On Tuesday evening the Uttarakhand Government made a big announcement of canceling the Kanwar Yatra 2021. After a long speculation that the Pushkar Dhami led government would overrule the earlier decision made by the Tirath Rawat led government, the government took the decision.

“At a time when the threat of Covid-19 is still looming and a case of the Delta-plus variant has also been reported from Uttarakhand, we cannot allow Haridwar to become a hotbed of the pandemic,” Dhami said.

“People’s lives are important and we cannot play around with them. It is important to save lives during a pandemic. Even god will not like it if any lives are lost.”

The Kanwar Yatra is being cancelled for the second year in a row. Last year too, the existing Trivendra Rawat government canceled the Yatra in view of the rising cases of COVID-19 cases.

As Dhami took over the CM post in Uttarakhand, there was a powerful speculation that the decision would be revoked. The CM of UP Yogi Adityanath also called Dhami and requested to allow a limited number of Kanwariyes from UP to enter Haridwar.

After the call, the speculations got more strength and Dhami even asked his officers to consult with the neighboring states like Delhi, Haryana and UP from where large number of Kanwariyes come to Haridwar every year.

After consultation with honorable PM Narendra Modi & Union Home Minister Amit Shah the decision was made. “The government of Uttarakhand has made a wise decision and taken a clear stand. All energies should now be focused on strengthening our infrastructure/human resource to minimize the impact of the imminent third wave of the pandemic.”
