The point that Rat Park is used to underscore is true. Environment often plays a role in a person developing an addiction and the War on Drugs does nothing to address that. In fact, the War on Drugs has done tremendous harm by ignoring the sociological factors that contribute to addiction and focusing exclusively on criminalization. [Bruce] Alexander and [Johann] Hari argue that we need a more humane approach to drug policy, a belief that is widely shared. But ignoring the greater body of addiction science in favor of a neat narrative is the kind of thinking that fueled the War on Drugs. It’s precisely because this is such an important fight that we should make sure our arguments, and the evidence we use to support them, are sound.

As ever, I didn’t read as much as I wanted to in 2021 and, of course, I still haven’t finished Finnegans Wake. Here are a few more books I finished this year and the complete list is below.
A Lonely Man by Chris Power is a brilliant and ingeniously layered literary thriller. Like a postmodern Le Carre with much to say about what stories are ours to tell.
The Eighth Girl by Maxine Mei-Fung Chung has an interesting premise (a multiple-personality psychological thriller) but I found the writing clunky and cliched at times (the phrase ‘murder of crows’ appears twice). Great story though and I’ll be interested to see the TV adaptation if it comes to light.
I read Satan is Real in preparation for my interview with Wendy Erskine for Your Own Personal Beatles. Two brilliantly written and very disturbing short stories. I can’t wait to read Wendy’s new collection Dance Move which is published next year. When I spoke to Wendy she had just interviewed Paul Muldoon so I also read his latest collection of poems Howdie-Skelp, which is playful, inscrutable and surprisingly filthy. Muldoon of course edited the collection of Paul McCartney’s Lyrics this year so it was nice to see a mention of ‘Lovely Rita’ in the poem ‘An Item’.
Shappi Khorsandi also appeared on Your Own Personal Beatles this year and I absolutely loved her book A Beginner’s Guide to Acting English. Shappi writes so well from the point of view of a child and this memoir is a really extraordinary account of her family’s arrival in the UK following the Iranian Revolution in the late 70s.
Happy new year to you all – my resolution for next year is to only read one book at a time!
Here are all the other books I read in 2021:
Close to the Bone – Stuart MacBride The Death of Francis Bacon – Max Porter Asylum Road – Olivia Sudjic Girl A – Abigail Dean Klara and the Sun – Kazuo Ishiguro The Dark is Rising – Susan Cooper Boy Parts – Eliza Clark My Phantoms – Gwendoline Riley (my book of the year) Delicacy: A Memoir about Cake and Death – Katy Wix What Belongs to You – Garth Greenwell No One is Talking about This – Patricia Lockwood Sweet Home – Wendy Erskine A Song for the Dark Times – Ian Rankin How to Write One Song – Jeff Tweedy The Last Landlady – Laura Thompson Acts of Desperation – Megan Nolan Good Morning, Midnight – Jean Rhys A Pale View of Hills – Kazuo Ishiguro Beautiful World, Where Are You? – Sally Rooney Far From the Madding Crowd – Thomas Hardy Beatles ’66: The Revolutionary Year – Steve Turner The Beatles: The Authorised Biography – Hunter Davies

Elizabeth Warren has a plan to fix everything, even our sad love lives
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Warren is all about making plans, and she's bringing her expert policy-making skills to social media.
The 2020 presidential candidate has plans to forgive student debt, rebuild the middle class, and even end the opioid crisis. But she's also open to helping people navigate their tricky love lives.
On Saturday, comedian Ashley Nicole Black asked her 88,000 followers if they thought Warren had a plan to fix her love life. On Sunday, Warren, queen of policies, unexpectedly replied to the tweet directly.
"DM me and let's figure this out," Warren tweeted. Simply iconic.

Dianne Feinstein becomes target of ‘lock her up’ chant at Trump rally
Every time President Donald Trump hosts a presidential rally, he sinks to a new low. Just last week, Trump mocked Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser Dr. Christine Blasey Ford in front of his voters. This time around, he claimed Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) leaked Dr. Ford’s accusation letter, encouraging supporters who chanted “lock her up.”
The controversy began during a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where Trump methodically listed Democratic senators and attacked them one by one. After making fun of Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), he turned to Feinstein, claiming that she purposefully leaked Dr. Ford’s letter accusing Kavanaugh of sexual assault.
“Did you leak the documents?” Trump quipped as the crowd behind him gradually began chanting “lock her up.” After he heard the chants, Trump laughed and smiled.
“Did she leak it? 100 percent,” Trump told the crowd. “No, I don’t want to get sued, so 99 percent. Now I can’t get sued.”

— The Hill (@thehill) October 10, 2018
Trump then compared voting Democrat to handing “matches to an arsonist” and giving “power to an angry left-wing mob.”
“They would turn our country so fast into Venezuela—and Venezuela’s not doing too well, folks,” Trump told the crowd. “If you want to drain the swamp, you must defeat the Democrats, or you’re gonna have one hell of a swamp.”
youtube
Feinstein has since denied Trump’s statements and criticized his rhetoric.
“Dr. Blasey Ford knows I kept her confidence, she and her lawyers said so repeatedly,” Feinstein said according to the Washington Post. “Republican senators admit it. Even the reporter who broke the story said it wasn’t me or my staff. The president’s remarks are ridiculous and an embarrassment.”
While Feinstein was the first senator to receive Dr. Ford’s letter, she has vehemently denied leaking it. Instead, she claims she received the letter in July and protected its confidentiality since then, as part of Ford’s request. The letter later leaked to the Intercept, where bureau chief Ryan Grim confirmed Feinstein did not leak the letter.
It remains unclear who leaked Dr. Ford’s original letter, which sparked one of the most contentious Supreme Court confirmations since Anita Hill’s sexual harassment accusations against Clarence Thomas in 1991. Either way, Trump’s accusations last night sparked concern across Twitter as onlookers realized Trump was more than happy to target female politicians who went against his administration’s goals.
At the same rally where President Trump called Democrats dangerous, unhinged, and an "angry left-wing mob"
It appeared that the president laughed as the crowd chanted that Sen. Dianne Feinstein should be locked up. https://t.co/YxZ5Tj7mT1

interesting how "lock her up" has become just a standard chant now at trump rallies to levy against any woman supporters don't like https://t.co/7KKUf57xQe
— Charlie Warzel (@cwarzel) October 9, 2018
"Lock her up" is now the go-to solution for any woman who defies Trump https://t.co/GnHRQhPf3x
— Jessica Valenti (@JessicaValenti) October 10, 2018
Oh hey look it’s the same people screaming about due process for Kavanaugh chanting “lock her up” at a Trump rally. https://t.co/QoxJ70p0DV
— Bridget Phetasy (@BridgetPhetasy) October 9, 2018
Civility from Trump in last couple of days: Encouraged "lock her up chants" about Dianne Feinstein Called Kavanaugh opponents "evil" Labeled Dems as "radical socialists who want to model America’s economy after Venezuela." https://t.co/PpgedVUplL
— Don Moynihan (@donmoyn) October 10, 2018
So now it’s “lock her up” for ANY female political opponent of Trump, including one of the longest-serving US senators in our country.
He has been doing this for more than 2 years.
He is a threat to democracy.
Where are you now, @JeffFlake? https://t.co/IoagGgEBqd
— Mark Follman (@markfollman) October 10, 2018
Some hope the midterm elections will stop Trump and his supporters in their tracks and prevent his base from feeling emboldened to go after more women in politics.
Trump's Iowa rally chanted "lock her up"… about Dianne Feinstein.
It's not even just Hillary anymore. Now the MAGA hats want to imprison any woman politician they dislike. Trump supporters might not be better than this, but America is. Vote accordingly. pic.twitter.com/JPWc1DREP1
— Adam Best (@adamcbest) October 10, 2018
Senator Mitch loves Trump's angry mobs, like the one that killed Heather Heyer.
Due process? #LockHerUp
Democrats protesting his illegitimate elevation of two SCOTUS justices?
Real mobs. Huh?#TheResistance will not forget.
We will vote.https://t.co/ZdBySG49pt
— Grant Stern (@grantstern) October 10, 2018
This is what an actual mob looks like. A party whose only contribution to the political discourse is the frenzied “lock her up” and dog-whistling “MAGA” appeals to the lowest common denominator of the lowest of lowlifes. If you don’t want them running the country, VOTE on Nov 6. https://t.co/DC6KlGBpPX
— Beau Willimon (@BeauWillimon) October 10, 2018
Trump calls women who speak out against their sexual abusers “evil” and his supporters shout “lock her up” about every strong woman that won’t bow down to him.
This is who the GOP is. Vote them out.
— Christie (@Christie_D22) October 10, 2018
Anytime you hear some Trumper shout “lock her up”, make sure 3 women you know are registered to vote. https://t.co/dXTN4xbnpD

Rolling Stone Weighs in on CBD: What About Quality?
CBD seems to be everywhere these days. Everyday someone is sending me a link to an article or a segment on TV bestowing the myriad benefits of CBD. I’ve been cultivating hemp and CBD oils for the better part of three decades and for the vast majority of this time, I did so with an abundance of caution as I well understood the risks I was taking. So while it’s refreshing that CBD has stepped out of the proverbial shadows, there remains a great deal of confusion about a variety of aspects surrounding both the legality of CBDs in general as well as gaps in consumer’s understanding regarding the vast differences in quality between various CBD products currently in the market.
So it’s encouraging to see some of these issues being addressed in mainstream publications such as this excellent article by Rolling Stone contributor Katie MacBride “How CBD Became the Unexpected Star of Legalized Pot” who among other things, does an admirable job parsing complex nuances in how the DEA goes about distinguishing legal versus illegal CBD:
“For the DEA to determine if a product is federally legal, they start by seeing which plant the CBD came from – marijuana or hemp. Hemp and marijuana both come from the same genus and species, Cannabis sativa, and both contain CBD. Hemp, traditionally grown for fiber and seeds, is simply cannabis with the THC bred out. Federal law dictates that hemp must have less than .3 percent THC – making it useless to someone looking to get high. For this reason, it's often easier to refer to psychoactive or high-THC cannabis as marijuana. Technically speaking, the CBD produced in marijuana is exactly the same as CBD from hemp, though according to the federal government, only one of those kinds of CBD is ever legal – the kind that comes from hemp.
Once you’ve wrapped your head around that, Katie delves into one of the most pressing challenges facing our young industry: how to ensure quality in today's largely unregulated environment and what questions CBD consumers need to ask to better educate themselves - especially as more and more products hit the market making unsubstantiated claims about their contents and efficacy:
"More likely, this gray area allows some CBD manufacturing to go unnoticed, be willfully ignored, or be shipped from out of state… But what about quality? Aside from legal distinctions, is one kind of CBD superior to the other? It depends on whom you ask. Pamela Hadfield, co-founder of HelloMD.com, an online guide to medical cannabis, notes that industrial hemp is a "bioaccumulator," meaning it pulls environmental contaminants out of the soil. "It's really effective at drawing toxins out of the soil and into the plant itself," she says. "So you don't always know what, in addition to CBD, might have been in the plant.”
While local and state regulations likely make CBD from a dispensary safe, all the experts Rolling Stone spoke with stressed the importance of being an educated consumer and doing research about the company behind any CBD product. It's not enough to just read the ingredients and confirm that what you're buying is "lab tested," you're going to want to look into the company. Do they make a range of CBD products? Are they carried most reputable places that sell CBD oil in your area? The more restrictive the cannabis/CBD regulations are in your area, the more investigative work you're going to want to do.
The issues of quality and consistency are near and dear to everyone here at Functional Remedies and something you will hear us talk about at length. Not only have we spent decades refining the genetics of our plants to maximize CBD yield while minimizing THC, we also own the entire supply chain which allows us to assure quality at every stage of production. From seed to finished product, all of our cultivation and manufacturing processes are done in strict accordance with sustainable farming practices.
