For someone like me, who isn't living a very active lifestyle for last few years and almost spend all her time reading in bed, the thought of climbing is very off-putting.
But I always wanted to see Khandadhar Waterfalls. So, I pushed myself to climb these steps (more than 500) to reach the base of the waterfall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The view when you reached the base is enchanting. I am glad I didn't skip it, fearing the exertion, otherwise I would have regretted it later.
Khandadhar Waterfalls is located at Nandapani, distance of few kilometres from Bonaigarh, a subdivision of Sundargarh District of Odisha. It is said to be highest waterfall in Odisha and 12th highest in India.

Khandadhar Waterfalls is located at Nandapani, distance of few kilometres from Bonaigarh, a subdivision of Sundargarh District of Odisha. 'Khanda' means sword and 'Dhara' means waterfall in Odia. The single drop waterfall is named thus as it looks like a sword.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Created by a perennial rivulet, named Korapani Nala, the horsetail type of waterfall plunges from a height of 244 metres/800 ft. It is said to be the highest waterfall in Odisha and 12th highest in India.
The waterfall can be reached by road from Bonaigarh. Rourkela is the railway station nearest to it. The last stretch of waterfall can be approached by foot. A climb of about 700 steps leads to its base, where one will be greeted with a majestic view of the plunging waterfall. And if one is adventurous enough, they can trek or hike their way to top of the hill to enjoy the view of the waterfall and the landscape from there.

Sword Falls
Sword Falls--
Khandadhar Falls is the largest waterfall in Odisha in Sundergarh district.
Height and position-- It has an average height of 800 feet (244 meters) and is located 90 km from Rourkela. It is also said to be the fourth tallest waterfall in India.
Legend-- According to folklore, the Thakurani "Kankal Devi" lived in the hilly area of Sundargarh. He ate what the big trees, rocks, and soil could get. As a result, the people of the "Pahadi Bhuiyan" tribe, who live in the area, were outraged. They took Thakurani and placed her on a large rock. As Thakurani ate the stone from the middle, a hole was created and water began to flow down the hill. The water, which is about 800 feet below the surface, looks like the edge of a sword. Therefore, the name of this waterfall is "sword". The name of this ever-flowing water source at the top of the hill is "Korapani Nal". The sun's rays fall on the water's edge, making it look like a floating rainbow.
Transportation system-- To reach the sword, one must first go to Rourkela and from there to Lahnipada on National Highway 23. From there, go to the right and cross the street to the left. The road from Lahunipada is only a summer road. This is not a concrete road

Tropical, but cool weather for an outing Situated in the coastal plains of Odisha, Bhubaneswar experiences typical tropical weather conditions and is greatly influenced by the heat and cold waves that sweep in from the plains of Northern India. The city temperature is hot and humid throughout the year shooting past 40 degrees during peak summer. The winters and monsoons too are often marked by occasional hot sunshine and persistent humidity. While the winter stretches for a short three month period from December to February, the summer continues from March to May. The city experiences rain from June to September followed by a brief post-monsoon period of October to November. The best time to visit most of the city, therefore, is during the cool, dry season with clear skies between November and March. The Temple City, as Bhubaneswar is known in the tourism circle, has plenty of greenery, so the evening breeze is soothing and every visitor to the city experiences the lovely evening outing across the city. Summer (March to May) The average minimum temperature remains around 25 degree Celsius during Summer in Bhubaneswar that starts from March and continues till June. At the end of February, the temperature starts to turn relatively high and humid. The average maximum temperature is 38 degrees Celsius.  What is the best time to visit Odisha? October to March (Winter) is the best time to visit Odisha. During these months the sky remains clear, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. The famous Konark Dance festival takes place in February, making it all the more exciting to visit the state.  The state enjoys a tropical monsoon climate throughout the year because of its proximity to the sea; hence, there are incessant rains during the Monsoon season from July to September. Summers from April to June are quite hot with occasional rainfalls making it quite uncomfortable for sightseeing. Hence it's advised to plan your trip accordingly.  Odisha knows how to uplift the spirit of  travelers with its natural bliss in the rainy season.   With the end of June, July comes in with much more relaxed weather and rain showers brightening up the whole state.  Best time to visit Odisha The southwest monsoon doesn’t seem to leave the Goa of East till late September and keeps on bringing more freshness to the land with an average rainfall of 150 cm.  The climate of this tourist destination stays quite rejuvenating as the temperature ranges between 32° C and 25° C and is a good time to come for a vacation if you are a monsoon lover. Moreover, for devotees of Lord Jagannath, this is the best time to visit Odisha as the famous Rath Yatra or Chariot Festival is celebrated during this time. The chariot which has idols of Lord Jagannath, Subhadra, Balabhadra, Sudarshan Chakra is taken for a public procession.  Devotees who get a touch of the chariot feel that their journey is then complete. And one wishes to stay in Puri for a while longer, then they can pay a visit to Pipli which is a village that has acquired the art of French handicraft technique, called Appliqué.  Along with that, one of the tourism places that one can go for a honeymoon tour during this time is Bhubaneswar which has a slightly revivifying atmosphere during this season and offers tourist attractions like Lingaraja Temple, Dhauli Giri Hills, Udayagiri Caves, Brahmeshvara Temple nestled in its realms.  The Cuttack city also has some good places to visit for Family like Cuttack Chandi Temple, Mahanadi Barrage, Dhabaleswar Barrage. Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur, Sanaghagara Waterfall in Kendujhar District and khandadhar Waterfall in Sundargarh District is some other place      one can choose for a tour.     However, it is advised to check the weather            forecast before planning a holiday in Odisha.
