His eyes travel up to the vines above. "Shall we attempt to retrieve your flower?"

" no, not at all! by all means! " kai-ming exclaimed, hoping he could get her free from the rock. she was engrossed in his words, eyes looking up at he mentioned the plan to get the flower down. at first, it seemed scary — but kai-ming felt as though she could trust him. and she really wanted the flower.

" okay, sounds like a plan! " she said with confidence, not even noticing he had grabbed her ankle and freed it; until she wobbled from the tension being gone. " thank you so much! i greatly appreciate it, " the princess said, stepping away from the rock and offering them a bow. " i'm kai-ming, i . . . live in japan. " she said softly. she didn't hold a title in japan's court, and she hardly wanted to be associated as a princess of china with the reputation her step-brother was attracting.

Perhaps it was in bad taste, to plan a boat race so soon after being involved in the murder on the Nagler. These boys, this race, however, was the antithesis to the large cages they had been trapped on for the past few weeks.

Graceful creatures, cutting their way through the water with a skill that reminded Kekoa of all the things there was to love about sailing. There was very little that could ruin his mood today. Nothing except the one thing he had been avoiding.

"Señor" Kekoa said, coming to stand behind Maceon. It was neither the intimate first name, nor the royal title that he would have once used. "I wanted to offer my condolences. Blanca did not deserve that fate." His mind returned to their brief run-in in Ethiopia, how exhausted Blanca had seemed. "I had thought, when I next saw you, the only thing I would be commenting on how surprised I was to see you alive. Perhaps that was naive of me."

There is something almost meditative about being on the ship, at least there was at the moment, whilst the weather was clear and the waters were calm. They were in a holding pattern, unable to scheme or maneuver, forced to trust each yother, at least for a little while.

"I do not think that is a bad thing. I rather admire people who have been able to live their lives in the light. That is Aurora I suppose," he smiled thinking about what he knew of Roman mythology, "the promise that tomorrow will come. Whatever today may bring. People only get good at being in the darkness because they have begun to fear what may be seen in the light. The best people live their lives during the day."

the spanish king had a point, and aurora smiled softly at the notion. it almost sounded like . . . well, love. to know something is there, even though she could not see it at the time. even though she spent the days on this ship apart from her husband — there was a comfort in knowing he was still here. still near her should she truly need him.
