Jordan charity gathers hotel leftovers to feed poor

AMMAN (Reuters) – At the end of a lavish Ramadan buffet in the banquet hall of one of Amman’s five-star hotels, a young Jordanian charity worker rushes to gather up left-over food that his team of volunteers will package and redistribute to needy families.

Bandar Sharif began his ‘Family Kitchen’ initiative 10 years ago, angered by the amount of food thrown away by hotels during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, traditionally a period when consumption levels double across the region.

“What we do is eliminate this waste, we salvage the food and provide it to people who are in desperate need of it,” said Sharif, a 33-year-old teacher.

His team of volunteers now works all year round to collect unwanted food from large wedding parties, bakeries and restaurants.

This year the initiative has focused on the Palestinian refugee camp of Baqaa, one of the depressed areas in a country that has seen some of the biggest protests in years this month over steep price hikes, which are backed by the International Monetary Fund.

Critics say the price hikes are to blame for rising poverty in Jordan.

Family Kitchen’s initiative this year provides ‘iftar’ meals – eaten by Muslims after sunset during the holy month of Ramadan – to 500 families in the impoverished refugee camp on the outskirts of Amman.

A third of the camp’s 120,000 residents have an income below the national poverty line and around 17 percent are unemployed, the U.N refugee body says.

“Our families are very poor, there is a lot of poverty in the community, so they need this support, they need these meals in order to ensure that they have food the next day,” said Kifah Khamis, who runs a charity in the sprawling camp. 

    One camp resident, Um Thair, a mother of four, said she could not have coped without the meals delivered to her family.

“I was able to save money. During Ramadan I didn’t have to buy a lot of food or shop a lot, we got most of our meals from the charity, we would come everyday and get our iftar meal,” she said.

tweaking kifah's backstory just a teeeny tiny barely noticeable bit because i realized i did the thing where all of their rage and feelings are because of something a man did and that is NOT the vibe it is 2024 let's move on

lots of writing under the cut , brief , non-detailed mentions of child abuse , and mentions of animal death .

basically , i removed the part where she attacks her stepfather and just made him a manipulative verbally abusive asshole .

instead decided their actual biological father would be the one to be dealing the physical harm , and they attack him , which is what causes him to leave , not the ' not wanting a mutant child ' thing .

what causes her to be sent to the orphanage however is that they had a puppy named Yvette that their family found . They loved this dog like a best friend since it was the only thing they had honestly . A group of older teens decided to gang up on them and beat the puppy badly while making Kifah watch .

When they were released , Kifah knew the puppy was beyond saving , and took things into their own hands and kill her themselves . The teens went to Kifah's mom about it and said that ' he killed the puppy , ' and Kifah's mother , fed up with their ' violence ' sent them off .

i feel like this gives kifah some more independence and separation from having harm done to them specifically by men , i felt like i could get more creative .

when i first created kifah i was afraid of their story not sounding canon so i tried to make it blend in with the writing as much as i could , but i quickly noticed that marvel writers have a bit of an issue removing women and afab characters from men and viewing them alone as people rather than their value and traumas all being tied to men .

yes !! kifah is a mutant ^_^ her mother carried the x gene and her father was just a straight up mutant as well . she came out with a physical mutation .

2- what inspired you to make an X-men OC ?

so . i grew up in a nerdy mixed family , and i made kifah when i was really young . As i grew , she grew and changed with me . I love her half to death and am very proud of her .

3- is she dating anyone ?

That depends on the universe/iteration of the story . She marries Ororo/storm in most , marries quicksilver in others , and has dated deadpool in all of them , but marries him in only one . she stays single in a few though !! she's a good character on her own or shipped with other's ocs .

i absolutely can !! Viper is their codename . Viper was born Kifah Suleiman in Al-Hasakah , Syria . They are one of my X-Men ocs , and probably my favorite as they were my first .

Kifah is 30 during X-men 97 . Their codename is viper .

Kifah’s mutant abilities include hyper-agility , improved stealth , and the psychic ability to trap another mind in a dimension of their own making if their hands make contact with the other person’s head . Both of them will go limp during this time , as they are no longer in that plane of existence . Their physical bodies remain unharmed , and Kifah can’t hold someone there for longer than 30 minutes in the real world , but considering they can do anything to shatter the minds of whoever made the unfortunate decision of being on the opposite side as them , it could feel like years . Kifah prefers close-range combat because of their hands , but does occasionally fight with a bowstaff .

They were born to a Syrian mother and an Afro-Syrian mutant father . Kifah was born looking the way they did but did not develop their psychic abilities until they were 12 .

Kifah is intersex and identifies as agender , but does refer to themselves as transfeminine or transgender at times and identifies with the label to some extent . Their pronouns are they/she .

Kifah’s mother was unaware that she carried the X-Gene , and she was also unaware that her husband was a mutant . Her husband himself was in such denial he genuinely didnt believe he was either . His mutant ability was to speed up the photosynthesis process in plants .

TW BRIEF CHILD ABUSE AND CSA MENTION UNDER THE CUT . NOT GRAPHIC .

Kifah’s father left when she was 5 due to not wanting a mutant child . Her mother turned to neglecting them , and instead pouring all her time out into their younger brother .

Kifah’s mother eventually married another man who abused Kifah in multiple ways including physically and sexually . This eventually lead to Kifah scratching their stepfather on the face , causing him to go blind in his right eye .

Kifah’s stepfather twisted the story and made Kifah out to be an uncontrollable mutant who needed to be put down . Kifah’s mother unreluctantly sent them to live in a Christian orphanage , before they were declared too much trouble and were sent to an orphanage and boarding school in the United States where they met their best friend Molimo ( my friend’s oc , unfortunately he isn’t a tumblr user but here’s doodles of them I’ve done )

Much like them , molimo couldn’t hide being a mutant , and they bonded over that . I don’t have my friends permission to talk much about their oc right now , but if I get it I’ll update . To make a long story short , the orphanage burned down due to anti-mutant rioters , and Kifah was ‘ killed ‘ in the fire . Molimo found forge , and Kifah , was found by Fabian Cortez . Fabian saw potential in Kifah’s reality-warping and time-bending powers , and so he manipulated them into feeling as though they were in a safe position .

im getting tired of writing so to make another long story short , Kifah leaves what would become the acolytes at 16 , briefly joins the brotherhood , quits and keeps a low profile for the next 4 years , before rejoining the brotherhood and losing their horn on asteroid M during the magneto protocols . She goes on a villain arc due to this as her horns are incredibly important to her , before joining briefly with the X-men and reuniting with Molimo . After this they become more of their own character and aren’t really a part of any particular organization , school , or group , and instead makes radical statements of anti-government and anti-mutant hate groups through extremist acts of art and protest , as well as some physical assaults on government officials and police .

they were originally made for the comics but after watching 97 I think I’m obligated to make them work for 97 as well . It may change a bit to accommodate for how she lost her horn since asteroid M and the magneto protocols take place when they would be 30 , so maybe they lost it somehow else .

tldr I love Kifah and they deserve the world .
