Eco-friendly nanofibrous cellulose matrix has diverse applications ranging from textiles to medical devices
The efficient use of cellulose—the primary plant scaffold and a major natural building block—could address many issues associated with petroleum-based polymers across various industries. In the search for more sustainable uses of cellulose, Lithuanian scientists have developed a production method for a nanofibrous cellulose matrix, which has the potential to replace non-renewable industrial even in biomedical applications. Textile, clothing, toys, and sports equipment made from synthetic petroleum-based materials have a significant negative impact on the environment through their entire life cycle, from production to waste management. Scientists argue that it is necessary to replace petroleum-based materials with environmentally friendly materials and to demonstrate to consumers that products that have been in use for many years can be replaced while retaining their effectiveness. According to Ingrida Pauliukaitytė, a Ph.D. student at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and one of the creators of the new environmentally friendly cellulose nanofiber, the invention is a step towards a more sustainable industry.

Read the full article

Chemists at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania have synthesised materials that can improve solar elements for indoor use. Such photovoltaic cells, which can also be integrated into various electronic devices, generate electricity even in low-light conditions. Consumption of oil and gas results in the increase of atmospheric temperatures, leading to global climate change, currently labelled a climate crisis. To combat this problem, efforts are being made to use renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources such as wind, water and solar power. "Wind and hydro energy are constrained by high costs and location dependency, while solar energy is flexible, efficient and relatively inexpensive. However, the energy from indoor light sources and natural light entering through windows is lost every day," says Juozas Vidas Gražulevičius, Professor at the KTU Faculty of Chemical Technology and Head of the Chemistry of Materials research group.

Altered speech may be the first sign of Parkinsons disease
Lithuanian researcher from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Rytis Maskeliūnas, together with colleagues from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), tried to identify early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease using voice data. Parkinson’s disease is usually associated with loss of motor function — hand tremors, muscle stiffness, or balance problems. According to Maskeliūnas, a researcher at KTU’s Department of Multimedia Engineering, as motor activity decreases, so does the function of the vocal cords, diaphragm, and lungs: “Changes in speech often occur even earlier than motor function disorders, which is why the altered speech might be the first sign of the disease.” Expanding the AI language database According to Professor Virgilijus Ulozas, at the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat at the LSMU Faculty of Medicine, patients with early-stage of Parkinson’s disease, might speak in a quieter manner, which can also be monotonous, less expressive, slower, and more fragmented, and this is very difficult to notice by ear. As the disease progresses, hoarseness, stuttering, slurred pronunciation of words, and loss of pauses between words can become more apparent. Taking these symptoms into account, a joint team of Lithuanian researchers has developed a system to detect the disease earlier. “We are not creating a substitute for a routine examination of the patient — our method is designed to facilitate early diagnosis of the disease and to track the effectiveness of treatment,” says KTU researcher Maskeliūnas. According to him, the link between Parkinson’s disease and speech abnormalities is not new to the world of digital signal analysis — it has been known and researched since the 1960s. However, as technology advances, it is becoming possible to extract more information from speech. In their study, the researchers used artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse and assess speech signals, where calculations are done and diagnoses made in seconds rather than hours. This study is also unique — the results are tailored to the specifics of the Lithuanian language, in this way expanding the AI language database. The algorithm will become a mobile app in the future Speaking about the progress of the study, Kipras Pribuišis, lecturer at the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat at the LSMU Faculty of Medicine, emphasises that it was only carried out on patients already diagnosed with Parkinson’s: “So far, our approach is able to distinguish Parkinson’s from healthy people using a speech sample. This algorithm is also more accurate than previously proposed.” In a soundproof booth, a microphone was used to record the speech of healthy and Parkinson’s patients, and an artificial intelligence algorithm “learned” to perform signal processing by evaluating these recordings. The researchers highlight that the algorithm does not require powerful hardware and could be transferred to a mobile app in the future. “Our results, which have already been published, have a very high scientific potential. Sure, there is still a long and challenging way to go before it can be applied in everyday clinical practice,” says Maskeliūnas. According to the researcher, the next steps include increasing the number of patients to gather more data and determining whether the proposed algorithm is superior to alternative methods used for early diagnosis of Parkinson’s. In addition, it will be necessary to check whether the algorithm works well not only in laboratory-like environments but also in the doctor’s office or in the patient’s home.

10 Innovations Happening in the Plastics Industry Right Now In 2023
The plastics industry is continually changing and developing fresh, original concepts for recycled plastics and other products. Discover some of the most recent developments taking place right now in the plastics sector by reading on.
New in 2023
Check them out along with the earlier advancements that are set to keep causing waves in the business as we've updated our list with some exciting breakthroughs that have happened in 2023.
1. Microorganisms that can degrade plastics
Ideonella sakaiensis, a bacteria first identified in 2005, has now been demonstrated to eat PET film with a thickness of 0.2 millimetres in around a month, according to a recent article in Asahi Shimbun.
This discovery could have a significant impact on the future of plastics industry recycling and disposal, as PET had previously been thought to be nonbiodegradable due to its petroleum-based origin.
2. Bioplastics for Biodegradable Food Packaging
The interesting field of bioplastics has produced yet another fascinating discovery. Scientists at Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania have developed a biodegradable plastic that may break down in a compost bin in two years, according to a recent report from Phys.org.
Once this information is made available in plastics industry, it can be used for a variety of things, such as single-use packaging for goods, an alternative to plastic shopping and storage bags, and more.
The fact that the substance the scientists were using, cellulose, needed to be able to be rendered transparent or semi-transparent to match contemporary plastic packaging items, was one of the obstacles they faced. For these purposes, fluid plastic is created by heating normal plastic, however heating cellulose usually results in burning.
3. Toothpaste tubes that can be fully recycled
Colgate, a well-known company, has introduced a recyclable toothpaste tube that is the first to be recognised by the Association of plastics industry Recyclers as part of their effort to support the green movement.
According to plastics industry Today, conventional toothpaste tubes frequently cannot be recycled because they contain a thin coating of aluminium on top of the plastic that makes up the rest of the tube.
However, the material utilised to make this new tube is high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is frequently used to make plastics industry bottles. Colgate's team had to try a range of layering and composite possibilities before getting the correct malleability required for squeezable toothpaste tubes.
4. Plastic Braces 3D Printed
While plastics industry solutions for braces, such as Invisalign, have been available for some time, you might be able to save some serious cash by printing your own plastic braces at home!
Recently, an undergrad at the New Jersey Institute of Technology decided to create his own pair of braces by 3d printing them for just $60!
5. Shelter using Plastics
The use of recycled plastic in an unconventional construction project is one of the most intriguing modern uses of plastic. A bus stop hub was recently constructed in Hyderabad's Swaroopnagar area using 1,000 plastic water bottles by a social plastics industry company called Bamboo House India.
The bus stop was constructed in just 15 days and currently stands 8 feet tall thanks to its main metal frame and more than 1,000 used plastic bottles. The plastics industry has ambitions to develop a "permanent recycled bus shelter" in the future, but due to the bad weather in the area, they are aware that it might not withstand strong storms.
