Spotlight: Colonialism in Children’s Books Exhibition

We currently have an exhibition installed in UWM Library’s Curriculum Collection on the 2nd floor here in Golda Meir Library that focuses on Colonialism in Children’s Books held in our Historical Curriculum Collection.

Through the Historical Curriculum Collection we can gain insight into how children of the 19th and early 20th centuries were raised and educated about Indigenous people, through both textbooks and fiction. The artifacts displayed in our exhibition are but a few examples of the ways colonization was perpetuated in children’s reading materials.

Settler colonialism is based on relationships of domination and subjugation of an Indigenous population by an outside power. These relationships, carried out through warfare, diseases, military domination, genocide, cultural destruction, and forced assimilation become institutionalized and later disguised as paternalistic benevolence. This domination and subjugation can be overt, but it can also be subtle, such as in the creation and dissemination of stereotypes and attitudes in popular culture.

The objective of settler colonialism is the acquisition of both resources and territories, which necessitates the removal of Indigenous people. In some cases, this removal of Native people is symbolic. In some children’s stories, Indigenous peoples are portrayed as a nostalgic relic belonging to the historic past, or presented as an anachronism in the “modern” world. Alternatively, they are denied historical representation.

Examples from books in the exhibition:

The Essentials of Geography states: “North America was an almost empty continent, waiting for the white man to come and fill it with people.” Rather than being told that tens of millions of Indigenous people were killed by colonists since first contact, students are led to believe that the continent already was sparsely populated.

 In Our World Reader No. 1, the author, Mary L. Hall,  states that her purpose in writing the book is “not merely to give facts, but to inspire sympathy with far-off nations.” Later, Hall refers to “Esquimaux” as “filthy people,” and repeatedly describes “Indians” as “dangerous.” Rather than inspire sympathy for nations subjugated within the U.S. Empire, Hall perpetuates colonialist rhetoric, both excusing and justifying the poor treatment of Natives in the same breath.

This exhibition will be on display from August 1st through October 31st during regular library hours. Thanks to our Graduate Intern Kalani for putting this together!

Keko heaved a heavy sigh as she sat on the perimeter fence. The sun was setting, shyly peeking behind a mountain in the distance as it's last rays painted the sky in pinks and oranges.

"you've been doing that an awful lot." A voice said behind her. She turned her head slightly to see the bulking frame of Jugo, setting his hoe against the fence near her. "What's wrong kiddo?"

Another, smaller sigh, left her as she stared off into the sky, eyes soaking up the melting colors. "I dunno..." She said after a few heartbeats. "I can't quite place how I feel, really. I feel like....all my feelings were put in a jar like fireflies and shook around. My feelings are bouncing off the glass and I can't sort them out."

"Want to vent?" Jugo asked as he leaned on the fence, using his handkerchief to wipe his tanned brow of sweat. "Maybe taking the lid off the jar will help."

"I dunno..." She sighed heavily again and the pointed eared man glanced at her.

"I know those kinds of sighs. You're gonna let your chance at happiness slip away if you keep sighing about love like that. It's like a bad omen." The way Keeko didn't immediately jump on the defensive and instead tried to stop herself from sighing again told him all be needed to know.

The wind was blowing now, rustling the leaves in the trees and the nearby river rippled in reply.

"I found out the guy I fell in love with...is happily engaged." She explained. "I tried." She shrugged and slouched, picking at a scab on her leg idly. "You know, to not get attached. He's high class. Well to do. I'm a commoner. An unclaimed orphan with no familial name." She chuckled, "Shit, we aren't even the same species really."

"whatyousay?" Jugo asked, his dark bushy brows raising.

"He's Sceal." She explained.

"A fish person?" Jugo scoffed, shaking his head.

"zip it old timer." Keeko snapped with an irritated look. "He's valiant and brave, smart and really kind. He cares about everyone around him and he'd bleed himself dry if it meant it'd save even a single person....and he's really handsome on top of it all."

"ok, ok." Jugo held up his hands and watched as Keeko ran a hand through her hair to pull it back from her face. "He sounds like an alright fella. Good morals and values...Sounds like you admire him a lot."

"I'm trying to...." She kicked her feet slowly, the wind rustling her hair as she tried to braid it away from her face slowly. "Convince myself that it's all I feel. Admiration. Respect. That I'm just...confused about what I felt. Maybe then it wouldn't hurt so much."

Keeko and Jugo fell silent for a while, watching the sun slowly slink away behind the behemoth mountain, the sky slowly darkening with it's descent.

"I keep remembering though..." She sighed again, "there was this time where we were by the lake, where his home was. Some nets had managed to make their way down river and snag some Sceal children near the bank. They were tangled and couldn't right themselves, so we'd been cutting the nets. One net got hung on a rock and we couldn't get it loose. So I went in the water to cut it free. Pon, the guy, he came up to me under water and was about here from me." She gestured to a hands length away from her face.

"he helped me unsnag the net and then watched as we cut the kids free. He'd been asked to help look for them, as they admired him and looked up to him. Anyway..." She shook her head and stopped swinging her feet. "He told me that my eyes were quite beautiful. Like the waters surface when the sun hits it at the right angle...." She chuckled, a sad hollow sound. "And the smile he had when he said it...." her smile was warm, her eyes distant as she recalled the memory. "I felt my heart do a flip and my hands felt clammy...."

Keeko sighed again and closed her eyes, as if it would close the memory and rid her of the reminser. "Little did I know....the reason he found them to be so....was because they reminded him of his fiance's scales....she's the same color as my eyes."

Jugo gave a sad groan and pat Keeko on the back. "I'm sorry kid." He said softly. "You know it's neither of your guys fault, right?" He watched as her red head bobbed slightly. "The heart wants what it wants."

"it wants, what it can't have." She muttered, just above a whisper. "I guess what stings the most about it was how over the moon I was for him. My stomach clenched and my heart did flips when he was near, but he had no reaction to my presence at all." She scoffed and rubbed her eyes. "Other than a reminder of his lady fiance in the waters."

"Keeko." Jugo rubbed her back as she took in a sharp inhale of breath and held it.

"I want him to be happy." She said, her voice strained as her eyes glistened. "I want him to be treated right, and to find happiness. To go with as little hardship as he can." She cleared her throat and pressed the heels of her hands into her eyes. "And I want to be able to stand in his presence and feel nothing but the respect I have for him....but I'm....not ready yet."

Jugo let out a sigh as Keeko sniffled and rubbed her eyes free of tears. He waited for her to stop, and go back to staring off into the distance before he tried to speak again.

"Maybe some space from him will do ya some good." The old man suggested. "Time is cruel in the moment. You and him are on totally different paths, and you'd fooled yourself into thinking it was the same one...The wounds are still fresh and the pain is new." He watched the young girl closely as she lowered her gaze to the dirt.

"But it passes quickly, when you're not paying full attention to it...When something else demands your full attention, the Sceal boy will seem like a molehill instead of a mountain...Seasons will change and before you know it, you'll be able to be in the same room as him and feel nothing but the right feelings for him. The admiration and respect you have for him. Maybe then you can build an actual friendship with him. On equal terms and a similar path." He chuckled and nudged her with his elbow. "Gods know he won't be your only crush in life."

"I know." Keeko sighed again heavily, looking up as the last few days of light dimmed, and stars began to blink into view. "It'll just take time, and I feel like it's stopped for me."

"it will...for a while." Jugo agreed and pushed off from the fence. "But only for as long as you let it." He picked up his hoe and slung it over his shoulder. "If you stop livin your life, go no where and keep thinking about him and how you found out, it'll keep reopening that wound. It'll never heal and you'll grow to resent him n her. It'll turn you bitter, and you'll miss your opportunities to find your own happiness. it's sure to drive you mad, should you dwell on it too long. But it's okay to acknowledge and feel how you feel for a time." He looked over his shoulder and was surprised to see her watching him, the tense look she had when he walked up wasn't completely gone-- but she didn't look nearly as miserable.

"thanks Jugo." She said with a small smile. "I feel better with the lid off."

"Happy to help." He smiled back, "does uh, your --" he waved his free hand, trying to remember the title.

"Ba?"

"yeah...does he know how you feel?"

"yeah." She shook her head. "After Pon swam away to take the children to their homes, I told Ba I wanted to marry him. He's teased me about it since, asking me if I wanted to marry other guys from different spieces we've encountered."

"I mean, it's a valid question." Jugo laughed, then laughed louder when Keeko shot him an amused glare.

"Ba was there when Pon introduced his fiance to me...he knew instantly and told me he needed me to deliver a package to a noble." She slid off the fence and dusted her pants off. "There was no package, but I dunno if I could have kept my composure for long once the numb feeling left....so I ran off... pretended to know where I was going. Ran all the way to the city limits and waited for Ba there."

She walked toward Jugo, her eyes on her feet. "We hadnt seen Pon since, but he showed up today...he and his fiance are helping some Sceal merchants set up their storefront. They wanted materials they were used to, so they had some stone delivered to the settlement. It's a special kinda stone. From underwater."

"A fresh bandage rip." Jugo nodded his head. "No wonder you've been sighing all day."

"yup." She sighed once more and then stretched. "I know im going to be sad a little longer...but I do hope my stupid heart gets over this soon..."

The Nicktoons' Looks

As I'm sure some of you know, my newest fanfiction, SpongeBob SquarePants in Nicktoon Mysteries, will be premiering sometime this month.

And with it's premiere so close, I figured I'd take the time to share what the Nicktoon gang will look like!

SpongeBob SquarePants:

SpongeBob would be wearing an outfit quite similar to Archie in Archie's Weird Mysteries.

But with a white T-shirt underneath the jacket, black pants, his usual shoes, and a red ascot, as an homage to Fred from Scooby-Doo.

Gary would look exactly the same as he usually does.

Patrick would still be wearing swim trunks, but with a Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses now.

Also, his outfit would have the same color scheme as his fit in The Patrick Star Show.

Squidward would wearing the same outfit done by SpongeDrew250.

And Sandy would be wearing the same outfit also done by SpongeDrew250.

Danny Phantom:

Danny would the wearing the same outfit done by bad13 (both normal and ghost forms).

Sam, Tucker and Jazz would be wearing the same outfits done by luxuki-x (with the same shoes from the original show).

Valerie and Dash would be wearing the same outfits done by jadeyarts.

And Dani would be wearing a similar outfit to Danny, but with the shirt being a hoodie, her jeans being black and her shoes often being untiedd.

Her ghost outfit will also look like Danny's, but with the same color placement her original.

(Also she's gonna 14 here like Danny).

Avatar: The Last Airbender:

Team Avatar will be wearing their outfits from the comics taking place after the events of the series.

Tak and the Power of Juju:

Tak, Lok and Flora look pretty much the same as they did in the games.

Jeera and Keeko however, would be drastically different, sporting their original looks from the lost pilot.

Invader Zim:

Dib and Gaz are still sporting their looks from Enter the Florpus.

All Grown Up!:

The group would be wearing the same outfits from the All Growed Up special and the promotional material for the show.

My Life as a Teenage Robot:

Jenny, Brad, Tuck and Sheldon will be wearing the same outfits done by fitzsanchez.

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius:

Jimmy, Carl, Sheen, Cindy, Libby and Nick will be wearing the same outfits done by kianamai.

The Fairly OddParents:

Cosmo and Wanda would be wearing the same outfits from A New Wish.

While Timmy, Chester and AJ would be wearing the same outfits done by CyberEmma2099.
