In the past, Kassara feels the weight of expectations as the Second Sundering draws to a close. Darkness follows closely on her heels, and in Bhaal's silence she struggles to find herself beneath.

5. Their favourite 'strictly business associates' bonding activity on a Saturday night? Please don't leave out any of the bloody gory details.

Oh I can go two ways with this. Domestic and unhinged. A domestic night for them usually came later on in the piece, in the last few years before Orin absconded with her, and they were both working frantically to make sure their plans came to pass. They'd usually both be on opposite ends of one of the couches, legs entwined while they both poured over their respective books and notebooks - Enver reading Gondian treatises on the volatility of black powder and any necromantic essays on neurology and electrophysiology he could get his hands on, Kass reading absolutely everything and anything under the sun in her voracious thirst for knowledge. Druidic alchemical guides, dry political theses on various class movements, insanely complex discussions on spelljammer technology. She doesn't get the peace to study or read quietly at home, so they sometimes fell asleep like that.

Unhinged, they played incredibly deranged sexual games with a lot of their prey, especially when they were younger. There was at least one occasion when Gortash invited several rival leaders of various smuggling and merc groups to dinner, only for them all to be paralysed by a poison in the food, at which point Kass trotted out dressed in a terribly slutty french maid outfit pretending to serve drinks, while she actually slit all of their throats one by one while Gortash pretended to berate her for being clumsy in front of his guests. They all had to sit there paralysed and waiting for their turn to die while she teetered around the table in stiletto heels pretending she was trying to clean up the blood with napkins. And then Kass and Enver fucked on the table while the last one sat frozen and forced to watch

I'm going to love you on purpose.

It's a challenge. It's a taunt. It's a mocking reminder that they can't control one another no matter how hard they both try to twist each other. It's a desperate life buoy for a little boy sold into demonic slavery and for a little girl who was dumped on top of a pedestal and told she was untouchable. It's a moment of defiance. It's a love confession whispered late at night. It's the one thing that finally broke both of them.

Chapter Thirteen - In the past, the Absolute plot takes shape, and Enver feels more powerful than he could ever have imagined, verging on the fringes of godhood - only to crash back to reality when he realises that Kassara is keeping excruciating secrets from him. In the present, Kassara and Enver have a lot to talk about. The sensible place for such a fraught discussion is, of course, a bathtub.

In the present, Kass tries to build a life for them with the broken shards that remain - and finds, one final time, the allure of godhood laid out before her, and the promise of her Father's demise once and for all. All it will cost her, it seems, is everything.

In the present, Carmela plans with her allies on how best to confront the Elder Brain, while Kassara makes an alarming demand and finds a very unlikely ally amenable to her quest to save Enver's soul from Bane.

I go back and forth on several songs as to which is THE song for them but I always come back to Power. It's just so good (also the film clip of Isak being lovingly tortured in his underpants in an empty warehouse while bruised and bloodied by a sultry woman in high heels doesn't hurt either)

I am stopping myself from ordering more BG3 commissions until after I've seen the surgeon in case money needs to be spent on surgery so HERE IS A RAMBLE ABOUT THE FAMILY ANSURAN aka spoilers for Keep Telling Me To Breathe

Flynn Ansuran. Kass and Enver's firstborn. Precious miracle child, long after Kass had accepted that she would never have children. A slight and subtle intervention on Torm's part, because the gods are never not meddling in the lives of mortals, even with the best of intentions.

Born with Ansur's copper scales, a reminder of Kass' pact with the undead dragon to protect the city, he is nonetheless quite reserved in his use of magic. He does not have his father's knack for charm and manipulation, nor does he have his mother's sense of flamboyance and cunning. He's a sensible, quiet boy, and there are jokes amongst the Tadfools that a mistake was made and they've actually ended up with Heron's child, as he takes after his uncle strikingly so.

He does however have the same sense of rigid determination and dogged perseverance of his parents, and he takes his mother's stories about Ansur and the Heart of the Gate so, so seriously. He takes to the sword and shield, and he follows Knight Commander Tavares around like a lost puppy. He's a squire by his tenth birthday. He's an officer in the Flaming Fists by his eighteenth. By the time Kass feels ready to retire and pass off the Heart of the Gate to Flynn, he's a fully fledged paladin, Oath of the Crown: "The Oath of the Crown is sworn to the ideals of civilization, be it the spirit of a nation, fealty to a sovereign, or service to a deity of law and rulership. The paladins who swear this oath dedicate themselves to serving society and, in particular, the laws that hold society together." Flynn Ansuran, Heart of the Gate, serves Baldur's Gate, and there are none who love this city more than he does

Orin Ansuran. Kass and Enver's secondborn. Capricious first daughter, she bears so many traits of her namesake, as well as some of the more questionable traits of her parents. Ambitious. Self confident. Arrogant - a toddler who absolutely knows what the word no means, and absolutely does not accept it under any circumstances unless she's the one using it.

She bears the same draconic sorcery as Flynn, but she takes to it like a duck to water. Magic comes as easily to her as breathing, but that's not enough for little Orin - she does not simply wish to have magic, she wishes to conquer magic, the same brazen confidence that was her father's downfall. At the age of seven, and with significant help from Gale, they are able to convince the Blackstaff Academy to take her in as an apprentice despite her incredibly young age, and she begins training as a wizard. She spends the school semesters living in Waterdeep with Gale and Rhyme and their children, and returns to Baldur's Gate for the holidays. If you had to put a label on her, it'd probably be a multiclassed sorceress/wizard with draconic sorcery and Order of Scribes subclasses, but you probably shouldn't try to label her

Beautiful to the point of disbelief as an adult, Orin Ansuran knows exactly how attractive she is, and she knows she's definitely smarter than you, and she's absolutely insufferable. She is voraciously loyal, almost blindly so, and sometimes her intense fixations remind Enver very much of a younger Kassara. He would never dream of saying that out loud in front of the two of them

Hope Ansuran. The almost-didn't-make-it miracle third. Hope is the darling of the family, hopelessly (hah!) spoiled, endlessly doted on, and incredibly mischievous. She is the balance between her brother's stoic sense of duty and her sister's arrogant notions of grandeur. She is eager to learn, and eager to play, and just sees life as a grand and happy adventure

Perhaps it was inevitable that she would be drawn to Enver's tinkerings, given that her siblings were away from home through much of her childhood and she gravitated to watching her father in his workshop. Enver crafts a little mechanised go-kart, essentially a kiddie sized chariot, just big enough for little Hope and Sceleritas to stand in as it wheels through the city streets, and the two of them absolutely menace the population of Baldur's Gate with their hooligan antics. It's impossible to stay mad at Hope Ansuran, though, she just radiates a timeless joy that you can't help but smile at in return

She tags along endlessly behind her mother and father, soaking up everything from them. Like Flynn, her draconic sorcery is useful, but not her main interest, and she follows after Enver to become an artificer. She builds her first Steel Defender pet by the time she's nine, and becomes the finest Battle Smith in all of the Gate, even above the Gondians. And while Flynn is automatically afforded a title and a place in parliament as the Heart of the Gate, Hope networks aggressively and makes her way into politics on her own merits, and one day will serve the Gate as one of the Grand Dukes. Oh, and just to finally set old wounds to rest, she marries Hypatia Ravengard, daughter of Wyll, Karlach and Violet Ravengard - nothing better than the new generation healing the hurts of the past
