Lucknow: Taking a dig at the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, BSP chief Mayawati said the death of a mother-daughter duo during an anti-encroachment drive in Kanpur Dehat had garnered more attention than the recent UP Global Investors Summit-2023.

"The 'bulldozer politics' of the BJP government is taking the lives of innocent poor people which is very tragic. The government should change its anti-people approach," she said in a tweet in Hindi.

Bulldozers used for demolishing illegal buildings have been in hot discussion in the state, inviting the sobriquet of "bulldozer Baba" for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

A 45-year-old woman and her 20-year-old daughter died in a fire during an anti-encroachment drive in a village in the Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, police said.

Mayawati said the tragic incident was in the news than the 'much-publicized' global investors summit organized by the state government recently.

She asked, "How will the people benefit from such a situation?" Police have booked 39 people, including a sub-divisional magistrate, four revenue officials, a police station head, and several other cops, on murder and additional charges in the incident.

KANPUR: A man hacked his 23-year-old wife to death in the Bhognipur area of Kanpur Dehat and then went to the police station to confess to the crime on Tuesday night. He told the cops that he used to have arguments with his wife because would frequent her maternal place regularly. Circle Officer, Bhognipur, Prabhat Kumar said that the incident was reported on Tuesday night when Ram Kumar, a street vendor, and a resident of Majariya Umariya village reached the police station and asked the cops to visit his house where his wife Uma’s body is lying. He told the cops that an argument had broken out between him and Uma. “Ram Kumar said that he was not happy with his wife’s habit of visiting her maternal home often. He killed her using a spade as she had hit him with a brick over the same dispute in the night,” said CO. When she fell unconscious, he dragged her to their room and himself left for the police station. “Police later recovered the spade from the room itself,” the CO added. Uma’s father Chandrapal, who also reached the spot, told investigators that there was a programme at his home in which his daughter Uma also came. Two days back, Ramkumar had taken Uma from her house. “My daughter has been murdered for dowry,” said Chandrapal. Later, he filed a complaint accusing his son-in-law Ram Kumar, mother-in-law, father-in-law and other relatives of being involved in the murder of his daughter. Violence erupted in at least 18 districts of Uttar Pradesh during local body elections on Saturday, The Indian Express reported. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party claimed victory in 635 out of 825 posts of block panchayat heads even as the Opposition Samajwadi Party accused the state government of misusing its administrative machinery to “forcefully capture” the seats.

When stopped by officials, they fired shots and pelted stones, following which the police dispersed them, Singh said.

The officer added that seven cartridges were recovered from the spot and that the police did not fire any shots.
