Some thoughts on Ivarr Ragnarsson as he apppears in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

Putting this post under a cut in case anyone is trying to avoid spoilers

Okay so I want to talk specifically about the scene where Ivarr takes Eivor to have a drink and celebrate a victory during the Sons of Ragnar questline.

Ivarr tells Eivor that he’s worried about Ubba, because Ubba is content to settle down, start a farm and family. Ivarr is worried that Ubba isn’t the warrior he used to be, and that he’s giving up Valhalla.

Now, we as the player, hear that and probably think “Damn man, your brother just wants to be HAPPY; let him be.” But hear me out,

Eivor probably has a different mindset.

When Eivor first finds their father’s axe after rescuing their crew, they say “Father...you should have held onto this to the bitter end.”

Eivor probably related Ivarr’s concerns about his brother to their own feelings about the culturally “shameful” death of their father. In this instance at least, Eivor is probably siding with Ivarr.

Sometimes I think it’s worth noting that unlike many modern RPGS(like Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout), Eivor is not a “player insert” character. We can make choices for Eivor, but ultimately they are an established character with their own motivations and characterization.
