2020 Campaign: Art+Activism

When we selected the theme of Art+Activism for the 2020 campaign, we could not have imagined what has happened this year. Despite the fact that many of our events were forced to be canceled due to the global pandemic, there is still much to celebrate!

In 2020, we celebrated Art+Feminism events in 6 continents, in 27 countries and 20 different languages.

We’ve spotlighted a few events in Peru, Brazil, Turkey, and Germany on our website. Participants this year created articles for Irma Poma Canchumani, Mavi Doñate, Rhina Toruño, Group Material, Kantarama Gahigiri Hertha Sponer, Marian Pastor Roces, Gabrielle L'Hirondelle Hill, Ingeborg Kahlenberg, People's Flag Show, Anne Marie Komissar, Kasturba Gandi, Guadalupe Rosales, Jota Mombaça, Bety Reis, Joana D’Arc da Silva Cavalcante, Djuena Tikuna, Olga Mariano, Lina Bögli and Anne Boyer, to name a few. We also want to acknowledge and thank all the organizers and partners whose events, unfortunately, weren’t able to move forward this year as planned. We recognize and celebrate your labor and efforts, as well. We are truly thankful for our global community!

As we continue to navigate virtual space together, we’ve created a Collaborative Virtual Resource Guide, along with Accessibility Considerations. We’ve also created a Remote Learning Resource List for teachers and professors preparing for the fall semester and beyond. We are actively creating and consolidating information for organizers for our next campaign.

And as we find ourselves simultaneously in a pandemic and in a civil rights movement, art + activism seem more pertinent than ever. We created a Collaborative List around the George Floyd Uprisings. We also recognize our own internal learning and unlearning that is necessary within our organization as we all strive to center interactional feminism and anti-racist practices. As part of that journey, we’re currently engaging internally with restorative practices training facilitated by harp+sword and the first phase of strategic planning with Wayfinding Partners.

Leadership Transition

Jacqueline Mabey and Siân Evans, co-founders of Art+Feminism, are stepping down from their roles as co-lead organizers involved with the day-to-day operations at the end of August. Even though this has been a planned transition for over a year, it’s bittersweet for the organization. What they started as a passion project among friends has grown into a global organization, and we’re forever grateful. They have both graciously served for seven years and we wouldn't be the organization we are today without their kindness, dedication, activism, and collaboration. They’re both already doing big things - Jacqueline is starting a PhD in History of Art at University College London. Siân has recently stepped into the role of co-chair for the Staff Empowerment Council at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where she is a librarian, and wants to spend more time on her writing and research. Please join us in celebrating them both and extending gratitude for all their tireless efforts. They will be missed.

We are delighted to share that in Fall 2020, the co-lead organizing team will consist of Amber Berson (Montréal, Quebec), Mohammed Sadat Abdulai (Accra, Ghana), and Melissa Tamani (Lima, Peru). We are also happy to share that Project Administrator Nina Yeboah (Stone Mountain, GA) will be joining Kira Wisniewski (Baltimore, MD) as Art+Feminism’s full-time staff in the role of Program Manager starting this fall.

Regional Ambassadors play a key role in the development and success of a project that promotes editorial and content inclusivity in Wikipedia. At the core, Regional Ambassadors work with their region by establishing and nurturing relationships and managing communication and project pipelines alongside the leadership team. Regional Amabssadors have strong project management skills, a demonstrated history of work in social justice/community organizing, an interest in the arts and feminist work, and a working knowledge of the Wikipedia community or other online technology community. "Tapis Rouge", de la banlieue à Cannes

Moins d’une semaine avant le début du Festival de Cannes, Frédéric Baillif et Kantaram Gahigiri vous emmènent sur la Croisette avec Tapis Rouge

Éducateur de quartier versé en choses cinématographiques, Fred (Frédéric Landenberg) aide un groupe de jeunes à réaliser leur premier court métrage. Entre ébauches de pitch et cours de scénario, leur idée prend forme jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient frappés par l’évidence : s’adjoindre les services d’un producteur est le seul moyen de financer leur projet. Direction Cannes !

Réalisé en 2013, ce road movie entre Lausanne et Cannes est surprenamment charmant. Docu-fiction exemplaire, Tapis Rouge réussi le tour de force de réunir des comédiens professionnels et des comédiens amateurs originaires des mêmes quartiers que ceux dans lesquelles leurs personnages sont contraints d’évoluer — et ce sans que le spectateur ne questionne un seul instant ni l’honnêteté de leur performance ni la véracité de leurs propos.

Si Tapis Rouge est en premier lieu une réflexion sur la création cinématographique et son accessibilité au plus grand nombre, c’est également une représentation sans fard et sans détour du monde des banlieues faisant sans peine fi du politiquement correct afin de réhabiliter les talents des cité.

Si Tapis Rouge réunit les qualités comme les défauts d’un premier film, il n’en demeure pas moins attendrissant. Partisan du bout de ficelle, Baillif et Gahigiri font beaucoup avec peu et démontrent avec élégance que « faire un film c’est pas sorcier, c’est normal« . Joyeux bordel porté par de mélodieux contrepieds à une réalité mouvementée, Tapis Rouge est révélateur d’une société où quoi que l’on en dise, tout est bel et bien possible.

Clin d’oeil supposément involontaire aux blockbusters du géant Marvel, le générique est suivi du désormais fameux court métrage, dont l’esthétisme extrême tranche délicieusement avec le naturalisme de Tapis Rouge. La cerise sur le gâteau en somme !

Fred Baillif mostró largometraje en Caracas

Venezuela.- El reconocido cineasta Fred Baillif mostró a la opinión pública “Tapis rouge“, en la ciudad de Caracas.

El largometraje inicial de ficción del suizo Frédéric Baillif, junto con Kantarama Gahigiri, se titula “Tapis rouge” (“Alfombra roja”) y es lo que sus directores definen como una película de carretera que, al mejor estilo de Thelma y Louise y Paris, Texas, mostró una frescura particular durante su presentación en el país, en un evento que organizó la Embajada de Suiza, en el marco del mes de la francofonía y del Festival de Cine Euroscopio 2017.

El filme tomó trece días en rodarse y se caracteriza por su sensibilidad estética plasmada en cada cuadro a través de los colores cálidos que identifican la producción, gracias a la elegante fotografía de Joseph Areddy. Pero la historia también es un relato cargado de sensibilidad emocional, pues refleja la difícil realidad sociológica que viven los habitantes de los sectores más pobres de Suiza.

“Entiendo que la situación venezolana y la suiza es difícilmente comparable, pero el mundo de los chicos que participaron en Tapis Rouge es tan complicado como el de cualquier persona que no tiene familia”, explicó Baillif.

Según lo explicado por el director, el argumento de este largometraje puede parecer sencillo a simple vista, pero lo cierto es que encuentra su inspiración en la “complicada” historia de un grupo de jóvenes de Bouveresses –un barrio de la periferia de Lausana-, que sin experiencia previa en la actuación decide embarcarse en un proyecto cinematográfico, y después vender el guión en el Festival de Cannes.

Todos los intérpretes aceptaron el desafío de Baillif y Gahigiri e inyectaron la espontaneidad improvisada que los caracteriza en cada escena de la película, con una fragilidad que en lugar de mostrar un quiebre, llena la cinta de vida. Y es que los relatos personales de los ahora artistas se emplearon como material en bruto que durante las casi dos horas de película se convierten en parte integral del mundo que imaginó Baillif.

La presentación de la película contó con la moderación del cineasta venezolano Edgar Rocca y una representante de la Escuela Nacional de Cine, quienes junto con los comentarios en primera persona del creador europeo, presentaron al público, en su mayoría diplomático, su visión del filme.
