How to reach Sankri base camp for the Kedarkantha Trek
A Himalayan getaway is on top of every traveler’s hit list these days. After all, where else will you get the opportunity to trek for hours on end and that too amongst one of the most beautiful sceneries of the world. In the hills of Himalayas, you find a variety of treks and places that you can visit for some much-needed adventure and peace.
The Kedarkantha Trek
One of the best treks of Himalayas is the Kedarkantha trekking trip offering you a chance to shake hands with the nature. Kedarkantha is one of the peaks of Himalayas situated in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarkashi district. It is a summit climb which means that the climb leads to the top of a mountain instead of a random stop point which gives the journey even more excitement.
The Kedarkantha Peak is also famous for its religious connotations. It is believed that Lord Shiva meditated at Juda Ka Talab located in Kedarkantha trek at one point, making the place more pious. This lake was formed from a droplet fallen from Lord Shiva’s hair. The whole trek of Kedarkantha takes upto 4 to 5 days to complete starting from the Sankri Base Camp.
The way to Sankri Base Camp
Sankri is a popular village that gives way to the Himalayan mountains and wildlife. Several treks like Bali Pass, Baraadsar Lake, Dev Kyra and Pulaara Ridge begin from here. Kedarkantha trek also starts from here only. To reach the Sankri Base camp first you will have to reach Dehradun. There are three ways you can travel to Dehradun to begin your journey.
How to reach Dehradun?
If you want to travel by Road
If you are a fan of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and want to check that road trip off your list, try travelling to your destination by road. Since Dehradun is connected to most northern cities, it will be easy to find a transport from Delhi to Dehradun. Deluxe, Semi-deluxe and AC buses, all are available for your convenience. It will take you 10 hours to reach the base camp by road. You can even travel by car if you’re feeling particularly adventurous. Although, don’t forget that this is a trekking trip and getting tired during the journey itself is not advisable. Also, mountain roads are more difficult to drive on and you will have difficulty finding a safe parking spot.
If you want to travel by Rail
The next option is to obviously travel by train. In this you will have the benefit of a lot more speed as at a reasonable cost. You can travel in comfort without having to worry about factors like weather conditions and traffic. The Dehradun Railway Station is situated in the middle of the main city. It will be easy for you to find a train to this city as it is well-connected to all the major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Lucknow etc. You will not lack for food in this medium as there are shops are located at every platform. In addition to that you can easily find a hotel near the railway station to stay for the night.
If you want to travel by Air
If you’re someone who wants to travel in comfort and is willing to splurge for it, taking a flight to Dehradun will be your best option. Not only will you get to enjoy the view from up top, you will also get regular refreshments and great service. If you want to reach Dehradun by air, you will have to take a flight to the Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun. You can take a flight till there from wherever you are as the airport is well-connected to all the major cities like Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata. In this medium, you will have to travel to the Dehradun Railway Station to find a taxi for your journey forward.
How to reach the Sankri Base Camp from Dehradun?
After reaching Dehradun you can easily find a shared taxi or a private cab to take you to your starting point. The Sankri Base Camp is a village at the altitude of 6,500 ft while the Kedarkantha peak is at the high altitude of 12,500 ft. You will come across a plethora of things to see before you reach your destination. The beautiful sight of Himalayan mountains will greet you at every step, while its variety of flora and all-around greenery will keep you delighted throughout the journey.
The difficulty level of Kedarkantha trek?
It is considered one of the easier treks of Uttarakhand so even first-time trekkers can think about taking this journey as long as they don’t have any health problems like asthma or heart ailments. This 25 km climb is a big enough challenge for beginners, without being something they can’t do because of lack of experience. Since, it is a summit climb, this trek will give you a sense of achievement once you reach the peak.

Best time to trek to Kedarkantha Peak?
Since snowfall blocks almost everything, most of the treks are inaccessible during the winters. But the kedarkantha trek is known for its winter trek as it is the most fun during the season. Not only is the view picture perfect due to the blanket of snow and pine and oak forests, the trek itself becomes more adventurous during this time. So, December to April are the best months to take this challenge. Although the trek is available throughout the year, Kedarkantha becomes a wonderland during winters. So, if you’re going to visit the place, you might as well do it during the time its at its best.

The Best Winter Trek in India for Beginners - KedarKantha
Kedarkantha Trek, one of India's best winter treks, is not only in Uttrakhand. Kedarkantha is a popular trek in Uttarakhand that is accessible to both experienced and beginning trekkers.
It's easy to get to the base camp and start this winter trek. This trek covers 24 kilometres and takes between 2 and 4 days, depending on your schedule. If you have more time and wish to trek longer distances, Har Ki Doon departs from Sankari. You can also stay here for a week if you are looking to relax.
The trek is perfect for anyone who wants to be in the midst of nature and see the snow. If the weather permits, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the Dhauladhar Range, Har Ki Doon Valley, Rupin Valley, Har Ki Doon Valley, and other areas from the summit of Kedarkantha. This view is breathtaking for tourists and nomads alike. In summer, you can see snow here from June to July, and in the rainy season, small bugyals provide a beautiful view. Anyone can conquer the 3800m peak for the first time. Because it's possible to travel here in winter, this best winter trek has gained popularity. The trek takes you to many beautiful places along the way. Juda's Pond (Juda Ka Tal) is a small, clear water pond. It is exciting to see how the water accumulates in winters. Sankari, the base camp, is also in this beautiful area, white in winters but full of colour the rest of the year.
Is the Kedarkantha winter trek difficult for a beginner?
This winter trek can be categorized as an easy, moderate, challenging trek. Winters are brutal because it can be hard to walk in snowy conditions. It is essential to be mindful of snow and how to handle it. Your physical health will determine how long you can stay on the trail. This trek can be completed in just two days if you do light walking or cycling. You can still complete the trek in three days, even if you're not accustomed to walking. You will have no problem getting to the top and will be able to keep up with the surrounding environment.
It is a good idea to warm up for the trek by walking 5 or 7 km for at least 4 days before you leave. This qualification is only a minimum. Warm-up walking should be done before you go on any trekking in the Himalayas.
Do you need a guide for the winter trek?
It all depends on your preference. You don't have to worry about the guide if you go with a trekking company.
If you're going solo and have people or friends with you, the porter should be your guide. Even if you need to transport your stuff, the porter will still be there to help you. You can see the path if you go in the summer. The path becomes difficult to see in winter due to the new snowfall. You won't need to ask for directions if you go during the trekking season.
You will find out whether the trekking season has started or not and how many people are on the peak. If you're still not satisfied with the information, hire a porter. You can also transport your goods by mules from Sankari's Kedarkantha Base Camp. You can also bring a mule with you to transport your belongings. A local man will accompany you, and he will be able to give you information about the trek, such as weather conditions.
Where can I buy camping gear?
All goods can be found at the Sankri bus stop and the hotel halls. You can find all the equipment and information in the small village if you ask.
Do we need to have the ration?
This winter trek is not possible to complete in just one day. Start your day with breakfast at Sankari base camp. You can speak to a trekking company if you do not have a travel package. They will be happy to book your stay and food separately. You will need first to get information and confirm at Sankari. In the cold winter, we also discovered a tea shop near Sankri and Juda Talab. There was also food and drink.
The camp had to be removed. Throughout the remainder of the season, there will be many independent shops at the base camp and the pond Juda Ka Tal. You won't need to bring your food or utensils. Uncooked food can be carried with you, as long as enough wood is available to cook it. You should also keep food with you. This includes snacks, biscuits, and chocolate. It is essential.
How to Reach Sankari
Dehradun to Sankri is reached via Budkot, Purola, and Natwad. According to my knowledge, the bus leaves Dehradun at half-past five in the morning and arrives in Sankari around 4 or 5. This bus cannot be caught by night train from Dehradun. You can catch it from the century, but you'll need to be in Dehradun.
There are two options. You can book the Max and Bolero full-time if you have 6-8 people. If you have fewer, you can choose to share Bolero or Max. You can also travel in multiple parts. You can travel to Tukdo on Dehradun-Mussoorie or Mussoorie-Naogaon, Mussoorie-Naogaon, Mussoorie-Naogaon, Naogaon-Purola, Purola-Sankari, or even a longer-range share jeep. Our car took us 12 hours to reach Sankri.
Best time to visit Kedarkantha Snow Trek
Kedarkantha can be visited 10 times per year. However, it would help if you avoided the rainy season and the month of January 15, when heavy snowfall is possible. Winter brings white snow and the chance to play in it.
Heights of various places in Kedarkantha
Sankari measures approximately 1930m, while the Juda Ka Tal is approximately 2786m. The base camp's height is 3029m, and the peak's height is 3800m.
Weather Conditions
You must have a temperature below zero from December 15 through February 15 in winter, especially at night. Average weather will still be possible if the weather is sunny and clear during the day. The rest of the day will be fine. To be in sync with the current conditions, it is recommended that one night in Sankari is stopped.

KEDARKANTHA TREK - THE THINGS THAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT This Snow Himalayan TrekKedarkantha Trek! I feel goosebumps and butterflies just thinking about the name. After much thought, I decided to embark on my first Snow Himalayan Trek. It was my 50th birthday gift. I never imagined that one day I would trek up the Himalayas. The Himalayas are more than just snow-capped mountains. They are also a place that evokes emotions. The trek was memorable because it took place at 12,500 feet above sea level. It was a beautiful journey through pine forests and breathtaking views of the Himalayan range. A layer of white snow made the trip even more special. It was something I had always hoped for, but it never came true. Just recently, I returned from a snow family vacation in Himachal Pradesh. I booked the Kedarkantha Trek without doing any research. I was able to see the videos and read a few blogs, but the Kedarkantha Trek was beyond my imagination. The 360-degree view of the snow-capped Himalayas and tall green Pine trees, snowy ascending tracks, a row of trekkers in colorful jerseys carrying their luggage, the tok-tok sound made by ponies, streams flowing through rocks with cold water, even though there was so much greenery, everything looked like a black-and-white painted landscape of a hilly area.Story of KedarkanthaKedarkantha is sometimes mistaken for Kedarnath. Talking to locals, I learned about the popular Kedarkantha story. It is a must-read for all those who want to trek Kedarkantha. Kedarkantha is the name of the place where Lord Shiva's throat (or throat) can be found. Locals believe that Lord Shiva meditated here before heading towards Kedarnath. Trek to KedarkanthaMany blogs and vlogs are available on Kedarkantha Trek, giving all the details. The trek's difficulty was a major concern of mine. The difficulty level of the trek is subjective. A great trek for beginners to kedarkantha. However, most blogs claim it to be easy. It is recommended that you have previous trekking experience. Kedarkantha, at 12500ft above sea level, is a great Himalayan Trek for beginners.Trek RouteDay 1: Dehradun to Sankri VillageThe base camp for the Kedarkantha trek is Sankri, which is approximately an 8-10 hours drive from Dehradun. After having breakfast, tea, coffee, lunch, and bio breaks, we left Dehradun at 8 a.m. We arrived in Sankri by 6 p.m. You will see the River Yamuna running through the route, bright, happy mustard fields, twists, turns, and tall pine trees as you travel. You will feel the majestic Himalayas from the route. We stopped in the middle a few times to have lunch and spent some time on the river banks. We felt like children again as we soaked our feet in the river.Sankri is a small village that grows crops for local consumption. It is located at 6000 feet above sea level and serves as the base camp for Kedarkantha Trek.SankriDay 2: Trek from Sankri, Juda ka TalaabSankri, at 6000 feet above sea level, is the starting point of the trek. After a healthy breakfast, we started our trek from Sankri at 10. The weather was pleasant, but it was sunny. The climb to Juda Ka Talaab's base camp was easy, thanks to the deodar and pine forest, muddy trails and breathtaking views of snow-clad mountains.Frozen lake, also known as Juda ka Talab, was 2700m high. It left us speechless. Juda ka Talab is surrounded by thick layers of snow and tall pine trees. This makes it a great place to take photos. Juda ka Talab is located approximately kilometers from our base camp. To reach the base camp, it took us approximately 5 hours and 5 km. We reached the base camp at 3:00 p.m. and were starving to the core. We were advised to rest and adjust to the snow and temperature. On the second day, we saw Juda Ka Talab while hiking up towards Kedarkantha Base campsite. After a hearty and filling meal, we explored the area and took pictures. Although we were exhausted at the end, we were excited to get up the next morning. It was extremely cold that night. Although it was impossible to determine the temperature, it felt like -10°C. The tent accommodation was twin/triple sharing. We had to cover ourselves with two blankets, even though they had provided them.At Juda Ka Talab campsiteDay 3 Juda ka Talaab - Kedarkantha Base CampAfter breakfast, we started our trek the next day at 9 a.m. from Juda ka Talab Base Camp. Juda ka Talab could be found just a kilometer from the base campsite towards Kedarkantha Base campsite. The trek became very difficult because it was sunny. The route becomes slippery and slushy when the sun shines. It was difficult for some of the trekkers to get their gaiters and spikes. As a result, they fell a few times. The surrounding scenery was stunning with its majestic mountains, deep snow, freshwater streams, and not-so-green tree. It was visually stunning, even though it looked all black and white. This is the most difficult point for first-timers, as it becomes steeper and more exhausting. As we got closer to the base campsite, the trek became more enjoyable. It was both a mixture of excitement and nervousness. I thought a lot about whether I would be able to do it. I also wondered if my lungs could support me (asthmatic), if my knees could support me (first snow trek at 50, no joke) and many other things. It was only 5km, and we were almost at the Kedarkantha Base campsite. It was 4 p.m. Even though we were exhausted, there was still enough light to take photos. Three times we were energized by the first glimpse of Kedarkantha Peak. The temperature began to drop. The tents were placed on the snow.Because the dinner was early, we were not allowed to take a break. So we sat around and played games, danced, sang, and did everything possible. We all got to know each other by then and started building our morale for the summit. The guides gave us a briefing about the summit trek while we ate dinner.Takeaway

What makes Kedarkantha a good trek for beginners?
24 kms 4 days. It is a beautiful area. From summit to peak
If you're a beginner, add a little courage, and it will all seem possible.
It can be scary to go on your first trek. It is easy to doubt your physical strength, mental strength, or ability to weather extremes. But, remember, every major journey starts with a single step.
"It's not the mountains ahead of you to climb that wears you out, it is the pebble in the shoe,"
A little adventure is good for the soul, and Kedarkantha is a beautiful winter trek that you can do as a beginner.
Here are the reasons.
1. It's a relaxed, easy-going trek.
Kedarkantha Trekking is fun and lighthearted. It's almost like a 4-day vacation. You can reach all the campsites in less than four hours. It gives you plenty of time to take in the sights, walk at a leisurely pace, and have fun in the snow. If the weather is bad and you are caught in a snowstorm, you can always turn around and return to Sankri in a matter of hours.
It does not mean you don't need to get up at 5 am every morning or walk uphill. In a moment, I'll get to the issues.
Take a look at the photos below. Do these trekkers appear to be on a mission, or are they exhausted or stressed?
2. The right balance of challenges
Treks can present a variety of challenges, and you will have to prove your strength. The Kedarkantha trek provides just the right amount of challenge, enough to make you feel like you can accomplish something you never dreamed possible.
How to deal with the cold
The cold is the first and most difficult challenge. It is very cold after sundown, and most of us don't like sub-zero temperatures. You might find it difficult to sleep at campsites because your hands and feet are never warm enough. Don't let this discourage you. Our bodies take time to adjust to changes. It isn't easy to take in too many things at once. It will be -15 outside, and you will be sleeping in a sleeping bag, on an inflatable mat, or inside a tent. It will feel uncomfortable at first.
Solution
Winter trekking requires you to bring the right clothing, including thermals, warm socks, and gloves, as well as waterproof shoes. It is a good idea to bring warm, water-resistant trekking pants as well as a down jacket. A hot water bottle can be carried along and kept next to your feet in your sleeping bag at night. It works like magic.
It is a strenuous climb to the summit.
The summit day is the most difficult day on the trek. It takes just 4 hours to reach the summit, but it is 4 hours of a steep climb in sub-zero temperatures. You start at 3 am. It's a blessing to start your trek at night because you don't know how steep it is or how far you have to go. Keep your feet on the ground, and you will soon be able to see the sun rising.
Solution
Keep an open mind and the determination to get there. It will be an unforgettable moment in your life to reach the summit. The sun is rising, your senses are energized, and you feel the warmth. It will be a thrilling walk back to the summit. Trekking is about teamwork, not racing. Don't be discouraged if you are slow. No one will rush you nor leave you behind. To celebrate, you can walk together and reach the summit.
3. Learn the things you will never know
The amount of information you can learn on Kedarkantha is amazing for beginners. However, you will be able to use the skills you have learned on Kedarkantha for your future treks, and you'll have some bragging rights.
It is what you'll do for the first time in your entire life.
Ascending in snow and descending:
Walking in snow is a different experience than walking in malls. The majority of Kedarkantha's route is easy because it has been open for you. But when it snows, all routes are gone. You don't know what to do? How will you walk in snow that is knee-deep? You will have to walk in deep snow as you climb up to the summit. Therefore, you must learn the proper techniques for walking the trail. Before you reach the summit, your trek leaders will show you how to find a slope that has fresh snow. It's not hard at all. It is a brand new experience for you.
How to pitch a tent
You will be able to pitch your tent like a boss if you ever plan to take a camping trip with Kedarkanth. Although it may seem unnecessary, you will always have someone pitch your tents on an organized trek. But trust me, it is a valuable skill. If I had to count how many times I have helped strangers pitch tents, especially men, I would run out of fingers. It encourages you to spend more time outdoors and go on your camping trips.
The basecamp will teach you how to pitch your tent. You will need to find a spot and thump your feet to smoothen the snow. Also, you will need to learn how to determine the direction of the wind. It's almost as if you were learning how to change your car's tires. It is very satisfying to be able to do it yourself.
Glissade in the snow
It is one of the most exciting things you can do on the trek. It brings out the child within all trekkers, and it also saves you lots of effort when you descend from the summit. You will have the opportunity to glide down the trail on many patches, but a guide or leader should always accompany you. These guides will show you how to control speed and when to stop. Do not roll down the slope and then fall off the edge. You can have all the fun you like, but safety is paramount.
4. The timing is perfect, too.
The mountains slow downtime; there are no distractions, meetings, chores, traffic, or stress. These are the main reasons it is so addictive. You will feel rejuvenated and full of energy after spending four days in the wilderness. It is also incredibly inspiring to be on such beautiful trekking trips. The trek is only four days long, making it easy for everyone to get away from work, have a bit of adventure, and then return to their lives.
These are just a few of the many reasons Kedarkantha is a wonderful trek for beginners. Register soon if you want to sign up, as the spots are limited. It would help if you also started to prepare for it. A minimum level of fitness is required before you can go on any treks.
Read up on how to prepare for a trek here.
You can let go of your worries and enjoy the mountain life. You will fall in love with the mountains, just like most people.
Happy trekking!

Kedarkantha in Spring (March-April)
In March, you will still find residual snow lingering from the winters just gone by; more on the higher altitude. It will still have the beginnings of the spring season in the form of Rhododendrons and the fresh exposed grasslands. April will be a goodbye to any snow remaining with the Spring season in full swing. A splash of colour will be there wherever you turn with a carpet of meadows especially on lower altitudes. The days will be longer and much brighter with the nights becoming more bearable. This season offers a pleasant weather for trekking amongst the beauty of the nature.
Kedarkantha in Summer (May-June)
In May, Kedarkantha sees a fairly warm morning joined by colder evenings and nights; although they are not harsh as compared to other seasons. The sun is bright on top and it could even be considered hot by a lot of people. On the other hand, June welcomes the occasional rainfall but it is rare and not very heavy. The best part about trekking at this time would be that in Summers most people go for treks with higher altitudes. This means that Kedarkantha is not really crowded and offers you enough isolation if that is that you are looking for. You will not find any snow in this season.
Kedarkantha in Autumn (September-November)
Who doesn’t like that crisp and fresh air of the winter without the terrible cold it brings along? Well, the Kedarkantha weather in autumns is much like that. Kedarkantha in Winter (December-February)
Fresh snowfall and cold days mark the entrance of the winter season in Kedarkantha. Starting at the end of December, the snow keeps falling till mid-February. Nights are terrible cold in this weather, with days offering little to no respite. But with the right layering, the winter trek becomes the most enjoyable treks of all. The best part being that mid-January to February bring little crowd, leading to a quiet and pleasant trek. During peak winters, the trail might me blocked by snowfall for 2-3 days so be ready for that. But that is all a minor convenience in the face of a blanket of beautiful snow.
