Hosokawa Gracia: The Woman who lost Mitsunari his War
But did she? (This post will be getting updates and changes in the future)
Who was Gracia? Well, she was a daughter, a wife, a mother and a Christian.
In terms of her character in Samurai Warriors I think I might have liked her quite a lot in earlier games but her portrayal in Samurai Warriors four just disturbs me. She’s too childlike for me, it doesn’t quite hit the levels of the Qiaos but it’s still disturbing. If they keep her like this then I hope they never, ever add Hosokawa Tadaoki…I’d like to think that they couldn’t add him for any feasible reason. I do like her design but I’m thrown off by her character, I understand they need to make her look younger than Mitsuhide who they’ve really aged down from his fifties to absolutely no more than 30-35 but still. I like her dress though, even if that doesn’t help in her appearing too childlike.
The real Gracia was born Akechi Tama in 1563 – another thing about making her so young, she’s only a few years younger than Mitsunari and the bulk of the cast…for gods sake she’s older than Yukimura and he’s the poster boy. Sorry. I’ll stop. Anyway, she was the 3rd daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide and his wife, Tsumaki Hiroko – who are literally the most romantic couple ever honestly they hurt my feelings.
At sixteen (1579) she was married to Hosokawa Tadaoki and would remain so until her death. There was a gap so to speak, she was kept confined upon her Father’s rebellion but she was released and taken back by Tadaoki at the intervention of HIdeyoshi. The couple had 3 sons and 2 daughters together and are ancestors of the current lineage of the Imperial family.
Gracia’s involvement in Christianity began in the late 1580s and into the 1590s, pursuing it largely while her husband was fighting in Korea. It’s said to have begun because one of her maids was Christian (perhaps drawing a link between her and Konishi? That was the kind of thing he was involved in) and her husband was also friends with Takayama Ukon. This continuous exposure to the faith gained her interest and she was able to (secretly) visit the Osaka Church in 1587 and was eventually baptised “Gracia” or Garasha to better fit Japanese pronunciation.
It’s also important to note that her husband, Hosokawa Tadaoki, was a little bit…crazy? I’m going with crazy. He was known for getting into regular disputes with his father and, according to Gracia, he killed at least one maid. He also would not allow Gracia to leave, hence why she had to visit the church secretly and she was never properly baptised – it was done by a servant girl reading from texts given to her by Jesuits.
Really, the reason we remember her and she is so famous is her death. Yep, one of those. People really like to say that her death is the reason the Mitsunari lost Sekigahara – it cost him allies. There’s an immediate problem with this which I’m going to go into great depth about.
Mitsunari wasn’t at Osaka for at least a week and a half (I might not be remembering that correctly) after Gracia died and if it was his men that were surrounding the Hosokawa mansion then he would be in way too deep. It would be considered a rebellion. It can’t be attributed to his brother either – Masazumi had even less power than Mitsunari and him raising troops was (aside from being out of his power sphere) even worse.
That’s not to say that Mitsunari wasn’t involved, he probably was – it was just the case he didn’t have the power to do it. Therefore, it’s easy to attribute the actual order to the Three Bugyo – although there’s no saying it wasn’t his idea either. The impression that it was Mitsunari (or at least, his soldiers) comes from a recount of the event by one of the maids many years later who names the soldiers as his men, due to translation and changes and all sorts it’s just been whittled down to Mitsunari. On top of this the account was written when “Mitsunari is evil” was big for Tokugawa and politics did what it could to dictate that the now long dead Mitsunari would become a villain forever more.
So, in short he was involved? Probably but it wasn’t him ordering people to do it, at least not directly.
But did it lose him his war? Well…yes, kind of. In a sense that it backfired on him and the Bugyo and whoever came up with the idea.
Because Gracia died she’s typically the only one addressed in English translations but she was definitely not the only hostage. She was just the only one who died. Ikeda Terumasa, Todo Takatora, Arima Toyoji and Kato Yoshiaki’s wives were all kept in the main keep of Osaka while the Sanada wives were kept by Otani Yoshitsugu – makes sense considering Yukimura’s wife was his daughter…sister…relative. They were related in some way either by birth or adoption. The Kuroda women and Kiyomasa’s wife escaped before anything could really go down.
The wives of Western Daimyo weren’t taken hostage in general but the Sanada wives were. I mean, on the other hand that throws into question just how loyal the Sanada were…though Nobuyuki being on Tokugawa’s side was probably enough to cause suspicion. There’s so many questions you can ask about this entire thing if I’m honest. I don’t have a comprehensive list (if one even exists) of the women who were taken hostage.
Regardless of how much they trusted the Sanada, the fact is that it didn’t really do anything. None of the hostage’s respective husbands switched sides. It probably made them more adamant on fighting the Western army and winning, going along the lines of a “Take my lady and I’ll kick your ass” kind of mindset.
Back to Gracia, she died on 17th July 1600 at the age of 37. While Japanese sources dictate that she died by her own hand, this is largely ignored as Christianity does not allow this. It’s more likely that she died at the hands of a retainer on her own (or possibly Tadaoki’s) orders after ordering her servants and others to leave. The mansion was burnt down, the retainer who had killed her – Ogasawara Shousai – committing suicide after lighting it on fire.
Hosokawa Gracia had made herself into Sekigahara’s martyr. She may well not have lost Mitsunari his war (which was hardly just his war) but she certainly lost him centuries of any kind word being said.

Sentai Filmworks to Debut 'Revue Starlight' Sequel Film in Theaters This Summer
On April 21, Sentai Filmworks announced that it will debut Revue Starlight The Movie (Gekijōban Shōjo☆Kageki Revyuu Sutāraito) in North American Theaters this June. The film is a follow-up to the 2018 television anime series of the same name.
A sneak-peak premiere will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022, at Anime Central. Afterward, the anime will be screened in select theaters nationwide on June 5, with an encore presentation on June 6.
Sentai Filmworks describes the movie:
Revue Starlight The Movie picks up soon after the series left off and opens the curtain a new, original story set during Karen Aijo and Hikari Kagura’s third year at Seisho Music Academy, a performing arts school for young women who aspire to the heights of on-stage stardom. In the next chapter of their theatrical lives, these young women will face one another on the battlefield of the stage, where song, dance and thrilling swordplay collide to illustrate the rich emotional narratives of the film’s protagonists. Fans of Revue Starlight won’t want to miss the next chapter of Karen and Hikari’s story, which brings to life even more of the high-flying musical numbers and rich emotionality of the beloved original series.
The film is animated by Kinema Citrus (Made in Abyss). It is directed by Tomohiro Furuwara, who helmed the Review Starlight anime series. Returning composers Tatsuya Kato (Love Live! Sunshine!!) and Yoshiaki Fujisawa create the film’s musical score.
Revue Starlight The Movie was initially released in Japan on June 4, 2021. It is the second film in the franchise. The first, Rando Rando Rando tells an abridged version of the television anime's story.

I’M STANDING ON A MILLION LIVES (Stagione 2)
L’adattamento è diretto da Kumiko Habara (assistente di regia in Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion) presso lo studio MAHO FILM (If It’s for My Daughter I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord, By the Grace of the Gods). La sceneggiatura è supervisionata da Takao Yoshioka (High School DxD, Bugie d’aprile), mentre il design dei personaggi è curato da Kaho Deguchi (By the Grace of the Gods), Eri Kojima (I’m standing on 1,000,000 lives) e Toshihide Masudate (In Another World With My Smartphone)

Let’s go surfing!!, Heaven’s Design Team) è diretto da Shigeru Ueda (Senran Kagura Estival Versus) e sceneggiato da Keiichiro Ochi (The Quintessential Quintuplets, Hinamatsuri). THE AQUATOPE ON WHITE SAND
Nuova serie originale dello studio P.A. WORKS (Iroduku: The World in Colors, Nagi no Asu kara, Shirobako, Appare-Ranman!) all’insegna dello slice of life.
L’anime è diretto da Toshiya Shinohara (Iroduku: The World in Colors, Nagi no Asu kara) e sceneggiato da Yuuko Kakihara (Tsuki ga Kirei, Iroduku: The World in Colors), mentre il character design è ad opera di Yuki Akiyama (Iroduku: The World in Colors) e si basa su quello concepito da U35 (Lapis Re:LiGHTs, Magia Record Puella Magi Madoka Magica Gaiden Another Story). The World in Colors, Nagi no Asu kara, Flying Witch).

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐STAGE 71: Games Of 2020⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Last year may not have gone down as one of the best years we had, if anything, comparing it to a dumpster fire wouldn’t be too far off .
In a year where so many things went wrong, video games were pretty much one of the very few Highlights that stood out in 2020.
The ability to spend hours disappearing into a beautiful world like those in the far away islands of Animal Crossing, the competitive but fun gameshow aesthetic of Fall Guys or revisiting old friends in the land of Midgar was a much welcomed breather that we all needed.
These video games provided the much needed distractions from everything else happening in the world, by enabling us to visit far away places filled with hours upon hours of entertainment, colorful, unique and intriguing characters …and most of all amazing music.

Ban the Man
Kato Yoshiaki had 3,000 troops at Sekigahara. Known as one of the "Seven Spears Of Shizugatake," Kato Yoshiaki's frontline ashigaru spear-men were sent in ahead of Yoshiaki's famed crack gunners under the command of Ban Danemon. However the matchlock corps’ efficiency was fast quelled by the fact that they were soon made leaderless: it was not that Ban was killed, but that in all the excitement and in an effort to gain personal glory, Ban Danemon had grabbed a spear and run off alone into the thick of the battle, leaving his teppotai (marksmen) without a captain. His abandonment of the marksmen brigade rendered them virtually impotent, a situation which greatly angered Yoshiaki. After Sekigahara, Danemon was called before his lord and reprimanded. Not liking his terms of punishment, he ran away from Yoshiaki's castle, but not before writing a letter and posting it to the castle gates. It read: "I, Ban Danemon, a hero of the Sekigahara campaign, hereby resign myself from the employ of the fool Lord Kato, who failed to distinguish himself in the great battle because he lacked leadership qualities." Ban Danemon then joined the army of Kobayakawa Hideaki, and upon the death of that young lord, the forces of Matsudaira Tadayoshi. Tadayoshi passed away in 1607, so Danemon joined Fukushima Masanori. When Kato Yoshiaki discovered Danemon was working for Masanori, he asked for the head of his former captain. Danemon somehow escaped the death penalty and at the Winter Siege of Osaka in 1614, he achieved renown on the night of February 2. At 2 a.m. he took his small band of 20 troops and attacked the camp of Hachisuka Yoshishige, taking the head of a high-ranking general while he slept. Danemon was richly rewarded for his efforts, and had wooden plaques, on which his name was inscribed distributed to remind people of his deeds. The following year, 1615, during the Summer Campaign on Osaka Castle, Ban Danemon was in command of an army of 3,000. Stationed beside the troops of one Okabe Noritsuna, Danemon was horrified to discover the Okabe troops pull out one morning and begin an advance before he was able to rouse his men. In an effort to be the first into battle, Danemon ran ahead alone, caught up with Okabe, challenged his ally to a fight, physically beat the man, and then ran ahead to be the first to engage the enemy. Having left his 3,000 troops behind, the maverick Ban Danemon then realized he faced the countless enemy alone, and was soon overwhelmed and killed.

Japanese Owner Of Wakashio Oil Spill Ship Continues To Hide Behind Corporate Secrecy
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/japanese-owner-of-wakashio-oil-spill-ship-continues-to-hide-behind-corporate-secrecy/
Japanese Owner Of Wakashio Oil Spill Ship Continues To Hide Behind Corporate Secrecy
Four months on, and despite the rear of the Wakashio remaining on Mauritius’ reefs, many questions … [] about how the ship got stuck on Mauritius’ reefs remain
More than four months since the major oil spill event on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, many questions still swirl around how the Japanese vessel, the Wakashio ended up grounded on Mauritius’ coral reefs in July.
Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi is on a two day visit to Mauritius on December 12 and 13 … [] to visit the site of the Wakashio wreck
Now the Japanese shipowner behind the Wakashio, Nagashiki Shipping, is attempting to hide behind a screen of corporate secrecy to not disclose material information to the shipwreck inquiry, following an investigation published in Forbes.
This follows two stories published in Forbes on November 25 and November 26 that highlighted the nearly 100 safety flaws with the Wakashio (which is an unusually high number), and statements by the CEO of Nagashiki Shipping which could not be corroborated with public shipping safety databases that the EU runs, called EQUASIS (Electronic Quality Shipping Information System).
The EU’s Electronic Quality Shipping Information System was designed to ensure transparency in the … [] global shipping industry
This is despite Mauritius currently being in a state of National Environmental Emergency, and the visit of Japan’s Foreign Minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, who is currently in Mauritius visiting the wreck of Wakashio, the stern of which is still stuck on Mauritius’ coral reefs.
It is precisely the use of offshore ‘Flags of Convenience’ that are causing shipowners to shield their risky fleets in these jurisdictions like Panama behind a complex and secret web of corporate shell companies.
The conduct of the shipowners and operators involved with the Wakashio disaster highlight just why the shipping laws that use offshore ‘Flags of Convenience’ registrations need to be reformed, to bring more transparency and safety into the sector.
This is the incomplete part of the work that the G20 led on offshore tax havens over the past decade, but inexplicably did not include global ship registration reform.
Hiding behind claims of ‘Commercial Sensitivity’
11 Aug 2020: A statement by Nagashiki Shipping CEO reveals that 11 vessels were owned by Nagashiki … [] Shipping
At a MOL-Nagashiki Shipping Press Conference on the Wakashio oil spill, hosted at MOL’s Headquarters in Tokyo on August 9, Nagashiki Shipping’s President and CEO Yoshiaki Nagashiki publicly stated that Nagashiki Shipping owns 11 vessels, which he specified as bulk carriers, container ships and tankers.
He was giving a joint press conference along with MOL’s Executive Vice President, Akihiko Ono, and MOL’s Head of Safe Operations Division, Masanori Kato.
However, using the EU’s shipping database, EQUASIS, it is only possible to identify five vessels owned by Nagashiki Shipping (one of which was added on November 1, the Admiral Jimmu).
The EU Shipping Database can only identify five vessels owned by Nagashiki Shipping despite the CEO … [] claiming 11 vessels are owned to the company
In response to clarifications about Nagshiki Shipping’s vessel ownership asked by Forbes on November 26, a spokesperson for Nagashiki Shipping responded on December 1, with “As these questions are commercially sensitive and do not directly relate to the incident we are unable to provide the requested information.”
The Wakashio had nearly 100 deficiencies
Wakashio was by far the riskiest vessel in Nagashiki Shipping’s fleet
The EU EQUASIS database also identified nearly 100 safety deficiencies with the Wakashio, several of which were very serious. This is many times higher than other vessels in Nagashiki Shipping’s stated fleet from their website.
Several serious safety flaws were identified with the Wakashio
An investigation by Forbes has identified further systemic risks with the Navigation Systems on almost all the vessels named by Nagashiki Shipping on its website.
There were historic and systematic risks identified with the navigation systems across most of … [] Nagashiki Shipping’s vessels in the EU database, EQUASIS
However, upon a closer examination, it turned out that many of these vessels did not appear to be owned by Nagashiki Shipping.
A search through several shipping databases cannot identify the 11 vessels that the CEO of Nagashiki Shipping is referring to which Nagashiki Shipping said they owned. In fact, only five vessels could be identified that are owned by Nagashiki Shipping, with the rest being linked to several of the biggest shipping companies in Japan.
Several changes and inconsistencies were observed between the vessels listed on Nagashiki Shipping’s … [] website and what was discovered in public databases available on ship safety
Changes to the records of the Wakashio
It was then noticed that several changes had been made to the public EQUASIS database around entries relating to the Wakashio.
Changes were made to Nagashiki Shipping’s records on 25 August and 27 October 2020, three months … [] after the vessel was declared a total loss
There was also an inexplicable entry that showed the insurance for the Wakashio beginning on August 7, the day after the oil spill began, and 13 days after the vessel had run aground on Mauritius’ coral reefs.
Wakashio’s insurance shows it being started on 7 August, the day after the oil spill. No … [] explanation has been given for this.
No explanation has been given for these changes.
In response to questions by Forbes whether Nagashiki Shipping issued any instructions to alter any documentation for the Wakashio since its grounding on July 25, a spokesperson for Nagashiki Shipping responded with one word, “No,” on November 1.
In response to questions about the inexplicable changes to vessels held by Nagashiki Shipping, including the subsidiary shell company Okiyo Maritime which the Wakashio was being held under, the spokesperson for Nagashiki Shipping responded with, “There has not been any restructure of our business.”
At the time of the Wakashio’s grounding, there were two vessels registered with Okiyo Maritime. Now, there are none.
Mitsui’s relationship with the Wakashio
Mitsui OSK Lines President and CEO Junichiro Ikeda attends a press conference at the company’s … [] headquarters in Tokyo on September 11, 2020. What did MOL know about the Wakashio?
There are also questions about what MOL knew about the Wakashio. Many of these questions also extend to how the vessel was operated and the risks entailed there.
On, September 14, a spokesperson for MOL said in response to questions from Forbes, “Our relationship with Wakashio had started since her delivery in May, 2007 as Charterer from Nagashiki Shipping’s point of view. We had also sublet the vessel to a different Charterer, which in this contract we would be considered the operator from sublet Charterers point of view.”
Hidden corporate structures used in shipping
Panama City: the global headquarters for offshore ship registrations
At the core of shipping safety is the use of offshore ‘Flags of Convenience.’ 70% of global shipping continues to be registered in six jurisdictions that have increased the risk to ship safety.
The largest ship registry is Panama, which is where the Wakashio was registered. Several other vessels that were registered with Panama had major shipping incidents this summer leading to the deaths of 41 crew, 6000 cattle and narrowly avoiding a major ecological disaster by a Panama-registered oil supertanker off the coast of Sri Lanka.
A spokesperson for MOL clarified the relationship between MOL and Nagashiki Shipping on September 14, with “This charter had already expired, and at the time of the incident as she was on a ballast voyage and had no cargo. The Charter chain was simply MOL as Charterer and Nagashiki Shipping as Owner. If she was laden, we would have been the Operator, Nagashiki shipping would be the Owner, and whom ever that had taken her on a spot voyage would have been the Charterer.”
Forbes has since asked for clarification for who the operator would have been for the return journey from Brazil, when presumably the Wakashio would have been laden and also passing by Mauritius. No response has been received by MOL.
A campaign for shipping reform
19 Oct 2020: Protests against secretive shipping laws have taken place around the world, seen here … [] outside the UN’s IMO by activist group Ocean Rebellion
Once more, the actions of Nagashiki Shipping and Mitsui OSK Lines epitomizes why global shipping laws need to be reformed to have greater transparency and safety.
The Wakashio is an example where a shipping incident has caused a State of National Environmental Emergency to be declared in a nation (still ongoing), provoked over 100,000 people to march on the streets of Mauritius and triggered protests around the world, prompting a major political crisis, put in danger dozens of the world’s rarest species, and yet a Japanese company finds that it is too ‘commercially sensitive’ to disclose material information that could already not be corroborated.
Japan has already been under fire for pushing forward with targets at the UN’s shipping agency last month that broke the Paris Climate Agreement.
This is not compatible with statements made by the Government of Japan when they declared they would meet 2050 climate targets with trust and transparency.
With Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi’s visit in Mauritius, the real test will be how much transparency is now revealed about the events that led to the Wakashio’s grounding.
