12th January 1777 saw the death of Brigadier-General Hugh Mercer, the Scottish-born American revolutionary general.
Hugh Mercer was born in 1726 to Ann Monro and William Mercer, a Presbyterian Minister, near Rosehearty Aberdeenshire. He earned his doctorate in medicine at the University of Aberdeen and, later, served as a surgeon in the army of Charles Edward Stuart, a during the Jacobite uprising of 1745, Mercer became a fugitive in his own country. He managed to flee Scotland for the American colonies, where he settled in Pennsylvania and established a medical practice.
In 1756, Mercer, like many Jacobites, was serving the same army that had been his enemy only a decade earlier. During the Seven Years’ War, he received a commission as captain of a Pennsylvania regiment that accompanied Lt. Col. John Armstrong’s raid on the Indian village of Kittanning. Mercer was wounded during the raid but managed to escape through the woods, wandering injured, alone, and hungry for days until he reached Fort Shirley. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of colonel and, as a result, became close friends with fellow colonel George Washington.
In the early days of the Revolution, Mercer took command of a small force of Virginia Minute Men from Spotsylvania, King George, Stafford, and Caroline Counties. Eventually, he rose to the rank of brigadier general in the Continental Army, and in the winter of 1776 accompanying his old acquaintance, George Washington, in the New York City Campaign, and subsequent retreat to New Jersey.
Following the Patriot victory at Trenton, New Jersey, Mercer led a vanguard of 350 soldiers toward Princeton, New Jersey with orders from Washington to destroy the Stony Brook Bridge. On January 3, 1777, Mercer met a larger British force at Clarke’s Orchard. The struggle between these two forces quickly turned into a race to secure the strategic position on the heights of a nearby hill. During the struggle, musket and rifle fire turned to hand-to-hand combat with bayonets. Unfortunately, an overwhelming majority of Mercer’s men had no bayonets on their muskets. As his men began to fall back, Mercer stepped forward and desperately rallied his men with the words “Forward! Forward!” His command was met by the forceful thrust of British bayonets to his chest, and he fell to the ground.
Finding Mercer still alive, Continental soldiers removed him to a nearby oak tree, which would later bear his name, and finally to the field hospital in the Thomas Clarke House, where he died of his wounds on January 12th, 1777. The Patriots ultimately succeeded in driving the British from Princeton, and the legacy of General Mercer’s courageous efforts became a rallying cry for American troops.

While Catherine Middleton has been absent from royal duties for two months due to a “planned abdominal surgery,” the British public has been full of speculation about what's going on with their future Queen Consort.
But the royal family has always held a fine line between balancing private health matters with disclosure to the public they serve.
“You could argue that details about a head of state are in the public interest,” says Richard Fitzwilliams, an expert on the royal family.
“But on the other hand, to what extent does a public figure have a right to privacy?”
Catherine's absence fits into a long and evolving history of how royals have chosen to handle health issues.
Past generations often shrouded them in secrecy. Perhaps most famously, in the 1950s, the British public was not told when King George VI had lung cancer.
In 1951, he had his left lung removed because of what was vaguely described as “structural abnormalities," and cancer was not mentioned in his death announcement.
Occasionally, past generations would be more open about less significant problems.
Once in 1982, when Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, had to visit the hospital after nearly choking to death on a fishbone, she issued a statement to the press, joking, “It was only the salmon getting its own back."
Tumblr media
“The fishbone is quite revealing because they tended to be more open about minor instances,” says Gareth Russell, a historian and author who focuses on the British royal family.
“Britain was a much more reserved society in the 20th century, and in families across the land and across the social spectrum, cancer or fatal illnesses often weren't discussed.”
Catherine and William’s approach has proved to be starkly different, as they’ve addressed private matters with far more candor.
“Catherine and William are members of a different generation, so they feel no shame in being open about challenges,” says Clare McHugh, a royal historian and author.
Neither Catherine or William have shied away in the past from speaking out about health matters.
Prince William has spoken extensively about the importance of mental health, and Catherine spoke about the difficult morning sickness she faced during her pregnancies.
She also revealed her postpartum baby bump in photos hours after giving birth to her son, Prince George.
In part, it’s a necessary tactic for the internet age in which secrets are much harder to keep.
“I think they do recognize that in order to survive and flourish in a modern era they need to be honest about what is going on with them,” says McHugh.
“It’s better for them to be candid up front rather than let internet rumors fly.”
That they have previously been somewhat transparent only makes their current silence stand out, experts say.
“That’s why William and Catherine’s reticence about what's going on with them is odd,” says McHugh.
Tumblr media
As Kathryn Lamontagne, a lecturer in Social Science at Boston University says, sometimes saying nothing causes more of a stir than addressing the problem head on, a lesson the Royal Family learned when Queen Elizabeth II missed parts of a major event in the months before her death.
“For Royal followers, her absence from the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022 was a glaring sign of how unwell she was and a clear indicator of a serious issue on the horizon,” Lamontagne said in an email.
Still, despite her candor in the past, in many ways the Duchess of Cambridge’s silence is simply following tradition.
“This dance between private and public information nudges the line of medical privacy and a public clamoring for details, but it still follows the pattern of giving very few medical details of a certain kind to the public,” says Lamontagne.
“‘Never complain, never explain, in the words of the late Queen.”

𝑨𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 Harry and Meghan were 𝑵𝑶𝑻 amongst the lineup of celebrity commencement speakers this year by u/SeptiemeSens
🎓𝑨𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, Harry and Meghan were *𝑵𝑶𝑻* amongst the lineup of celebrity commencement speakers this year 🎓 Dear Sinners,Another graduation season has come and gone 🎓 And once again, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were missing from the lineup of notable 2024 commencement speakers. If I remember correctly, the only so-called "graduation speech" Meghan has given was this bizarre unsolicited "graduation speech" she released to the media in 2020 👀Here's a list of some of H&M's "famous friends" who have given commencement speeches over the years. These are individuals who have participated in ARO, Archetypes, and/or 40x40:📌ARO:John Legend (singer, songwriter, producer, EGOT winner) - Loyola Marymount University, 2024. John has given many commencement speeches over the years and is also the recipient of three (3) honorary doctorate degrees as well. His wife and ARO jam recipient, Chrissy Teigen however, has not given any commencement speeches nor received any honorary degreesMindy Kaling (actress & comedian) - Dartmouth University, 2018Tracee Ellis Ross (actress, daughter of Diana Ross) - Spelman College, 2023source 1 // source 2📌Archetypes podcast guests:Mindy Kaling (actress & comedian) - Dartmouth University, 2018Mellody Hobson (President and co-CEO of $14.9B Ariel Investments, Chairwoman of Starbucks Corporation, wife of George Lucas) - University of Southern California, 2015Serena Williams 🏆- Graduating Class of 2020Trevor Noah (S. African comedian) - Princeton University, 2021source)📌 40x40 Participants:Deepak Chopra (author and alternative medicine advocate) - University of Southern California, 2017Hillary Clinton (politician, wife of former US President Bill Clinton) - At age 21, Hillary famous delivered her Wellesley 1969 commencement speech. She returned to her alma mater in 2017 to deliver another commencement speechKatie Couric (journalist) - UMass Medical School, 2017 most recently. Katie has given many commencement speeches over the yearsKerry Washington (actress) - George Washington University, 2013. Perhaps her most famous was at Tufts University, 1987Oprah Winfrey - Oprah has given dozens of commencement speeches and has also received numerous honorary degrees over the decades📌 Bonus:Actress Kathryn Hahn - As an interesting comparison to Meghan: Kathryn is an respected and accomplished actress, you may recognize her from Parks & Recreation, WandaVision, and Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse (IMDb). TIL that like Meghan, Kathryn is a Northwestern alumni. This year, Kathryn gave the commencement speech at Northwestern University. Northwestern also gave Kathryn, along with three other accomplished alumni [*not* named Meghan Markle], honorary Doctor of Arts degrees👉 Why hasn't Northwestern invited Meghan Markle to give a commencement speech?👉 Why hasn't Northwestern given Meghan Markle an honorary degree? 📌 Notes:In 2020, H&M signed with the esteemed NY-based Harry Walker Agency. Here is Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex's profile page. (I could not find a profile page for Harry.) This is the same high powered agency that also represents the Clintons, the Obamas, John Legend, and many others for speaking engagements. At the time, it was widely reported that H&M could charge up to $1M per speech!🤑 Where did all of H&M's dream$ of making million$ of dollar$ by giving word $alad $peeche$ go? 🤑 post link: https://ift.tt/PytGmjV author: SeptiemeSens submitted: July 03, 2024 at 02:35PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. Carthage and its Ancient Origins

By Artist, Henry William Pickersgill - Engraved by D. H. Robinson - William Jordan - Autobiography, Volume 3, CC0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=65129435
Letitia Elizabeth Landon, more commonly known as L.E.L., lived from 1802-1838, was an English poet and novelist. She learned to read early and at age 5, attended a school taught by Frances Arabella Rowden, who was a poet herself and encouraged it in her pupils. In 1809, her family moved to the countryside so her education was taken over by her older cousin Elizabeth, who found that L.E.L. was above her level. She was close to her brother, two years younger than her, and began publishing when she was 18 to help pay for his university education. He became a minister and decided to repay her by spreading lies about her. Her poetry was well received by the public, with her initials becoming 'speedily…a signature of magical interest and curiosity' as one critic wrote. She took advantage of the trend of annually produced gift books to expand her career. During her career, she also wrote prose, publishing several novels in addition to her many poems and books of poetry. In 1835, John Forester, her fiancé at the time, became aware of rumors her supposed sexual activity and demanded she refute them. She told him to refute them himself. He did and she broke off their engagement, not wanting to be married to someone who didn't trust her. In 1836, she met George Maclean at a dinner party and saw him as a way to get out of England and they married that next year. In August 1838, they arrived in Cape Coast, Africa. In October 1838, she died of what was likely Stokes-Adams Syndrome which causes fainting due to cardiac irregularities that leads to inadequate blood flow, fainting, and possibly death and is exacerbated by stress and she had the medication for it near her.

Her poem Carthage, she addresses the fallen city of the Phoenicians that was the capital of the Punic empire. The Punic empire dominated Mediterranean trade in the first millennium BCE, prior to the end of the Third Punic War in 146 BCE, leading to the fall of the Punic empire. In her poem, Landon asks '[d]ust, the wide world's king,/where are now the glorious hours/Of a nation's gathered powers?' She points out that the fall of the Punic Empire was '[l]ike the setting of a star,/In the fathomless afar;/Time's eternal wing/Hath around those ruins cast/The dark presence of the past.'

Dr. Mavis Thompson-Blaize (June 2, 1927 - August 31, 2020) who practiced medicine and provided community services for more than five decades, was born in Newark, New Jersey to parents who migrated from Jamaica. She enrolled in Hunter College and received a BA in Chemistry. She earned an MD from Howard University College of Medicine. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Kings County Hospital and practiced privately in New York City until 1995.
She married James Blaize (1954). The couple had five children and seven grandchildren.
She developed one of the first Black church-based innovative programs in the nation to assist HIV patients. She understood that the disease was a particular threat to economically less fortunate Black and brown New Yorkers.
St. George’s Episcopal Church in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn already had a foundation in HIV treatment that she continued to develop. She understood the stigma in the Black community that was attached to the disease in the 1980s and worked hard to change community attitudes toward the disease even as she provided critical care to her patients.
She worked with the Medical Division of the New York City Board of Education and a per diem physician. Inducted into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, she encouraged the sorority to support her anti-AIDS activities in Brooklyn. She worked with the Board of Directors of Episcopal Health Services, the Board of Directors of Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center, the President of the Black Caucus of Health Workers of the American Public Health Association, the National Medical Association, Manhattan Central Medical Society, and the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society. She was a member of the Advisory Board of Episcopal Charities of the Diocese of New York, and a member of St. George’s Church. She served as a Lay Reader at the Bronx’s Christ Church.
She received awards from Bishop’s Cross from the Diocese of Long Island, Outstanding Lifetime Achievement, and Trailblazing Legacy Award from the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society in 2014. She was celebrated by the Mentoring in Medicine Family. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #deltasigmtheta

November 6th 1885 saw the birth of Sir William Leishman, Scottish bacteriologist.
Leishman was born in Glasgow and followed his father into medicine, graduating from the University of Glasgow in 1886. After this he took a commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps. It was whilst serving in India that he began his lifelong research into microbiology and public health. It was while he was an assistant Professor there in 1900 that he identified the causative parasite of Dum-dum fever (now known as leishmaniasis)
Returning to England to work at the Army Medical School at Netley, he became Assistant Professor of Pathology.
He was knighted in 1909, became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1910, was President of the Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene 1911-1912, and honorary physician to King George. For over a decade, he worked to produce an effective vaccine against typhoid. When war began in August 1914, 170,000 doses were issued to the troops. It is estimated that, without it, there would have been about 551,000 cases of typhoid and over 77,000 deaths. Thanks to the vaccine, there were only 1,191 deaths from 21,139 cases.
During the war Leishman was the War Office's expert on tropical diseases. He worked on committees, and with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders. He continued to discover more and more about the conditions that affected the troops, including the new ones arising from trench warfare, like trench fever. His ability to research and apply his knowledge in practical contexts made him especially valuable.

“Queen Charlotte”: A Review
::there may be spoilers::
Tumblr media
 Description:
We are one crown. His weight is mine, and mine is his…”
In 1761, on a sunny day in September, a King and Queen met for the very first time. They were married within hours.
Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. But her fire and independence were exactly what she needed, because George had secrets… secrets with the potential to shake the very foundations of the monarchy.
Thrust into her new role as a royal, Charlotte must learn to navigate the intricate politics of the court… all the while guarding her heart, because she is falling in love with the King, even as he pushes her away. Above all she must learn to rule, and to understand that she has been given the power to remake society. She must fight—for herself, for her husband, and for all her new subjects who look to her for guidance and grace. For she will never be just Charlotte again. She must instead fulfill her destiny… as Queen.

Look for BRIDGERTON, based on her popular series of novels about the Bridgerton family, on Netflix.
 My Thoughts:
I recently won a copy of “Queen Charlotte,” from a Goodreads Giveaway, in return I’m giving an honest review. This book is a tv series tie-in; I haven’t watched the series (I haven’t watched any of the Bridgerton Series, though I have read five of the books) so I can’t comment on it. I can only offer my thoughts and feelings on the novel. Another thing I want to point out, and the author pointed this out too, this book is a work of fiction loosely inspired by a true story. Also, the whole Bridgerton Series – books and show – are a kind of fairytale au of the Regency era. The same could probably be said about “Queen Charlotte.”
Now, with all that in mind – the work of fiction inspired by a true story and the fairytale au of the era – I was able to go into it with an open mind. I only knew two things about King George III – that he was the king during the American Revolution and that during his reign, he went mad and his son ruled in place of him. I knew nothing of Queen Charlotte.
We’re introduced to both George and Charlotte on their wedding day; it’s an arranged marriage and they don’t meet until right before ceremony. They have a meet cute, sparks fly, and though there are challenges, you have a feeling of how it’s going to play out. But I was okay with that, the whole story worked for me as a romance. It’s a bodice ripper, so if you prefer clean fiction, or a faithful depiction of King George III and Queen Charlotte’s lives, this might not be for you.
I loved the king and queen’s relationship. They have chemistry, they complemented one another, and they truly lived out the vows they made. In this novel and in the Bridgerton universe, Queen Charlotte is a woman of color. It’s debated whether the historical figure was or not. From the portraits that exist of the queen, she could have been (I personally think she was). History is often whitewashed. King George III’s mental illness is depicted and it is heart wrenching to read how the mentally ill were viewed and treated. The treatments given in that era were basically torture. The novel doesn’t lie – true love doesn’t cure mental illness. The best that could be done in the 18th and 19th centuries is offer unconditional love and understanding. I think that’s what I liked best about “Queen Charlotte.” It doesn’t sugarcoat; it shows how an 18th century couple might cope with an arranged marriage, racism, and mental illness.
If you like the Bridgerton books or the tv series, you’ll probably like “Queen Charlotte.” I, for one, preferred this book to the others I read.

🎓𝑨𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, Harry and Meghan were *𝑵𝑶𝑻* amongst the lineup of celebrity commencement speakers this year 🎓
Dear Sinners,
Another graduation season has come and gone 🎓 And once again, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were missing from the lineup of notable 2024 commencement speakers. If I remember correctly, the only so-called "graduation speech" Meghan has given was this bizarre unsolicited "graduation speech" she released to the media in 2020 👀
Here's a list of some of H&M's "famous friends" who have given commencement speeches over the years. These are individuals who have participated in ARO, Archetypes, and/or 40x40:
📌ARO:
John Legend (singer, songwriter, producer, EGOT winner) - Loyola Marymount University, 2024. John has given many commencement speeches over the years and is also the recipient of three (3) honorary doctorate degrees as well. His wife and ARO jam recipient, Chrissy Teigen however, has not given any commencement speeches nor received any honorary degrees
Mindy Kaling (actress & comedian) - Dartmouth University, 2018
Tracee Ellis Ross (actress, daughter of Diana Ross) - Spelman College, 2023
source 1 // source 2
📌Archetypes podcast guests:
Mindy Kaling (actress & comedian) - Dartmouth University, 2018
Mellody Hobson (President and co-CEO of $14.9B Ariel Investments, Chairwoman of Starbucks Corporation, wife of George Lucas) - University of Southern California, 2015
Serena Williams 🏆- Graduating Class of 2020
Trevor Noah (S. African comedian) - Princeton University, 2021
source
📌 40x40 Participants:
Deepak Chopra (author and alternative medicine advocate) - University of Southern California, 2017
Hillary Clinton (politician, wife of former US President Bill Clinton) - At age 21, Hillary famous delivered her Wellesley 1969 commencement speech. She returned to her alma mater in 2017 to deliver another commencement speech
Katie Couric (journalist) - UMass Medical School, 2017 most recently. Katie has given many commencement speeches over the years
Kerry Washington (actress) - George Washington University, 2013. Kerry also received an honorary Doctorate degree
source 1 // source 2 // source 3
📌 Friends:
Ellen DeGeneres - Tulane University, 2009
Gayle King - University of Maryland, 2023
Gloria Steinem - M's bestie "Glo" has given many commencement speeches over the decades. Perhaps her most famous was at Tufts University, 1987
Oprah Winfrey - Oprah has given dozens of commencement speeches and has also received numerous honorary degrees over the decades
📌 Bonus:
Actress Kathryn Hahn - As an interesting comparison to Meghan: Kathryn is an respected and accomplished actress, you may recognize her from Parks & Recreation, WandaVision, and Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse (IMDb). TIL that like Meghan, Kathryn is a Northwestern alumni. This year, Kathryn gave the commencement speech at Northwestern University. Northwestern also gave Kathryn, along with three other accomplished alumni [*not* named Meghan Markle], honorary Doctor of Arts degrees
👉 Why hasn't Northwestern invited Meghan Markle to give a commencement speech?
👉 Why hasn't Northwestern given Meghan Markle an honorary degree?
📌 Notes:
In 2020, H&M signed with the esteemed NY-based Harry Walker Agency. Here is Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex's profile page. (I could not find a profile page for Harry.) This is the same high powered agency that also represents the Clintons, the Obamas, John Legend, and many others for speaking engagements. At the time, it was widely reported that H&M could charge up to $1M per speech!
🤑 Where did all of H&M's dream$ of making million$ of dollar$ by giving word $alad $peeche$ go? 🤑
