I'm still physically wiped out and my head's too fuzzy to do 'real' writing/revisions on my story, but I'm just coherent enough that I want to chitter-chatter about my fic.

So in the course of working on Choices, one of the things I've spent an inordinate amount of time on is figuring out the 'cohorts' for the valleyfolk. What I mean by 'cohorts' are the groups of people who are in a similar age-range to one another and then further subdivided into 'natives' (aka 'people who grew up together in the valley') and 'transplants.' After all, one of the things I'm trying to accomplish is interweaving three large expansion mods with the base game and coming up with a cohesive whole, and that means knowing who from the various mods have known each other basically forever.

Under the cut, I break down who's in what cohort. I may or may not later flesh out my thinking about why I plopped certain people into certain groups, mostly because when I started to do so with this list, the post grew disgustingly (more) bloated. If I do, I'll probably do a separate post for each cohort. After all, this is the site for rambling about this sort of random stuff, right? 😅 (Edit: that's exactly how I spent my afternoon. If you squint just right, these could be considered spoilers for SVE/Ridgeside/East Scarp.

I divided the population of the valley into five different cohorts/generations. Ages are based on how old they are/would be during the course of Choices. They are also in order of eldest down to youngest. I have actual ages recorded for most of the characters, but it cluttered up this list waaay too much.

Elaborating more on this post with random thoughts on Gen 2 (ages 40-60).

Again, I’m tagging all stuff having to do with Choices with ‘stardew choices.’ Feel free to block/mute if it’s driving you nuts.

—A lot characters from the East Scarp storyline concerning the journal Rosa finds fall into this particular age bracket. It amuses me to see that I ended up with Ezekiel and Jessie in this age range as well—it provides for other venues for Rosa and/or Juliet to pursue if/when I incorporate that storyline. (I’m forever adding/cutting/moving storylines depending on what I have room for and how it intertwines with Callie’s story.)

—In the Adventurer’s Guild Expanded mod, Zinnia makes note that her uncle isn’t really that old, just prematurely has white hair. This inspired me to put Marlon and Daisy at the mid-to-upper end of this age bracket. In this setting, I also imagine him and Daisy having grown up in the valley, but he went off to Castle Village to become an adventurer. Eventually, he decided to return home and found a branch of the guild in Stardew to have more/better support in combating the monsters that plague the area.

—Mark and Jess wed and had their children young. Since they’re unnamed in Always Raining in the Valley (or, at least, I could never find a name for them), I gave them more traditional names in part because Jess named his son ‘Henry,’ and in part to make Sterling stand out a little more from the expectations/mold of his family. I see Sterling’s mother as having a traditional yet somewhat unusual name, such as Ophelia, Cordelia, or Leonora, and she named him.

—It amuses me to think that Alecto is actually native to valley, and that she met Rasmodius after he decided to move there for his research.

—Various mods hint at interrelations between Marlon/Marnie/Gunther/Rasmodius/Caroline/Alecto. If I were to write something set roughly 25 years prior to Choices, it would very much center on them.

—Gunther spent his early years in the valley. He moved away as a preteen/young teenager and came back when he heard that the curator/librarian position had opened up.

—Ridgeside establishes that Bert and Caroline are siblings. I made him a little older than her, with Olga of an age with them. Olga and Kimpoi always lived in Ridgeside, while Bert and Caroline grew up down in the valley proper.

—There aren’t as many transplants in this age bracket. Andy makes mention of all of the farms hit hard by an earlier depression, and Ezekiel served in an earlier war when Corine was still very young. These two events led to far fewer people looking to move into the valley, especially combined with how the valley’s infrastructure declined over the past twenty years.

A Good Day

I was struggling to get up one morning because it was freezing. But a warm shower was enough to wake up my entire being. I introduced Kimpoy Feliciano’s vlogs to nanay. We laughed together as I devoured my breakfast. I opened the blinds to watch the sunrise while dad teased me about my outfit of the day. He said I looked like I was going to party more than work. I just laughed. 

I was already out, waiting for my dad to drive me to work. The moon was still up, looking so beautifully from a far. Not long after, work finally started. Everything was just going right, and I was with the right people too. I couldn’t help but say: “I love my job!”

And just like that, it’s home time! My parents picked me up. Lennon’s Imagine was playing on the radio as I watched the sun slowly fade in the horizon. The news was filled good stuff: NZ’s finally Covid free and we are set to go back to our old routine. Old routine, not old habits I hope. I went home to Tortang Talong, Spinach and Bagoong. It was heaven on a plate.

It was a good day, albeit tired. I know life hasn’t been good to most of us lately. We’ve been bruised and broken, but when a good day comes, please embrace it. Allow yourself to be happy--not because you have to, but because you deserve to.
