Author's note: It's been forever since I've posted an Ethan fic so I was searching for prompts to help me out of my writer's block and came across the following prompt: "I was wondering how long you two were going to make out like that before you realize you weren’t alone" and this is the result. I miss Open Heart, y'all. English is not my first language. Also, I can't pick a decent title even if my life depends on it. 

PS: This has been sitting on my drafts for weeks and after that blog post that made me lose my mind, it seemed like a good timing.

Ethan and Lexie tried to keep away from each other. They really did. For about two months, they actually managed to not run back to each other and both of them felt miserable because of it. If they weren't so committed to their jobs, it would have taken a week rather than a couple of months until they found their way into each other's arms again. They kept ending up intertwined in his office, a supply closet or even an on-call room and saying it'd be the last time. In one month, they had at least 5 encounters that were said to be "the last time". After a while they stopped lying to themselves and simply fully gave in to their feelings. 

He was still her boss, though, so they had to be careful with their relationship. Keeping it a secret was not ideal and not what they wanted, because honestly neither of them were ashamed or thought they had something that had to be hidden, but their coworkers might not think the same- especially now that Ethan was working as her direct supervisor. Lexie's roommates kind of knew about them, but they pretended they didn't; they didn't really say anything after that awkward moment when they ran into Ethan sneaking out of their apartament the morning after the hearing and Lexie wouldn't be the one to bring it up. All of them- Ethan, Lexie, her roommates- pretended nothing had happened. 

But then the two of them got together again and it felt painfully hard to pretend nothing was going on.  

Ethan used to despise those doctors who couldn't keep their personal life away from work; even when he dated Harper, none of their coworkers knew because they acted like professionals within the hospital walls. Even the thought of hooking up inside the hospital used to make him almost physically sick- how could these doctors not show one bit of self control at work? But with Lexie, it was pathetically easy for him to forget what self control was. They spent so much time apart that when they finally did get together again, it was like something lit up inside of him: he couldn't get enough of her once all of those feelings that had been eating him alive- need, longing, passion- were finally released. And even the smallest thing was enough to light up the fire inside of him. One stole glance during rounds, or an "accidental" touch while they were working with the diagnosis team was enough to distract him for the rest of the day- and then he wasn't able to think about anything else at all until he could get her alone. 

On the middle of a particular crazy shift, after he had spent all day thinking about the little glance she had given him during rounds followed by the smallest lip bite, he ran into her just outside an on-call room and he had no choice but to take her inside before she could say anything. He immediately locked the door and pushed her against it, kissing her in a way that made her knees weak.

"Dr. Ramsey, what was that for?" she asked him with a mischievous glint on her eyes, a little breathless with her arms still around his neck. He looked at her with so much intensity that she thought she would melt.

"I have been thinking about you all day, Lexie. I couldn't wait to get my hands on you" he said, leaning down to kiss her neck. She let out a soft gasp, tenderly threading her fingers through the soft hair on the back of his head.  

"Well, this is way more fun than running labs, so please carry on" she pulled him to her lips again, moaning quietly into his mouth as his hands explored her back underneath her scrubs, his touch setting her skin on fire.

Their kisses grew more heated and passionate as they both stumbled across the room until the back of her knees hit one of the bunk beds and she fell down with a loud thud, pulling him on top of her. Their mouths didn’t part as Lexie pushed his white coat over his shoulders to the floor.

They kept kissing urgently on the small bed as their hands explore each other's bodies, but just as Ethan reached to pull her scrub top over her head, they were interrupted by the beep of a pager.

"Ughhh" she groaned as she reached to check her device "It's not mine" 

He kissed her jaw and picked up his pager from where it was tossed on the floor, somewhere inside the pocket of his white coat.

"It's not mine either."

"What?"

"Uh, actually, it's mine" they heard a voice above them. Fuck.

Ethan and Lexie just looked at each other and froze, not sure about what to do- not sure if there was anything they could do at this point. Just then, they felt someone moving on the bed above them and watched, petrified, as Bryce climbed out of the bunk bed and looked at them with a smirk on his face.

"I was wondering how long you two were going to make out like that before you realize you weren’t alone" he said, picking up his stethoscope and hanging it around his neck.  

Lexie was the first to break out of their shocked state- she gently created some distance between her and Ethan, pointlessly trying to regain some of her dignity. She could feel her face burning and couldn't bring herself to look at Bryce's face- he didn't even have to say anything to tease her, just one look would be enough to let her know he would never ever let her forget about this.

"Bryce, I'm so sorry, we obviously thought we were alone in here and we know on-call rooms are for sleeping and not for- well, you know- but..." Lexie finally met his eyes as she desperately tried to explain herself but the surgeon cut her off, holding his hands up in mocking defense.

"Hey, relax. I don't care about what you do in here. I mean, I've definitely thought about pushing a certain hot paramedic inside an on-call room more than once, so no judgment. Let me just grab my stuff and I'll be out of here in a second and you can get back at it" he said with a bright smile, trying to ease the tension. Ethan had not said a word this whole time- he looked like he wanted to bury himself in the floor or punch Bryce but wasn't sure about which one he should do first. Instead, he cleared his throat.

"Uh, Dr. Lahela isn't it?" Ethan asked, his voice not as firm as it usually was. Bryce noded, trying as hard as he could to keep a straight face. "I would appreciate if you didn't mention what you saw here to anyone. Given our situation, I'm sure you can understand a need for some, uh, discretion"

"Don't worry, your secret is safe with me. Next time, just make sure you're alone." he said and then smirked at the two flustered doctors, deciding to tease them just a bit more "Or, you know, you could ask me to join you, you two look hot together."

Ethan mouth hang open in shock as Bryce winked at them.

“Okay Bryce, time to leave. Don’t you have someone to cut open right now?” Lexie jumped off the bed and practically shoved a laughing Bryce out of the room, her face impossibly red.

Once he was out of the room, she shut and locked the door behind her with a heavy sigh. Ethan buried his face on his hands and groaned.

She opened her eyes and looked at Ethan- who seemed at least as flustered as she felt- and as their eyes met, they both burst out laughing. Out of breath, she closed the distance between them and sat by his side on the bed, still laughing. He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her closer, smiling.

"I don't think I'll ever be able to look into Dr. Lahela's face again" Ethan said while he laid down and pulled her to lay with him, arms around each other. She turned on her stomach and rested her chin on his chest, looking up at him. As his blue eyes stared into hers, she decided to take a risk.

"Maybe we should tell people about us, Ethan. What happened today would be uncomfortable no matter what, but we were lucky it was only Bryce here. What if it had been someone else? Someone who might not had taken it as easily as he did? Maybe we should come clean before anyone uses it against us. If we really have nothing to hide, why are we keeping it a secret, you know?" Lexie tried to read his face but he was as stoic as ever. Her emotional side wanted to scream at the top of her lungs that she and Ethan were in a relationship, but her rational side knew it was better to keep it low for as long as they could. It was delusional to think that everyone would take it as smoothly as Bryce did- and being a female resident in a relationship with an attending, she knew they would come for her, not him. But as she looked deeply into his eyes, she realized she didn’t give a shit about what other people could say or think.

“You’re right. Are you sure that’s what you want?” he asked, gently pushing her dark bangs off her face. He knew it as well as she did that their relationship could negatively affect her career and reputation more than his, and he would never forgive himself if their relationship was the reason why she had a future and career anything less than extraordinary. She smiled and took his hand on hers, bringing it to her lips and kissing it with a soft glow on her eyes.

“Yeah, I’m sure” I’m ready to tell the world you’re mine.

He gave her a rare, true smile- one of those that could light up even her darkest moments, that made her sure they could get through this as long as they had each other’s backs. She couldn’t help but smile with him as he pulled her face to his, kissing her deeply.

It didn’t take long until the kiss grew more heated, and soon enough her hands found their way to the buttons of his shirt.

“We can tell people later, don't you think?" she said, kissing his neck. He mumbled an agreement and pulled her to straddle his lap, running his hand through the side of her body. She smirked and unbuttoned his shirt slowly. "Now, where were we before we got interrupted?"

Just like that, Bryce’s interruption was quickly forgotten and they went back to do what they originally went to on-call room for.

Idk what that double underhooked move was by Peyton, but it was nice.

What bothers me about Peyton’s spinning heel kick, is as high as she gets it, she only hits people with her calf. Awkward to see.

Lol I love KLR so much. Just ducks out of the ring the first time she’s bested.

“KLR is well versed in mental manipulation,” that she is. She’s honestly a top competitor in that sense; equal to the likes of Sasha and Charlotte when it comes to psychology.

That’s right, performing with Charlotte Flair at wm is an accolade one can only hope to achieve (I’m annoying I know) no but seriously, KLR vs Becky Lynch? Take my money.

That senton was awkward and looked painful af for KLR’s neck. If you’re gonna risk that move while selling a leg injury, make sure you have more space to correct your landing.

I almost wish that turnbuckle came undone naturally because KLR is already such a good seller, but I’m gonna assume this is a worked move since it’s been left exposed.

Yeah see there are issues with that spot. Positives: KLR didn’t purposefully undo the turnbuckle, so it’s not on her to give another title match; the spot has potential, as I’m guessing that would be genuinely painful. Negatives: Piper is too big of a woman to hit the lower turnbuckle doing the cannonball, so she ended up hitting the middle... which was padded. Good ending on paper if you don’t do the equations, but poor execution. Not Piper nor KLR’s fault though.

Slow pacing and I hate overbooked garbage, but this obviously isn’t the only match they’re having so *shrug*

A problem I consistently have with SD in particular is how they set up commercial breaks. They always do something dramatic, cut to commercial, come back and shit’s always completely different. How you gonna cut from Alexa leading and hearing the Fiend’s laugh, to return to Lacey in charge ???

Zelina telegraphs too much. None of the bumps she takes ever catch me by surprise.

Every week it’s the same shit with Asuka. She gets on the mic, speaks Japanese, barely accomplishes anything, then gets interrupted/slapped/attacked... with dancing and smiling inbetween. I really wish she was more like Io.

Nikki isn’t “medically cleared to compete”, and the tag team titles aren’t being defended. My memory is fuzzy but wasn’t there some covid concerns going around back then? Was that just baseless speculation?

Love that Bayley turned this into an opportunity to be a bigger douche than she already was lol.

like 20 seconds into the match and it’s already 10x better than the Bianca vs Billie Kay one. Don’t even waste a spot on Main Event for Billie Kay. No, I’m not not sorry for saying that.

It’s not that I hold issue with Bianca’s showboating or mannerisms, but it’s all so much more fitting for a heel.

Beautiful stalling suplex, but Liv is rather small.

Beautiful distance on that dropkick to Liv. Liv gets points for throwing herself so far.

We have enough women who rip their shirts off deep into matches, me thinks. Don’t need it from Liv as well.

Momentum could’ve been split better, but that was a decent match.

I think this has been here for like five days I have been so tired but alright! All rambly and ready to write.

1. What’s the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do?

For someone who complains so much about being inconvenienced, they sure get restless. Just in terms of hours or something they can keep to themself just fine for a while. If they’re in civilization they can just spend time reading mystery novels or magical theory in their spare time. (If they’re not in civilization then they will always have something to do, it’s called “finish whatever the fuck I came out here to do and go the fuck home.”) In a broader sense, I don’t think they could spend more than a few months without anything really interesting going on in their life. After long enough they’ll inevitably start seeking out trouble. In Grenadin they had a fairly nice peaceful living and that was good and all but they weren’t stimulated enough so they went and learned magic in their spare time and that still wasn’t enough so lied to everyone and took up a role as a detective solving mysteries and shit. All this conspiracy stuff, while it’s making them panic hard, is kind of a breath of fresh air in another sense.

3. How do they put themselves to bed at night (reading, singing, thinking?)

When at their flat they have some books so they can read themself to sleep. Although I actually think that when they want to sleep they can do it pretty quickly just by trying (can’t relate.) As for their actual routine, when they’re with the party it involves doing as little as possible, especially if there are small chores that can be left to someone else. At home though I think that every night they clean their room, wash their face, clean their sheets (not actually that hard with magic), and slightly re-organize everything in their flat just to wind down. Every single night, barring unusual exhaustion. They can get pretty restless when surrounded by a relatively peaceful setting.

4. How easy is it to earn their trust?

Trust for them is...I dunno. Kayden tends not to trust very many people in the sense of “I have faith in you, I know that whatever happens you’ll pull through, you would never betray me” kind of thing. They do (or did haha) have a couple people like that, but they don’t rely on them for anything and probably never will. Kayden is inclined not to trust many people in that traditional sense, and any real bonds of faith that might be associated with such a relationship tend to take years to form. Shared struggle is a big aspect of that, so they might trust their party members sooner than that, but so is shared ideals or ends, and they’re not sure they have that.

With that being said, Kayden places great trust in what they know about people. They will observe what they can about someone and then trust that person to act in line with what they’ve seen. For instance, just as a very basic example, their impression of Hinik is that he’s very strong physically but less adept in any situations that rely on subtlety. Therefore, Kayden will fully trust him to take care of a situation where someone is violently attacking them but will probably not trust him to explain to the authorities what just went down. Then again, there’s also placing trust in his lack of subtlety, which historically has more or less resulted in Kayden throwing him under the bridge because they trust he’ll be enough of a distraction that they can just leave. In this sort of sense, they are actually very trusting, but it’s honestly a pretty manipulative sense-or that’s just what party members do for each other, up to you to decide. They’re constantly reevaluating people around them. Another example of this is that before they probably would have trusted Killian if they needed help in a pinch not because they “trust him” but because they know he’s prone to selflessness and helpfulness and they can use that. However recent events have shown that Killian is not only like this to those he has personal relationships with but with most people, which they did not know. Now they’re more wary about trusting those aspects of him because he could just as easily help their enemy as help them.

Currently their trust in others is also motivated by circumstance and necessity. “We’re all in the same boat so even if you aren’t the best people for it, I need to work with you all to uncover this dimensional conspiracy bullshit because you’re the only other people who know about it.”

Wow that was long.

13. What color do they think they look best in? Do they actually look best in that color?

They obviously think they look best in blue. They tend to wear brown and peacock because that’s just a really nice and underrated color scheme, but if they actually want to look fancy their color of choice is a deep royal blue, maybe with silver embellishments (although they prefer warmer colors than silver normally.) As for me, I always thought they’d really pull off red or pink. I like to picture them in a casual pink sundress or something like that for a softer look but I really can’t see any pink outfit where shoulder-legnth gloves would work. I also can’t see them in pink for any sort of setting other than casual, which is why I’d also recommend red for them. A red tunic to replace their blue one for physically active situations and in formal settings it’d be great for both ballgowns and tailcoats. My only thing about red is that while it would look good on them it’s also a significantly more eye-catching color than they would prefer. Obviously they like to look fashionable, but that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone becoming aware of you the moment you enter a room.

27. What causes them to feel dread? 

Everything. Mentions of their personal life, that cute little gang based in Lockwood, this whole fucking magical memory realm, the sink orbs, institutions, the past, the future, right now especially the present, the thought of losing their memories, the thought of a wizard conspiracy fucking up the world, their deadname, a lot of other things probably I dunno.

29. Do they usually live up to their own ideals? 

Oooooh, that’s a hard no. Kayden has this little character flaw and it’s called they tend to use other people as means to an end. Kayden knows what a good person is. They know how being one works and they have a sense of right and wrong. They don’t really apply many of these standards of how one should act to themself. They don’t go around needlessly making others’ lives harder for kicks. They’ll keep secrets, do favors, pull others out of tough situations, and negotiate on the behalf of others. However if they were ever forced to choose between sacrificing their ends and throwing the people around them under the bus, they’d do the latter in a heartbeat. I don’t think that their ends are necessarily bad-for instance one of their current goals is finding a way to restore the memories of the children in Thornhill. With that goal in mind, it’s easy to see that they don’t give two shits about what happens to Shane. I think hypocrisy comes in that if anyone ever betrayed or inhibit Kayden like they’re willing to do to others, they would probably find it unforgivable, even if the motives were considerably more noble or utilitarian. Kayden’s focus is usually not the greater good (although right now it might be just because the world might be at stake), their focus is a set of personal goals. These goals might not be bad, many might even be selfless in nature, but I don’t think they’re any bigger or more important than the goals that the other people around them might have. Kayden doesn’t really expect or demand that others prioritize their needs, but they have no qualms about manipulating them into doing that.

39. How easy is it for them to ignore flaws in other people? 

They never ignore them. If they see a flaw then they will try to be aware of it and of any situation that might come up surrounding it. They judge flaws based on how much danger they put everyone else in and based on personal distaste. For instance they don’t see Hinik’s violent tendencies as morally wrong (when targeted at someone else) but rather as a liability. The tactical sense is the most important one for how Kayden perceives the flaws of others. Aster’s devotion on the other hand is not something that most people would blink at, but Kayden considers it a flaw because of their own opinions on religion. Other things in this category would be behaviors that aren’t inherently bad really but are really fucking annoying. Beyond that, they are pretty forgiving of flaws. I wouldn’t say they ignore them, but they acknowledge that they’re not really the kind of person who can pass judgement. They’ll still complain though, see there’s another instance of them not living up to their own ideals.

42. How badly do they want to reach their end goal?

More than anything. Unfortunately their goal isn’t really something that they can just accomplish, rather it’s something that they need to be constantly upkeeping. I guess their end goal would be enough stability in life that they didn’t need to worry anymore, but their nature is pretty counter to finding satisfaction and settling down.
