This week's newsletter from AthensLive is out:
Being murdered while having a drink
Everybody saw them, but the Greek Police
‘Silver alert’ for the Greek PM
It seems no week lacks grim news in this country - not even in August. On Monday night, 29-year-old AEK football team supporter Michalis Katsouris was murdered by Croatian neonazi hooligans of Dinamo Zagreb who arrived in the country despite UEFA’s ban and multiple official warnings to the Greek police.
Neighboring countries informed the Greek authorities of the hooligans crossing into Greece, with Montenegro giving even plate numbers. The Greek Sports Violence Department and even public transportation officers warned them. Yet, the Greek police ‘lost track’ of the 150-200 people convoy, and they did not arrive on the spot until after the hooligans attacked bystanders and murdered Katsouris.
The PM had not made a single relevant statement until Friday evening. The government tries to shake off all political responsibility by blaming the fiasco solely on the police.
No one feels safe in this country anymore.

This week's newsletter from AthensLive is out:
Can these authorities fight football violence since they even refrain from calling things by name?
How objective can the EU Commission President be?
A non-exotic traffic jam under the Greek sun
The Greek PM finally spoke of football fan Michalis Katsouris' murder by Croatian neonazi hooligans. Only he did not mention once they were neonazis. “They killed him over football,” Greek mainstream media had said back in 2013 in those shocking first hours after the murder of antifascist musician Pavlos Fyssas by the Golden Dawn.
How legit is it for the President of the European Commission to be hosted by the Greek PM for her vacation in the country since the ND government has been connected with pushbacks and the wiretapping scandal? How objective can she be?
Finally, Greek citizens were trapped for hours under some 38 degrees Celcius on the Korinth-Athens highway after a tank truck caught fire. No emergency plans on Greek roads. Luckily, there were no victims.

[ad_1] ATHENS: UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin on Wednesday (Aug 16) urged European football to "eliminate the cancer" of hooliganism. Ceferin was speaking in Athens in the wake of last week's fatal stabbing of a fan ahead of a Champions League qualifier. "The problem of violence and hooliganism is not just Greek, it is European," he told a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. "I call on everyone at a European level to eliminate this cancer", he added. AEK Athens fan Michalis Katsouris, 29, died after being stabbed during violent clashes on the eve of Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb's qualifier at AEK near the Greek club's stadium in Nea Filadelfia, a western suburb of Athens. Last Tuesday's match was then postponed by UEFA until Aug 19. "We will do everything in our power to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again," said Ceferin. On Sunday, the Greek courts charged 105 people with involvement in the incidents and remanded them in custody. The accused include 102 Croatians, suspected of being linked to the Bad Blue Boys, a Dinamo Zagreb ultra group. "The guilty parties will be found and punished for this murder," said the Greek prime minister, who also called for a "European mechanism to tackle violence in stadiums and punish it effectively". Mitsotakis also emphasised that he had agreed with the four chairmen of the main Greek clubs that "the police should operate in the stadiums and be able to control entry". "But violence is not just in the stadiums, it is also on the streets, and we need to fight it collectively", he added. [ad_2]
