The Chase Files Daily Newscap 3/30/2019
Good MORNING  #realdreamchasers! Here is The Chase Files Daily News Cap for Saturday 30Th March 2019. Remember you can read full articles for FREE via Barbados Today (BT) or Barbados Government Information Services (BGIS) OR by purchasing by purchasing a Saturday Sun Nation Newspaper (SS).
MURDER RECORD COULD MORE THAN DOUBLE – If killings continue at the current alarming clip Barbados could more than double its previous murder record. That estimation has come from retired deputy commissioner of police Bertie Hinds, who said based on statistics for the first three months of the year the island was on course to record between 80 to 90 murders by the end of 2019. In the first quarter of the year Barbados has already recorded 20 murders. The 35 murders which occurred in 2006 are the most ever in Barbados in a calendar year. Speaking at a panel discussion on Youth, Crime and Violence in Barbados – Solutions and Strategies, at the 3W’s Oval last night, Hinds said the unprecedented number of murders so far for the year was reason for concern. He revealed that over the past 35 years, Barbados averaged 22 murders annually, which worked out to roughly two murders per month. Referring to the first three months of this year, Hinds said “Never in the history of Barbados has this happened, so something has gone amiss . . . . If we continue on this trajectory we are on course for something like 80 to 90 murders in Barbados. God forbid that these things happen because already there is fear and panic among the population in Barbados,” he added. “Entire lifestyles have been changing. You have to change your lifestyle now because chances are, places that you used to frequent may be subjected to violence. The famous shopping mall up there in Christ Church, who would have thought about that?”Hinds suggested that there was a well-established link between drugs and the rise in violence. He said what was now happening in Barbados was a carbon copy of what took place in the US in the 70s and 80s. “This is a clear manifestation of what was happening in the US in the 70s and 80s, so we are mimicking behaviours of continental US and Central America to some extent and Europe also,” Hinds reported. Director of the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit Cheryl Willoughby also revealed that coming out of several studies which examined data captured between 2012 and 2016, the 16 to 25 age group was proving to be the most worrisome. Willoughby said they had seen an increased number of 16 and 17-year-old males being charged with murder and gun-related offences. “That is the gender in Barbados right now that is creating most of the problems as it relates to crime, especially serious, violent crimes and the 16-25 age group is posing the most problems and are occupying the resources within the criminal justice, as well as the penal system,” she said. Furthermore, she said there had also been an increase in the number of violent acts being committed by teenagers. “We examined the extent of violence among the 11 to 15 age cohort and we found that over a four-year period Barbados had a 35 per cent increase in offences committed by persons in that age group. “Assaults and woundings represented the most popular category of offences committed by these persons and they accounted for 30 per cent of all the offences committed during that time period. So what we are now seeing are juveniles increasingly committing violent offences,” Willoughby said. However, she said there was clear evidence to suggest that most of the young people committing these offences had either been expelled or left school at an early age. According to her, the time had come for educational reform to take place in Barbados. “I do not want to cast blame on our educational system but I think the time is right for reform within our education system in order for us to be able to address some of the issues we are seeing early and not wait until these persons are within the constraints of the RBPF,” she noted. (BT)
HANG THEM HIGH – Murderers deserve nothing less than the death penalty, says concerned citizen Steve Hunte, also known as “ The Sheriff”. And he turned up at The Nation yesterday with a noose to demand that the Attorney General move with speed to make hanging those who are convicted of killing possible again. Hunte, a plumber by profession who contested last year’s General Election as an Independent candidate, condemned those responsible for taking the lives of 20 people so far for the year. “We need to get Barbados cleaned up. We cannot use deterrents any more; we have to use detergents to clean the entire nation,” he said, echoing some of the views that have been expressed on The Nation’s Facebook page in recent days in response to gun violence. (SS)
TWO TO APPEAR IN CONNECTION WITH SHERATON INCIDENT – Hakeem Roberto Stuart, the man accused of the brazen shooting at Sheraton Centre that shocked the country last Wednesday, will appear in court tomorrow on two charges. He will appear with 2016 Pic-O-De-Crop monarch Aziza Kebret Tsgaye Clarke, 23 of Unit 4, Bonnetts, Brittons Hill, St Michael who has been charged in connection with the crime. Stuart, 21, of Shelbourne Gap, St Lawrence, Christ Church is accused of the murder of Damian Trotman of Foursquare, St Philip and with recklessly and unlawfully discharging a firearm in a public place, namely Sheraton Centre, placing a number of persons in danger of death or serious bodily harm. Clarke is facing seven charges. It is alleged that she knowing or believing that Stuart had committed murder, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse did assist him by transporting him in a motor car with the intention of impeding his arrest by police. She is also charged with assaulting police to prevent her arrest and resisting police in the execution of duty. Clarke is also accused of damaging a pair of sunglasses valued at $120 belonging to Patrick Forde without lawful excuse. Additionally, Clarke will have to answer to three traffic offences brought by police at Oistins. These are that as a driver she failed to stop at the sound of a siren of the approaching vehicle; that as the owner of MC92 she failed to register the vehicle with the Barbados Licensing Authority and the vehicle did not have car insurance. The accused will both appear at the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.(BT)
CLARKE BACK IN COURT IN APRIL – Murder accused Kadeem O’Brian Clarke appeared in the Oistins Magistrates’ Court today charged with the shooting death of Graeme Addison Norville. The 19-year-old of Johnson Road, Workmans, St George was not required to plea to the murder charge after it was read by Magistrate Elwood Watts. Norville alias Short Boss was shot and killed on February 16, 2019 at Rock Hall, St George. His was the 11th murder for the year. Accused Clarke will reappear at the District ‘B’ Magistrates’ Court on April 3, 2019 in connection with the murder charge and April 5, 2019 in the Holetown Magistrates’ Court on a cannabis charge, which allegedly occurred on March 24. (BT)
NEW YORKER REMANDED – A visitor to the island will spend the weekend at HMP Dodds after appearing in court today on five criminal charges. Krystal Ann Gatling, of Brooklyn, New York, a 32-year-old media manager, is charged with possession of cannabis, resisting and unlawfully and maliciously wounding police constable Calvin Grosvenor in the execution of his duty. She is also accused of assaulting Lisa Payne occasioning her actual bodily harm and unlawfully and maliciously wounding Kerry Ann Burnett all on March 28, 2019. She pleaded guilty to the cannabis charge but not guilty to all the other offences when she appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy Sargeant today. The accused was remanded to the St Philip institution to return before the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on April 1, 2019. (BT)
‘HOTHEAD’ TO SPEND 311 MORE DAYS IN DODDS – St Joseph resident Anthony Alonza Smith was given a 12-year prison sentence for endangering another man’s life when he aimed and discharged a firearm in his direction on April 1, 2012. However, a one third discount for his guilty plea and the 2,609 days already spent on remand, has left Smith of Clement Rock in Airy Hill, with less than a year to serve at Dodds. Madam Justice Pamela Beckles handed down the sentence today in the No. 5 Supreme Court in the case prosecuted by Senior Crown Counsel Krystal Delaney in which Smith pleaded guilty to possession of an illegal firearm and unlawfully and maliciously engaging in conduct that placed Jeremy Young in danger of death or serious bodily harm. Young was plying his trade as a coconut vendor at Four Roads, Sugar Hill, St Joseph when Smith, who was passing in a vehicle, steered it in his direction causing him to “jump” out the road. He later drove in the same area but stopped and got out of the vehicle. Fearing for his life Young ran on seeing the nozzle of a gun pointed at him and heard Smith utter the words “I going to kill one of wunna!” When Smith was arrested he told police: “Officer them won’t stop troubling my children. I shoot at them but I did only wanted to frighten them”. He then took police to the area were he had hidden the weapon. Smith who has eight prior convictions including assault, theft, wounding and possession of a 1.3 revolver previously expressed remorse for the crime telling officials that his head got hot and he lost his mind. In considering the mitigating and aggravating factors of the case Justice Beckles told Smith a custodial sentence was justifiable under the circumstances, as he had taken the law into his own hands. “The use of force by you was excessive and wholly out of proportion to any attack which you may have perceived that the accused and others had caused your children. Your intention was to scare the complainant but you did not shoot away from . . . or in the air but pointed the firearm at [him] and discharged a shot. The fact that he was not injured does not negate the fact of your intent . . .” She then imposed 12-year sentences on each count to run concurrently. Smith was given full credit for his time spent on remand of 2,609 days and a one third discount for his guilty plea leaving him with 311 days left in prison. (BT)
ZERO TOLERANCE – Lawless behaviour especially involving the use of fireams will not be tolerated in this society, Madam Justice Pamela Beckles has declared. She made the comment today as she sentenced a 31-year-old man who had previously pleaded guilty to firearm, ammunition and wounding charges to 14 years in prison. Delivering the sentence in the No. 5 Supreme Court this morning the judge outlined some of the facts previously detailed by Senior Crown Counsel Krystal Delaney in the cases against Armandeo Kephar Henderson Yearwood, of No. 5 St Catherine Close, Haynesville, St James – of using a firearm, possession of a 9mm semi automatic handgun, 17 rounds of ammunition as well as unlawfully and maliciously wounding Damien Reece on May 3, 2014. Reece was at a shop in Halls Village, St James with a group of people when a motor vehicle suddenly “pulled up” with three men who then got out and opened fire in their direction. Reece, who recognised Yearwood as one of the shooters as he fled for his life, later also realised that he had been shot in the arm and went to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. Others who also witnessed the shooting identified Yearwood as well and noted the licence plate of the car. A search warrant was executed at the accused’s house the following day. The firearm was found in a laundry basket along with a magazine containing 15 rounds of ammunition. Police also requested he hand over the clothes that he was wearing the day before and another two rounds of ammunition were found in his jeans pocket. Justice Beckles told Yearwood, who was represented by attorney-at-law Kyle Walkes, that his crimes were so serious that only a custodial sentence would suffice. “[You] discharged a firearm in public at a shop were persons were gathered. This was not spontaneous but premeditated in that you believed that someone had shot at you that morning . . . You went home and armed yourself with a loaded firearm and returned to the area . . . . And you discharged your firearm at the group with no regard for the innocent bystanders,” the judge stated. She then imposed a starting sentence of 12 years for use of a firearm, ten years for possession of a firearm, six years for possession of ammunition and six for wounding Reece. But after taking into consideration the aggravating factors of the case, the judge adjusted each sentence up by two years leaving Yearwood 14 years for use of firearm, 12 years for possession, eight years for ammunition and eight years for wounding, all to run concurrently. However, Madam Justice Beckles had to give Yearwood credit for his guilty plea and his 1,789 days already spent on remand, leaving him with four years 329 days left to serve at Dodds. A presentencing report which was previously read in court revealed the Yearwood began getting into trouble with the law from the age of 15. He also admitted that he became “totally immersed” in the block culture, smoking marijuana and consuming alcohol as well as forming close relations with negative influences. He was also assessed as being at a high risk of re-offending. Yearwood has six prior convictions among them possession of a flare gun and one round of ammunition, theft, robbery and criminal damage. Since being on remand for the 2014 offences he also became involved in three infractions – fighting, assault and using threatening words – for which he had to be sanctioned. Taking all of that into consideration Justice Beckles ordered that the convicted man undergo counselling programmes as maybe recommended by the prison’s psychologist to assist him in anger management and interpersonal relationships as well as any other areas of concern. Yearwood has also been advised to enrol in educational and vocational training during his incarceration. (BT)
SCHOOL SEX WORRY – Child protection agency authorities here are scratching their heads over what they see as a disturbing trend of minors having sex with minors at school. Coordinator of the Child Abuse Programme at the state-owned Child Care Board (CCB) Roxanne Sanderson-Weekes told Barbados TODAY this worrying development was particularly prevalent at certain schools outside of the St Michael catchment area. She did not name these schools. Sanderson-Weekes said what was of even more concern is that the majority of children engaged in this activity at school and targeted by adults outside of these learning institutions, are under age ten. “There was an increase in sexual abuse of young children under the age of 10 [2017-2018], both by adults and other minors. Minor on minor sex is a growing concern, especially at young ages. This is especially prevalent in the school environment,” the Child Care Board official said while providing overall child abuse statistics for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 periods. She revealed that the officers of the protection agency are also reporting a high rate of fondling of younger children, not only by adults, but also by older children. Sanderson-Weekes identified primary schools as the place where much of this sexual deviancy was happening. “What we are finding though is a lot of cases where there is minor on minor inter-sexual acts; and you are seeing a lot of them coming out of the primary schools. It is sexual abuse in a sense because they are either seeing it or hearing it or are exposed to it in some way. And you coming to school and you are now performing this act on somebody else…another child. So we see a lot of that, where you have to do a lot of counseling…and this is where you need to continue to reinforce this kind of discussion on proper sexual behavior within the school system,” she suggested. Sanderson-Weekes went further to illustrate the ages at which minors are being sexually abused. The senior officer revealed that last year, one child between ages five and 11 was raped while the same thing happened to 20 children ranging in ages 12 to 16. The Child Care Board official noted that seven children in the 5-11 age group reported being fondled and another was reportedly abused by the insertion of someone’s finger. Additionally, six children were subjected to inappropriate sexual exposure and two were the targets of sexual advances. She also lamented that one minor between ages five and 11 had oral sex performed on her while two – ages 12 – 16 – were on the receiving end of a similar act. “The majority of perpetrators of sexual abuse cases continues to be persons known to the victims. These are usually family members, peers from school, neighbours or the girls’ boyfriend.  In the case of a family member being the alleged perpetrator, this may necessitate the child being removed from that environment.  There were also cases of children contracting various sexually transmitted diseases as a result of being sexually abused,” she added. But while the authorities work to get a grip on the rising incidence of minor on minor sex acts in schools, they are reporting a gradual decline in the overall number of child abuse cases in the island. “For 2017-2018, the statistics show that we had 716 child abuse cases which affected 947 children. Of that, we had a total of 526 new cases which impacted 669 new children,” the child abuse programme coordinator told Barbados TODAY. She said that 2017-2018 figures showed a decrease over those for the 2016-2017 period. In the previous year, there were 206 cases more cases involving 265 more minors. The Child Care Board official disclosed that girls constituted the more frequently abused gender across most categories. For example, she cited the latest data for 2018 which showed that 101 girls were physically abused compared to 96 boys; 114 girls were victims of sexual abuse as against 28 boys; and 52 females experienced emotional abuse, two more than the males.  She stated that the males, however, were the ones more neglected by their parents (279/222) or abandoned (4/1). In expressing concern over the “very” young ages at which children are being abused these days, Sanderson-Weekes reported that up to age four, there were 43 cases of physical abuse of minors recorded and 28 sexual abuse; 179 cases of neglect; 26 of emotional trauma and two cases of abandonment. For those five years and under 12, some 84 were the victims of physical abuse; 40 sexual abuse; 176 were neglected; 34 emotionally abused and four abandoned while in the 12-16 age group there were 42 children who were physically abused; 71 sexually abused; 70 were neglected; 43 were subjected to emotional abuse and one was abandoned.    The spokesperson also said that despite a slight decrease in the reported cases of physical abuse, this still remains of major concern. She pinpointed the number of teenagers who are injured due to conflict between them and a parent contending that  poor parenting, particularly by younger parents, was also contributing to physical abuse. However, Sanderson-Weekes told Barbados TODAY that the Board had not gone asleep, when it came to reports of child abuse. She said the CCB continued to work with Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF) and its Sex Crime Unit to bring perpetrators before the law courts. According to her, in 2017, some 15 accused child sexual abusers were arrested and charged, while the number was eight last year. Two were placed before the courts for physical abuse in 2016, but none for last year. The figures supplied by the Child Care Board also showed that 20 of the 31 cases of sexual abuse reported to police were under investigation in 2018 along with one of the 17 cases of physical abuse turned over to the lawmen. DEBT DIALOGUE – As Government and companies continue to trim their workforces, one bank is receiving requests from Barbadians who have been placed on the breadline to discuss their debt. Director of retail banking channels at CIBC FirstCaribbean, Michelle Whitelaw, said yesterday that the bank sees an influx of customers, both in person and online. “Because of the climate we are in, we continue to have those conversations and we remain open to having those conversations,” said Whitelaw. “When you are going through those types of challenges, I am sure the last place you would want to come is into the banking environment to have more stress. So for me, it eases the customer that way,” said Whitelaw, adding that the bank has 22 000 digital banking clients. (SS)
80 GLAD TO GO – There were mixed emotions at the state-owned Transport Board yesterday after 80 of its employees spent their last day on the job. The staff from various departments volunteered to be separated or opted for early retirement from the cash-strapped corporation as it undergoes major restructuring. Workers exchanged hugs and kisses, and offered each other well wishes, as many wished the board all the best for the future on receipt of their separation packages. Oriel Clarke, who was with the board for 28 years, said he felt good to be going home.“To tell the truth, I feel good to be going home. . . It’s time to move on. A sportsman should bow out on top of his game, so I think a driver should bow out on top of his game [and] don’t wait to be pushed. I think this is the right time,” said Clarke, who is in his 50s. LIAT PILOTS AGREE TO SALARY CUT – Pilots employed with the cash-strap regional airline, LIAT, Friday confirmed that they had agreed to a less than 10 per cent salary cut in a bid to keep the airline in the air. President of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIAPA), Carl Burke, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that while he was not at liberty to disclose the exact amount the pilots had agreed to, pending the Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados receiving the necessary communication, he was nonetheless indicating that it was not the 10 per cent that had been requested. He said during a meeting with LIAT a request had been made for the 10 per cent pay cut across the board and that the pilots “wrote to them and said we did not have the confidence in LIAT’s management to take us out (of this)… and we were very cautious about making an investment in the company at this time. “We met with the shareholders on Tuesday and Prime Minister Mottley did give a guarantee at the shareholder level that she would ensure that there was accountability ad it would not be business as usual”. He said that pilots on Thursday night “actually voted” on the salary cut and which has since been communicated to Prime Minister Mottley. “At the moment I have to make sure that she has received our communication before I could give you that information.…(but) it is less than 10 per  cent, it is not 10 per cent,” Blake told CMC.  (SS)
RENT TO RISE – A top real estate executive has warned that office space rents could rise with the increase in property taxes announced in the recent Budget speech in spite of cuts in corporation taxes. Chief executive officer of Terra Caribbean Andrew Mallalieu said that the changes to property tax would “drive certain behaviours”. He told Barbados TODAY: “From the residential side, I don’t know if you are going to be seeing many changes as a result of it. I think there is no doubt that there is a higher cost of holding a property.  Land tax has gone up [and] property tax has gone up but matching with that there has been a reduction in personal income tax as well as corporate income tax. “I do think there will be some retail rents, commercial office rents which will have to go up and will go up because the property tax is not fixed in their rental agreements . . . so the tenants will see some increase in the rents in the commercial sector. Prime Minister Mottley announced that the rate on commercial properties will increase from 0.7 per cent to 0.95 per cent. Property owners with residential properties valued over $450 000 and up to $850 000 will see a rate increase to 0.7 per cent from 0.45 per cent, and properties valued over $850 000 will pay a rate of one per cent from 0.75 per cent. Responding to the new measure which is expected to rake in $61.9 million, Mallalieu pointed out that the residential property owners would be marginally impacted. But, highlighting the impact on larger commercial operations, he insisted that it would be difficult for some of them to bear. At the same time, he noted Government’s reduction in the corporation tax rate to between one and 5.5 per cent, stating that this could provide somewhat of an ease. Mallalieu said: “You have to remember that there has been significant release in both personal income tax and corporate income tax which for the vast majority of people there has been more relief than there has been increase on the property taxation.” Pointing to Government’s plan to liberalise the foreign exchange regime from July 1, the Terra Caribbean CEO said he believed this would influence property market behaviour. He said: “What I would hope that we see is that there would be a lot of certainty brought to the foreign direct investors in knowing they can buy a property in Barbados and freely trade it in US dollars. I think that is a huge movement that is going to bring confidence in the foreign direct investment part of the market.” Mallalieu contended that if the high-end market were boosted, there would be a “trickle-down effect” to the domestic real estate market. Managing director of Hannah Properties, Julie Dash, told Barbados TODAY she had no problem with the increase in land tax but said it was important that the valuations were carried out correctly. She said: “I have no problem with the increase in the land tax in both categories providing the properties are fairly valued by Land Tax. “Since the market has fallen by approximately 45 per cent across the board since 2010, Land Tax increased most people’s bills dramatically and it is now important that Land Tax value people’s properties fairly before they add this increase.” (BT)
RILEY SAYS HE FEELS SAFE – Embattled Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) president Conde Riley says the results of last week’s Cricket West Indies (CWI) elections should not cost him his job. Riley, who supported outgoing CWI president Wycliffe “Dave” Cameron in last Sunday’s elections in Jamaica, told the Saturday Sun he doesn’t fear any backlash at the forthcoming BCA elections, slated for July. “I have worked hard, whoever beats me has to overturn 200 votes. I haven’t done anything wrong. Barbados is performing well. “I want to start the indoor facility as soon as possible. We have had the drawings since 2005 but no one [is doing] anything and Kensington Oval Management Inc. (KOMI) will not allow us to start work on the nearby Armstrong building. (SS)
THUMBS UP FOR LAPATY - The appointment of Russell Latapy as head coach of the Barbados senior national football team has been given the thumbs up by two former national captains.  Last week during a press conference, Barbados Football Association (BFA) president Randy Harris announced that Latapy had signed a two-year-deal and would take up the position from April 1, 2019. The 50-year-old former attacking midfielder will take over from technical director Ahmed Mohamed, who was in charge of the senior national football team for the final time last Sunday when Barbados lost 1-0 to Nicaragua.  It’s the first time the BFA has appointed a head coach within recent years, a move which has been supported by ex-players and coaches. Former national captain Norman Forde told the Nation he totally agreed with Latapy’s appointment but held the view that a local coach should lend a helping hand. (SS)
OBA: ATHLETES DESERVE BETTER - Take sports and the state of the roofless National Stadium more seriously. Barbados’ lone Olympic Games individual medallist Obadele Thompson is pleading with Government and sports administrators to find the resources to get first-rate facilities for the country’s athletes.  “It is unfortunate that the National Stadium is in that condition. I am aware that repairing or even getting a new Stadium is a significant investment. I don’t know if things can be salvaged but something has to be done soon,” Thompson told THE NATION in a wide-ranging interview last Saturday. “But when you look at what sports means to so many people and how many young people are involved in sports, I think it is more an investment in the young people, who for the most part are 30 and under, to show them we believe in you and that we are committed to helping you as far as possible,” Thompson noted. He made the remarks after he was honoured by his alma mater, Harrison College, by the naming of the school’s sports facility the Obadele Thompson Sports Complex. (SS)
SUITES PRICE NOT SO SWEET – Barbadians are not sweetening up to a suite deal on offer. They are expressing outrage on social media about a $14 500 price tag for suites at the upcoming Buju Banton concert – The Long Walk to Freedom. For that price, 24 lovers of Buju and his music will have a luxury suite in the 3Ws Stand on April 27. They will have a private entrance to the venue, extra security, premium drinks and professional catering. Calling the amount “exhorbitant for a show”, some said the price tag doesn’t reflect what the organisers were offering after FAS7STAR posted the deal on the Internet on Wednesday as part of the five-day Barbados Reggae Festival next month. One poster who worked out the per-person price said that amounted to $600 a head. Some stated that it was outrageous how a show could advertise that price tag when people were expressing grief over the increased bus fare from $2 to $3.50. With the success of In The Heights behind him, Luke Sheppard returns to Southwark Playhouse to direct this Stephen Schwartz musical about working people. The book it is based on has the subtitle of ‘People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do’, although in this case, they sing too.
The musical is made up of a series of songs and monologues, rather than scenes and songs, and is an insight into the lives of real working people taken from interviews conducted by Studs Terkel in the 1970s. This updated version features new interviews which Stephen Schwartz led in 2006/7 to take account of the change in the workplace since the original book was published.
The show features music by Schwartz and various other composers including James Taylor and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Although each song has its own style, the source material is constant throughout so the piece becomes a musical, rather than a musical revue.
It is without doubt that this is an ensemble piece – and what an ensemble! Made up of Gillian Bevan, Dean Chisnall, Krysten Cummings, Siubhan Harrison, Peter Polycarpou and Liam Tamne, the six actors play 26 characters between them. Their combined experience and stunning vocals fill the very small space that is the Southwark Playhouse. Their performances are clear, well formed and intimate, and although it’s nice to see it in such a small theatre, the strength of these characters could fill a West End theatre (and I’m secretly hoping for a transfer!).
The cast is completed by six young actors, all making their professional debuts. At times acting almost as shadows or younger selves of the six older actors, they represent people coming into the workplace for the first time – as they themselves are. The total twelve cast members accompanied by a small but powerful band (brilliantly lead by Isaac McCullough) fill the theatre with beautiful harmonies and create a sound worthy of a West End stage.
There are certain standout performances. Liam Tamne’s ‘Delivery’ is a highlight (and feels like it’s straight out of In The Heights), Gillian Bevan’s ‘It’s An Art’ is stunning and Krysten Cummings’ Cleanin’ Women is a show stealer.
Luke Sheppard’s direction and Fabian Aloise’s choreography make it a smooth a slick evening and at just over an hour and a half, there’s not a second to breathe until the end. It’s a lot to take in, but every moment is well written and beautifully performed.
Review by Elliott Wallis
Working is the extraordinary genre-defining musical from Grammy and Academy Award winner STEPHEN SCHWARTZ (Wicked; Godspell) based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book of interviews with the American workforce.
This highly original and universal portrait of the American workday is told from the perspective of those that the world so often overlooks – the schoolteacher, the housewife, the fireman and the waitress amongst many – whose daily grind and aspirations reflect the truths of the people that make up a nation.
Employing a range of musical styles and genres from contributing composers such as five-time Grammy Award winner JAMES TAYLOR and Pulitzer Prize winner LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA (Hamilton; In The Heights), Working makes for a strikingly dynamic and contemporary look at what it is to work and what it is to be a musical.
Working receives its European premiere from Luke Sheppard, the acclaimed director of the Olivier Award-winning In The Heights.
