Bare with me, I've got an idea that combines TFP Shockwave's invention of the cortical psychic patch, what motivation a Shattered Glass Shockwave might have made it, plus more broad cybertronian biology headcanons and how it lead to the invention of the cortical psychic patch in the first place-

Um... let's go!

To start, let's go in reverse order by talking cybertronian biology, or more specifically the more wire based functions of a more literal less sex version of interface panels. Because cybertronians are biomechanical aliens who's only method of 'reproduction' canonically (in most series) is through being birthed by the planet itself - on hold while Primus and Cybertron are dead - when I say 'interface panels' I mean panels housing plugs and ports that are typically there for medical stuff and otherwise data transfers or for use in hardware depending on the individual. The number of panels is relatively consistent and the number of in/out connections depends on the size of the bot (more for larger frames, less for smaller) and are kinda paired to whatever systems they are nearest location wise; two on either side of the hips or one each at the top of the legs, two on either side of the chest or one each at the top of the arms.

Depending on the location you can read the diagnostics of that part of the frame in more detail than if you tried investigating the same part in an entirely different panel; you're gonna get a more accurate read on damages to the left arm in the left arm panels then you are on the right leg. And for particular frames, the interface panels are used to control objects using the relevant limb or part - like a robotic arm to lift things heavier than your frame can handle - and probably even to have your frame be used AS a limb; combiner limbs would connect to whoever's the main body and interface with the relevant limb panel.

But there are panels that are explicitly medical use only, that being internal panels adjunct to the sparkchamber as well as another for specific monitoring of a cybertronian's organs, and paneling at the back of the helm or where it meets the neck for the processor and all the delicate software it holds. Bots with medical programing like Ratchet can interface with those panels directly in the event of a lack of resources (AKA the entirety of Transformers: Prime), and in fact the panel along the sparkchamber would be the easiest way to get a general systems check on a patient. Mecha like Knock Out who may or may not have actual history with being a medical doctor probably would have a harder time directly interfacing with the more delicate sparkchamber, organ, and processor panels, but he and Ratchet (and other bots with even the vaguest sense of medical training) can set up a line running to a monitor or sparkreader or any other medical hardware to fully take in a data analysis, even if it means more resources are used or that vulnerabilities could be introduced.

To the processor panel, much like brain surgery you kinda need a signal in the first place in order to get a read on it's damages, hardware or software. A spark read can let you know if the body is alive and all the damages that IT can diagnose for a general check, but operating on an offline or barely awake processor can lead to issues that you may not even be aware of at the time of procedure. It's why a direct connection (with appropriate medical coding) is better for processor diagnosis as the hardware bypass might have a signal delay between patient and doctor.

And here's where the cortical psychic patch comes in.

When Megan was otherwise comatose, the cortical psychic patch was able to allow access into his processor that had been percolating with activity (one described by Knock Out to be like 'a dream he may never wake from'), and though far from being an actual medical use of the patch it did allow for a non-medical bot to access the processor of a very much comatose patient. It was even Ratchet himself - resident medic of the Autobots - that knew how to create the patch even if it was banned for Autobot use.

Keeping in this reverse order, perhaps a SG Shockwave had invented the cortical psychic patch for an intended medical use, a tool meant for mecha who may not have been forged nor coded to BE medics but have enough training to be such (typically self-taught in the early stages of revolution, then mentored by forged medics when the war really picked up speed) in order to allow direct access to the processor interface panel. The design of it would be - rather than a plug that just magnetically sticks on to the back of a cybertronian's head - would be a series of plugs and ports of mostly universal design, adjustable to a degree for multiple frames, allowing the medic irrespective of coding to have full access to diagnose what the fuck is up with the processor.

Unfortuneately for SG Shockers (and fully intentional by TFP Shockwave) the patch isn't quite as synonymous as the medic's coding is to processor interfacing, being rather invasive of a connection even as it is, let alone the patch being more of a hardware connection which in of itself introduces vulnerabilities. Heck, it's not even safe for the operator themselves to use the patch, seeing as how Bumblebee got a head full of Megan; I mean, Bumblebee isn't a trained medic, but the fact that it happened at all is evidence to it's flaws. And that's to a patient who isn't of mind enough to struggle, Shockwave himself says that resisting the patch may cause damage to the patient/subject, combine that with the second option of 'let it happen and let them walk unabated in your head' and you're pretty much shit out of luck.

The base Shockwave would most certainly be fully aware of the intent, a direct hardline to an individual's processor is most definitely a connection to some very vulnerable software and thus information, the cortical psychic patch probably battling a lot of firewalls off with the ease of a medical interface. And in the base TFP universe, Autobots with only recent war-based medical training as opposed to previous education probably early on DID resort to using the patch as a crutch, Ratchet after all knew how to make one. It's probably a combination of Shockwave's brutal interrogation method USING the cortical psychic patch and the relatively inexperienced Autobot medics opting to use direct processor interface rather than the comparably safer hardware bypass that lead to it's banned status in the Autobot ranks, too many 'Bots were having trauma responses at the hands of young medic's servo's who didn't know any better and actively resisting the patch, which just so happened to lead to more Autobot casualties and thus probably shellshocking the medics in training to get them to fear the daunting prospect of actually losing a patient by THEIR OWN hands.

It's one thing to be using a tool made by someone who has been known to do lots of dubious shit, it's another to see a tool that you made to help be manipulated into an interrogation technique, made all the worse now that you have significantly more emotional capacity to not only feel guilty but feel solely responsible for the patch induced trauma of your own allies; the cortical psychic patch was banned by the Shattered Glass Decepticons for about similar reasons, but it's near worse for a lot of medics (even the experienced ones) had been relying on it solely for the fact that they weren't forged with the coding. The stagnated use of the cortical psychic patch in the base verse was mostly because Shockwave himself had been the inventor of it and main user of the patch, the Autobots avoiding it's use for the ban and the Decepticons not very experienced with the tool. In Shattered Glass however, the only real limit to it's perpetuity would be if the Autobots managed to learn how to create the patch at all, which if even in the base verse Ratchet knew how to make one, probably means that there's more than enough patch use in SG even if Shockwave gets caught in a spacebridge explosion or not.

And that's that I think- funny to talk about interface panels in a transformers post without doing it in a sex way haha- I just want these guys to be alien 😫

Warlord!Sanji: Zeff knows he should ban them all but he made Mihawk take the kid so this is penance, and Sanji is smiling so brightly and calling them all his parents as Boa sticks a party hat on him and the family photo is a photo no one is ever going to believe a poor waiter took as they insisted "Uncle Zeff should be in it"

Golden!Sanji: It's a quiet affair, there's not even cake, it's just a normal day. Sanji finds a present on his bed and it's a book of tales specifically about the All Blue. He hugs Mihawk and thanks him.

Golden!ASL(Sanji's the s, RIP Sabo): It is very much a big thing. All their birthdays are. Luffy and Ace help Mihawk make and decorate the cake(Ace helps make it and Luffy does most of the decorating), put up decorations("Luffy please don't snap your limbs like rubber bands, Ace these are flammable-quit flying around!"), and a present they all picked out. It's a knife set in a chef roll. Sanji hugs them all and thanks them.

Shirohige!Sanji: Gets to make the menu and not the food. He is banned from the kitchen for the day. When Ace joins it's much easier because they're in so much fucking love you don't understand, Sanji is willing to take a day off for this boy, even if it his birthday(when it's Ace's he makes sure Ace only eats the food he makes)

Trafalgar!Sanji: They don't celebrate anything, he only celebrates it because Luffy found out and made him. Law thinks it's ridiculous they now have to celebrate living thanks to Sanji's boyfriend/captain making them. Ridiculous.

NBL!Sanji: it's a medium affair, there's cake and a present but no decorations and it's far more mellow than Golden!ASL but just a bit bigger than Golden!Sanji.

Hancock!Sanji: It's a royal affair of course they go all out, who do you take them for? Marines?

ASL+S: They bring home Sanji's preferred animal somehow, someway. In all of the ASL+S AUs.

Blue!Sanji: The quads always loved spicy seafood pasta. Sanji eats it every birthday. Judge always made something sweet for it, usually a pudding.

Clown!Sanji: Buggy's crew loves throwing parties, Sanji's first birthday with the crew is the biggest party they've ever thrown. Sanji's not sure how they could ever top it. And every year they do.

Redhair!Sanji: Shanks puts his coat on Sanji and lets him be captain for the day. It's the only day of the year that mutiny is not threatened.

Croc!Sanji: Oh he's blowing money. And everyone is swooning for the little prince of Baroque Works. Even Daz is smiling.

White heart!Sanji(Trafalgar+Shirohige): The crews all get together to celebrate Ace's and Sanji's birthdays and their wedding. Law lets Bepo be protective as hell. But the feast is grand and they party like there's no tomorrow.

Fishman!Sanji: Cookbooks and maps from almost the whole island. He spends the whole day reading(and the next several months)

Revolutionary!Sanji: they don't celebrate, Sabo and Sanji do not know each other's or Koala's birthdays. They do celebrate Sabo and Sanji's anniversary and Dragon tries to make sure they can be together for that(the Okama start giving them lube soon as the know, Sanji has the biggest stockpile in the blues)

Donquixote!Sanji: The four Cs: Cocaine. Cake. Cigarettes. Chaos.

Loved!Sanji: He used to spend it with his family. He still does. A royal party and a birthday shared with his brothers. But at night it's just him and Luffy and a spare cupcake Sanji snagged just for them.

Nico!Sanji: The celebration is an exchange of stories about their moms every year, private and calm.

Charlotte!Sanji: Katakuri visits him and they catch up. Katakuri loves his little brother and how free he is. He doesn't give Sanji a present, never will. Just wishes him happy birthday and receives a letter for his.

Friend!Sanji: Spends a birthday in a town with one of his friends every year. Gets woken up with breakfast and sent out to play and be a kid. He brings whoever it is back to the Baratie for dinner and cake.

Putting Mihawk into divorce au is hysterical and opens even more doors for possible bullshit to happen on god? Luffy gets sick of his guardians fighting all the time and runs away. Cue both sides being extremely distraught, until Buggy gets a call from Mihawk asking if he’s missing any dark haired brats. Turns out Luffy didn’t quite know WHERE to run away to so he just went over to Zoros place. Cue extremely awkward moment of going to your boyfriends place to pick up your kid with your ex. (They do agree to schedule playdates for Perona and Uta tough)

Thank you, I am a genius and I am obsessed with all the ships that include these middle aged men.

And this is,,, This is just hilarious. Luffy would ALWAYS go to Zoro's place, of course. And also he likes Mihawk because he's cool and edgy and doesn't bother them the same way his dads do. And Mihawk is just- So fucking exhausted. So tired. Please, he didn't start dating Shanks for shit like this and tbh it isn't even because of that!!!!!! Luffy didn't even remember he was dating Shanks, lmfao, he just wanted to go see Zoro and suddenly went "Oh, you're the one banging my dad. Where's Zoro?" and Mihawk would just sigh and start typing the number so he can call those irresponsible idiots. Uta does this too, always wanting to go see Perona. Mihawk is highly starting to consider breaking up with Shanks but it wouldn't help anyway, so at least he gets sex from this suffering.

If they end up being a quad poly relationship (Mihawk/Shanks/Buggy/Crocodile) and raising these kids, you can imagine the chaos.

18.12.2023 Wir haben gut geschlafen, wurden aber ziemlich früh von der Sonne geweckt, da in den „cabins“ weder Rollos noch Vorhänge waren. Ich hab das erste mal um 04:50 auf die Uhr geschaut - viel zu früh zum aufstehen… also nochmal umgedreht, aber richtig schlafen konnte ich nicht mehr. Zum Frühstück sind wir dann alle rüber ins Haupthaus gegangen. Auf dem Weg nach drüben wurden wir direkt von den Kids und von den beiden Hunden Noah und Hank begrüßt. Wir haben uns erst mal ein bisschen umgeschaut. Es ist so unglaublich schön hier! Die Farm hat 700 Hektar! Hier leben zwei Hunde, 150 Kühe, 3 Pferde und 6 Katzen (davon 3 Kitten 😍). Rings um die Farm sind Hügel und Berge. Wir sind so dankbar, dass wir hier sein dürfen! 🥰 Nachdem wir ausgiebig die Kitten (Misty, Freya und Peanut) geknuddelt hatten ging es kurz nach 9 Uhr mit dem Baggy und dem Quad zum Kühe füttern. So richtiges füttern ist das nicht. Die Tiere bekommen Heu und irgendein Liquid, um etwas an den Menschen gewöhnt zu werden. Dass sie im Notfall, wenn sie mal ausbüchsen, zutraulicher sind und leichter wieder eingefangen werden können. Raphi und Jérémie haben uns noch einen Teil der Farm gezeigt. Das Gelände ist so riesig! 😧 Zum Mittagessen gab es Reis mit Gemüsesoße. Hier schmeckt einfach alles viel besser, frischer, intensiver. 😍 Am Nachmittag ging es auf eine zweite Erkundungstour mit dem Jeep, wir mussten ihn erst mal anschieben, da die Batterie leer war. 🤪 Steffen ist gefahren - das erste mal mit dem Lenkrad auf der rechten Seite. Es hat so viel Spaß gemacht und wir haben super viel gesehen. Als Steffen auf dem Weg umdrehen musste ging die Karre leider aus und wir mussten nochmal anschieben - in der größten Mittagshitze - was für ein Spaß! 🤪😂 Danach haben wir erst mal das Planschbecken der Kids mit Wasser und Eiswürfeln gefüllt und uns abgekühlt. Es war ganz schön frisch, aber bei den Temperaturen echt herrlich! Da wir eh schon nass waren sind wir mit Raphi und den Kids noch zu ein kleinen „See“ auf dem Gelände gefahren. Sie nennen es hier „damm“, da das Wasser aufgestaut wird. Ich hab mir das Kanu geschnappt, Andi ein kleines Surfboard und Nicki, Steffen, Ilja, Younes und Ian das SUP. Am Ende lagen alle im Wasser. 😄 Ganz oben war es super warm und weiter unten super kalt. Aber es hat so viel Spaß gemacht. 😍 Am späten Nachmittag sind wir nochmal mit dem Buggy und dem Quad auf einen Hügel gefahren. Die Drohne (die kleinen Jungs sind total gegeisterte davon!) im Schlepptau um die Aussicht zu genießen. Unterhalb konnten wir die Farm sehen und in der Ferne die Berge. What a view! 😍 Auf der Rückfahrt haben wir noch ein paar Kängurus 🦘 gesehen. Es gab noch Abendessen und eine Dusche für uns alle. Es ist so schön zu sehen, wie auch Andi und Steffen sich hier wohlfühlen und die Zeit genießen. Just another day in paradise!

Nach dem Frühstück haben wir wieder die Kühe zusammen gefüttert.

Danach sind wir zu den Pferden gefahren. Sie werden hier recht wild gehalten und haben keinen Stall, sondern sind komplett auf der Koppel. Es sind drei Stück, Ace, Bella und Ramsey. Sie haben hier soooo viel Platz, das ist echt richtig toll!

Wir haben Ace „eingefangen“ und mit hoch zum Haus genommen, da nur er geritten werden kann.

Jeder durfte sich mal in den Sattel setzen und ein bisschen „reiten“ 🏇🐴

Zu Mittag haben wir heute selbst gemachte Pizza gebacken #soyummi

Danach haben wir mit den Kids gespielt und Tshirts gefärbt.

Aufeinmal sahen wir, dass es sehr nah beim Haus brennen muss, da überall Rauch aufstieg. Wir haben das sofort mit dem Nachbarn abgeklärt und es war alles okay.

Hier werden teilweise die Felder und Wälder geplant verbrannt, damit die Gräser nicht zu hoch werden und so ein Buschfeuer nur halb so schlimm werden würde. So crazy.

Um nochmal ein paar Kängurus zu sehen, sind wir erneut mit dem buggy und dem quad los. Diesmal ist Andi mit dem Quad gefahren. 🛺

Wir haben einige Kämgurus gesehen und sogar einen riesigen Gekko. 🦘🦎

Die kleinen Katzen im Haus haben unser Herz im Sturm erobert. ❤️ Endlich wieder Katzen schmusen und kuscheln. Aber nicht nur sie sind liebesbedürftig, sondern auch die beiden Hunde, Noah und Hank 🐶🐕 Die beiden haben uns meist auch begleitet, wenn wir Touren mit dem buggy und dem Quad gemacht haben. Wir sind soooo begeistert. Morgen müssen wir leider schon wieder weiter… aber all das hier, werden wir irgendwann noch unseren Enkeln erzählen können 🤩

We went through a lot of stuff like he did the Volkswagen golf a trike a REV trike a quad trike a car that's turned into a quad turned into a car a quad all sorts of things and different brands and things of people have trucks small trucks trailer I mean it just went on and on and his evike with a trailer was like number one any considered it but doesn't want to do it and other people during the war were not doing it and they saw him do it and didn't like it and said you can't carry enough and he's using it for uranium and had us move the big stuff and it was a secret so I have to tell you it made sense later and it makes sense now but it's a little late but we do think it's this particular vehicle and we don't necessarily think it's a great idea it's going to point us out

But you can't get a car without money and Gastly cost tons of money gasoline is expensive. So we're going to wait it out. This Chariot as they call it ended up putting like a buckboard on it and that's what I pickup truck is it's just like the Volkswagen and the horse and buggy race version is like a Volkswagen it's kind of analogous and it's been like that for a while it's a single horse carriage that's two wheeled and that could be a motorcycle carrying a trailer on the e-bike with a trailer or trike or it could be a Volkswagen golf. And there's a buckboard on it and a question whether it's still in August because it's bigger than the VW bug or beetle especially inside and it's not really so we start to look around and say what the hell could this thing be for real but we know what it is and we did plan it out and our friend here came up with the concept or design and simple and it works and it's fast it looks good and you can buy one already done and they cost about the same as the Volkswagen of the same year increase it a bit but a lot of times they have a hard time selling it cuz they do the work themselves and it doesn't really look massively finished so we are good to look for those apparently it says I can't find that many of those not that many and we do get that and he says he might convert it into a pickup truck and later like I probably GT or something a new one not the old kit we agree that that's actually probably his style. But the kid is expensive that's 4,000 well you might be able to find it on eBay and that's true

Dar'Aliit: Chapter Twelve - The Hand Fate Deals You (Part 2)

"Our objective is Roche." General Nidor stalks between the squads of us that have lined up in the hangar of the Venator II class ship the Krayt. Two companies of men stand around me. Bad Company and Fang Company. Oddly enough, the other three Dar'Aliit are nowhere to be seen. General Nidor stands stiff before us.

"Our sources indicate the Separatists fled to Rocheni space and will be waiting there for us. If we can break their defenses we can deploy our teams to the capitol to take out their blockade with the surface to orbit canons there."

"Sir, why haven't the locals done it?" Someone pipes up from the back.

"Because the locals are under Separatist occupation, and they are civilians. We cannot ask them to risk their lives," General Nidor snaps back. "We will be in charge of breaking the blockage and freeing them." He turns to me. "And I want you and Fang Company to retrieve any flight data you can while you're on the ground. We know they've stationed a tactical droid there. Scan it for every ounce of information."

I stare back. "Yessir."

I want to ask the General where the rest of my so-called aid is, but I won't start an argument here for these men's sake.

"Bad Company, I want the bomber squad ready when we drop out! Ground troops prepare for blockade breach. Everyone else, to battle stations!"

"Sir, yes sir!"

I remain quiet among the shouting. The Dar'Aliit might not be here, but again the General sends me with a meat shield. Fang Company can handle the ground assault, and I can handle the droid. It's one tactical droid. One.

Addie steps up as the troopers are breaking off. At his side is the R3 unit from months ago. He pats its head. "Kian, I was told you should take him with. He's been cleared, nothing buggy going on."

"The hell do I need a droid for?" I glance at the domed head watching me.

"The General thinks he'd be an asset to you on your mission."

"Asset my shebs." I can't be mad at the droid, but I don't need it. I'm no kid, and I certainly don't need some nanny.

"Just take the droid," Addie sighs. "You know he can plug into the computers." He leans over. "Great way to tick off a Jedi is to mess with the comms system in downtime."

At that, I snicker. "Thank you, sir." I lower my voice a tone, though. "Where are the Dar'Aliit?"

Addie cocks an eyebrow in surprise. "General had a separate mission for them. He said you requested to work alone."

"Made that request months ago."

Addie looks back. "Going in alone gets people killed, Kian." He nudges R3 forward. "Take the droid."

The Astromech beeps crassly and rolls toward me. I give it a once over and a nod. Addie's not wrong about a lot. I imagine he understands the losses too, but I don't need his insistence either. I know how this works. I am better off alone.

R3 follows as I get suited up. I can't say I've been deployed fully in months. As the Dar'Aliit we run the occasional recon, and a lot of bounty hunter meets. But my bones are itching for a fight. A real fight, not a shouting match with my Commanding Officer.

I just wish I didn't have to keep lugging around others with me. Addie says this is the General granting my request, but he must've forgotten the General mentioned Fang Company in the same breath as my name. They're good men, they know their job. Half of them will probably die. I'm growing number to that fact every day.

"Hey Kian!" Headshot rounds the corner. "Check this bad boy out." He hefts a fresh off the line quad canon. I stare at it.

"I thought you were going somewhere else," I say, deadpan.

"We are. Other side of the planet," Headshot says. He tinkers with the quad canon.

"They're gonna see you coming from a mile away," I tell him.

He laughs, unbothered by my cynicism. "And they won't make it a step closer!"

I don't see Booker or Raf, but I do see Fang Company filtering in to kit up and find their weapons.

There's rookies in the mix. Weird to think I'm not hardly older than them but I feel like years have passed in the span of weeks and months. I sometimes wonder if the troopers who look blonde are really just going grey.

I tie back my hair and pull on my helmet. Now isn't the time for wandering thoughts. R3 tags along. He's been scrubbed of paint, and he looks kind of naked. I suppose if he's going to babysit me for more than today, I can at least rectify the lacking paint job.

A sergeant waves from the LAAT/i prepping to deploy. There's a shudder and I know the cruiser has dropped out of hyperspace. All alarms blare.

"Battle stations!"

"Get onboard!"

I scramble to the ship. Everything shudders and I grab the sergeant's hand, stumbling inside.

"Hold onto your buckets, boys!" The pilot shouts over the intercom and the doors slide shut.

We're airborne. I can hear the sounds of a dogfight outside as the LAAT/i hurtles through the blockade battle. Everything shudders and roars beneath my feet. I hold my breath. I'm thankful now for the tracks I managed to load up from the radio, and as soon as it's safe, I flick one on and let my head fill with the noise of whatever last week's top hit was. The music drowns out the battle, but not the sergeant.

"Prepare for descent!"

The world shakes. I cling to the webbing and try not to remember the last time I was hurtling down toward the surface of a planet in a tin death box.

We break the atmosphere and laser fire follows us down. Then the doors slide open and sunlight pours in revealing a dusty multi-tiered city before us. Dormant Surface to Orbit canons wait on the second tier.

"Go, go, go!"

My boots hit the ground.

"Head for the upper East! The west bridge is blown out!" Captain Addie's voice comes across my comms loud and clear. I slow, though, and let the others run past me. R3 catches up at my side and I glance at him.

"C'mon," I order the astromech. "Just follow me, got it?"

Splitting off from Fang Company, I head for the towers. There's a gap between where we landed and the city, and I can see now that it's some sort of natural feature that the locals used to protect the city. The towers over it rise high overhead and there's droids moving in them. They're distracted by the Company moving on the bridge, though.

Red laser fire hails down as I run to the edge of the canyon cliff and aim at the tower. I pinpoint each droid and pick them off, one by one. Then I load in a grappling hook and shoot it across the gap. It sticks.

R3 gives off a whine.

"Get your own," I snap. "Or find another way in." I secure the line on my end and start climbing across. There's a bit of a hiss, and the sound of jets.

Overhead, R3 jets across the gap. I scowl at him.

"Okay, now, I hate you."

He beeps triumphant as I clamber up into the tower. I kick aside a B1's tinny head and look down into the city.

Every road leads around and up to the point of the city, sort of like a stairs. It looks like there's plenty of vantage points for the droids too. I can see at least two more towers in the distance. The state building is at the top. R3 rolls over to one of the droids as I kneel with a pair of macrobinoculars and try to make out the next best approach.

A beep interrupts my thoughts.

"What?" I snap.

R3's dome rolls around. He gestures to the droids.

"Scrap metal, leave it alone." I sigh. "We need to get up to the top of the city, got it?" I can hear blaster fire elsewhere. I put the flashes of faces out of my head and swallow hard.

"C'mon," I straighten up. R3 rolls to my side. I look across at the next tower and chart the quickest path to it. I can hear Fang Company coming through the streets, clearing a path for us. Heading for the stairs, we head for the streets. My HUD blinks full of enemy blips. I pull up my blaster as sunlight hits my visor.

Singed skin, singed metal, and the sounds of war are everywhere. It's chaos and I charge right into it. It's the first time in months I finally feel at home.

Hauling myself over a window ledge I collapse inside of a house and roll. I lift my head and fearful stares greet me. Two older children clinging to their mother. Their dark faces with white stripes running down the cheeks tighten at the sight of me.

I lift a finger to my face. "We're going to free you," I whisper. "Stay hidden."

The woman nods and clings to her children tighter.

I move to her door and poke my head around a blaster through the window. Droids march down the street and I slip into the shadows again. R3 rolls absently around the house. Kriffing machine.

"Ma'am," I keep my voice as quiet as I can. She looks up, startled.

I point left and right and raise my palms in question. I need to know where all of these droids are coming from.

She just shakes her head and ducks it close to her kids. So much for help. I exhale a little. These people are terrified. It isn't their fault they're caught in the middle of this.

The droids march past and I slip out the door. I can hear the metallic chunk-chunk-chunk vanishing around the corner. Running up the street, I can see it, the state building. Whatever droid is orchestrating this has to be up there. Tactical droids like to keep their distance.

R3 whistles as he follows me.

"Shut up!" I hiss at him. I pull into a small alleyway as I hear tinny voices up ahead.

"Did you hear that?"

"I heard it!"

R3 turns the corner beside me. I scowl at him briefly.

The droids come poking around, but they give up quickly as another order calls them away. I have to assume it's Fang Company making their move and I slip out back toward the state building. This is the real issue. Patrols move around the base, and there's only one entrance. Meaning it's the only exit too.

I hate buildings like this. Secure, yes, until you're the one needing to get inside.

"Stay here," I tell R3. The patrol droids are moving back our way so I crouch in the nearest alleyway and wait until the grind of their steps has moved off. I pull a grenade off my pack and, priming it, peek out. I wait for them to about face, then I roll it toward the door.

"Hey, what's this?" A droid stops and picks it up. I try not to chuckle and duck my head back behind the wall.

Boom. Metal shrapnel everywhere. It's a beautiful sight to behold. R3 begrudgingly stays behind as I run up to inspect my work. The door is damaged, but not beyond repair.

I will need to breach it.

"R3," I call out, sighing. He whistles and rolls up beside me.

"Door."

The droid plugs in dutifully and in a few moments the door is open. It looks like one long ride to the top. Just me, and whatever's waiting up there.

At least if I die, I won't get yelled at.

I load in. R3 follows. This being part of the Eastern front means whatever this droid knows might well turn the tide of the war. I know the General thought of it. We've been getting pummeled out here for months, losing men, ships, and assets, and these people are losing their homes. Angry as I may be, I can't afford to screw this up.

The lift rises slowly. I reload and pull out an EMP. Red blips start showing up as soon as the lift doors open.

One tinny catches on quick. "Hey, someone's–"

I toss the EMP and it clunks across the floor. There's a metallic scream. I rush out into the room. Droids have fallen over, sparking on the floor. There's only a few B1's and–kriff. I knew this was too easy.

No tactical droid in sight. It's an empty room filled with decoys. I rush to the outlook and glance down. I tune into the captain's channel.

"Sir, there's nothing up here."

"What was that Kian?" blasterfire all around.

"I said there's nothing here! The tactical droid's not in the tower! Our intel was bad, sir."

"Then get down here and find it!"

"Yessir." I whirl around. R3 is plugging into the tower controls. I run over to him. "What did you find?"

The security feed appears timestamped two hours before we got word. The tactical droid stalks around the room yammering its head off.

"The Republic forces will assume we have held position here. We will lead them to believe this is where we remain. Then we will lure the Republic into the city where they will be forced to surrender, or else we shall destroy the civilians in their homes. Ha. Ha. Ha."

The droids tinny laugh trails off. I look up and out the window immediately. "Kriffing monsters. Sir!"

"What is it, Kian?"

"Seps already pulled the tactical droid out of the tower. It's likely not in the city. The droids are going to turn on the civilians. It's all a set up."

"Understood!"

I pat R3 on the head. "Keep an eye up here, ping me if you see anything." I race for the lift. It takes its sweet time, grinding down as my heart thuds in my chest. These people are about to become casualties in our war. They aren't even soldiers.

The lift doors open and I hit the ground running. My blaster is in my hands. There's sand colored droids in the streets poking their blasters into houses. I hear a scream.

"Hey, tinny!" I blast the first clanker I see and shrapnel dings off my helmet. I grab a grenade and lob it. The explosion knocks down several more. I can hear whimpering and crying.

These people have done nothing but exist.

I shred another droid with laser bolts. One tries to fire back point blank and I slam my blaster across its face. The street goes silent.

Faces peek cautiously out of windows and doors. I spot the dark skinned woman from before, clinging to one child. I run over to her.

"Are you okay?"

She stares at me and clutches the girl beside her. "My son," she gasps. "Please, he was hit."

I'm not a medic but I know triage. She doesn't need to know that, though. Her son might be dying. Why does everyone die? I wish I could slam my fist into another droid's face, but instead I shove in the door and brush past her. The boy took a shot to the leg. He's bleeding everywhere.

I can handle this. "Blankets, or sheets?" I yell at the woman.

Her daughter scrambles off and comes back with a towel.

He's been shot in the thigh. I drop down and twist the towel tight between my hands. Tourniquet is the only thing that'll keep him alive.

His mother clutches his hands. His face, though nothing like mine, carries an all too familiar pained expression. I think of Mer'en, dying peacefully. I don't have time to be haunted, though. This boy is bleeding out right here, right now. He's alive and if I do nothing, he will die.

He will not die.

I wrap the towel tight and cinch down until the blood cuts off. The boy squirms, he cries in pain. I knot it and grab out my medical pack. I hand it to the woman. "Painkillers and bacta. Leave his leg wrapped until help comes, got it? Do not move him."

She nods. "Thank you."

I stand and rush to the door. There's bound to be more injuries, but I can't handle them all. I have to get back to Fang Company. I ping R3.

"Any luck finding our tactical droid? We're about to have casualties down there."

A map is pinged to my HUD. I pull it up and look at the red dot advancing. "He's down with the main forces." I grit my teeth and look around one last time. I couldn't stop my brother's from dying, I can't stop this war.

But these people aren't soldiers, or droids, they're just people. And my job is keeping them alive.

I have always been a big fan of off-roading, the smell of petrol, and the rush of adrenaline. This love started in kindergarten when I became obsessed with cars, motorcycles, tanks, and planes. I remember staying up late, so I could watch my favorite car show even after I was supposed to be asleep in bed. Naturally, as I grew older my dreams started to reach further, and further, and one day I managed to convince my dad to buy me a buggy. It was small and weak, but it made so many great memories. After years of usage, it finally gave up and shut down for the last time. The next on my list was a quad. This one was decently strong for a little kid like me, so it took some time for me to tame it, but once I did I was unstoppable. For years I took that quad to the woods pretty much daily. I had a few friends who were a bit older than me, and already had motorcycles, so we became this group of off-road-loving youngsters. We had a few run-ins with the local police, but they were understanding with us. We also ran into tons of mechanical issues. I frequently walked quite a few kilometers from the surrounding hills to my grandfather’s house, so I could ask my dad to tow the quad back home with his own one. After a while, my dad taught me how to do basic repairs on the parts that always gave me trouble, so I and my friends started to venture further, and further. Also, we had to buy new boots rather frequently, because I had a habit of getting stuck in the mud, and going home in socks. I relish those days, and I'm forever grateful for the experiences I got to make at such a young age.
