The only purchases would be story so far bundle, and kh3.
Sorry this is a long ask but I felt like it's important to explain all the different titles. Feel free to message me if you have any questions!
Oh geez tysm!!
Its very kind of you to type out a guide for a series with like...man 11 whole games??? There's a RHYTHM GAME??? With PLOT IMPORTANCE??? I mean I guess I'm not too surprised. I don't think there's much this franchise can do to surprise me anymore - knock on wood (<- just learned about Baldr mass murder like three hours ago)
Anyways, it's good to know that there's a bundle game out there to make things easier for newcomers! Yknow a few months ago I stumbled across one of them - I think it was 358/2 Days - at a second-hand game store. I didn't grab it right away and kind of regretted it (I mean I tried to play neo twewy first, might as well have a simialrly awkward introduction to kh), so I drove right back a few days later and the thing was ALREADY gone! Would've been cool to own, but my main concern with getting into this franchise was that I'd miss games due to them running on out-of-date consoles or else being rare or pricey, so I'm glad there's still an easy way to play it via bundle!
I mean with a name like that who can resist
I'm gonna have to look into this later...winter break plans perhaps? 👀 The twewy-kh pipeline feels inevitable so I might as well embrace it.
And if I procrastinate well hey, there's always a chance there'll be twewy crossover pt. 2 in the upcoming game, and if Sho's there I swear I WILL drop everything to play game # fourtwelve in a franchise I've never touched before. That is a promise.
#I really appreciate it!! I feel like every time Ive tried to look this up Ive gotten a different answer#or maybe all the 2.5s .0s 3.14152s just confused me#im preeeetty sure ive seen 1.5 + 2.5 kicking around a nearby gamestore before! itll be good to dust off the old ps4#look out world. fable kingdom hearts era is on the horizon (possibly. maybe.)#ref#asks

Every single time I see a Kingdom Hearts post from you I always think about getting into it but I literally have no clue where or how to start
If you wanna get into Kingdom Hearts, start with Kingdom Hearts 1! Ignore whatever play order people have, release order is always best.
I actually started with Birth By Sleep though. It's a prequel game, so you won't notice the nods it throws to other games, but it's also a great starting point in my opinion. And the gameplay is better than kh1.
KH has basically everything in the PS4 collections, if you have that console. I own the 1.5+2.5 collection, which has everything up to KH3. You can just go down from top to bottom. Every game before KH3 (excluding the mobile games) is included in "The Story So Far" collection.
The switch ports suck ignore them
If you dont wanna play em, watch cutscene compilations or letsplays! It's what I did! the first kh game i ever played myself was kh3. I binged basically the whole series in movie format. There's no shame in it! Lots of people haven't played Chain of Memories, and never will. I still havent beaten all of bbs, or ddd. I've finished like. half. of all kh games at most.
If you want an order from me, let's see if I remember it all!
Kingdom Hearts 1
Re:Chain of Memories
358/2 Days
Kingdom Hearts 2
Birth By Sleep
Re:coded
Dream Drop Distance
Union Cross
Back Cover
0.2 Fragmentary Passage
Kingdom Hearts 3 (including re:mind)
Melody of Memory
Dark Road
The big hurdle here tends to be Union Cross. Some of it is relevant to KH3, but a lot of it came out after kh3, too.
However! There's an easy solution to this now! The Kingdom Hearts Union Cross Fandub! I'd recommend checking out Part 1 of the dub before kh3, and the rest after.
A word of advice: the story of kh isn't nearly as nonsensical or confusing as people make it out to be. If you just follow the games in release order and watch out for Secret Reports and Secret Endings in the games that have them, you'll get it. Even if you don't, the emotional core of the story is much more important than exact lore discussion.
The games are a great emotional journey. Yeah, they're corny, and cringe, but they're honest, and fun, and I have sobbed a fair number of times.
It can be intimidating to get into a series that long, but I recommend taking the plunge!
#Feli gets asked#i could put more notes here about what 're' means and final mixes and hd mixes and-#but i wont cuz it doesnt matter#i hope you have fun! i know i did!

Vs. Phantom Aqua first fight. Screen settings messed up again, I have to adjust them for each game manually. This game is called Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage-, but I call it 0.2 for short. It’s basically a demo for III but it has a completely original plot with Aqua as the main character. Recording fights for this and III is going to be a bit harder since they seamlessly transition between cutscenes and gameplay, as can be seen in the video.
Submitted by @captainsquare
So it is a actual release then, nice. Plot still plays into cannon I hope, silly to not but some companies like doing that
This looks rad, graphics and colours and everything just look amazing also looks fun too.
I’m looking forward to whatever vids you can get of it as well as whatever info you feel like passing on to explain things

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage- (what a mouthful) beat March 26th.
Neat 3 hour tech demo for KH3, adds cool additional lore and uses a very funny way to keep continuity. Gameplay is a solid start for what became KH3's great combat. Wave of Darkness slaps!!!!

For actual gameplay, I also recommend Everglow's channel! He's got an excellent playlist with Unchained χ AND Union Cross gameplay:
He's also got a playlist and cutscene compilation for Dark Road, though those are both outdated as of August 2022, cutscene-wise.
And if you're looking for something to watch during the wait for Missing-Link and KH4 news, might I recommend his Timeline series? He's updated the earliest videos (chronologically speaking) to include the ending of Union Cross and (up-to-date) Dark Road cutscenes up to Birth By Sleep, and currently it's only up to the ending of 0.2, but he's planning to continue it through KH3 once we get a KH4 release date! Though I only recommend watching it after you've watched the original order since it cuts them up significantly.
You can also download the Union Cross Dark Road app for free and play the offline version of Dark Road, view Union Cross cutscenes, and create your own Keyblade wielder. The KHUX cutscenes in the app are organized by world and not in chronological order, however, so I would still watch Everglow's compilation and/or Damo's fandub for the more accurate story.
Damo's also planning a Dark Road dub sometime in the near future so be on the lookout for that!
union x fans please tell me where i can watch gameplay bc i am overwhelmed by options and i really want to know what happens
#rb#KHUX#Dark Road#Everglow#Damo#reference#this is a good start for my “intro to Kingdom Hearts” document lol#I'll be adding a link to the Dark Road dub once it releases

Of course Kingdom Hearts would have an oxymoron title such as: "Final chapter: Prologue" xD
Sidenote: Who the fuck is Aqua and when was she first introduced? Cause I must have started playing a later game with her cause the game definitely acted as if I should already know her. Someone please tell me when she makes her first appearance and in which game? xD

As my kh mutual I'm curious on your KH game rankings like which ones you like the most -> least
OK im finally getting around to this. birth by sleep is my absolute favorite!! but this is also sort of part of a larger thing ive been thinking about which is like, the core kingdom hearts experience. imo the first ~5 kingdom hearts games are just a really good story, i think that the entire series is great obviously BUT i think that kh1, com, days, kh2, and then birth by sleep are just!!! so good! (i excluded re:coded bc all kh games are important but re:coded is very weird) i actually think that the gameplay in com really sucks on ps4 but its so important to the plot that i can't hate it. so imo if you want to have a good, solid, relatively uncomplicated kh experience then you should play those 5
that was pretty long winded but yeah, kh1, com, days (the ds version not the movie), kh2, and bbs are my favorites <3 re:coded is... strange, like i said. dream drop distance looks great and the drop system is interesting but i think the concept of the "real" organization xiii is horrible. kh3 is not my favorite but it has its strong points. 0.2 is fine, and i have no opinions on khux and khdr bc i havent played them, except for that im the biggest xehanort hater in the world. melody of memory... didnt finish that one. am i forgetting any games.

Kingdom Hearts Cheat Sheet
KHUx & Back Cover: All Important Cutscenes/Best Order [Full Movie/Complete Story][Watch after DDD]:
“Every important Kingdom Hearts Union Cross cutscene, and all the Back Cover cutscenes spliced into one video. A tremendous amount of capturing and editing went into this project; it's the culmination of 8 years of story told in one location. This is the complete story so far, the entire Kingdom Hearts Chi, Unchained Chi, Back Cover and Union Cross story in one place. Enjoy!” -damo279
KINGDOM HEARTS TIMELINE:
( ...it is composed of all the Kingdom Hearts titles released so far placed in chronological order. Beware – the events are actually settled chronologically. Which means that every single cutscene and/or gameplay part will follow the exact order of the events of the saga. For instance, Sora's story won't begin until Aqua's story ends in KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-, even though this game is a flashback told after the events of KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance....)- Everglow
Note:The Union x segment for Everglow are not complete due to this being made before the game ended)

Possibilities for the Next KH Game
A Fragmentary Passage Vol II
At the end of Birth By Sleep, we saw a montage of past events but from different perspectives of the story.
Riku's side in KH1 & 358
Kairi's side in KH2 w/ HP&O
Mickey & Aqua in ROD which became 0.2 in its entirety.
I think Nomura may be attempting another Fragmentary Passage with a split storyline. Who will be accompanying who is told through the Melody of Memory ending, but I think it was also hinted at within the opening and boxart of KH3.
The first storyline is Mickey's adventures in Scala ad Caelum to find the Ancient Keyblade Masters, the Foretellers. But with Donald and Goofy going world hopping again, would he really go all alone? Even if he does, maybe things will get hairy and he might need backup. This is where I think the Days trio might come into play. In the final shot of the kh3 opening, they are parallel to Mickey, but form a triangle with Riku. This could mean Mickey and the Days trio check out Scala ad Caelum/Daybreak Town and from there journey to Quadratum, probably in Shinjuku with Riku.
The second storyline would be Kairi's training arc with Aqua. I'm not entirely sure how this story would work out, but Ventus still has a piece of Darkness/Vanitas inside of him which killed Strelitzia. (If she was an original princess of heart and Darkness wanted her gone, it may attempt to dispatch Kairi.) There's a lot tied to Ventus/Kairi and the past of Union-X, so I can't pinpoint just one. Also the Wayfinder trio is standing behind Kairi's side, specifically Ventus is aligned behind her. Kairi and Ventus are both pure hearts of light, were both in Sora's heart, have ties to the Age of Fairytales and were both prominent resources for Xehanort to acquire Kingdom Hearts and the X-blade.
All I know about Donald & Goofy is that this may be when they go back in time to Daybreak Town in their Union-X cameo which would explain why they so further back compared to everyone else.(courtesy of damo279)
On the KH3 box art it may have slightly hinted at Limit Cut and Melody of Memory.
The realms are layered from top to bottom as:
Kingdom Hearts
Sleep/Death(Final World)
Light
Twilight/Between
Darkness
The Wayfinder trio is in the ROD.
Days trio is in the ROL with Namine underneath them and behind the Wayfinder trio because she controls memories which are smaller(in-betweens) parts of every realm.
The Destiny trio is above both and are staring in the direction of the clock with XIII numbers on it. This could mean they are responsible for assembling the 13 guardians of light to combat the Master.
The most important one here is Mickey. He's looking at the tower with seven black figures adorning it which are confirmed to be the Foretellers and the Master. And of course we learned at the end of Melody of Memory that Mickey is looking for the Foretellers.
The Master's Origin Story
Nomura said the next Kingdom Hearts game which was already being developed "would surprise us".
I cannot imagine anybody expecting a game with The Master as the main playable character, as we discover how he became who he is today. We know Keyblades, Keyblade Masters and the Keyblade War were still a thing when he was a boy, so we could still have the same gameplay we have for almost every Kingdom Hearts game. This game could even be set up for KH4 without giving away everything about his current plan and all of the secrets he's still got up his sleeve.

Non Spoiler Review of Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory:
I am really bad at rhythm games, like I struggled with that mini game in Birth By Sleep with those damned ducks! I played this whole game (save from a few) on Beginner. The whole experience was amazing, though some stages were harder than others. I can't really talk about gameplay seeing as I'm bad with a game like this but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
I'd say one of my favourite parts of the game were the scenes from dream drop distance as well as birth by sleep.
Story wise, it was short but trust me it serves as a perfect gateway to the next game. As a Kairi stan I loved it tbh, just her role in this game highlights how important she actually is and shows that she's more than just a useless princess. Also I had a huge smile on my face when I saw Ienzo, Ansem and Even.
Speaking of Kairi, this girl is a goddamn badass in this girl. I'm just saying she's more than sweet this girl will fight anyone who hurts Sora or anyone she loves. And I love this version of Kairi. She's strong willed, determined yet realistic and not reckless at all. She knows her limits in the story and it's just...amazing. This... THIS is the best version of herself and reminded me so much of KH2 Kairi.
I'd say the only disappointment in this game is that 2 worlds which I expected to be in the game wasn't and those were; The Caribbean and Symphony of Sorcery. The latter was one of the few things that REALLY got me excited for this game. I also noticed they didn't include any tunes 0.2 Fragmentary Passage either but they did include like 2 songs from Re:Coded which confuses me. I dont think Wave of Darkness is in the game but it is in the demo.
Edit: Wave of Darkness is in there! It probably appeared after completing the dream drop distance worlds.
All in all this game is solid and mind you I've never played a rhythm game save from that cursed level in Birth by Sleep.
Gameplay: 8/10
Plot: 8.5/10
Graphics: 9/10
Music: 10/10; ending music slaps hard
Kairi: 10/10
Total: 9/10

2 and 9 for aqua?
Sure thing, Clara! Thank you very much for these!!~
(question source: "vidjya game self ship asks" by kittyandco)
2) Which genre of game is your F/O from? - Um.. I have a bad grasp of these sorts of things usually, but from what I was able to research, most of the Kingdom Hearts games are classified as action RPGs, and that includes Birth by Sleep, which is the first one to feature Aqua! The exceptions would possibly be games with different playstyles like KHX/KHUX or CoM or Melody of Memory.
9) Do you actually like your F/O’s combat/play style? - Yes! Admittedly, the only experience I myself have had playing as Aqua is in a mod for KH3, since.. I never actually played that game all the way to the end to reach the boss fights where you do get to play as her normally. But from that experience, and the gameplay I’ve watched of her in action (0.2, for instance), I really like her playstyle! She’s very graceful and fun to play as because of her movement being really good, and I feel that magic is quite underused in KH since there’s so much other combat potential in combos and stuff, so the fact that her playstyle is meant to revolve around magic is nice to see.
Thank you very much again for these!! I hope my answers were alright~
#a call from the void#selfship#selfshipping#love: wayfinding waters (aqua)#selfship: survivors of the dark (aqua/aria)#out of the inbox#selfship asks#clara tag!#it feels like there isn't much I can say for these kinds of asks but I like answering them so that's fine right#and yes I know I still have more joyful july asks to get to#waiting in the wings

“I want to get into Kingdom Hearts, but where do I start?”
Uh oh sisters I’ve fallen into the fixation station, I wanna gush about KH so I’m gonna infodump about it! KH is confusing and there’s so much plot but it’s a really endearing series I promise
A few disclaimers if you wanna get into the series:
You can’t just play KH 1+2+3 and expect to understand everything, sadly. It’s not like Zelda where you can hop into any game at any point, you DO have to play most games if you want to understand the plot. That means that if you REALLY want to get into the KH fandom, you gotta put in a lot of hours. Of course you’re free to only play whatever you want, but if you wanna understand the plot you need to play all of them.
Even with all the games, the plot can be confusing. Nomura be like that. They ret-con a lot of plot points and give half-hearted explanations at times, you’re just gonna have to deal with that if you want to get into the series.
You WILL become emotionally attached to at least one character. Good luck making it through 358/2 Days without crying.
KH fans are usually p chill and are super eager to help make sense of the plot for you if you ask nicely. No seriously we’re THAT desperate to infodump. I once sat a friend down for 40 minutes explaining the Sora-Roxas-Xion-Namine-Kairi-Ventus-Vanitas situation. ... Also beware KH fans because of how desperate we are to infodump.
WITHOUT FURTHER ADO HERE’S A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO PLAYING THE KH SERIES UNDER THE CUT
Okay so I’m gonna lay out all of the games in 2 lists: order they were released and order they take place in the timeline. These lists will also include remakes and platforms

Melody of Memory(2020 - PS4+XBox 1+Switch) [I presume it takes place after 3, but it wasn’t released yet so I’m not 100% sure]
Note: Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days kinda take place at the same time, but 358/2 Days goes past where Chain of Memories ends to I put CoM first
*What’s going on with χ :
Kingdom Hearts χ is... complicated. Long story short, it’s χ, Unchained χ, Union χ, and Dark Road all in one? Kind of? I’ll let Wikipedia explain:
So... yeah. They’re kind of all in one. To be honest, KHUX is not necessary for understanding the KH plot, but is still fun for people who enjoy mobile games and want a bit more lore- esp for fans who like self inserts. The plot of KHUX is the player’s self-insert character dealing with everything leading up to and going through the Keyblade War, whereas Dark Road covers Xehanort’s origin story. Back Cover(a movie, not a game) is in the same bundles as 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage, and covers the plot of the Union Leaders and Master of Masters leading up to the Keyblade War.
Don’t worry about it if you just want the plot, just watch the Back Cover movie and you’ll be fine <3
Collections:
Do you want to not have to buy like 10 games and like 5 different devices just to play the KH series? Have I got you covered! The following collections were released, each one containing more games than the last. Go with All-In-One if you want everything up to and including 3
NOTE: some games are included as “Movies”. Rather than having a playable remake of the game, they play CG cutscenes of the game that explain the plot. Good if you just want the plot, but you’ll have to get the original game if you want the gameplay.

Videos:
“I can’t afford to get all of these things,” you cry in agony, “But I still want to understand the plot without just watching a summary video!” I feel you, I feel you. Well thank the youtuber gaming community, because every game has at least one compilation of every cutscene spliced together. The downside is you dont get to play the games, and you’ll miss some small things such as normal NPC dialogue that isn’t triggered by cutscenes alongside setting-centric context, but these are still your best friend if you want the full emotional weight and comprehension of the story. ... It’s also much faster to get through than watching or playing the entirety of the game. Length of each video is noted.
Kingdom Hearts (~4.5 hrs)
Chain of Memories (~3 hrs)
Kingdom Hearts 2 (~13 hrs)
Re:Coded[MOVIE] (~3 hrs)
358/2 Days[MOVIE] (~3 hrs)
Birth By Sleep (~6.5 hrs)
Dream Drop Distance (~5 hrs)
χ Back Cover[MOVIE] (~1 hr)
0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage (~1hr)
Kingdom Hearts 3 (~10 hrs) | Re:Mind DLC (~3 hrs)
(protip: when i was binging these i watched them on 1.5X speed to get through them much faster. They talk slow enough that you can usually absorb it fine. Srsly I binged everything up to KH3 and watched most of these on 1.5X speed- I did the math it took me ~29.5 hours to get through ~40.5 hours worth of content.)
In Conclusion:
pls play kingdom hearts i need more people to cry with thank u for ur time
