This made me start sobbing so hard
[image description: a quote card from kindle quotes reading “My birth family never understood these subtle movements, either ignoring them completely or reacting with downright contempt. However, my chosen family doesn't seem to mind. In fact, they're quite happy to dance along.” Chuck Tingle Camp Damascus

For real really suggest this book to like anyone who had some eduction in the US! It covers a lot of things that are kind of glossed over in a public education or were purposefully skipped. It will really inform you about why the US is one of the most hated countries in the world and it’s because we deserve to be. It’s also just written in a really approachable way with plenty of super sarcastic jokes scattered in to keep you engaged.
I think it was you who recommended reading How to Hide an Empire a while back? Just wanted to say thank you :) it was a really important read that filled a lot of holes in my US history education. I live in Alaska so I knew a bit more about that and Hawaii than an average American might but still learned a lot.
yes!!! i love love love that book, i'm so glad to hear you picked it up!! you're very welcome 🥰🤎

Man looking at other people’s theories for how BBC Ghosts Captain died and everyone is so much nicer than me lol the one episode that focused on his backstory I formed an opinion and it’s clear that nobody else came up with the same thing I did. I have Problems ™️
I thought it was like vague but heavily implied in S2E3 that he’d killed Havers and himself before Havers could leave and give the landmine info to the Germans? Buried Havers in the grave with the landmine and plans and then killed himself with poison after since we can’t see any obvious cause of death on him. My thought was Havers’ ghost had been stuck in the grave and was released only when the bomb finally went off. There was clearly a love thing going on and maybe the Captain was worried he’d be outed if Havers was caught out because of the mine planes and tortured for more intel.
But maybe I’m just incredibly morbid lol

Top Games I Played This Year!
It’s time for me to talk about my favorite games I played this year! It’s a top 8 this time because I played SO many bangers this year. These are not in a particular order of favorites - just all games I played this year that I would HIGHLY recommend. Let’s go!
First one on my mind today is Tangle Tower (sequel announced this month) which is a point and click detective mystery/puzzle game from SBX Games with so much charm. This was clearly a labor of love from the art to the music to the sassy lines A++ to the point I double bought it
One I played more recently is Loddlenaut a chill clean up game reminiscent of Powerwash Simulator with super cute graphics and little fish (loddles) you can pet and have follow you around. Def check it out!
My best OST award goes to Coffee Talk whose music has become The Thing I listen to while reading. Great graphic novel game with really interesting story and a fun little side game of making coffee. Don’t go in expecting a coffee sim and you’ll have a great time!
Game that made me hungriest goes to Venba - an incredibly emotional game about food, identity, and family that has such incredible foley work that even just thinking about it right now I’m getting hungry. Be prepared to be starving for the whole game
Award for best game to pour unlimited time into is Dredge. A very well made and thought out game where you’re just a fisherman, ignore The Horrors :) it’ll be fine. I continued playing this even after finishing the story because it’s just fun to fish in it!
Looking for a game similar to the Coffee Talk vibe but a lot racier with some really interesting capitalist dystopia discussions? Check out Va-11 Hall-a! This time you’re running a bar and talking with patrons while the world crumbles around you.
Want to run a plant shop while you hinder or help the horrors outside? Check out Strange Horticulture! You help people around town with your plant collection and puzzle out what’s what and how to deal with what someone unleashed. Just pet the cat it’s fine
The final game but the one I think helped me emotionally the most this year is I am Dead from The Hollow Ponds. a very touching game about death and what we leave behind. Fun mechanics, cool puzzles, and collectibles that make you work for it around a warm story. As most people know I started my year out with my mother passing away and a lot of games I played touched that in different ways but I am Dead definitely helped me find a way to balance memory, legacy, and love because you work through that for other people throughout the story.

I’m reading a book about Henrietta Lacks and her cells (and really the injustice of all of it) and went to look up something. First thing I found was an article from yesterday saying the family had reached a settlement in their case about the use of her cells and the profit made off of them.
One of the themes in the book is the millions of coincidences and little moments that made all of her family believe her spirit was controlling her own story and who learned about what when. Does feel a bit serendipitous that I started reading the book right around the settlement ending

I’m just ahhhhhhhh
I just wanted to have a vague idea of how incredibly they were underpaying this difficult and incredibly dangerous work. I didn’t want to have a fucking existential crisis.

Dordogne (game not the place) is really cool. The story was well played and the graphics are gorgeous and original BUT there are two big flashing light scenes that you need to playthrough near the end of the game with no accessibility option. So this game that I was so hyped for that I checked the game page every day for like two months to see if it was released yet isn’t going to go into my top five of the year list.
#Katie is rambling 2k23#this year is really proving to me how light sensitive I actually am#the flashing lights in this one gave me a headache#nothing really bad but still easily avoidable without destroying the game play imo#takes a 4/5 to a 2.5/5 for me#dordogne#Katie does new media 2k23
