“Stella Roe,” 21 (USA 1972–1975)

“Stella” went to an abortionist’s office for a first-trimester surgical abortion. She didn’t know that the abortionist would kill her along with her child.

Right before the abortion was going to begin, Stella was injected with lidocaine for a paracervical block. The abortionist intended to dilate her cervix and then begin operating, but never even got that far before things went horribly wrong.

Stella went into convulsions. After several of these, her heart stopped and she was no longer breathing. The abortionist gave her diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in Benadryl) and then had an ambulance take her to the hospital. However, nobody at the hospital was able to resuscitate Stella and she was pronounced dead.

Stella’s autopsy revealed that her death was the result of malpractice. Her blood level of Lidocaine (taken after death) was 9 ug/ml, which was 6 times the reading for appropriate use. This reading was taken from postmortem blood samples, and because of the way Lidocaine is metabolized, doctors noted that the levels before Stella died may have been even higher. There was also a paracervical soft-cell hematoma at the injection site. This indicated that the abortionist may have injected that unknown amount of Lidocaine directly into her vascular system.

Thanks to this toxic dose, Stella suffered pulmonary edema, convulsions and cardiorespiratory arrest. It should be noted that any amount of anesthetic that is administered to anyone undergoing surgery should be carefully measured and recorded. There is no excuse for giving a massive overdose apparently without exact measurements.

The CDC counted “Stella” as a maternal death from legal abortion. In the year that she died, the CDC was still at least trying to gather comprehensive abortion data (although these attempts were incomplete at best). Over the years, US abortion data reporting systems became voluntary and increasingly flawed, leaving many others like her uncounted.

Other abortion clients in America subjected to overdose or other misuse of anesthesia include:

Stacy Ruckman (intentionally given an overdose to speed through the abortion procedure)

Karnamaya Mongar (killed by the infamous Kermit Gosnell)

Kelly Morse (dosed with a drug she’d repeatedly told the facility she was allergic to, then turned blue while her killer proceeded with the abortion anyway)

Diane Watson (anesthetic injected directly into her vascular system)

Carole Wingo (overdosed on Demerol by facility unprepared for resuscitation)

Ying Chen (given a toxic overdose after being made to sign “consent forms” in a language she did not understand)

Ta Tanisha Wesson (overdosed on anesthesia, then left to choke to death on her own vomit)

Robin Wells (overdosed on anesthesia and improperly resuscitated according to lawsuit)

Dawn Ravenell (13-year-old who was not told to not eat, given wrong dose, woke up on the table and vomited into her lungs, then left unattended to drown in her vomit with pieces of her dead baby left inside of her)

Gina Gardner (not given informed consent, overdosed to death on anesthesia while already sedated)

Delores Jean Smith (left unattended with IV anesthesia still running, died at 15 without ever learning she hadn’t been pregnant)

“Elise Roe,” (died at 18 from massive overdose)

“Abigail Roe” (comatose and then dead at 23 after anesthetic was injected directly into her vascular system)

“Roxanne Roe” (overdosed to death at 17 years old)

King of Thieves (James Marsh, 2018): Fantastic actors, great dialogue... The second half of the film is really muddled though. Only recommended if you’re really into heist films (which I am, but like... sadly, it’s not that good)

Serena (Susanne Bier, 2014): I disagree with the people who didn’t understand Serena’s so-called change in character (she fuckin [spoiler spoiler spoiler], how the fuck isn’t that enough to change a person’s entire life???), also didn’t agree that the national park thing was a bad idea (in fact I thought it was one of the best things about the film). However, I also thought the killer guy character fell flat, the story had potential but was half-baked, and it didn’t make half as much of its setting as it could have. So. Watch Bird Box instead.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post (Desiree Akhavan, 2018): Just a... good companion to the book, a great film for gay teenagers to have, but I did not think it was anything special in and of itself

Frida (Julie Taymor, 2002): Really puzzled at the choice of making an English-language film where everyone speaks with “Mexican accents,” whatever that means... It was fine though, and would make as good an introduction as any to Frida Kahlo’s life

Skate Kitchen (Crystal Moselle, 2018): Great visuals, great setting, great acting... the only thing that makes it not an absolute favourite is the weak plot (I’m a plot person)

6 Balloons (Marja-Lewis Ryan, 2018): Just a very solid film about addiction and sibling love

The Rider (Chloé Zhao, 2017): It’s beautiful. It’s not trying to be any more than it is, not romanticising its subject, just showing matter-of-fact beauty (and heartbreaking drama)

Touch of Evil and The Stranger (Orson Welles, 1958 and 1946): I saw so many not-so-good old films last year that I almost forgot what I love about them. These were my second and third Orson Welles films, and I liked them a lot more than The Lady from Shanghai -- The Stranger particularly. What can I say? It’s Orson Welles

Thirteen (Catherine Hardwicke, 2003): Basically I feel that this should be the standard and the goal for everyone making a film about thirteen-year-olds

Abducted in Plain Sight (Skye Borgman, 2017): This month’s film that fucked me up. And it’s a documentary. And the new Ted Bundy Netflix series is like, nothing compared to how fucked up this is

Baise-moi (Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi, 2000): It’s hard for me to dissociate the film from the book (which I love dearly). Mainly though, like a lot of Virginie Despentes’s early work (Trois Etoiles comes to mind), I thought it was slightly more laudable than enjoyable. I do wish there were more films like this, just... better ones, if that makes sense. Still very good though, and recommended

Santoalla (Andrew Becker and Daniel Mehrer, 2016): Jesus... just watch it without knowing anything about it if you want to be thoroughly spooked

Jane Fonda in Five Acts (Susan Lacy, 2018): I love Jane Fonda ten times as much as I did before I saw this. She is so incredibly self-aware, and the documentary is so well-researched and to the point. What a fantastic woman

The Party’s Just Beginning (Karen Gillan, 2018): You ever see one of these films that make you think, wow, this is really what life is like? Not in a Debra-Granik, Kelly-Reichardt, giving-a-voice-to-those-etc. sort of way, just in a sort of... like, you nod along really hard because you feel like you get it and it gets you... you know? I’ve been trying to pinpoint what takes it from “very good” to “wow” and I think the soundtrack, the title, the assault scene and its aftermath are some elements, but mostly it really feels like Gillan decided to talk about what she knew with great tact and empathy... This is probably going into my favourites-of-the-year list, and it’s also one of those rare films I really want to rewatch again and again

I finally did the thing I’ve been trying not to do

We have a bunch of students here for the summer and I have been doing tours for them all week. There is a building on campus call Louise Slaughter Hall, named after the late Louise Slaughter who was our House of Representatives rep for decades.

I was giving the last of the tours today and I accidentally called it “Kelly Slaughter Hall”. I almost did it once before, but I caught myself. Now I have to explain to them that there is only one Slaughter Hall and I messed up, despite the fact that there are three Gleason Halls, two Golisano Halls, two Gannet Halls, and Gosnell Hall which often gets mixed up with the other buildings that also start with the letter “G”.

And the mess up is kind of apt because the public facing parts of the Slaughter building are absolutely pristine and the rest of the building is a dark, dingy, rat’s nest that smells like a bunch of chemicals that will give you cancer in a dozen different ways.

A trilogy that is full of life, fun, and originality.

  THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME (Antonio Campo, 2020)

An all-star cast of Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Riley Keough, Sebastian Stan, Mia Wasikowska, Bill Skarsgård, and Jason Clarke lead Antonio Campos’ thriller about corruption and brutality in a postwar backwoods town.

  GREASE (Randal Kleiser, 1978)

A musical classic.

  I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS (Charlie Kaufman, 2020)

The latest directorial effort from the great Charlie Kaufman looks like a haunting mind-bender.

  MAGIC MIKE (Steven Soderbergh, 2012)

One of Steven Soderbergh’s best features a scene-stealing performance from Matthew McConaughey.

  NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE (Joel Gallen, 2001)

This comedy satire of teen romcoms is still hilarious and has aged quite well.

  RATCHED (Evan Romansky, Ryan Murphy, 2020)

I don’t usually post about shows on here, but a prequel series looking at One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest villain Nurse Ratched starring Sarah Paulson in the titular role sounds too good to ignore.

  THE SOCIAL DILEMMA (Jeff Orlowski, 2020)

I heard good buzz about this documentary out of Sundance 2020, as it looks at the power of social media and the effect it can have on the world

  WILDLIFE (Paul Dano, 2018)

Paul Dano’s directorial debut is a quiet and powerful look at a crumbling family in the 1950’s.

  JUDY (Rupert Goold, 2019)

Renee Zellweger won her second Oscar for pitch-perfect portrayal of Hollywood icon Judy Garland.

  KRAMER VS KRAMER (Robert Benton, 1979)

This Best Picture family drama features stellar work from Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep.

  PATRIOT’S DAY (Peter Berg, 2016)

Peter Berg’s harrowing account of the Boston Marathon bombing.

  BABYTEETH (Shannon Murphy, 2020)

An emotional relationship drama with Ben Mendolsohn and Essie Davis giving two of my favorite performances of 2020.

  HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE/HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE GUANTANAMO BAY (Danny Leiner, 2004/Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, 2008)

Two-thirds of a classic stoner trilogy.

  HOOSIERS (David Anspaugh, 1986)

One of the greatest sports movies ever made.

  THE LAST BOY SCOUT (Tony Scott, 1991)

It’s directed by Tony Scott, written by Shane Black, and stars Bruce Willis.  We could call this the “90’s Trifecta”.

  PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE (Tim Burton, 1985)

Tim Burton’s debut film is utterly insane, yet absolutely brilliant

  PRISONERS (Denis Villeneuve, 2013)

Denis Villeneuve’s best film to date is a dark, disturbing crime thriller featuring incredible work from Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and cinematographer Roger Deakins.

  THE TERMINATOR (James Cameron, 1984)

One of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made.

  THE TWILIGHT SAGA (Catherine Hardwicke, 2008/Chris Weitz, 2009/David Slade, 2010/Bill Condon, 2011/Bill Condon, 2012)

I’ve only seen one of these (I think New Moon?), but want to give them a whirl at some point.  Maybe now is the time?

    BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM (Gurinder Chadha, 2003)

A rousing, inspiring indie sports film.

  CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (Marc Forster, 2018)

A somber, sweet look at Winnie the Pooh and the 100 Acre Woods gang.

  D2: THE MIGHT DUCKS/D3 (Sam Weisman, 1994/Robert Lieberman, 1996)

D2 is the best of the trilogy, but D3 is pretty good and bit underrated.

  MULAN (Niki Caro, 2020)

You have to pay $30 to see this one, but I have a feeling Disney’s latest live-action feature is going to be worth is.

  NEVER BEEN KISSED (Raja Gosnell, 1999)

A classic 90’s rom-com featuring a delightful Drew Barrymore.

  THE WOLVERINE (James Mangold, 2013)

One of the best X-Men films and the BEST Wolverine movie (hot take).
