Ghosts and Succession
Yayy thank you bb <3
Ghosts:
Favourite character: JAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. My other favorites are Thor and Sas though <3
Funniest character: This is really hard, a lot of them are really funny but for different reasons/in different ways! I think I'm gonna go with Hetty? Her delivery is just always on point and I think a lot of my laughing-out-loud moments have come from her.
Best-looking character: BIG tossup for me between Jay, Thor, and Sas lol
3 favourite ships: Sam/Jay <3 <3 <3 After that I'm fairly neutral, though I've warmed up to Thor/Flower.
Least favourite character: UHHHH let's say Ari
Least favourite ship: I'm again, neutral on fairly every other ship. I guess the one I'm least open to would be like. Does anyone ship Thor/Hetty? If they do then that one a;lsdkf;aljsfasjf
Reason why I watch it: It makes me happy <3 I love this little family and this is a good fun 20-25 minutes of dopamine
Why I started watching it: I think it was just because I knew Utkarsh and Rose were in this show as the mains LMAO
Succession:
Favourite character: Kendall but like, in the case of the people who I want to see happy, Jess & Stewy a;sldkjaslkfj
Funniest character: This is actually REALLY hard because there's a lot of humor in this. I think Connor always consistently makes me howl though.
Best-looking character: My god Stewy
3 favourite ships: Kenstewy, Conwilla (my toxic trait is that I DO hope these crazy kids will make it) and uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Rava/beating Ken to death with a hammer (genuinely not sure? I would have said Tomgreg but I'm not a Tomshiv cringefail marriage appreciator so asdjfkl)
Least favourite character: Logan :)
Least favourite ship: God it's so hard there's so many asdfjkl ships. Let's say RomanGerri in terms of what's kind-of-canon in the show
Reason why I watch it: There's like. Something really interesting in seeing this tragedy and the cycle of abuse repeat itself and seeing these horrible people who are just garbage but seeing things that make you empathize and even relate to them. Like seeing people with your specific traumas and seeing them be the worst possible versions of themselves and not having to worry about them having a happy ending or not is like. Weirdly very cathartic I think?
Why I started watching it: I thought it was a business sitcom where Kendall was the gay son who recently came out lmao
Send me a TV series!

Right here’s Why This Bouquet of Purple Roses Prices $72 in NYC.
To assemble each final stem and ribbon, Mr. Patrikis is on the telephone continuously, negotiating with 15 distributors to get the very best offers.“In case you don’t know learn how to purchase from the wholesalers, the wholesalers are going to purchase you,” he mentioned.Relying on a stem’s size, the dimensions of the bloom and the nation of origin, a dozen roses in New York Metropolis can value a buyer from $10 from a avenue vendor to greater than $120 from a high-end florist. Mr. Patrikis prefers the Explorer number of pink roses, which he mentioned are likely to have bigger blooms and keep contemporary longer than another varieties.Gross sales within the flower business, the place same-day, native deliveries are widespread, shot up early through the pandemic. So did the worth of doing enterprise, with rising gasoline prices, a flower scarcity and provide chain issues. The elevated costs put stress on longtime florists like Mr. Patrikis, whose store was one among 5 on his block round 2010. Ditmars Flower Store is now the final one left.“We have been by no means busier in our lifetime,” Mr. Patrikis, 37, mentioned about reopening in time for Mom’s Day in 2020 after the earliest closures within the pandemic. “We didn’t sleep for per week.”People spent practically $73 billion on flowers, seed and potted vegetation final 12 months, up 48 p.c from 2019 after adjusting for inflation, based on the U.S. Bureau of Financial Evaluation. However there are indicators of instability within the business.Troy Conner, the president of Kendall Farms, a big flower farm in Fallbrook, Calif., that sells to grocery store chains and wholesalers, mentioned that lots of his prices had skyrocketed, too.Starting final 12 months, he mentioned, demand for flowers had began to degree off. He mentioned he would possibly repurpose some land reserved for rising sunflowers, as soon as a worthwhile crop, to boost goats as an alternative. At Ditmars Flower Store, Mr. Patrikis mentioned, the revenue margin has shrunk because the begin of the pandemic, from 20 to 30 p.c, all the way down to 10 to twenty p.c. The store may need gross sales of $150,000 to $300,000 a month. He mentioned greater gross sales quantity had allowed him to make up the distinction thus far. This 12 months, he expects to promote greater than 100,000 pink roses, his hottest merchandise, up from 70,000 in 2019. On Valentine’s Day, the busiest vacation, he sells 15,000 roses. The Society of American Florists, a commerce group, predicts that the variety of flower outlets within the nation will drop to 11,000 by 2026, partly due to retirements and consolidation. There have been 11,600 in 2021.In final 12 months’s third quarter, there have been 398 florists in New York Metropolis, down from 432 in the identical interval in 2019, based on James Parrott, a director with the Heart for New York Metropolis Affairs on the New Faculty.Mr. Patrikis’s father, John, a Greek immigrant from the island of Nisyros, bought flowers within the subway and ultimately opened his first flower store in Astoria in 1983 earlier than shifting to the present 1,500-square-foot store in 2008.Mr. Patrikis mentioned he felt obliged to remain within the household enterprise. Gross sales stay brisk, largely as a result of he has a broad vary of shoppers — weddings, funerals, Greek Orthodox church buildings. Nonetheless, he worries about client spending habits, now that almost all pandemic-era authorities advantages have dried up.He’s optimistic about his personal future, although, as a result of his household purchased their constructing in 2003.“The one ones who're going to be left are those who personal their buildings,” he mentioned.Ben Casselman contributed reporting.Produced by Eden Weingart, Andrew Hinderaker and Dagny Salas. Movies I watched this week - 50
The Hand of God, my third Paolo Sorrentino’s film (After ‘The Great Beauty’ and ‘Youth’). Sheer movie making delights from the new Fellini, like current Amarcord but for Napoli in 1984, the year Maradona was transferred there. Interesting that the young protagonist is listening to his Walkman throughout, but we never find out what he’s listening to. Superb - 9/10.
✴️
2 (and again) by Hiromasa Yonebayashi:
✳️✳️✳️ Yonebayashi worked for Ghibli for 18 years before leaving in 2014 to establish his own Studio Ponoc. It is obvious that he sees himself as heir apparent to Hayao Miyazaki, and deservedly so. Mary and the Witch’s Flower is the first film he directed there.
A psychedelic fairy tale about another young girl who becomes a witch combines the emotional twists from ‘Spirited Away’, basic story from ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’ and Ponyo’s magic, together with Harry Potter adventures. The animation kept changing unexpectedly at least 10-15 times into new, phantasmagorical styles. Highly creative!
Together with ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’, I’ve now seen all three films he directed. One of my best movies of the year!
✳️✳️✳️ When Marnie Was There, seeing it once again after just one week. "I missed you. I kept calling you in my heart." Just beautiful.
✴️
Antonioni’s 1960 rule-breaker L'Avventura. Visually & stylishly innovative, I loved the early part on the island, as Monica Vitti is looking for her disappeared friend. But I didn’t ‘get’ the changing focus of the story, as it moves later into the empty, doomed attraction between her and her friend’s former lover. (Photo Above).
✴️
2 With Adrien Brody, Fisher Stevens AND Larry Pine:
✳️✳️✳️ Season 3 of Succession, a modern day ‘Dallas’, about a despicable ‘King Lear’ mogul and his mediocre four kids. Tedious, brutal and fascinating dive into the depravity of greed, power and abuse. This repetitive season continued with the complete disintegration of ‘Dark Prince’ Kendall Roy, and of patriarch Roy Logan who keeps assuring that his children hate one another just enough to never take sides against him. Why is it so compelling to watch, when it’s clear from the get go that all four heirs are too incompetent to take over the father’s role?
“I’ve seen you get fucked a lot, and I’ve never seen Logan get fucked once...”
✳️✳️✳️ The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun, Wes Anderson’s intellectual homage to The New Yorker magazine and to the mid-centrury Paris of Jacques Tati. It’s a really good movie for people who like that sort of movies.
(For me, I still can’t stand Owen Wilson). 6/10
✴️
I’m going to go through the Steven Soderbergh‘s films I missed up to now. First watch: The Limey, a standard crime story with Terence Stamp, which unusually flashes back to scenes from ‘Poor Cow’, a much earlier Stamp film done by Ken Loach. 3/10.
✴️
I Was at Home, But, an award-winning, SUPER-slow German film directed by Angela Schanelec, of the “First wave Berlin School”. The puzzling story of a grief-stricken, single mother with two kids struggling to keep it together two years after her husband died. It starts with a static, long shot of a donkey and a dog walking into an abandoned living room. Reminiscent of Bresson, Ozu and Roy Andersson. 5/10.
✴️
Fabulous deadpan comedian Steven Wright X 2:
✳️✳️✳️ TV on YouTube: Steven Wright appeared on Craig Ferguson’s show 22 times. They both had a blast. 9/10
✳️✳️✳️ I never knew that he actually won an Oscar in 1988 for his offbeat film, The Appointments of Dennis Jennings. As if a disturbed inner dialogue from his stand-up, was made into a strange short comedy. With Mike Starr as the doorman / substitute psychiatrist, and Rowan Atkinson as his real, bored psychiatrist.
✴️
Shadows and Fog, Woody Allen’s misfired German Expressionist experiment, an idiotic Kafkaesque indulgent, a-la Fritz Lang, Pabst and Murnau. One of his worst movies. 2/10
✴️
2 more re-watches:
✳️✳️✳️ San Junipero is considered by some as one of the best Black Mirror episodes, because of its unusual uplifting tone. But even after watching it a few times, I still don’t see it. Maybe because the dating scenes were too young for me, or because the simulated reality background is hokum, or because its “daring” same-sex happy ending story was mundane.
✳️✳️✳️ Guilty pleasure: The perfect Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with François Truffaut as Claude Lacombe. George Lucas was sure that the movie will be such a colossal hit so he traded points with Spielberg before the premiers. He gave 2.5% of Star Wars profits against 2.5% of Close Encounters.
(I remember taking David to the original viewing, when he was 7 in 1977.)
✴️
Alan J. Pakula’s Presumed Innocent, a terrible court “drama” with Harrison Ford and Raul Julia. Uninspired piece of average trash. 1/10

Unexpected
Pairing: Liam x MC (Kendall Mason)
Summary: The Walker/Beaumont wedding doesn’t go as planned.
I’m tired of my faves being held hostage on that God forsaken ranch like they’re trapped in the AHS Murder House, so I wrote this.
Word Count: 2.8K+
The day of the Walker-Beaumont wedding is a very busy one. And no one has been busier than Queen Kendall herself. She’s been up since 5AM, helping the planners get everything together, making sure Savannah was calm and collected, keeping Leona and Barthelemy from killing each other, the works.
The effects of the day are starting to wear on her. Kendall has been up for almost 8 hours straights, running solely on coffee and sheer determination. Yes, she feels exhausted. Sure the coffee is making her dizzy and if she drinks any more, she might pass out, but she can power through, at least until the ceremony is over.
“You need to eat something,” Madeleine says, catching Kendall in a rare moment alone. “Like, at least a bowl of cereal.”
Kendall shakes her head at the idea. “I’m already dressed. I’m not running the risk of getting milk on my dress minutes before the ceremony.”
Madeleine sighs. “You’re on the verge of crashing. At least eat a piece of fruit. Or a granola bar.”
Kendall doesn’t respond to Madeleine. Instead she walks to the kitchen and plucks an apple out of the large fruit bowl sitting on the kitchen counter. She takes a large bite. “Happy now?”
“Ecstatic,” Madeleine replies dryly. “God, must you always be so petulant and stubborn?”
“Madeleine, I really don’t have time to listen to you today, especially since you weren’t even invited on this trip, you just weaseled your way in,” Kendall snaps in a rare outburst. “So why don’t you go find your seat? The ceremony starts in a few minutes.”
Madeleine looks taken aback by the harshness in Kendall’s time, but she doesn’t argue with her. She knows that’ll only end in disaster. She just turns on her heel and walks off, mumbling under her breath.
With the blonde woman gone, Kendall breathes a sigh of relief. The last thing she needs is her breathing down her neck all day
She quietly munches on her apple, ignoring the fact that she really doesn’t want to eat it and her stomach is doing somersaults at the taste. Has she gotten used to only eating Cordonian Rubies? Are they the pinnacle of apples?
“Kendall!” Kendall snaps out of her thoughts and sees Hana. “Come on, the ceremony is about to start!”
Five minutes later, the ladies were in the Walkers’ spacious backyard. A gorgeous archway covered in various flowers is set up under a pair of trees, and Bertrand was standing at the altar, a smiling Maxwell next to him. Liam’s standing in the center of the archway, as he is the officiant.
Kendall’s heart beats double time at the sight of her husband. He looks extra handsome in his royal regalia and she tries to keep her more impure thoughts at bay. A wave of lightheadedness hits, much stronger than the last one, but she manages to brush it off and continues walking. Thankfully no one notices.
Liam smiles back at her as she reaches the end of the aisle. “You look absolutely beautiful.”
“Thank you. This was a rush job, so my hair and makeup aren’t the best.”
“Could’ve fooled me. You’re still the most stunning woman here.”
“I married the most charming man on earth,” Kendall muses. “How did I get so lucky?”
“I’m the lucky one in this scenario.”
“Hey, your wedding is over!” Olivia hisses with an eye roll. “Save the lovey dovey shit for the current bride and groom.”
Before Kendall can respond, the wedding march starts. Everyone stands up and turns around, spotting Bartie toddling down the aisle, in front of Savannah’s who’s being escorted by Drake.
They make it halfway down the aisle before Kendall realizes if she doesn’t sit down somewhere and soon, she’s going to be extremely sick. Her heart rate—which she originally chalked up to being a young newlywed excited to see her husband—has yet to return to normal, and the ground underneath her feet is unsteady. Before she can even attempt to excuse herself, she drops onto the ground with a hard thud and everything around her goes black.
~~/~~
When Kendall finally comes to, she’s no longer in the Walker’s backyard, but what looks like a hospital room. It’s not too bright, as the lights have been dimmed, but there is a loud and persistent beeping noise that won’t go away.
“Where am I?” She asks, and god does she instantly regret it. Her throat is so dry, and talking only makes it sore.
Liam, who’s been sitting at her bedside, perks up at her voice. “Kendall? Thank heavens, you’re awake!” He reaches across her bed and presses the small red button, alerting her doctor to come to her room.
“I need water,” she manages to croak out.
“Of course.” Liam grabs the cup of ice water on Kendall’s small bedside table and raises the straw to her lips. She greedily gulps down the water, unaware of how thirsty she truly is.
“Thank you.”
Liam puts the cup down and runs a hand across Kendall’s cheek. He kisses her forehead. “You gave me quite a fright.”
“What happened? Am I in the hospital?”
“Yes. You collapsed at Bertrand and Savannah’s wedding.”
“What? Oh god, how embarrassing.”
“What’s embarrassing about it?”
“Collapsing in itself is embarrassing, and I’m sure everyone was gawking at me. And I ruined their wedding. They can’t even continue on without us because you’re the officiant and I’m the maid of honor.”
Liam dismisses the concern with a hand wave. “Nonsense. Bertrand and Savannah will survive. They know they can always find another officiant or they’ll have to wait. You come first.”
Kendall tries to sit up, but she’s exhausted and moving is too much effort. “Did the doctor at least say why I passed out?”
“When we first brought you in, she told me that your blood pressure was low. They drew blood, but those results haven’t come in yet.”
“Don’t tell Madeleine, but she was right, I should’ve eaten something.”
“Yes, you should’ve,” Liam agrees.
“Does the press know I’m here?”
“No. You weren’t wheeled in through the emergency room so no one really saw, and you were checked in under an alias. Any unsuspecting nurses and orderlies think someone named Isabel Martin is occupying this room. Plus, this is a private suite, only your nurse and doctor have access.”
“Okay.” That lessens some of the embarrassment. The last thing she needs is to be plastered on newspapers and on CNN, looking weak on a world stage.
There’s a small knock on the door and in walks a doctor. She smiles nervously upon seeing Kendall. “Hello!”
“Hi, doctor.”
“This is my first time meeting actual royalty. Do I address you as Your Highness? Your Grace? Queen Kendall? Your Majesty?” The doctor drops into an awkward bow. “Do I courtesy to you?”
Kendall shakes her head. “We’re on your turf, and calling me Kendall is just fine.”
“Very well. Hello Kendall, I’m your doctor, Dr. Washington. I’m an attending ER physician here at the hospital.”
“Nice to meet you. Will I be okay?”
“There are a few things I want to go over with you, point by point.” The doctor turns to look at Liam before turning back to Kendall. “With all due respect, is it okay if your husband stays?”
“Of course it is! You may speak freely in front of him.”
“We just have to make sure.” Dr. Washington logs into a computer and pulls up Kendall’s chart. “Your blood pressure was low, that’s probably why you fainted. We gave you some fluids to get you re-hydrated, so you should feel better soon. You need to be very conscious of how much water you drink, especially in a place like this, where it gets very hot. Your blood sugar was also low, so just make sure you’re eating enough throughout the day. I’m sure your schedule can be hectic, but you have to carve out time to eat, with some light snacking between meals.”
Kendall nods, taking in the information. “Will do.”
“And there’s one more thing I think you should be aware of: you’re pregnant.”
If Kendall wasn’t already in bed, she’s almost positive she would have collapsed again. Pregnant? She was actually pregnant? “What? How?”
“I think you guys know how.”
“But I took a test last week and it was negative.”
“Well you’re only about 6 weeks along, so you probably took the EPT too early. We did a blood test, and we can detect levels of hCG that are too low to be found in urine.”
Kendall feels Liam squeezing her hand tightly, but it barely registers. She suddenly remembers the alcohol she indulged in last week.
“Since I thought the test was negative, I haven’t been the most careful person. I had a glass of champagne at my friend’s bachelorette party, and I drank a lot of caffeine.” A tear rolls down her cheek. She’s already a horrible mother and her child isn’t even a fetus yet. “Will the baby be okay?”
Dr. Washington briefly glances at one of the monitors attached to Kendall, and she reaches out to touch the queen’s arm. “First things first, I need you to stay calm. You're not the first mom to be who drank before finding out she was pregnant, and you won’t be the last. Now that you know you’re pregnant, I say stop drinking alcohol immediately, and limit caffeine to one cup of coffee per day. But it’s still so early in the pregnancy, I don’t think one glass of champagne and some coffee will have an effect on the baby’s development.”
“Calm?” Kendall chuckles humorlessly. “My entire country’s future rests on my reproductive organs.”
“That may be the case, but none of that matters if you don’t have a successful pregnancy and delivery, and staying as stress free as possible is key. That’s the goal right?”
“Of course.”
“Don’t worry, Doctor, I’ll make sure she takes it easy,” Liam assures.
“Now Kendall, I think you’ll be okay, so I’m prescribing you some R&R. Pregnancy can make your blood sugar and blood pressure drop, because the baby is taking all of your nutrients and making your body work overtime. So I am forcing you to take it easy. Make sure you get something to eat, keep your feet elevated, drink plenty of water, and have your husband wait on you hand and foot for a few days.”
Liam smiles. “I don’t need to be told to do that.”
“And last but not least, congratulations! If you want, I can page one of our attending obstetricians to come down. It’s too early for an ultrasound, but they can go over more things with you if you have any questions.”
Kendall looks at Liam who’s just as eager as she is. She turns back to the doctor with a nod. “Yes. We’d like that very much.”
~~/~~
“Are you guys sure you can’t come back to the ranch tonight?”
Liam can hear the disappointment in Bertrand’s voice. “Yes. Kendall is exhausted, and I think there’s too much going on at the ranch, and her doctor said she needs some quiet and relaxation. If she’s there, she won’t relax.”
“That’s true. What was wrong with her?”
“She just pushed herself too hard. Lack of sleep, stress, the works,” Liam replies, not giving away any detail. “I’m sorry that I wasn’t there to officiate for you.”
“Don’t apologize, your wife is your priority. Thankfully Bianca’s minister was in attendance and he gladly married us.”
“Congratulations. I hope married life treats you well.”
“I do too. Will we see you guys tomorrow? Bianca is throwing us another get together, a goodbye party of sorts.”
“Yes, we’ll be back tomorrow,” Liam assures Bertrand. “Enjoy your reception tonight.”
“Will do. Take care of Kendall.”
“Absolutely.” Liam hangs up.
While Kendall was still in the hospital, Liam asked Hana to pack them a small overnight bag and bring it to the hospital. Liam decided that Kendall had a bit too much ranch living and thought it would be best if he got a hotel room for the night. That way, there would be no distractions, no noise, and no people bothering them.
He decided on the Ritz Carlton, and when the manager of the hotel realized that a king and their American queen would be staying with them, he gave them the entire top floor to themselves, for maximum privacy.
Liam walks back into their bedroom and finds Kendall sprawled out on the bed, wrapped up in a large white bathrobe. He gets into the bed with her. “How are you feeling?”
“Tired,” she answers honestly. “Like I can sleep for a year.”
“It’s been a long day, you deserve some rest.”
“I still feel bad about missing the wedding though.”
Liam sighs softly. He truly married the best person in the world. She was always looking out for others, even at the expense of herself. She deserve a night to be selfish.
“We can make it up to them tomorrow. They’re having another party before we all leave. And we’ll get them a very nice gift.”
“An amazing gift.”
“An amazing gift,” Liam repeats with a smile. “It’s been such a crazy day, I don’t even think we’ve had time to properly celebrate the good news. You’re pregnant!”
The words sound like music to Kendall’s ears. “When I took the test and it came back negative, I lost a bit of hope. I thought we’d be a couple who went through years of trying before it finally happened.”
“But we didn’t.” Liam gently tugs on the belt keeping Kendall’s robe secure, letting it fall open. He places a warm palm on her stomach, stroking the skin with affection. They actually had a baby in there. He was going to be a dad. “I am married to the love of my life, the most amazing woman I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, and you’re giving me a beautiful baby. You’ve made me the happiest man alive, Kendall. You’ve made all of my wildest dreams come true. And I hope we have a girl who looks exactly like you.”
“And she’ll have an accent like you, and speak fluent Greek and Italian.”
“Or maybe she’ll take after you and talk in a New York accent.”
Kendall rolls her eyes. “I don’t have an accent.”
“You do, and I think it’s adorable,” Liam argues.
“Well whatever we have, boy or girl, they’ll be the most loved baby in the world. Hana and Bertrand will fret with them over etiquette, Maxwell will teach them how to dance.”
“Olivia will probably teach them how to conceal weapons on their person.”
“After they turn 18.”
“Of course.”
Kendall reaches out and strokes Liam’s cheek. “Can I make one request?”
Liam catches Kendall’s wrist and kisses it gently. “You can make as many requests as you want, my queen.”
“I don’t want to tell anyone yet, at least until I’m out of the first trimester. And even when we tell people, it’s only our immediate circle. Let's not make an official, public announcement until we absolutely have to. I know we’re the king and queen, and we owe it to our people to keep them abreast on our lives, but I still want us to be a normal newlywed couple. I just want to enjoy this as much as I can, as much as we can.”
“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” Liam says after a moment. “Though part of me would love to shout our good news from the highest mountain top, I also want to privately revel in this, with you.”
“Thank you.”
“Of course.”
Liam shifts his body and places a kiss on Kendall’s stomach. “Hello there, little one! I don’t know if you have ears yet, but I am going to talk to you anyway. I love so much already, and I’m incredibly honored to be your dad. I can’t wait to watch you grow up and explore. I can’t wait to show you all of the things my father never showed me. You and your mother are the most important things in my life, and I look forward to telling you that every single day.”
A tears slips down Kendall’s cheek and she tries to wipe it away before Liam notices. It doesn’t work. “Why are you crying?”
“I don’t know. Because I have an amazing, wonderful, beautiful husband whom I love. Because I’m having a baby with him, which is all I wanted to do. Because I’m just so ridiculously, deliriously happy in this moment.” Kendall sees Liam’s own eyes are glistening, unshed tears threatening to spill. “Why are you crying?”
Liam smiles, a smile so wide and bright, Kendall is afraid he might split his face in half. “I’m happy too. Actually, happy doesn’t even begin to describe it. I’m euphoric. It almost doesn’t seem real.”
“Well it’s real.”
Liam drops another kiss onto Kendall’s stomach. She can already tell he’s going to do this all day, every day. And honestly, she can’t wait.
“We should order room service,” Liam murmurs against her skin. “Are you hungry?”
“Starving.”
“Let’s order some food, and whatever looks best on the dessert menu. And then we can order a movie.”
“On one condition.”
“Whatever you want.”
“You have to put on the other fluffy robe.”
“Deal.”

Our Favorite Female Characters
This week in our book chat we discussed our favorite female characters. I noticed as I was getting ready for our discussion how many of the books I’ve read have male protagonists and I thought my reading habits were pretty diverse. It just shows you how deeply embedded norms are in our culture and reminds us how we need to be constantly aware of the need to be diverse in our reading habits.
We did get to reminisce about some great female characters and share why we were so taken with them. The following are the characters we love:
Alma Whitaker, The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert
When I first thought of this topic the first character to come to mind was Alma Whittaker. What I love about Alma is how Elizabeth Gilbert allowed her to have sexual desires. Very few female characters, especially ones set in the 19th century, are portrayed as having any sexual needs and if they are plain or homely, as Alma was, then the possibility of them being portrayed as sexual beings is reduced to zero. Alma is portrayed as a strong, intelligent, independent woman with all the needs and desires a woman has.
Cathy Ames aka Kate Trask, East of Eden by John Steinbeck
The next character that came to mind is one I love to hate, Cathy Trask. I usually like more balanced characters, being that my belief is that no one is all good or all evil but a mix of the two, but Steinbeck makes Cathy sooooo evil from day one that you just can’t forget her. She has to be the evilest woman in fiction.
Lisbeth Salander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (etal The Millinneum Trilogy) by Stieg Larsson
And of course we had to mention Lisbeth Salander, (the original Girl in the title). The things Larsson does with gender in these books is refreshing. We get to know Lisbeth slowly throughout the trilogy, and begin to see and understand how she became the woman that she is. She is definitely a more balanced and realistic character, than Cathy Ames. These books are great in having both a great plot and great character development.
Aaliya Saleh, An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine
Aaliya is a 72 year old woman living a solitary life in Beirut. Divorced at 20 years old she has spent the past 52 years living alone, just her and her books. She translates these books into Arabic for her own pleasure, revealing her hobby to no one. Aaliya is a strong independent woman who knows what she enjoys and lives her life doing it
Lillian Boxfish, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney
Lillian (Inspired by the life and work of poet and ad woman Margaret Fishback) was "the highest paid advertising women in America" Lillian is a survivor. She persisted in the days when being a woman meant being paid less because you didn't "have families to support". She’s a smart, strong and witty woman, who at the age of eighty-five is still full of life.
Janie Mae Crawford, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston
Janie is a woman that defies gender stereotypes and insists on her independence. She shows a curiosity and confidence and maturity that guide her through the novel to becoming a strong and proud woman.
Addie Moore, Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf
Addie Moore is a 70ish widow who decides to stop caring about what other people think and live her life doing what makes her happy. A strong, independent woman.
Ruth Jefferson, Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult
Ruth is a strong black woman dealing with racism in her job as a labor and delivery nurse.
The Second Mrs. de Winter, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
We never do get to know the second Mrs. de Winter’s name
Scout aka Jean Loise Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
The female characters from the following books;
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Any female characters from the following authors:
Barbara Kingsolver
Isabelle Allende
Erica Jong
What We’ve been Reading
An Untamed State by Roxane Gay A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney Anything is Possible by Elizabeth Strout First Dads by Joshua Kendall Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders The Thirst by Jo Nesbo The Book of Joy by Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu Divorce Papers by Susan Rieger The Heirs by Susan Rieger
Other Books we mentioned:

How summer festivals became fashion’s ‘fifth season’
The fashion calendar has long held a familiar cadence, anchored by the autumn and spring collections that are interspersed with pre-fall and resort deliveries. But a fifth moment has made its way into the lineup, a new occasion driving shoppers to stores—festival season.
Global music festivals have disrupted the fashion lineup, providing a fresh—and, some say, blissfully trend-resistant—opportunity for dressing. Stylish, ready-to-spend customers are paying plenty to attend Vive Latino in Mexico City, Golden Plains in Victoria, Australia, and Glastonbury in the UK, and buying a new outfit has become part of the fun. Designers are meeting the need with special collections and festival-specific pieces. The new season has birthed its own set of staples, like bralettes and crossbody bags, breathing new life into those retail categories.
“It’s our Super Bowl,” says designer Rebecca Minkoff. Her contemporary designs fit seamlessly into the festival landscape, especially Coachella, the two-weekend festival that took place in southern California earlier this month. Minkoff and her team first attended the two-weekend celebration years ago and, while there, began counting the number of times they saw Minkoff’s products on attendees. “We realised they were numbering in the thousands,” she says.
The prevalence of her designs prompted Minkoff to devote more time and resources towards meeting those customers’ needs. Now, she creates a special collection for the three months that make up festival season, what she calls a “layer on top” of her spring delivery. Hands-free bags are a key part of her offering, beginning with the classic crossbody and growing to include belt bags and backpacks. Runway trends have a bit of an influence—nylon, a big part of the ’90s resurgence, was a popular fabrication for her bags this year—but festival-goers tend to be focused on a singular look, channeling their “inner Woodstock,” she says. That means fringe, “whether it is in or not.”
the 1st pic is how i feel about 90 million of you! lots of love
A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on Apr 23, 2018 at 9:55pm PDT
Spending on festival dressing is hard to quantify and largely anecdotal—statistics on the growing market are focused on ticket prices and purchases at festivals—but designers and retailers that cater to this crowd say it is big and continues to grow.
The festival look, and its key components, first cropped up with Kate Moss at Glastonbury in the early ’00s. The supermodel donned cut-off jean shorts and alternated between fringe suede moccasin boots and Hunter wellies while she stomped around the muddy grounds, to the envy of many. Later, appearances by British It-Girls Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung added more of a boho-vibe.
In recent years, a newer guard led by the likes of Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Bella and Gigi Hadid has upped the ante. Fellow attendees, armed with camera phones, spread that style to the far corners of the internet, making the look a #MustHave for the masses.
Festival style teetered on costumes for a minute there around 2015, with an overabundance of flower crowns and glitter tattoos. But it evolved in recent years, as it became clear that these festivals were more than a passing fad. “It’s gone from a cliché to something more cool and individualised,” says model-turned-designer Anine Bing. “Festival collections became the new resort collections for a younger crowd.”
A post shared by
(@bellahadid) on Apr 14, 2018 at 2:51pm PDT
Kendall Jenner stripped down to one of Bing’s lace bras for Coachella two years ago, wearing the lingerie piece as a top—the first celeb to do so, according to the designer. “We make these staples precisely because they inspire people to put their personal stamp on them by styling them in unexpected ways,” Bing says. Jenner paired it with leather lace-up short-shorts, a kimono shawl and a Gucci crossbody. The barely-there look was heavily photographed, a boost for Bing and the lingerie industry as a whole, and contributed to the bralette’s newfound status as a coveted piece. Jenner later wore Bing’s bra on top of a white T-shirt—another first. “That definitely encouraged other women to wear lingerie in creative ways,” she added.
The trend is a boon to retailers, giving people more than just a reason to shop, but a specific occasion associated with a handful of prescribed pieces. Candice Fragis, buying and merchandising director of Farfetch has noted that the brands that aren’t typically associated with the high fashion world have benefitted from the rise of festival attire as practical additions to any ensemble, such as Hunter boots and Patagonia jackets. And any line with a festival aesthetic as part of its DNA—like the fringe tops and beaded headbands from Caravana—stands to do well this time of year.
Since festival season doesn’t fall neatly into the existing fashion calendar, and festival dates are scattered around the world, retailers like Net-a-Porter often rely on exclusives and capsule collections to “cater to these moments,” says Lisa Aiken, retail fashion director. What Aiken calls “high summer” has become an important season for the site, she says, made up primarily of vacation pieces that can be “interpreted into festival dressing.” The site even featured a Coachella guide for the last season, which included a $1,360 Isabel Marant white crochet bodysuit.
At Revolve Clothing, festival season is big enough to be “equivalent to the holiday season for other retailers,” says Lauren Yerkes, president of buying and merchandising. The Los Angeles-based e-commerce retailer sees festival attire as a natural extension of its southern California roots. “Calling all hot hippies, indie babes, street hunnies and flower power girls,” the website reads. “We have the perfect outfits to fit your vibe.” The site’s festival collection extends to beauty too, with a specially-themed box of products as part of a collaboration with influencer and YouTuber Jenn Im. It promises to provide all the essentials, including eucalyptus-scented deodorant, waterproof mascara, three shades of glittery eye shadow and, of course, sunscreen.
To help make festivals even more fashionable, brands like Revolve staged parties and special events at or near the main event. Revolve upped its game this year with its own mini-music festival alongside Coachella, featuring its own musical acts (including A$AP Rocky and Snoop Dogg). Revolve’s network of power influencers was out in full force—Emily Ratajkowski and Nicole Richie were scheduled to appear. Dubbed #REVOLVEfestival, it was billed as a “two-day FOMO-inducing party.”
It’s perhaps the most extreme example of a retailer doing what it can to ensure the season continues to grow. But ultimately, the staying power of festival shopping depends almost entirely on the popularity of the festivals themselves. Festival dressing requires a festival—one that people want to pay to attend. But fringe lovers have no need to fear. As long as big-name acts continue to participate—Beyoncé at this year’s Coachella, for example—it’s safe to say the fashionable throngs will be there, and will need something new to wear.

Sweet Bliss- A Poem by Kendall Harrison
Its 1 am and you think I love her You have just closed up the bar and the bakery next to us is receiving its delivery You look around and smile at the sweet bliss that surrounds you The silky white powder falls from the sky as if heaven were baking a cake A splendid mix of love and desire fills the air A symphony of senses greets you like an old friend You think back to all the time you have spent with her You think back to the time when flour slid through your fingers as if it were too perfect to be held The ingredients clashed together with an elegancy only seen in art The passion spewed into the bowl like the whipped eggs The flower danced with the eggs while the sugar danced with the vanilla The quartet moved to the soothing sound of the whisk as it clittered and clattered against the side of the bowl You remember baking all day and making love all night You think back to the crackling fire as you sip the cheap wine You hold the glass with such care as if you are holding your own child The night creeps along like graceful aging The trees start to dance to the music of your love At that moment you didn't need to be anywhere else, you didn't want to be anywhere else You think ahead to the next few minutes The ring you bought just a few days ago burns a whole in your pocket begging to be seen As she continues walking you stop You get down on one knee and say her name softly as if it were a well kept secret Tears begin to dribble out of your eyes and you see yourself In the reflection of her teary eyes As you utter the words the perfectly imperfect flaws are blown off her face She replies with a yes so sweet it could give the cake we made diabetes With two gentle fingers you wipe the sugar off her lips Push her hair behind her ear Feel your stomach churn as if it is holding butterflies Kiss her as you watch the next 75 years of your life flash before your eyes
