I Knew You Were Trouble
Tumblr media
Ex!Evan Buckley x reader
Eddie Diaz x reader
TW: Emotional and physical cheating (from Buck), heartbroken reader, 118 supporting reader, Eddie picking up the pieces, angsty fluff.
══════ ∘◦❀◦∘ ══════
Evan Buckley. The moment his piercing blue eyes showed up at the 118, Y/N knew she was in for it. His flirty smile, the forward flirting, it was hard not to fall for it. Y/N has never been the type to fall for a guy just because he flashes a smile, but something about the way his nose crinkled whenever he grinned at her, it made her heart flutter.
Y/N L/N has always had a strong personality. She was part of the LAPD for five years before going through the Fire academy. She was the best in both of her fields. Always professional, super playful, witty, reasonable, and always down for a good time. That’s why she fit in so well with the team at the 118 when she was placed there. Hen and Chimney were the first two she met, then Captain Bobby Nash came rolling in. He clicked seamlessly with them too. And then… Buck.
On paper, he was perfect. At least in Y/N’s eyes he was. Despite his constant need to go against Bobby’s orders, she could never truly dislike the boy. Did she think he could be irrational and dumb sometimes? Absolutely. But that’s one of the things she found endearing about him.
And that’s also the reason he fell for her. Everyone on the team treated him like some idiot kid who was just a ticking time bomb. But not Y/N. She treated him like an equal, like a partner. Even when he immaturely would flirt with her on shift, tease her, blatantly but playfully check her out, she still never once genuinely got irritated with him.
So when the two of them started dating, the team wasn’t necessarily surprised. It was around that time a new recruit came into the 118. Edmundo Diaz, or as he likes to go by, Eddie. He was the missing piece the 118 needed. It felt like a full fledged family when Eddie showed up. He and Buck didn’t get along at first, but Y/N, being the effervescent force she is, managed to make them get along.
The team was amazing. Going on calls was a breeze because they all just worked so well together. Even team outings were an absolute blast because everyone got along. They are truly one big happy family.
Of course though, Eddie, Buck, and Y/N always had a deeper connection with each other than the others. Perhaps it’s because they’re so close in age, but they truly just clicked. When Eddie originally showed up to the firehouse, he wasn’t oblivious to how genuinely beautiful Y/N is. Her infectious smile and booming laugh would catch any man or woman’s attention. He would have pursued her if Buck hadn’t already won that battle.
They were always relatively professional at the job. Out of the two of them, Buck seemed to have the hardest time keeping his hands off of her. Stealing kisses here and there, smacking her behind when he thinks no one’s looking. They were happy, and anyone with eyes could see it.
At least until Taylor Kelly came into the picture.
When they got the call that her news helicopter had a mechanical failure, no one really thought anything would’ve came out of it. Y/N was pretty much in the midst of all of it, being the one to pull Taylor out of the situation while the rest of the group helped her crew and got the copter under control.
However, despite Y/N saving her life, the redheads attention was solely focused on Buck. Something that not only Y/N noticed, but the rest of the team.
It only got worse when Taylor showed up to the firehouse, claiming she would be following the 118 crew around until she felt comfortable enough to go back into the sky. Not only was Bobby annoyed, but Y/N wasn’t too thrilled to be seeing her around. Especially with the way she’s been paying special attention to her boyfriend.
Now, Y/N has never been the jealous type. She knows Buck is good looking and that other people are bound to think so too. Whenever they go out, there’s always one or two drunk individuals that try to slip him their number, but he’s never entertained any of them. After the whole Abby fiasco, his eyes have only ever been on Y/N.
That’s why she tried her hardest to ignore Taylor’s persistent behavior. She also tried to ignore how much Buck seemed to enjoy the attention. She had to remind herself of how much she loves and trusts Evan Buckley. Still, some reassurance would’ve been nice.
Anytime she’d talk to Hen and Athena about it, they’d share a look before saying that it’s just Buck’s personality. He’s a flirty guy. But that he’s never been as committed to someone as he is to her. That was always nice to hear. Even Chimney and Bobby found small ways to tell her that she has nothing to worry about.
That’s why it stung so much to walk into her apartment, one that she asked Buck to move into to get him out of Abby’s, only to find him and Taylor naked on her couch.
Her entire world crashed down around her that night. Neither of them seemed to even hear her walk in as they were still mid action and didn’t look like they were stopping anytime soon.
Y/N being as quick witted as she is, snapped a photo of their dalliance before spinning on her heel and slamming the door behind her. Anger, hurt, frustration, grief, any emotion someone could think of, she felt it that night. As soon as she got in her car, tears started flowing freely down her face. She had no idea what she was going to do with that photo. Some part of her just knew she needed proof, a reminder of what she just saw. Because she knows as soon as Buck comes crawling back to apologize, she’d forgive him in an instant.
That’s why she picked staying in her car for the night over going back there. Even though it’s her apartment, her safe space, she couldn’t bear going back. Not right now at least. Every single call he made went without an answer, all the texts, emails, all of it. She didn’t even bother to read.
Sleep didn’t come easy for the poor woman. In fact, it didn’t come at all. She simply stared out her front window, arms crossed as she buried herself deeper into her hoodie. So when the sun came out, Y/N couldn’t have been more relieved. Work was the one place where she wouldn’t have to confront this. Maintaining professionalism is of the utmost importance to her, so for the next twelve hours, she can shove all of these issues to the side.
Y/N walked into the 118 station that morning with an air of quiet fury. Her normally upbeat energy was replaced by a stiff, almost mechanical demeanor. The shift in her mood was impossible to miss. Her jaw was set, her eyes distant, and the usual lightness in her step was gone, replaced by rigid, purposeful movements. She walked past the common area without so much as a word, heading straight to the locker room to stow her gear.
The station was never completely quiet, but as Y/N entered, it felt like the atmosphere shifted, as though everyone unconsciously held their breath. Bobby was the first to notice her as she passed by his office.
“Morning, Y/N,” he greeted her, his usual warm smile in place. But Y/N, normally quick with a bright ‘Good morning,’ barely glanced his way.
“Hey, Cap,” she muttered, not slowing her pace. Her voice was flat, a stark contrast to her usual chipper tone.
Bobby frowned, watching her as she moved further into the station. He’d been a captain long enough to know when one of his firefighters was struggling with something, and Y/N’s behavior set off alarm bells in his mind. She wasn’t being rude—she was too professional for that—but her unusually short response made it clear something was off.
Y/N reached her locker, tugging it open with more force than necessary. Her hands moved quickly as she shoved her bag inside, not caring that it landed haphazardly. She was wound so tightly that every movement seemed deliberate, controlled, like she was holding back a flood of emotions threatening to escape.
Hen, who had been watching from the other side of the room, approached carefully. She knew Y/N well enough to see that something was seriously wrong. Normally, Y/N would joke about the early mornings or make some witty comment to lighten the mood, but today, she was all business.
“Hey, Y/N,” Hen said softly, leaning against the lockers beside her. “You okay?”
Y/N paused, her hands gripping the edge of her locker door for a moment before letting out a sharp exhale. “Yeah, I’m fine,” she replied curtly, closing the locker with a loud clang.
Hen didn’t buy it, and neither did the rest of the team, who were now quietly exchanging glances from across the room. Chimney, watching from the doorway, nudged Eddie.
“Something’s definitely up,” Chim whispered. “She doesn’t look like she’s slept.”
Eddie’s gaze was fixed on Y/N, his brows furrowed in concern. She was usually the first to crack a joke, the one to bring energy into the room, but today, her whole demeanor was different. She was stiff, guarded, and Eddie could see the tension in her shoulders, the way she was holding herself together with an almost frightening precision.
“Y/N,” Eddie called out softly as he approached. “You sure you’re okay?”
Y/N glanced at him briefly before looking away, her lips pressed into a thin line. She appreciated the concern, but she didn’t want to get into it—not here, not now. “I’m fine, Eddie,” she said, her voice clipped but not harsh.
Eddie didn’t push, though his eyes stayed on her, worry etched in every line of his face. He knew Y/N well enough to know that ‘fine’ wasn’t fine at all.
As Y/N moved through the rest of her morning routine, the tension around her only grew. Her movements were brisk, efficient, but there was a hardness to her that wasn’t normally there. She didn’t engage in small talk, didn’t banter with the team like usual. The shift in her behavior was like a cloud hanging over the station, and everyone could feel it.
Then Buck walked in, his entrance loud and hurried, as though he was already feeling the weight of the guilt on his shoulders. He looked disheveled, like he hadn’t slept, and his eyes immediately locked onto Y/N.
Her entire body tensed the moment he entered. She could feel his presence without even looking at him, the air between them thick with unresolved tension. She didn’t want to deal with this right now—especially not at work. But Buck, clearly desperate to make things right, approached her anyway.
“Y/N, can we talk? Please?” Buck’s voice was quiet but urgent as he moved toward her.
Y/N stiffened even more, her back straightening as she turned to face him. Her eyes were cold, and her lips pressed into a tight, thin line. “Now’s not the time or place, Evan.”
He flinches at the cold use of his first name, “Please, Y/N, I just I need to explain,” he said, his voice cracking slightly as he took another step closer.
Y/N tenses, her grip tightening around the locker door. She swallows hard, mortified that he’s bringing this up here, in front of everyone. She glances around and sees Chimney and Eddie looking at Buck with something akin to disgust. Hen’s brow is furrowed in confusion, and even Bobby has stopped pretending to read the morning paper.
Y/N hesitated, hating that he’s cornering her in the only other place she thought she’d be safe. The woman was trying so hard to stay professional, but he wasn’t making it easy. She could feel the eyes of everyone in the station on her, and the last thing she wanted was to make a scene.
“Fine,” she muttered through gritted teeth, motioning for him to follow her to a quieter corner of the station.
Once they were away from the rest of the team, Buck wasted no time. “Y/N, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”
Y/N’s eyes flashed with anger, her composure slipping just a little. “You didn’t mean for it to happen?” she repeated, her voice low and dangerous. “You’re telling me you just accidentally ended up screwing Taylor on my couch?”
Buck winced at her words, his guilt written all over his face. “I—I wasn’t thinking. I was confused.”
“Confused?” Y/N’s voice was sharper now, her anger bubbling to the surface. “That’s your excuse? You didn’t know what you were doing?”
“I was in a bad headspace, Y/N. It just—” Buck struggled for words, clearly not understanding how badly he was making things. “It didn’t mean anything. You and me, we’re the real thing. That with Taylor… it was just a mistake.”
Y/N’s eyes widened, disbelief and fury warring in her chest. “A mistake?” she echoed, her voice trembling with the effort of holding back her rage. “No,” she scoffs. “No. No, a mistake is when you lose your keys. What you did was make a blatant choice without thinking of the consequences.”
Buck’s face flushed, and he shifted uncomfortably under her gaze. “I didn’t mean for it to happen like this. Please, I can’t lose you.”
“You should’ve thought about that before you cheated on me!” Y/N snapped, her voice rising. The anger she had been holding back all morning finally erupted, spilling out into the open. Her words echoed through the station, drawing the attention of everyone around them.
Buck’s face paled as he realized the entire team had heard her outburst. He looked around, embarrassment flooding him, but Y/N didn’t care. She was too angry, too hurt to worry about how this looked.
“Y/N—”
“No, Buck!” she yelled, her hands trembling as she tried to hold back the tears threatening to spill over. “You don’t get to do this! You don’t get to stand here and pretend like it didn’t mean anything. You cheated on me. You lied to me. And now you want me to just… what? Forgive you because it didn’t ‘mean anything’?” She shakes her head, failing at stopping herself from making the situation worse. “You try to act like you’ve changed, but you’re still the same freakin’ playboy who had sex with every girl who paid him the slightest bit of attention.”
The station was dead silent. The rest of the team, though trying not to stare, couldn’t help but listen to every word.
Buck’s mouth opened and closed as he struggled for a response, but nothing came out. The weight of Y/N’s words seemed to hit him all at once, and the guilt that had been simmering beneath the surface came crashing down on him.
Before Buck could say anything else, Y/N shook her head, her voice breaking. “I can’t do this anymore. I– I just– I can’t. We’re done.”
And with that, she turned on her heel and walked away, her heart pounding, her face flushed with a mix of anger and embarrassment.
The silence in the station hung heavy until Hen was the first to break it, her voice firm. “What the hell, Buck?”
Chimney sighed, his disappointment evident. “You messed up, man. You don’t do that to someone like Y/N.”
Bobby, usually the voice of reason, stepped in, his tone stern. “You need to figure out how you’re going to make this right. But more importantly, you need to take responsibility for your actions, Buck. This wasn’t just a mistake. It’s a breach of trust. We don’t do things like that to each other.”
Buck looked around, his face pale as he realized just how badly he had screwed up. But it was Eddie who delivered the harshest blow. He stepped forward, his eyes blazing with barely concealed anger.
“You had something good, Buck,” Eddie said, his voice low but full of emotion. “And you threw it away. She deserved better than that. Better than you.”
Buck’s face fell, the weight of Eddie’s words hitting him like a punch to the gut. Eddie never spoke like that—especially not to his friends—but this was different. This was Y/N. And Eddie wasn’t just mad—he was furious.
As Buck stood there, looking like the ground had been ripped out from under him, Eddie turned on his heel and followed Y/N outside. He found her pacing near one of the firetrucks, her hands shaking as she tried to calm herself down.
“Y/N,” Eddie called out softly.
She paused, glancing up at him, her eyes red and glassy. “I’m fine,” she muttered, though it was clear she wasn’t. She won’t let any actual tears fall. Not here. Not at work. She can’t lose it.
Eddie sighs before taking a gentle step forward. He stops her pacing by grabbing her hands as delicately as possible. He can feel the furious energy buzzing through her skin. It’s a rage similar to his own. As he looks into her gorgeous (e/c) eyes, his anger morphs into pain. His heart aches at how broken she looks. She trusted Buck with every fiber of her being and he took it for granted. He took her for granted. How could he throw away such a beautiful soul?
“No, mariposa, you’re not,” he shakes his head. His deep chocolate gaze makes her shoulders slump. Her tense posture falls, knowing that there’s no point in lying to him. For whatever reason, Eddie has always been able to read her like an open book. She couldn’t keep secrets with him. He knew them before she even knew herself. “Everything that happened in there… that’s not fine. So please, don’t pretend with me.”
Y/N finally forced herself to open up. She exhales shakily, blowing a big puff of air out as she laughs brokenly. A small sniffle escapes her, “It just… hurts, y’know? I mean, I kinda picked up on something weird with them, but I thought I was just being paranoid,” she looks back down at her boot-clad feet. “I try not to be jealous, I feel like it makes me look crazy. But… I guess I should’ve trusted my gut.” She sends a halfhearted glare over at Buck who’s still standing in the middle of the fire station, trying to avoid everyone’s wrath. “I’m such an idiot.”
“Hey,” Eddie stops her, a serious look on his face. He moves one hand to cup her chin, forcing her to look back at him. “You are not the idiot in this situation. He is,” he nods in Buck’s direction. “He didn’t see the amazing woman he had right in front of him. He’s the biggest damn idiot in the world for losing you.”
Y/N feels like she can let her walls crumble around Eddie. There’s something about the way his strong presence grounds her, silently reassuring her that he’s there, that he’s supporting her. She relaxes into his soft touch, “I just… I don’t know what I’m gonna do now. I mean, he lives with me.”
Eddie hesitates for a moment before pulling her fully into him, wrapping his arms around her as she rests her head on his chest. “Well, the best answer I can give you is that you continue being you. And trust me, there’s someone out there who’s going to see how incredible you are and never take it for granted. Someone who would treat you like the gem you are.” He pauses before planting a soft kiss on her forehead, “And if you want, you can always stay with Chris and I until he gets all of his stuff cleared out.”
Y/N looks up at him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I think I might take you up on that.” She swallows, trying to keep herself together. “But… what if I don’t want to go through all of that again? Maybe I’m not meant to find anyone else. What if I’m just…done with relationships?”
Eddie’s expression softened even further. He knew how hard this was for her, and part of him hated seeing her in so much pain, especially because of someone like Buck. But he also knew she was stronger than she gave herself credit for. “You’re not done, Y/N. You’re just hurt right now. But you’ll heal, and when you’re ready, you’ll move on. And when that happens, you’ll find someone who’s going to love you the way you deserve to be loved.”
Y/N searched his face for a moment, her breath catching in her throat. There was something in the way Eddie was looking at her—something she hadn’t noticed before. A tenderness, an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.
She blinked, trying to shake off the feeling. Now wasn’t the time. “Thanks, Eddie,” she whispered, her voice shaky but sincere.
He gave her a small smile, his hand lingering near hers for just a moment longer before he stepped back. “Anytime.”
They stood in silence for a few moments, the air between them charged with something unspoken. Eddie wanted to tell her that he was there for her in more ways than just friendship, but he knew this wasn’t the right moment. Y/N had just been through hell, and she needed space to heal.
But he also knew that if she ever needed him—really needed him—he’d be there without hesitation.
Before Y/N could respond, the station doors opened, and Hen walked out, giving them both a look. “Everything alright out here?”
Y/N straightened up, wiping her face quickly and nodding. “Yeah, I’m good.”
Hen gave her a knowing look but didn’t push. “Alright. We’re heading out for a call in a few minutes, so just wanted to make sure you were ready.”
Y/N took a deep breath, mentally preparing herself for the day ahead. “I’m ready,” she said, her voice more steady now.
Hen nodded and headed back inside, leaving Y/N and Eddie standing there in the quiet. Eddie looked at her one last time, his eyes filled with a silent promise. “You’ve got this.”
Y/N nodded, forcing a small smile. “Yeah. I’ve got this.”
As they walked back inside together, the weight of the day ahead still heavy on Y/N’s shoulders, she knew that it was going to take time to fully heal. But with Eddie by her side and the support of the rest of her team, she knew she wasn’t facing it alone.
And as for Buck? She wasn’t sure what the future held, but one thing was clear: she deserved better than what he had given her. And one day, she’d find it. But for now, she’d focus on what she did best—being a damn good firefighter and an even better person.
══════ ∘◦❀◦∘ ══════
Working a twelve hour shift on absolutely no sleep had to have been the worst decision Y/N could have made. It’s not that she isn’t capable of doing her job, it’s just her emotions were already on overdrive after seeing Buck, but now that exhaustion is kicking in, it’s not good for anyone.
She pulls the hair tie out of her hair as she grabs the remaining items from her locker. Her eyes travel over to Eddie who is already waiting by the entrance of the firehouse for her. He sends her a small smile and she returns it, a small flutter in her chest catching her off guard. Y/N internally scolds herself for staring too long. She’s always found Eddie attractive, but she just got out of a relationship with Buck. Now is not the time to be casting ogling glances to Eddie.
She slings her bag over her shoulder before heading out of the locker room. Thankfully, she has enough clothes in her bag for the next few days to bring to Eddie’s so she doesn’t have to go back home. She bids a proper goodbye to everyone, narrowly avoiding Buck who just walked out of the showers. He looks like a wounded puppy when he watches Y/N walk away.
He walks away dejectedly, trying to avoid the angry stares from the rest of the team. Y/N feels a certain level of safety as she continues growing closer to the Diaz man. To her dismay though, someone felt the need to disrupt her journey.
Taylor.
“Y/N, can I speak with you for a moment?” She asks, tilting her head in a way that makes Y/N clench her jaw.
“I don’t really think that’s a good idea,” Y/N replies smoothly.
Taylor persists, “I’m just asking for a second of your time.”
“To interview me professionally or to try and explain why you were butt ass naked on my couch?” Y/N raises a confrontational eyebrow, yet her tone remains collected. Taylor purses her lips, trying to fight off her own embarrassment as more people in the firehouse look over to them. Eddie takes a few steps closer, getting ready to intervene if needed.
“Look, you have every right to be angry–”
“Oh, I know,” Y/N nods, crossing her arms. “I don’t need your permission or you to tell me I have the right to do anything.”
Taylor sucks in a deep breath, clearly getting impatient. “I just think that maybe you’re being too hard on Buck. He really was in a rough place. I think you owe it to him to hear him out.”
“Really?” Y/N lets out a humorless laugh. “I owe him? Oh sweetheart, I don’t owe anyone anything,” she shakes her head, taking a step forward with a condescending smile. “He made his bed, or in this case, the couch, so now he can lay in it,” she shrugs nonchalantly. Y/N looks Taylor up and down before scoffing, “You two deserve each other…” she grumbles before shoulder checking the journalist and finishing her journey over to Eddie.
He watches her with an impressed look on his face, “How’d that feel?” He asks with a small grin.
“So good,” Y/N breathes out with a victorious sighs. “If I could’ve punched her without getting fired, I would have.”
Eddie chuckles, wrapping his arm around her shoulder as he walks her out of the firehouse. “You’re too professional for that.”
“Yeah… I suppose,” Y/N leans into his side.
“Hey, why don’t you ride home with me?” Eddie suggests. “Since you’re staying at my place, we could just carpool in the morning.”
“I can’t just leave my car here,” Y/N says logically.
“You can get it tomorrow,” he brushes off, guiding her over to his vehicle. “C’mon… it’ll be fun. I’ll let you play Hamilton on the way,” he grins, knowing that’ll get her to say yes.
Y/N sighs reluctantly but ultimately ends up hightailing it towards Eddie’s car. It makes her flush at the thought that he pays that much attention to her and the things she likes. She loves musicals and everything related to theatre. It’s a guilty pleasure she’s had since middle school.
The moment they walked into Eddie's house, Christopher came sprinting toward them, his excitement contagious.
“Y/N!” he called, throwing his arms around her waist. “Are you staying over?”
“For a little while,” Y/N said, ruffling his hair. “Think you can put up with me?”
Christopher grinned. “Only if we make cookies.”
Y/N looked at Eddie, raising a brow. “That okay with you, Chef Diaz?”
Eddie smirked, leaning casually against the doorframe. “I guess I can allow it. But don’t think you’re getting out of clean-up duty.”
Christopher grabbed Y/N’s hand, dragging her toward the kitchen. “C’mon! I already know where the chocolate chips are!”
Eddie followed, shaking his head with amusement as he grabbed an apron. “You’ve got him wrapped around your finger,” he teased.
“Oh, please. He’s the boss around here,” Y/N shot back, tying her own apron and bumping Eddie lightly with her hip.
As they worked, the kitchen buzzed with laughter and lighthearted banter. Y/N and Eddie stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the counter while Christopher focused on cracking eggs without shell casualties. Y/N nudged Eddie when she caught him sneaking a handful of chocolate chips.
“You’re supposed to bake with those,” she said, trying to snatch the bag away.
“You’re the one who ate half the dough at the station,” Eddie countered, leaning closer with a playful smirk. “Hypocrite much?”
“Someone had to test it for poison,” she shot back, their faces just inches apart. She realized too late how close they were, her breath catching at the warmth in his eyes.
Eddie cleared his throat, stepping back as he tossed the chips into the mixing bowl. “Poison control. Got it,” he said, his voice quieter now.
Christopher’s cheerful commentary broke the moment, and Y/N refocused, though her heart raced.
Later, as the cookies baked, the three of them sprawled on the couch with mugs of milk and plates of their handiwork. They watched Moana, singing along at Christopher’s insistence, and Y/N felt herself sink into the comfort of it all—a fleeting glimpse of a life she hadn’t realized she wanted.
By the time Christopher went to bed, yawning through his goodnight hug, Y/N felt exhaustion settle over her. Eddie walked back into the living room with a blanket slung over his shoulder.
“You take my bed,” he offered, his tone leaving no room for argument. “I’ll take the couch.”
“Eddie,” Y/N protested, “don’t be ridiculous. I can sleep out here.”
“I wasn’t asking,” he said with a crooked grin, tossing the blanket onto the couch.
She hesitated, looking up at him. “I mean… we could just share. Your bed’s big enough, right?”
Eddie froze for a beat, his brows lifting. “You’re serious?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Y/N shrugged, trying to sound casual, though her cheeks burned.
He exhaled and nodded. “Alright, but if you snore, I’m kicking you out.”
Later, lying side by side in the quiet of Eddie’s room, Y/N broke the silence. “I thought Buck was the one,” she admits quietly, her eyes falling as she thinks about everything that’s transpired in the past twenty-four hours. “And, y’know, maybe he was… for a while.” She turned her head, meeting Eddie’s steady gaze in the dim light. “But I’d be lying Eddie if I said I never thought about you,” her voices comes out in a whisper, almost like she’s scared of how he’ll react.
Eddie didn’t answer right away, his expression softening. Then, before she could second-guess herself, he leaned in, pressing his lips to hers. The kiss was slow, deliberate, and unguarded, carrying loads of unspoken feelings. When his hand slid to her waist and she deepened the kiss, Eddie pulled back suddenly, resting his forehead against hers.
“Y/N,” he murmured, his voice rough. “I can’t… I don’t want to take advantage of you. Not after everything with Buck.”
She nodded, her chest tightening with a mix of disappointment and admiration. “You’re a good man, Eddie.”
He smiled faintly. “I’m trying to be.” A small chuckle leaves his lips, “Believe me, it’s not easy. Not with you here, like this,” he gestures to the closeness between them. “I’ve thought about this more than I’d like to admit. Probably an embarrassing amount of times. And while I would love to continue what just happened, I can’t do that to you. Not when your heart just got broken.”
Y/N reaches over to cup his cheek, “Then maybe you can help me figure out how to fix it.”
══════ ∘◦❀◦∘ ══════
Over the next few weeks, their connection only grew stronger.
At the station, Eddie would appear beside her with coffee, their hands brushing in ways that felt intentional. Y/N’s laugh came more easily around him, and the team couldn’t help but notice. Hen caught Eddie sneaking glances more than once, and Chimney started placing bets with Bobby about when Eddie would make his move.
At Eddie’s house, Christopher treated Y/N like part of the family. She helped him with homework, played board games, and joined them for Sunday dinners. Eddie would lean against the doorway, watching them, his heart full.
Things finally felt good for Y/N. Like every single piece of her life fit perfectly. She was getting over Buck while still getting along well with the team. She’s been spending a lot of amazing time with Eddie and Chris. She absolutely loves the little boy. It’s like being apart of them and their routine was that little spark she was missing before.
One evening, after dropping Christopher off at a friend’s house, Eddie finally asked her out. “Y/N,” he began, his voice tinged with nervousness. “What would you say if I wanted to take you out for real? Like a date.”
Y/N smiled, her heart soaring. “I’d say it’s about time.”
Their first date was simple: dinner at a small Mexican restaurant Eddie loved, followed by a walk under the stars. They talked for hours, and when Eddie kissed her goodnight, it was everything she’d been waiting for.
Back at the station, their relationship became the team’s favorite topic. Hen teased them mercilessly, and even Chim couldn’t resist joining in. Buck, though initially uncomfortable, eventually came around, admitting that Eddie made Y/N happy in a way he hadn’t.
For the first time in a long time, Y/N felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be—with Eddie, with Christopher, with a future that finally felt whole.

i've said it before and i'll say it again taylor kelly wasn't Wrong for putting out the story about jonah greenway, even bobby said the brass was angry because now they look bad and they wanted to control how the story got out but imo it's always correct to let people know when there's shit going on in organisations you're supposed to trust! her only mistake was when you say "off the record" it's supposed to mean something so it's not only buck whose trust she betrayed but chimney and hen too.

None Of This Is Your Fault.
Brian "Otis" Zvonecek x Fem!Firefighter!Reader
A/N: Sorry that I've been so inactive, I know this is no excuse but I school started and my job is starting to get into it's busy season and to my luck I managed to tear my meniscus and I've been in so much pain so writing has been the least of my concerns. I am getting surgery on Thursday so I will be writing more soon. For now, please enjoy my new fic.
This is a 20 chapter story and I've put 10 chapters in one fic. It's a lot but this is my apology for being inactive.
Tumblr media
Chapter 1:
Five years. That’s how long I’ve been with Brian. It feels like a lifetime and just a blink at the same time. We met in the most unconventional of ways—running into each other during a late-night call, both of us soaked in sweat, soot smeared across our faces, the smell of smoke thick in the air. It wasn’t the most romantic setting, but maybe that’s why it worked. There was no need for pretenses between us. We were both drawn to the fire, the adrenaline, the chaotic beauty of our work. And somehow, through the chaos, I found him.
Brian “Otis” Zvonecek—my partner in every sense of the word. He’s not the guy who sweeps you off your feet with grand gestures or sweet talk. No, Brian is the guy who shows up every single day. He’s steady. Kind. Funny in the way that only he can be, with those ridiculous puns and the way his face lights up when he thinks he’s landed a good one. It’s impossible not to laugh when he’s around, and God, that’s what I love most about him—he makes everything lighter, even when the world feels heavy.
But these days, the world is feeling a little heavier than usual.
We’ve both been working nonstop—Firehouse 51 is like a second home, though lately, it feels more like a first. There’s something comforting about the firehouse, the constant hum of activity, the sound of the trucks rumbling to life, the distant chatter of my crew—no, my family. And Brian? He’s always been at the center of it all. Our relationship bloomed in this place, surrounded by the people who understand what we go through every day.
I remember the early days with him so clearly. It started as a few casual glances across the engine bay, nothing serious at first. Just an awareness of him. His laugh was what caught me. The way he threw his head back, completely unguarded, while the rest of us were tense and wired after a tough call. He had this way of letting it all roll off his back, and I admired that.
It wasn’t long before we were partnered on every shift, making excuses to grab dinner after. One night, after a particularly tough rescue, he suggested we go for wings. I was exhausted, drained, and covered in soot, but something in his voice made me agree. I needed that—something normal, something grounding. We sat in that little corner booth, devouring spicy wings, laughing about the ridiculousness of our lives. It was simple, but it was the first time I felt like I had found something real. Something worth holding onto.
That’s how we’ve always been—just us, grounded in the simplicity of being together. No grand romantic gestures, no pressure to be anything other than who we are.
And for five years, it worked. I always felt secure with Brian. Sure, we’ve had our share of arguments—what couple doesn’t?—but they were always small, petty things. We’d bicker about who forgot to fill the gas tank or who left the towels on the floor, but those disagreements never lasted long. We were always able to laugh it off, make a joke, and move forward.
Lately, though, I’ve been different. Not us—me. I feel it deep inside, like there’s something pulling me away, pulling us apart. I don’t know why, but these past few months, things that shouldn’t bother me do. Things that used to make me laugh now irritate me. And sometimes, when the irritation boils over, I lose control in a way I never have before.
Brian doesn’t say it, but I can tell he’s worried. He’s always watching me now, his brown eyes searching for some sign that I’m still the same Y/N he fell in love with. But the truth is, I don’t feel like the same person anymore, and that scares me more than I care to admit. The outbursts come out of nowhere—sudden, violent flashes of anger—and then, just as quickly, they’re gone, like they never happened. And the worst part? I can’t remember them.
It’s terrifying.
It started small. A broken plate here, a slammed door there. I chalked it up to stress. Firefighting is a tough job, and we’re no strangers to pressure. But as the weeks turned into months, the episodes became harder to ignore. They were no longer just occasional moments of frustration—they were frequent, and sometimes, I wouldn’t even realize something was wrong until I saw the look in Brian’s eyes. That look of concern, like he didn’t know how to help me, like he was afraid to say the wrong thing. I hated that look. It made me feel like I was losing him, losing us.
But I kept telling myself it was fine. I was fine. If I just pushed through, if I worked harder, the episodes would stop. I thought if I ignored it, I could outrun it.
I was wrong.
Tonight, as I lie in bed next to Brian, listening to his soft breathing, I can’t shake the feeling that something big is coming. Something we won’t be able to ignore. I stare at the ceiling, the weight of it pressing down on me, my chest tightening. The love I have for him is overwhelming, and I don’t know how to protect it anymore.
Brian stirs beside me, his arm draping across my waist as he pulls me closer in his sleep. I close my eyes, taking in the warmth of his body, the familiar scent of him. He feels like home. But the fear of losing that—of losing him—is more than I can bear.
Tomorrow is another shift. Another 48-hour stretch. I tell myself things will get better, that I just need to push through. But deep down, I know something has to give.
And I’m terrified that when it does, it’ll be too late to save what we’ve built.
Chapter 2:
The first time it happened, I barely noticed it. Looking back, that should have been my first clue. It was such a small thing—a flash of frustration that I thought was just stress from work. We were off-duty, Brian and I, sitting at the kitchen table after a long day. We’d been talking about the usual—our shifts, the next firehouse event, Cruz’s latest terrible joke. Brian had a way of making everything feel easy. Comfortable.
But that night, something was different.
I don’t even remember what set me off. One minute, we were laughing, and the next, I felt this surge of anger bubbling up inside me. It wasn’t anything Brian said or did, not really. It was more like a wave crashing over me, completely out of my control. I felt like I was drowning in it, and the next thing I knew, I was standing over the kitchen sink, my hands trembling as I stared at the shattered remains of a glass I didn’t even remember throwing.
Brian was standing a few feet away, his face pale, his eyes wide with shock.
“Y/N… what just happened?” His voice was quiet, careful.
I blinked, trying to piece together the moment, but it was like a fog had settled over my mind. “I—I don’t know.” My voice sounded distant, unfamiliar. “I didn’t mean to—”
“It’s okay,” he said quickly, stepping forward. He placed his hand gently on my arm, his touch grounding me. “It’s okay. It was just a glass.”
But it wasn’t just the glass, and we both knew it. Something had shifted inside me, something dark and uncontrollable. And the worst part was, I couldn’t explain it. I couldn’t tell Brian what was wrong because I didn’t know.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my throat tight. “I don’t know what happened.”
Brian smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “It’s fine. We’re both tired. It was just a glass.”
I nodded, but as I swept up the broken shards, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something had broken inside me, too. And it wasn’t going to be as easy to put back together.
Chapter 3:
Weeks passed, and the tension in the air between Brian and me seemed to grow with each passing day. It wasn’t just at home anymore—my outbursts were starting to creep into our shifts at the firehouse. It wasn’t anything major at first, just little moments where I’d snap at someone or lose my temper more easily than usual. Everyone chalked it up to the stress of the job, and I let them. It was easier than admitting something was wrong.
But inside, I could feel it building—this pressure, like a balloon swelling inside my chest, ready to burst. I thought I could handle it. I thought if I kept myself busy, if I focused on the work, I could push it down. But firefighting isn’t a job where you can afford to lose control.
I remember one call in particular. It was a standard house fire, nothing we hadn’t seen a thousand times before. The flames were manageable, but there was a lot of smoke. We went in as a team, each of us with a role, moving in sync like we always did. Brian was with me, like he usually was, our movements so familiar we didn’t even need to talk to communicate.
But something was off that day. The smoke felt heavier than usual, the heat more oppressive. My helmet felt like it was pressing down on my skull, making my head throb. I tried to push through it, focusing on the task at hand, but my mind was racing. Every sound—the crackle of flames, the muffled voices over the radio, even my own breathing in the mask—felt like it was closing in on me.
“Y/N, you good?” Brian’s voice crackled through my radio.
“I’m fine,” I muttered, though my vision was starting to blur at the edges. We were almost done, just a few more minutes. I could make it. I had to.
But then, out of nowhere, the frustration hit me. I don’t know why—it wasn’t a particularly stressful call—but something inside me snapped. I felt a surge of anger, irrational and uncontrollable. I swung my axe harder than I needed to, cutting through debris with more force than was necessary. I heard Brian call my name again, concern clear in his voice, but I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. I was too focused on the pounding in my head, the rage bubbling just beneath the surface.
When we finally exited the building, I ripped off my helmet and tossed it to the ground, breathing heavily. My heart was racing, my hands trembling.
“What the hell, Y/N?” Brian was at my side, his voice sharp. “You could’ve hurt yourself in there.”
“I’m fine,” I snapped, my voice harsher than I intended. “It’s nothing.”
“It’s not nothing,” he said, his brow furrowing as he looked at me. “You’ve been off lately. This isn’t like you.”
I turned away, not wanting to hear the concern in his voice. I didn’t want to admit that he was right—that something was wrong with me. “I told you, I’m fine.”
But I wasn’t. I knew it, and Brian knew it, too.
Chapter 4:
The firehouse had always been a place of comfort for me. It was where I felt in control, where I knew I could make a difference. But lately, even that had started to feel like a burden. My outbursts were becoming more frequent, and I could see the strain it was putting on everyone—especially Brian.
At home, things were getting harder. Brian tried to be patient, but I could see the frustration in his eyes whenever I lost my temper. He’d always been the calm one, the one who could smooth things over with a joke or a smile. But even he couldn’t keep pretending that everything was fine.
We had one of our worst fights a few nights after that call. I don’t even remember what started it—something small, something stupid. But it spiraled out of control so fast. One minute, we were sitting on the couch, watching a movie, and the next, I was yelling at him, accusing him of things that didn’t even make sense.
“You don’t even care about me anymore!” I shouted, the words spilling out of my mouth before I could stop them. “You’re always at work, or with Cruz, or doing anything but being here with me!”
Brian looked at me like I’d just slapped him. “Y/N, what are you talking about? I’m always with you! We work together, we live together—how much closer can we get?”
“That’s not what I mean!” I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes, but I didn’t care. “You’re here, but you’re not really here. You don’t look at me the same way anymore. You don’t—”
“Stop,” he cut me off, his voice calm but firm. “That’s not true, and you know it. I love you. I’ve always loved you.”
His words should have soothed me. They should have made me feel safe. But instead, they only made the anger flare hotter. “Then why do I feel so alone?” I whispered, my voice breaking.
Brian’s face softened, and he took a step closer, reaching for my hand. “Y/N, I’m right here. You’re not alone. But something’s going on with you, and you won’t talk to me about it.”
I yanked my hand away, refusing to meet his eyes. “I’m fine,” I muttered for what felt like the hundredth time.
But I wasn’t. I wasn’t fine, and I was pushing him away without even meaning to. I could see it in his eyes—the worry, the frustration, the helplessness. He didn’t know how to fix this, and neither did I.
That night, we went to bed without saying another word. Brian turned his back to me, and I lay there, staring at the ceiling, feeling the weight of my own silence pressing down on me. I wanted to reach out to him, to tell him I was scared, that I didn’t know what was happening to me. But the words wouldn’t come.
All I could do was lie there and wonder how much longer we could keep pretending that everything was okay.
Chapter 5:
The firehouse was unusually quiet that night. It was the kind of quiet that crept into your bones, making you restless. We were on the second day of a 48-hour shift, and exhaustion hung in the air. Normally, a shift like this didn’t faze me—adrenaline and routine kept me going. But tonight, my head felt like it was being squeezed in a vice. The migraine was pounding behind my eyes, a dull, throbbing pain that no amount of coffee could fix.
I rubbed my temples, trying to will the headache away. Brian had noticed it earlier in the shift and offered me some Tylenol, but I turned him down. There was something about this headache that felt different, heavier. And I was already on edge—there was no way I wanted to dull my senses while on duty.
I kept my distance from the crew tonight, choosing to sit quietly at the kitchen table, nursing my coffee and staring blankly at the TV. Normally, I’d be laughing with the rest of them, especially Brian and Cruz, who were busy trading ridiculous jokes and stories. But I couldn’t focus on any of it. The migraine had lodged itself deep in my skull, making every sound feel like nails on a chalkboard.
I was counting down the hours. Only eight more hours of this shift. And then, finally, Brian and I could go home, grab food from the new Wingstop, and just unwind. It had been a long week, and I was craving something normal, something that would remind me of the simplicity of us. I clung to the thought of getting those wings together. It was the one thing keeping me grounded, the one thing I was looking forward to after the chaos of the last two days.
As if on cue, Brian wandered over to me, his smile easy as always, though I could see the concern lingering in his eyes.
“Hey,” he said softly, sitting down across from me. “How’s your head?”
I forced a small smile, though I knew it didn’t reach my eyes. “Still there, but it’ll pass. Just need to get through these last few hours.”
“We’re almost done,” Brian said, his hand reaching out to gently brush mine. “And then it’s Wingstop time, right? I’m starving.”
I nodded, feeling a small flicker of relief. “Yeah, can’t wait. Been thinking about it all day.”
Brian paused, his brow furrowing slightly. “Actually… about that. I just grabbed Wingstop with Cruz an hour ago. Didn’t realize you’d still want it tonight. You cool with grabbing something else?”
The words barely registered at first. They came out so casually, so matter-of-fact. But as they sank in, I felt a sharp, searing heat rise in my chest. My fingers tightened around the coffee mug in my hand as the rage swelled, unbidden and uncontrollable. I blinked, my vision blurring for a moment as my heart pounded in my ears.
“Wait, what?” I could hear the edge in my voice, sharp and venomous, even as I tried to keep it together. “You just had Wingstop? You knew we were supposed to get it together after shift.”
Brian’s eyes widened, taken aback by the sudden shift in my tone. “I didn’t think it’d be a big deal. We can still get it if you want. I’ll eat it with you, no problem.”
“No,” I snapped, the word flying out before I could stop it. “I don’t want it anymore.”
Brian frowned, confusion and concern mingling on his face. “Y/N, what’s going on? It’s just food. If you want Wingstop, we’ll get Wingstop. It’s not a big deal.”
But to me, it was a big deal. It felt like everything—the headache, the exhaustion, the tension between us—was boiling over, and this one tiny thing had pushed me over the edge. I could feel it happening, the anger building into something unstoppable, and I hated it. I hated that I couldn’t control it, couldn’t stop the words from tumbling out.
“You always do this!” I shouted, my voice breaking as the room seemed to close in around me. “You say one thing and then turn around and do whatever you want! Do you even care about what I want anymore? All I wanted was this shift to end so we could finally go home and have a normal night together. But no—of course you couldn’t even wait for me to get the food we talked about!”
“Y/N,” Brian said softly, reaching out to touch my arm, “I didn’t mean—”
“DON’T TOUCH ME!” I jerked away from him, my heart racing as the room fell silent. Everyone was staring now—Cruz, Mouch, Sylvie, Herrmann. Even Chief Boden, who had been standing by the door, was watching with furrowed brows.
I could feel my hands shaking, my vision blurring as tears welled up in my eyes. “All I wanted,” I choked out, my voice trembling, “was a little quality time with my boyfriend. But instead, I get stuck on this miserable shift with a migraine and a boyfriend who only cares about himself.”
The words hung in the air like poison, and as soon as they left my mouth, I felt something inside me shatter. My heart was pounding, my breath coming in ragged gasps, and before I knew it, tears were streaming down my face. I didn’t even recognize myself in that moment. This wasn’t me.
Brian stood there, frozen, his face pale with shock and hurt. “Y/N, I…”
But before he could say anything else, it was like a switch had flipped. The anger drained out of me as quickly as it had come, leaving me feeling hollow and confused. I blinked, wiping my tear-streaked face as I straightened my posture, suddenly aware of the silence in the room.
“Why… why am I crying?” I asked, my voice soft, bewildered. I looked around at everyone’s faces—confusion, concern, shock—all eyes on me. The pressure in my head eased slightly, the migraine fading as quickly as it had come.
Without another word, I turned and walked to the bathroom, the weight of everyone’s stares pressing down on me like a heavy fog.
Chapter 6:
I spent a long time in the bathroom, splashing cold water on my face and staring at my reflection in the mirror. My face was flushed, my eyes red from crying, but it wasn’t the physical exhaustion that scared me. It was the blank space in my mind, the way the anger had flared so hot and fast, only to disappear without a trace. I didn’t remember half of what I’d said, and what I did remember felt like it had come from someone else’s mouth, not mine.
I leaned against the sink, gripping the edge of the counter so hard my knuckles turned white. I didn’t know what was happening to me, but it was getting worse. And I was terrified.
When I finally stepped out of the bathroom, I saw Brian waiting for me by the door. His face was etched with worry, but his voice was calm and steady when he spoke. “Chief wants to see us in his office.”
My stomach dropped. I nodded silently and followed him down the hall, my footsteps heavy, my heart pounding in my chest. Chief Boden rarely called anyone into his office unless it was serious. And this? This was definitely serious.
When we stepped into the office, Chief was sitting behind his desk, his expression unreadable. He gestured for us to sit, and the tension in the room was thick as we did. Brian sat next to me, close but not touching, his hands resting tensely in his lap.
“Y/N,” Chief Boden began, his deep voice gentle but firm. “Brian explained what’s been going on with you lately. I need you to listen carefully to what I’m about to say.”
I nodded, my throat tight.
“I’ve seen my share of stress in this job. I’ve seen how it can affect people—physically, mentally, emotionally. But what happened out there today wasn’t normal, and it wasn’t safe. For you or for anyone else. You’ve been one of the best firefighters on this team, but I can’t have you putting yourself or others at risk.”
I swallowed hard, the weight of his words settling over me like a cold blanket.
“I’m not asking,” Chief continued, his eyes locking onto mine. “I’m ordering you to go to Chicago Med. You’re not coming back on shift until the doctors clear you.”
His words hit me like a punch to the gut. “Chief, I—”
“This isn’t up for discussion,” he said, his voice softening but still firm. “You need to get checked out. Something’s going on, and you can’t ignore it anymore.”
I felt Brian’s hand brush against mine, a silent show of support, but I couldn’t look at him. I couldn’t face the disappointment in his eyes. All I could do was nod again, feeling a wave of helplessness crash over me.
“Take the rest of the day,” Chief said. “Go to Med. We’ll be here for whatever you need, but you’re not coming back until you get answers.”
Brian stood up, helping me to my feet as we left the office in silence. I could barely process what had just happened—how quickly everything had spiraled out of control. As we walked out of the firehouse and towards the car
Chapter 7:
The ride to Chicago Med was eerily quiet. Brian drove, his hands gripping the steering wheel a little too tight, his gaze focused on the road. I sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window, my mind a blur of confusion, guilt, and fear. Every bump in the road sent a fresh wave of pain through my skull, but it wasn’t just the migraine anymore—it was the uncertainty gnawing at my insides. Something was wrong with me. Deep down, I knew that now. But the thought of facing it, of having a doctor tell me what was happening… I wasn’t sure I was ready for that.
Brian didn’t say much during the drive, and I was grateful for that. I wasn’t sure what I would have said if he’d asked me how I was feeling. How was I supposed to explain the emptiness inside me, the way I felt like a stranger in my own body?
As we pulled into the parking lot of Chicago Med, Brian finally spoke, his voice soft but steady. “I’m coming in with you.”
I nodded, unable to find the words to argue. I didn’t want to do this alone. I didn’t want to walk into that hospital and face whatever it was that had been slowly unraveling me. And as much as I hated feeling vulnerable, I needed him with me.
The bright lights of the hospital stung my eyes as we walked through the automatic doors, the sterile smell of antiseptic hitting me like a wall. Brian led the way, his hand resting on the small of my back, guiding me through the bustling halls. We didn’t have to wait long before we were ushered into an exam room by a nurse, who took my vitals and asked the standard questions.
Then, there was more waiting.
I sat on the exam table, swinging my legs back and forth, my hands folded tightly in my lap. Brian stood next to me, close enough that our arms brushed every now and then, but he didn’t speak. He didn’t need to. His presence was enough—steady, calming, even though I knew he was as scared as I was.
After what felt like an eternity, the door swung open, and Dr. Will Halstead walked in. I knew him well—he’d treated me a few times before, and he was a friend of ours outside of work. But today, he didn’t greet me with the usual smile or lighthearted joke. His expression was serious, concerned.
“Hey, Y/N,” he said, glancing between me and Brian as he took a seat on the stool across from us. “I hear you’ve been having some… unusual symptoms.”
I nodded, my throat tight. “Yeah. I guess you could say that.”
Will frowned, his brow furrowing as he flipped through my chart. “Brian filled me in on what’s been going on. The headaches, the mood swings, the memory loss… we’re going to run a few tests to get a clearer picture. I know it’s scary, but we need to figure out what’s causing all of this.”
I swallowed hard, my heart pounding in my chest. “Do you have any idea what it could be?”
Will hesitated, and that hesitation sent a chill down my spine. “There are a few possibilities,” he said carefully, “but I don’t want to jump to conclusions until we have more information. We’re going to start with a CT scan to get a look at what’s going on inside your brain.”
Inside my brain.
The words echoed in my head, sending a fresh wave of panic through me. I glanced at Brian, who was watching me closely, his expression unreadable. He reached out, taking my hand in his, and I squeezed it tightly, my pulse racing beneath my skin.
“Okay,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “Let’s do it.”
Chapter 8:
The waiting was the worst part.
After the CT scan, they sent me back to the exam room to wait while the results were processed. Every second that ticked by felt like an hour. I sat there, nervously tapping my foot on the floor, while Brian paced back and forth in front of me. His anxiety was palpable, and it mirrored the panic building in my chest. I didn’t know what was worse—the not knowing, or the fear of what we were about to find out.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Will came back into the room, holding a manila folder in his hand. His expression was serious—too serious. My stomach twisted into knots as I watched him sit down again, the air between us heavy with tension.
“Y/N,” he began, his voice low, “I’m not going to sugarcoat this. The CT scan showed something concerning.”
I felt Brian’s hand tighten around mine, his grip almost painfully strong. I couldn’t breathe. My chest felt tight, my heart pounding in my ears. “What is it?” I managed to ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
Will took a deep breath, his eyes soft with sympathy. “You have a tumor in your brain. It’s located in the frontal lobe, which explains the mood swings and memory lapses you’ve been experiencing. It’s putting pressure on the surrounding areas, which is likely causing the migraines as well.”
A tumor. The word hit me like a freight train, knocking the air from my lungs. I stared at Will, uncomprehending, as if he’d just spoken a foreign language.
A tumor. In my brain.
I felt the world tilt beneath me, everything spinning out of control. My heart pounded in my chest, and I was suddenly aware of every sound, every breath, every sensation. Brian’s hand in mine, Will’s steady gaze, the sterile scent of the hospital—all of it felt too real, too overwhelming.
“I—I don’t understand,” I stammered, shaking my head. “A tumor? How…?”
Will nodded gently, leaning forward, his tone careful but honest. “It’s a lot to process, I know. But the good news is that we caught it early. It’s operable, which means we can remove it. We’re going to need to schedule surgery as soon as possible.”
Surgery. Tumor. The words swirled in my head, but none of them made sense. This wasn’t supposed to happen. I was healthy. I was a firefighter—I fought through flames, saved lives. I wasn’t supposed to be the one lying in a hospital bed, waiting for a doctor to cut into my skull.
I felt my hands start to tremble, and suddenly, the weight of everything came crashing down on me. The months of mood swings, the fights with Brian, the outbursts I couldn’t control—it all made sense now. There was a tumor inside me, something foreign and dangerous, controlling me from the inside out.
“Oh my God,” I whispered, my voice breaking as the tears started to fall. “Brian… I’m so sorry.”
Brian’s arms were around me in an instant, pulling me close as I sobbed into his chest. “No,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “You don’t have anything to apologize for, Y/N. None of this is your fault.”
“But I—” I tried to speak, but the words were lost in the sobs that shook my body. All the anger, the fear, the guilt—I couldn’t hold it back anymore. “I’ve been awful to you. I didn’t know…”
Brian held me tighter, his hand running through my hair as he pressed his cheek to the top of my head. “It doesn’t matter,” he whispered. “None of it matters. We’re going to get through this. You’re going to be okay.”
I wanted to believe him, but all I could think about was the word that Will had said: tumor.
Chapter 9:
We left Chicago Med in a daze. The world outside felt too normal, too calm, compared to the storm raging inside me. The sky was still a brilliant blue, people walked down the street, completely oblivious to the fact that my life had just been turned upside down. Brian drove in silence, his hand resting on mine, squeezing gently every so often as if he was reminding himself I was still there. I couldn’t get the word out of my head—tumor.
It felt like some terrible nightmare, one that I hadn’t woken up from yet. Except this wasn’t a nightmare. This was real, and no amount of blinking or pinching myself would make it go away.
We pulled into the firehouse parking lot. I didn’t want to be here, didn’t want to face the crew and see their reactions when they found out. But we had to. They were my family—they deserved to know.
As soon as we stepped inside, I could feel the weight of everyone’s stares. They knew something was wrong. Cruz and Mouch were sitting on the couch, glancing at us with concern. Herrmann, sitting at the table, stood up as soon as he saw us, his brow furrowed.
“Everything okay?” he asked, his voice cautious.
I looked at Brian, but the words got stuck in my throat. How was I supposed to tell them? How was I supposed to explain that everything I’d been through over the past few months wasn’t just stress or exhaustion, but something far more terrifying?
Brian took a deep breath, his voice low and steady. “We went to Chicago Med. Will Halstead ran some tests on Y/N.” He paused, his grip on my hand tightening. “They found a tumor. In her brain.”
The room went silent.
It was like the air had been sucked out of the firehouse. I could see the shock ripple across their faces, the confusion, the fear. Cruz’s mouth opened as if to say something, but no words came out. Boden stepped forward, his eyes filled with quiet understanding.
“A tumor?” Herrmann repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. “What does that mean? Is it… is it serious?”
I took a shaky breath, trying to keep the tears at bay. “It’s operable,” I said, the words sounding distant, as if someone else were speaking them. “They’re scheduling the surgery soon. I’ll… I’ll be okay. That’s what Will said.”
But as I said it, I wasn’t sure if I believed it. The fear gnawed at my insides, making it hard to breathe, hard to think. How could I be sure everything would be okay when nothing felt okay right now?
There was a long, heavy pause before Boden spoke. “We’re going to be here for you, Y/N,” he said softly, his voice steady and full of quiet authority. “Whatever you need—whether it’s before, during, or after the surgery—you’re not going through this alone.”
The words should have brought me comfort, but instead, they only made the knot in my chest tighten. I didn’t want to be the one who needed help. I didn’t want to be the one who was weak, who was sick. I was a firefighter. I was supposed to be strong, to take care of others. Not the other way around.
But now, everything had changed.
I couldn’t hold it back any longer. The sobs broke through, my chest heaving as I tried to breathe, to speak. “I’m sorry,” I choked out, my voice breaking. “I’m so sorry.”
Boden stepped closer, his hand resting gently on my shoulder. “You have nothing to be sorry for,” he said softly.
But I did. I was sorry for everything—for the outbursts, for the way I’d lashed out at Brian, for the times I’d scared the crew with my unpredictability. I felt like I was falling apart, unraveling at the seams, and I couldn’t stop it.
Brian pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly as the tears streamed down my face. I felt everyone’s eyes on us, but it didn’t matter. I couldn’t hold anything back anymore. I cried for everything—the fear, the uncertainty, the guilt.
“I don’t know how to do this,” I whispered into Brian’s chest, my voice trembling. “I don’t know how to be this person. I don’t know how to… how to be weak.”
Brian’s voice cracked as he held me even closer. “You’re not weak,” he whispered fiercely. “You’ve never been weak, Y/N. You’re the strongest person I know. And you don’t have to go through this alone. We’re all here for you—for whatever you need.”
I shook my head, pulling back just enough to look up at him, my eyes red and swollen. “But I’ve been so awful to you. I pushed you away. I didn’t know what was wrong with me, but I—”
“Stop,” he cut me off, his voice thick with emotion. “None of that matters now. None of it. You were scared, and you didn’t know why. But we know now. And we’re going to fix it. Together.”
I wanted to believe him. I wanted so badly to believe that everything would be okay. But the fear was still there, lurking in the background, whispering that things might never be the same again.
The crew stepped forward one by one, each offering words of support, hugs, and quiet reassurances. It was overwhelming—feeling so much love and care when all I felt inside was fear. I wanted to tell them how much it meant to me, how grateful I was, but the words got stuck in my throat.
Finally, Boden spoke again, his voice gentle but firm. “You need to rest, Y/N. Go home, get some sleep, and prepare for the surgery. We’ll be with you every step of the way.”
I nodded, though I wasn’t sure I’d be able to sleep with everything swirling inside me. But I appreciated the sentiment. I appreciated all of them.
Brian took my hand, and we started to leave. As we walked out of the firehouse, I looked back at the crew—my family—standing there, watching us with worried eyes. They believed in me. They believed I could get through this.
I just wished I could believe it too.
Chapter 10:
The night before the surgery was the longest night of my life.
Brian and I went back to our apartment, and for the first time in what felt like forever, the silence between us wasn’t filled with tension or misunderstanding. It was just… heavy. There was nothing more to say, nothing more to do but wait. I could see the worry etched into Brian’s face every time I caught him glancing at me. He tried to hide it, but I knew him too well.
We made dinner, but I could barely eat. The thought of surgery, of having someone cut into my brain, was too much to bear. I pushed the food around on my plate, my stomach churning with anxiety.
Brian eventually took my hand, pulling me into the living room. We sat on the couch, and I rested my head on his shoulder, closing my eyes as he gently stroked my hair. His touch was soothing, grounding me when my mind started to spiral.
“I’m scared,” I admitted quietly, my voice barely above a whisper.
“I know,” Brian whispered back, his voice soft and full of love. “I’m scared too. But you’re going to get through this. We’re going to get through this.”
I wanted to believe him. I wanted to hold onto his words like a lifeline. But the fear, the uncertainty—it was all-consuming. I couldn’t shake the thought that something could go wrong, that I might not wake up after the surgery, that everything could change in a matter of hours.
“What if…” I started, my voice trembling. “What if something happens? What if I’m not the same after?”
Brian’s hand stilled in my hair, and he pulled back just enough to look at me. His eyes were filled with so much love, so much emotion, that it took my breath away.
“No matter what happens,” he said softly, “I’m here. I love you, Y/N. Nothing’s going to change that.”
The tears welled up again, and I blinked them away, trying to stay strong. But Brian’s words broke something inside me, and before I knew it, I was sobbing, my whole body shaking as I clung to him.
“I don’t want to lose myself,” I cried. “I don’t want to lose you.”
“You won’t,” Brian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “You won’t lose me. You’re not going anywhere, Y/N. You’re stronger than this. We’ll face whatever comes next together.”
I buried my face in his chest, feeling the warmth of his arms around me, and for the first time that night, I allowed myself to believe him.

The reader just responding “oh just shut up,he’s in love with her and they are happy what kinda person would that make me ruining that,an you know I would always watch Christopher that was stupid I love him maybe even just as much as you to the point you ain’t getting him back” joking around picking up Chris smiling running to the car while Christopher is laughing
A/N: If you like my work please comment like and reblog it means a lot to see interactions on my work !
Y/N”S POV
Being a firefighter had a lot of perks. Not only did you get to save lives but you also got to gain a family along the way. You originally weren’t from LA so you always felt a little alone. But then all that changed when you joined the 118.
Everyone welcomed you with open arms. You were the last one to join the group so you were a little intimated.
But they made you feel like you belonged from the moment you walked through the doors.
You became really close with Eddie and his son Chris. You spent all your time off with them and would always take Chris out to do fun things. You guys really bonded and you felt like you meant something to someone.
Buck was always there too and it was hard not to get feelings for the blonde. He was a second dad to Chris.
You would sometimes catch yourself daydreaming about having your own family with him.
The two of you also had a lot in common. You loved the same music, the same tv shows. He always made you laugh even when he wasn’t meaning to.
You could relate also to the family situation that he had. Being away from home and having a complicated relationship with your parents.
It’s also the reason why you left home to. To be able to start a new life for yourself.
You thought about asking him out so many times but it just never seemed like the right moment. Either the bells went off or Chris would come in. You took this as a sign that it just wasn’t supposed to happen between the two of you.
If you needed another sign that maybe it wasn’t supposed to be when he started dating Taylor
. You never really liked her and not just because Buck was head over heels in love with her. She always gave you the worst vibes. She always seemed like she had some kind of hidden agenda.
Eddie agreed with you but you thought he was just agreeing with you because he was your friend.
He kept trying to convince you that the two of you belonged together but you didn’t believe it.
You guys were wrapping up your shift. It was long and all you wanted to do was go home and kick back and eat pizza. Chris had coming up running to you breaking you out of your thoughts.
“Y/N hey I missed you” Chris said grabbing you in a big hug.
“Hey bud I missed you to what are you doing here” You asked
“Carla dropped me off she had somewhere to go so she dropped me off to have dad take me home are you coming over tonight” Chris asked.
“Yeah Y/N come on over Chris really misses you ” Eddie said
“I don’t guys i’m tired maybe i should just go home besides I took all my clothes home to wash already so I don’t even have anything” You said smiling up at them.
“Listen we all know why your being a little sad it’s pretty obvious” Eddie said looking over at Buck and Taylor who were laughing with each other.
“It’s not about them besides I’m happy for them. They both seem really happy together” You said glancing over at them.
““oh come on you just need to tell Buck how you feel, you would be better together then him and Taylor I didn’t tell him but there’s just something about that relationship that’s just off, also I have a extra shirt downtown would you mind spending the night with Christopher?“ Eddie said.
He slapped me in the arm hard and I looked up and pouted at him
““oh just shut up,he’s in love with her and they are happy what kinda person would that make me ruining that,an you know I would always watch Christopher that was stupid I love him maybe even just as much as you to the point you ain’t getting him back” Y/N said
The two of you ran off to your car after leaving Eddie behind in the dust. Maybe you did need this. Eddie was right that you were just upset over Buck. But you weren’t going to admit that to him.
Buck’s POV
Taylor texted me she was coming over to the firehouse. I mean was I happy to see her of course but also I didn’t want her coming around here.
I mean I just didn’t want Y/N to see her. Not that Y/N was mean or anything I know I’m rambling but the whole thing is really complicated.
I was maybe In love with Y/N which I know is wrong to say because I’m in a relationship and were just friends.
But i never thought she would see me the same way. I always also though she had something going on with Eddie.
The two of them always seemed close. She was going over his house all the time. I mean I couldn’t compete with all that.
When I meant Taylor it was just fun and casual. Then things started to become more serious between the two of us. I really did like her but it just wasn’t the same kind of love I had for Y/N.
I could always tell that no one else in the firehouse really liked her. I mean part of it hurt because it was the person I was dating but then on the other hand. I knew why they had those kinds of feelings for her.
Taylor did always take advantage of situations sometimes when she saw a good story. It was a constant reason why we were always fighting.
Eddie and Y/n were sitting by the fire truck laughing and talking to each other and I wanted to go and join but I didn’t think it was a good idea. I just decided to wait off to the sides. I didn’t want to interrupt whatever was going over there anyways.
I pulled out my phone and started going through social media hoping to just kill some time.
“Hey you what are you doing” Taylor asked coming up and tapping me on my elbow.
“Nothing just waiting on you are you ready to go” I asked putting my phone in my pocket.
We started walking towards my car and I passed Eddie and Y/N Talking to each other.
“oh come on you just need to tell Buck how you feel, you would be better together then him and Taylor I didn’t tell him but there’s just something about that relationship that’s just off, also I have a extra shirt downtown would you mind spending the night with Christopher?“ Eddie said
“oh just shut up,he’s in love with her and they are happy what kinda person would that make me ruining that,an you know I would always watch Christopher that was stupid I love him maybe even just as much as you to the point you ain’t getting him back” Y/N said.
When i heard her say that it felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest it was beating so fast.
I cracked a smile also thinking that Y/N was also in love with me. That her and Eddie weren’t together like I thought.
I wanted to go and confront her before she took off but that didn’t seem like the best move.
Also I didn’t want to say anything just incase she changed her mind. But I also felt like I needed to go and say something.
It just felt like my head was spinning and I didn’t know what to say or think. That I didn’t want to screw up and besides it seemed like an invasion of their privacy listening in on their conversation.
I snapped out of my thoughts before I ended up thinking to hard about this and bursting a blood vessel or something.
Me and Taylor got into my truck and then i took off into the direction of my apartment.
“Your being quiet” Taylor said.
“Yeah sorry just a long day at work” I said
“I get that I’m here if you wanna talk about it” Taylor said
“Thanks” I said letting the conversation fall.
LA Traffic was awful so we reached my apartment about 45 minutes later. We both got out and made our way upstairs.
When we got in I just dropped my stuff down and went and flopped on the couch.
Taylor came and sat next to me and looked up and smiled.
“So what’s the plans for tonight because I don’t feel like just sitting in the apartment I wanna go and do something” She said.
“I know I get that and honestly I’m really tired and would rather just do some take out and watch some movies” I told her.
“That’s what we did the last time we hung out” Taylor said pouting.
“I know and I’m sorry but work was a lot and I’m just tired” I said sitting up to look at her.
“Look is there something else going on” Taylor said
“No what makes you thinks that It’s just we had a lot of calls and I’m not in the mood to go out and get drunk or party” I said being honest with her.
“Fine but I’m going out I’ll text you okay” Taylor said
“Yeah okay” I said not in the mood to fight.
This whole thing even before the conversation I heard earlier this whole relationship just felt like it was running on it’s last leg.
I got a buzz on my phone and groaned but then picked it up to see who it was.
It was from Y/N and I smiled and picked it up my mood shifting to see it was her.
It was a pic and I opened it up to see her and chris smiling into the camera. She sent another text saying.
“Eddie’s out on a date and Chris wants to see his uncle buck want to come over for Pizza and Movies” She asked
I quickly texted her back
“Hell Yeah I’m on my way” I sent her back.
“We can’t wait to see you !” Y/N said back
I grabbed my stuff and ran out there. Eddie’s house wasn’t that far. I was smiling ear to ear heading over to them.
When I got there I ran out the Jeep and went up to his front door knocking on it. Chris was the one who answered it. He looked up and smiled at me.
“Uncle Buck is here” He shouted.
Y/N walked to the door in Eddie’s T-Shirt and sweatpants. She smiled real big when she saw me.
“Thanks for coming you got here quick” She said
“Yeah I was in the area and came right over” I said
“Come on Pizza is on the way were picking out a movie” Chris said.
“Awesome because I am starving” I said.
We walked in and made our way to the couch. I kicked off my shoe and took of my jacket and headed over to the couch.
“So what’s on the list” I asked
“Were stuck between Toy story and a marvel movie” Y/N said.
“Well me personally Toy story is a classic we can’t beat that” I said
Chris laughed and i looked at him confused
“That’s what Y/N said” Chris said.
“Because it is a classic a true timeless original” Y/N said.
“And 2 out 3 wins so I’ll just go ahead and put it on” Y/n said.
She took the remote and put it on. Chris groaned a little but we both just laughed him off. A little bit into the movie the pizza came.
“Pizza’s here Yay” Chris yelled
“I got it” Y/N said getting up
“I’m glad you came and it was Y/N”s idea to invite you over she was thinking about you” Chris said laughing
“Well I’m glad because I didn’t want to be alone tonight” I said smiling.
I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks from the mention that Y/N wanted to see me.
A few minutes later she came back and put down pizza’s and sodas and a bunch of other stuff to.
“Were having a feast tonight” Y/N said
“ I can see that look at all this” I said
“It’s friday night we need to party” She said.
I laughed and we all dug into the food. It was really good. She had gotten pizza ,wings ,fries and mozzarella sticks. We all ate good until we thought we were going to burst. We finished the movie too.
Chris fell asleep not to long after eating so it was just me and Y/N finishing the movie. It was really nice just to sit back and enjoy each other presence.
When the movie ended she looked over at me and smiled.
“Hey will you help me take him to his bed” She said
“Of course” I said getting up and picking up Chris and carrying him to his room. Y/N followed behind me and I laid Chris down on his bed and tucked him in.
“Good night buddy” I said to him
“Good night love see you in the morning sweet dreams” She said to him.
We turned out the lights and quietly headed out.
We made our way back into the living room and I helped her clean up the dinner mess.
“Thanks for coming by It really means a lot I hope I didn’t mess anything up for you” Y/N said
“Oh absolutely not I wasn’t doing anything I’m glad you invited me over” I said
I decided to speak up and shoot my shot. It seemed like a good time now and I didn’t want to not say anything and just loose the chance.
“ I heard your uh conversation earlier with Eddie” I said
“Oh I’m sorry I didn’t want to mess anything up with you guys im sorry” Y/N said her face turning bright red.
“No it’s okay I’m not bringing this up because I’m mad in anyway i’m saying it because I want you to know I love you I have for a while now and I didn’t think i stood a chance” I said playing with my hands nervously.
Y?N walked over and grabbed my hands and looked up at me and smiled
“You always stood a chance with me. I love you to I have been in love with you for a while but you were with Taylor and I didn’t think i had a chance you know” She said.
“Maybe we both should have just talked to each other” I said laughing
“When did you grow up” Y/N said smiling.
“Well as a I get older I do get a little wiser” I said
“Oh yeah well in your case that might not be true at all” She said poking me
“Ouch that kinda hurt my feelings” I said pouting
“Oh just shut up and kiss me already” Y/N said.
“Yes Mam’am” I said
I leaned down and kissed her and she kissed me back.It was short and sweet. But it really meant a lot.
We broke the kiss and we just looked into each others eyes and smiled before pulling away.
“What about taylor” Y/N asked
“That relationship is over I’ll talk to her in the morning I promise” I said
“Good because I wanna start this off right the last thing we need is that bad karma out there in the world” She said
“ I agree” I told her leaning down and kissing her again.
Suddenly the door opened up and I heard someone loudly clearing their throat.
“I’m gone out one night and I come home to this in my own home” Eddie said a little loud
“First off all stop being dramatic it could be a lot worse second off shh man Chris is sleeping” Y/N said
“Yeah yeah what ever I’m going to bed good night little love birds” Eddie said stumbling into his room.
“That man is clearly drunk but also i’m glad he had fun” she said laughing
“He’s gonna regret that in the morning” I said laughing.
“You want to watch Toy Story 2 and eat more cold pizza” Y/N said.
“I would love that let me go grab the spare blankets and pillows” I said
“I am going to get us some drinks” Y/n said
I went off and grabbed some stuff from the closet and Eddie was passed out on the bed in his clothes. I just laughed and took a pic of him.
I went back to the living room and Y/n was setting up the movie for us. I sat down and passed out the blanket and pillows.
We got comfortable and we started on the second movie. She leaned her head on me. I smiled down at her.
I was so glad I came over and glad I opened up. We ended up both falling asleep after that movie. I was glad I decided to come over here tonight and be with my family.

gorgeous
park sunghoon x gender neutral! reader
college student! au || 5.4k
this is literally over a year old and I’m only posting it now I’m the worst and I’m not going to proofread it either, whether or not it makes sense is in god’s hands, it’s also been like 5 and a half years since I played beer pong so hopefully I remember it correctly rip
there’s some underage drinking and y/n has some ~suggestive~ thoughts about sunghoon, there’s just kissing though - we’re also going to pretend y/n has a brother for the sake of this storyline, so sorry if you don’t
summary: you’ve been kind of crushing on this cute guy in your business class for a while now, but like, it’s not like he’d ever like you back anyway, he doesn’t even know you exist …. right?
You don’t believe in crushes. They’re a waste of time and energy, in your opinion. As a college student, dating someone is definitely not one of your priorities.
But of course, that hot guy in your business class exists.
You notice him on the first day of class. He’s absolutely stunning. He always looks so well put together, meanwhile there’s you, who woke up 20 minutes before class started and ran down the street in sweats. You’re sure if he was the one wearing sweats, he’d still look gorgeous.
He’s 110% your type, but you push it aside. There’s no point in trying to get with him. Even if there was, he’s out of your league. You don’t even know each other’s names. Every time you think about it, you come up with a list of reasons it wouldn’t work out. As long as you remember those, you’ll be fine.
That’s what you keep telling yourself, until you actually have to speak to him during your second class.
“Okay everyone, work with the person sitting behind you. Do practice questions 1-5, make sure you write down your answers, and then submit them to the dropbox online. When you’re done, you can leave.”
You look at your friend, rolling your eyes. In every other course, your professors just let you work with the person sitting next to you. You don’t know why this prof feels the need to make life harder for all of you.
The person in front of you is already working with someone else, so you turn around, hoping you get paired up with someone decent.
“Hey,” a voice says from behind you. “I’m Sunghoon.”
You want to throw yourself out a window. He looks even better up close, as cheesy as it is to say. You aren’t even sure you brushed your hair this morning.
“y/n.” He smiles, pulling his laptop closer.
“Last name?”
“What?” He smirks.
“For the assignment,” he clarifies. “It needs both our names on it.”
“Oh, right, duh.” You spell it for him and tell him your student number.
“Let’s get it, I guess.” You laugh, opening your textbook to the right page. As long as you can get through this without making a total fool of yourself, you’ll be fine.
“Okay,” you say, “question one.”
Thankfully, Sunghoon’s pretty talkative and he actually pays attention in class, so he has answers. You agree with them, for the most part, and add things on here and there.
“So for solvency ratios, you divide by net income, right?” Sunghoon asks, focused on his laptop.
“It’s net income divided by liabilities.” You’re pretty sure. But he makes you nervous. “Isn’t it?”
“Let me see that.” You hand over the textbook, letting him flip through to find the answer. You’re about to turn back to your laptop and scroll through your notes when Sunghoon groans. “You’re right, y/n. I’m just stupid.”
“Yes.” His head snaps up. It takes you a second to realize what you’ve said, but you can’t take it back now, so you just shrug.
“Damn, y/n. I thought we were friends.” You shake your head, not sure what to say. You’re scared you’ll just embarrass yourself at this point, so you try to focus on literally anything else.
It’s okay though, because Sunghoon is still smiling at you. You can’t ignore your heart beating a little bit faster. You hate that he has this effect on you. Especially since it’s your first time having a proper conversation with him.
He asks you for the next question, breaking your thoughts.
It doesn’t take you much longer to get through the work. When you’re done, Sunghoon turns his laptop around so you can double check everything. Once you give it the green light, he hands it in.
“I think he said we’re free to go now, right?” You ask, awkwardly. There’s still a lot of people in the room. You don’t want to be the first two to leavy.
“I believe so.” Sunghoon closes his laptop and pulls his jacket on. It looks expensive. You kind of wish you had one for yourself, but you know you probably can’t afford it. “Are you heading out? I’ll walk with you.”
You glance at your friend across the row, who’s still working. Part of you wants to say yes, and see what happens. Realistically, you know you’d be too nervous to say anything. You have no idea if he cares about you enough to continue speaking to you.
“That’s okay,” you tell him, gesturing towards your friend. “I’m gonna finish up some work and wait.”
“Sure,” he grabs his bag and gets up. “I’ll see you around then, y/n.” You nod awkwardly.
“Have a good weekend.” He smiles at you again, and it makes you just as nervous as the last time.
“You too.”
You watch as he heads down the aisle and out the door. As much as you try to focus on your other coursework, you can’t get him out of your head. You almost want to kill him for getting to you like this.
That night, while you’re practicing how to calculate solvency ratios, you’re still thinking of him.
You’ve probably seen him around campus before, but you don’t know anything about him. You have a feeling he’s older than you, but you’re not sure. You put your notebook away and grab your phone, opening Instagram.
It doesn’t take you long to find him. Thankfully, his profile is public.
You scroll through, looking at all the photos of him with his friends. There are some of him alone as well. You can’t help but notice how aesthetic his feed is. It suits him. Your profile is boring in comparison. The odds of him looking at it are slim anyway. You’re not too worried.
There’s a lot of photos of him with one girl as well. You click on her profile, trying to figure out if they’re together. There are pictures of her with some other guy. One of the captions mentions something about their third anniversary.
You breathe out a sigh of relief. You actually have a chance.
That thought makes you stop in your tracks. You don’t need a chance, you don’t have a crush on him. Do you?
You put your phone face down on your desk, opening your business textbook again.
Solvency ratios are a thousand times more interesting than Park Sunghoon. That’s what you tell yourself, anyway.
You have to get this stupid boy off your mind, as soon as possible.
===
You pretend he doesn’t exist until you see him in class on Friday.
When you walk into your lecture hall, you pass by him. When he notices you, he looks up and smiles. You try smile back like a normal person, ignoring the warmth in your cheeks.
You find your friends a few rows back, and get settled next to them. Usually when you get bored in lectures, you distract yourself on your laptop. Today, you find your eyes focusing on Sunghoon.
When you glance at him, he’s running his hand through his hair. You can’t help but wonder how soft it is. An image of the two of you making out pops into your head. The thought of your fingers tangled in his hair makes you blush. You hope none of your friends notice.
Your professor gives you some group work to do soon after that. You’re grateful for once, as it gives you something else to focus on.
Once you’ve completed it with your friends, you can’t help but glance at Sunghoon again. He’s talking to the person next to him, laughing at something they said. You can’t help but wish that was you making him laugh like that.
“Did you get what our prof said earlier?” Your friend says from beside you. You jump, trying to act normal.
“Sorry, what?”
“Our prof,” your friend says. “What pages did he say to study for our quiz?”
“Oh, right.” You scroll through the notes you took on your laptop, trying to find where you wrote it down.
For the rest of the lecture, you make sure to focus. You’ll be damned if your GPA drops because you were staring at some random boy in class instead of paying attention. That would be an absolute embarrassment.
When class is over, your friends ask if you want to get lunch with them. You say sure, packing up your things, getting ready to go.
As all of you head out of the room, trying to decide where to eat, you feel a hand on your arm.
“Wait, y/n,” you turn around. “Can I talk to you for a sec?”
Of course it’s Sunghoon.
“What’s going on?” One of your friends ask. You shake your head.
“Go,” you tell them. “Text me and I’ll meet you there after.” They nod, and you watch them disappear down the hallway.
“Sorry,” Sunghoon says when you turn to face him, “I wanted to catch you before I forget.”
“Sure,” you respond. You have literally no idea what he wants.
“I just wanted to say I know you.” You blink.
“I’m sorry, what?” Sunghoon looks down. He seems almost embarrassed.
“That probably sounded creepy, whoops.”
“A little bit.” The two of you smile at each other.
“I know your brother,” he clarifies.
“You do?” He nods, telling you they were friends in elementary school. When he mentions the classes they were in together, you recognize their teachers’ names. Your brother’s 2 years older than you, so Sunghoon must be as well.
“Last week I thought your name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t figure out where I’d heard it before.”
“Oh, wow,” you respond. “I feel bad, I don’t remember you at all.” As soon as it comes out of your mouth, you regret it. You probably sound so mean. Sunghoon doesn’t seem fazed.
“I didn’t think you would, we never really spoke before.”
“Wait,” you say, suddenly. A memory just popped into your head. “Didn’t my brother accidentally slam your finger in a door at his birthday party? Or am I thinking of someone else?”
“That was me.” Sunghoon laughs. “Of all things to remember, it had to be the most embarrassing one.”
“I’m sorry.” You can’t help but laugh too.
“I’m just glad I exist somewhere in your memory.” That makes you blush.
“Of course you do.” He smiles at you.
“Anyway,” he says. “Your friends are probably waiting for you, you should go.”
“Oh, right.” You had almost forgotten about them. “Good thinking.”
“We can catch up later,” he tells you. “I’ll see you around, y/n.”
“See you.”
Once he’s walked away, you pull out your phone, trying to figure out where your friends went. They’re right next door, so you speed walk over. You need advice. You can’t believe Sunghoon remembers you from over ten years ago. You can’t wrap your mind around it.
“He likes you!” is the immediate reaction when you tell your friends what Sunghoon said. You roll your eyes, but you’re pretty sure you’re blushing.
“Oh my god, do you like him too?” Your best friend asks. You shake your head right away.
“Of course not.”
“I wonder what he looked like as a kid, was he cute then?” You shrug.
“I genuinely do not remember him.”
“But he remembers you.”
“Maybe you have a point,” you admit.
“Exactly!” Your best friend says. “He was thinking of you outside of class, that means something y/n.”
“Oh my god.” You can’t argue with that logic. “And he said we could catch up later, what does that even mean?”
“He wants to talk to you again!” One of your other friends chimes in. “I ship it.”
You cover your face, so no one sees you blushing. “I don’t need this right now. It sounds like a fic or something.”
“y/n’s out here living my dream life. Your brother’s best friend, my god.” You roll your eyes. “Did he ask for your number?”
“No.” You sigh.
“Idiot.” That makes you laugh. “You have the rest of the semester to make him fall in love with you. That’s more than enough time.”
They all start talking about something else, which you’re grateful for. Although Sunghoon’s still in the back of your mind. They made some valid points.
He was thinking about you outside of class. And he did imply he wants to talk to you again.
Then again, that doesn’t mean anything. He was probably just being nice.
But when you get home that night, your phone lights up while you’re getting ready for bed. When you see it’s an Instagram notification, you pray it’s him.
It’s just your cousin. You hate that you’re disappointed.
As you lay there in the dark, contemplating whether you should add him as a friend, you can’t deny it.
You do have a crush on Park Sunghoon after all. Damn it.
===
For the next week, you try to act cool about it. You haven’t spoken to Sunghoon since he told you he knows you. You were hoping he would add you on some form of social media, but he hasn’t. You know you could make the first move yourself, but you’re too anxious to do that.
Your friends continue to tease you, but you just roll your eyes and tell them to stop being ridiculous.
You make more of an effort with your appearance for the next class. Sunghoon’s always showing up in blazers, looking flawless. You know you could never reach his level, but you should at least try.
The stupid boy’s got you waking up early just so you can pick a decent outfit and make sure you look alive. You hate him.
You get to class before he does on Friday. Thankfully, your friends don’t say anything about it when you sit with them in the back.
Towards the end of class, your professor reminds you of your midterm project.
“I know it’s early, but you should start preparing.” He says. “I’ve randomly assigned you partners, you can find them under the class list online.”
“What if you got paired up with your future boyfriend, y/n?” One of your friends whispers.
“Shut up.”
But you open a new tab in your browser and check anyway.
“Oh no.” Your friends all turn to look at you. You highlight where your name and Sunghoon’s are on the screen and turn your laptop to face them. “I’m screwed.”
“No, you’re not!”
“It’s a good opportunity to get closer to him.” You roll your eyes. “Literally or figuratively.”
“Stop it!” Although you have been thinking about getting closer to him physically these days. You would never admit it though. Those thoughts are for you, and you alone.
After class, you contemplate asking Sunghoon for his number, for academic purposes, of course, but you can’t find the courage to do it. You expect him to come over and ask for yours, but he doesn’t either. You’re slightly disappointed while you walk home from class.
Later that night, you get a Facebook message from him. You had completely forgotten you even have Facebook, considering you never use it anymore. You don’t know anyone your age who uses it. Then again, Sunghoon is older, so maybe that’s why.
Sunghoon [10:37pm]: hey y/n, I saw we’re partners for the midterm project
Sunghoon [10:37pm]: we should probably meet up and figure out what we’re gonna write about
y/n [10:40pm]: hey !!
As soon as you send the double exclamation mark, you want to kick yourself. You sound way too excited. It’s bad enough you’re responding less than 5 minutes after he messaged you.
y/n [10:41pm]: that’s probably a good idea, did you have something in mind already?
Sunghoon [10:41pm]: I haven’t looked at the instructions yet, I don’t even know what the paper is on
The fact that he responded so quickly makes you even more excited. Then again, he could’ve just had his phone in his hand anyway. It’s probably just convenient for him to respond to you now instead of waiting.
Sunghoon [10:43pm]: you live on campus, right?
Sunghoon [10:43pm]: we could meet in the student centre over the weekend and think it over
You’re about to respond and tell him yes, of course, when you get another message.
Sunghoon [10:44pm]: or we can wait, I know normal people go out on the weekend
That makes you pause for a second. What is he trying to say? You shake it off.
y/n [10:45pm]: are you not a normal person, park sunghoon? 👀
You don’t know what compels you to use his full name like that. Hopefully he doesn’t think it’s weird.
Sunghoon [10:45pm]: shut up y/n 😤
Sunghoon [10:45pm]: I just thought you might have like, a hot date or something, I didn’t want to ruin your plans
You want to scream. You wish you had the guts to send something back about going on a hot date with him, but you can’t bring yourself to do it.
y/n [10:47pm]: don’t worry
y/n [10:47pm]: you can have me all to yourself
Why are you so stupid? Sunghoon reads your message before you even have time to figure out if there’s a way to unsend it.
Sunghoon [10:47pm]: good
Sunghoon [10:48pm]: does tomorrow work for you?
y/n [10:48pm]: sure
You’re afraid to say too many words, in case you wind up saying something stupid again.
Sunghoon [10:49pm]: 2?
y/n [10:49pm]: yeah, that works!
Sunghoon [10:50pm]: okay cool
Sunghoon [10:50pm]: I’ll probably stop at starbucks before
Sunghoon [10:50pm]: what’s your order?
Okay, now you’re really going to scream. The fact that he’s willing to bring you a drink is so sweet. He could just be being nice, but you choose to believe this is something more.
You take a second to think about it. You can’t even remember your usual Starbucks order. Your mind’s gone completely blank. You open the app on your phone to look at their menu. Then you realize how stupid you seem. Sunghoon’s not good for your health.
y/n [10:53pm]: an iced chai latte would be great 🥺
y/n [10:53pm]: bless your soul
Sunghoon [10:54pm]: okay cool I’ll see you then
You don’t want to leave him on read, but you have no idea what else to say. You like his message instead. A heart seems a little excessive, but whatever.
The next day you get to the student centre earlier than you intended. Your anxiety convinced you it would be best to get there before Sunghoon. You find a spot in the corner and pull out your laptop, looking at the assignment requirements.
About five minutes later, you get a message from Sunghoon. You tell him you’re over by the vending machines.
It takes all your energy not to stare at the door and wait for him to come in. You force yourself to look at literally anything else. The last thing you want to do is make a fool of yourself. Again.
“y/n!” Sunghoon sits on the couch across from you, putting your drink down on the table in front of you. “Here you go.”
“Thank you,” you respond, picking it up. He got you a venti. After you take a sip, you pull out your phone. “Here, I’ll pay you back right now.”
“No, it’s okay.” He shakes his head, smiling. “It’s my treat.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, it’s fine.” He gets his laptop out of his bag. “You can get it next time.”
The fact that he thinks there’s going to be a next time makes you blush. You focus on the screen in front of you, you can’t bring yourself to look at him. He probably means another study session, but you can’t ignore the butterflies in your stomach.
“Shall we pick a topic?”
The two of you spend the next hour working. You both wanted to research a similar topic. Sunghoon says he’s okay going with your idea. He thinks it’s better than his. You can’t hide your smile.
You both go through your university’s online library, looking for resources. Once you’ve found the required amount of peer-reviewed articles, you decide to take a break.
Sunghoon watches as you chug about half of your drink.
“Thirsty, are we?” You almost choke. You know he didn’t mean it like that, but part of you wonders if he’s winding you up.
“Shut up.” He just smiles, taking a sip of his own drink.
You finish it, and suggest you get back to work right away. You aren’t sure how to make conversation with him like a normal person, so it’s probably best to just focus on your school work.
The two of you come up with an outline for your paper and decide to stop there for now. Sunghoon suggests you get together in a few days, to add some information and start writing the actual paper. You tell him sure, promising to buy him Starbucks then. He agrees.
As you leave the building together, part of you hopes he’ll offer to walk you home. He doesn’t.
“I’ll see you later, y/n.” You nod.
“Sure.”
“I’ll text you.”
That makes you smile.
“Sure,” you say again, sounding much happier this time.
You hope Sunghoon doesn’t notice, but he’s laughing as he walks away.
You completely forget about it when you get home, as your roommates bombard you the second you walk through the door.
“What’s going on?” You ask, taking off your shoes. “Did someone die?”
One of them shakes her head. “Jungwon invited us to his Halloween party.”
“Halloween party?” You frown. “We never go to parties.”
“Well no,” your other roommate responds. “But it’s Jungwon.”
That’s a solid point. All of you have known Jungwon for quite a while now.
A lot of the guys on your campus are big into drinking, throwing parties every weekend. You and your roommates aren’t into that sort of thing. Some of them don’t even drink. But Jungwon’s pretty tame, you know he wouldn’t throw a crazy party like that. This one will definitely be much calmer. You trust him.
“Do we have to dress up?” You ask, more concerned about that than anything else.
“Of course we do!”
“Let’s do matching costumes.”
“Please, no.”
“Come on, y/n! It’ll be fun.”
===
The second you step into the party, you regret going. You should’ve convinced your friends to stay home and watch scary movies instead. You feel so stupid with the cat ears on your head and the whiskers you drew on with eyeliner. You don’t even have a tail.
Now, you’re awkwardly sitting on the couch in Jungwon’s living room. There’s some Pitbull song about a hotel room playing from another room. They could have at least chosen better music.
Your friends are having fun, at least. One of them got you a drink. You aren’t sure what it is. Coke and something. Maybe vodka? It tastes good, that’s all that matters to you.
When your friends decide to play beer pong, you can’t help but laugh. One of them is quite tipsy, so her aim is way off. After missing a few shots, her partner gives up on her.
“We’re switching players,” your friend tells the other team. “y/n, come here.” You didn’t sign up for this, but at least it’ll give you something to do. You get up and walk over.
“Wait, wait,” one of the guys says. Jay, you think. You know he’s one of Jungwon’s friends. “If you’re allowed to change players halfway through the game, so are we.”
“Go on then,” you respond, grabbing a ping pong ball. Your team is losing. You’ve got 2 cups left on your side of the table. Jay’s side has 5. You know you’re probably screwed, but it’s worth a shot. Maybe it’s the alcohol that’s making you competitive.
“Get out of here, Jake.” Poor Jake looks slightly wasted too. You don’t blame Jay for wanting him out. “Sunghoon, you’re up.”
You freeze. Of course Park Sunghoon’s who you’re playing against. The universe seems obsessed with throwing the two of you together.
He’s dressed as a vampire, which suits him quite well. He pulls out his fake teeth and grabs a ping pong ball.
“Oh, hey kitty,” he says when he notices you. It takes you a second to realize he’s referring to your costume. “You look cute.” His smile almost makes you pass out. There’s no way you’re winning this. Your team would’ve been better off with your drunk friend instead.
“Shut up.” It’s the only thing you can think to say. Sunghoon raises an eyebrow at you before tossing the ball. It lands right into the cup in front of you.
“No, y/n,” he replies. “You shut up.”
You give him a dirty look, grabbing your drink. Thankfully, someone suggested you leave the cups empty and have your own drinks whenever you need to. Apparently one of Jungwon’s roommates said traditional beer pong is unsanitary. You agree.
While you take a few sips, your friend makes a quiet comment about how Sunghoon’s clearly flirting with you. You almost choke. This entire situation is ridiculous, you should just run away.
“Okay, let’s go.” You say once you’re finished. Thankfully, you manage to get a ball into one of their cups as well. Jay grabs his beer, quickly drinking some before taking his shot.
When he misses, you can’t help but cheer. You’re a little bit louder than you intended though. You spot Sunghoon smiling at you from across the room.
Your friend manages to get the next ball in as well. Sunghoon throws back his head while he chugs his drink and you can’t help but to notice what a pretty neck he has. All you want is to pull him into an empty room and mark him as yours.
Jay’s voice snaps you back to reality. Maybe you should have dressed up as the vampire instead.
Thankfully, you don’t totally suck at beer pong. You manage to get 2 balls in yourself, and your friend gets 2 as well.
The boys have only managed to get the one in. You’re down to one cup each. It’s your turn, so you let your friend take the shot.
Once the ball lands in the final cup, you cheer. All your friends crowd around the two of you, giving you a big group hug. You almost want to dance to the stupid Pitbull hotel room song. Maybe coming to this party wasn’t a total flop after all.
As you all let go of each other, you see Sunghoon across the table, finishing whatever’s left of his drink. When he puts the cup down, he makes eye contact with you. You’re surprised you manage to hold his gaze. It’s probably the alcohol.
You’re even more shocked when he appears right in front of you. It’s quite loud. He leans down so you can hear him.
“Let’s get out of here.” You can feel his breath on your ear.
“Okay.” His face breaks out into a smile, and he grabs your hand. You barely have time to process it before he’s leading you out of the room.
“Where are we going?” You ask, once both of you are in the hallway.
“My room.”
“I’m sorry, what?” Your eyes go wide.
“No, it’s okay,” he says quickly. “I live here. Didn’t you know?”
You follow him as he leads you up the stairs. “Nope.”
“I’ve lived with Jungwon since last year.” Sunghoon pushes his bedroom door open, letting you walk in first. It’s cleaner than you thought it would be. “I didn’t know you were friends.”
“We did a project together in psych once,” you tell him. You have no idea where you’re supposed to go. The only place to really sit is his bed but that doesn’t feel right.
“Come here.” Sunghoon takes your hand again, pulling you over to the window. You didn’t realize it opened out onto the roof. It’s flat so you’re not concerned about drunkenly falling off.
“Wait, this is so cool.” He opens the window, climbing through first. Then he helps you, holding onto your waist until you get your footing. “Thanks.”
He pulls off his vampire cape, laying it down so the two of you can sit on it. You make sure you’re facing him.
“The view isn’t that nice though.” The two of you glance towards the street. It’s the main road on your campus. There’s not much to look at, besides a lot of buildings.
“Don’t look at that,” you respond. “Look at me.” You’re surprised you have the guts to say it. If you're going to flirt with him, it may as well be now, while you’ve got liquid courage in your veins.
“Gladly.” When you make eye contact again, you feel less nervous. “You’re much prettier anyway.”
You can’t get a read on him. He must be somewhat interested in you if he’s ditched a party and brought you up to his room. It would only make sense.
“Don’t be silly."
“I’m not,” he replies.
You aren’t really sure what to say to him, so you two sit in silence for a little while. It doesn’t feel uncomfortable.
“I was going to ask you to come here,” Sunghoon says suddenly.
“To your room?” He shakes his head.
“To the party, I mean.”
“Oh, duh.” It must be the alcohol making your brain fuzzy. Or maybe it’s being in his presence. Or both.
“When I found out Jungwon told you about the party instead, I was kind of sad.”
“Oh?” You aren’t sure where he’s going with this.
“Yeah,” Sunghoon looks down. “I thought I missed my chance.”
“To do what?”
“Remember when you said I was stupid?” His voice is quiet. You can’t help but reach out and lift his head so he’s looking at you. Once you make eye contact, you drop your hand so it’s on his arm instead.
“Technically, you said it.” You remind him. “I just agreed.”
“Right,” he says, smiling. “Well, you had a point.”
“I know.” That makes him laugh.
“I should’ve asked for your number then.”
“What are you trying to say, Park Sunghoon?”
“I like you, y/n.” You take his hand in yours.
“I like you too, Sunghoon.” He shakes his head.
“No, like, I like you.” You smile.
“I know,” you tell him. “I’ve had a crush on you since the beginning of the semester.”
“You have?” He seems shocked.
“Of course,” you hit him with your other hand, but he grabs that one too. “Have you seen yourself?”
He looks down, smiling at himself. “You think I’m handsome?” He asks quietly.
“Why are you acting all shy?” Sunghoon looks up again. You’re pretty sure he’s blushing. “Obviously, I do.”
“Wait, wait,” he says, “I got distracted.”
“Distracted from what?”
“I meant to ask you a question.”
“Go on then.” You squeeze both his hands.
“Can I have your number?”
You can’t stop yourself from laughing. You didn’t know what he was going to say, but you didn’t expect that.
“Give me your phone.”
Once you’ve typed your info in, you hand it back. Right away, your own phone buzzes in your pocket. You pull it out, checking the message Sunghoon sent you.
Unknown [12:03am]: can I take you on a date tomorrow?
y/n [12:04am]: tomorrow as in today or tomorrow tomorrow
Sunghoon laughs from beside you. You can’t help but smile as well. While he responds, you save him as a contact.
Sunghoon [12:05am]: whenever you want
y/n [12:05am]: I’d love to :)
You wait for Sunghoon to text you back, but he doesn’t. When you glance over at him, he’s already looking at you.
“Good,” he whispers, before leaning into you.
You don’t hesitate, immediately doing the same. You can’t help but grin into the kiss. You’re pretty sure Sunghoon is as well.
When he pulls away, you’re laughing.
“Are you laughing because I’m a bad kisser or because you’re drunk?”
“I’m not sure,” you admit. “Kiss me again and I’ll let you know.”
Sunghoon smiles, pulling you into him again.
“Sure,” he places a kiss on your neck. “I’d be more than happy to.”

LA local news fluff piece:
Love (And Smoke) Is in the Air: two firefighters caught sharing an intimate moment after they put out a fire on 44th and Sunset. The video, captured by a resident of the apartment that burned down last Thursday, shows two firefighters, names unknown, kissing in celebration after the last of the flames had been put out. And celebration was in order because while the apartment suffered major property damages, no one was severely injured and all burns were able to be treated on the scene.
The LAFD had this to say: “We are aware of the romantic relationship between the firefighters shown in the video and such displays of affection are prohibited on the job by our code of conduct. however, love is not something the LAFD punishes so the involved firefighters were asked to stay professional on the scene in the future.”
You can see the video on our website and social media pages.
