Fan Favorite Yuri Series 'Handsome Girl and Sheltered Girl' Licensed in English; Omnibus Release September 2024

On February 14, Seven Seas Entertainment announced that it has licensed the popular Yuri romance manga Handsome Girl and Sheltered Girl (Ikemen Girl to Hakoiri Musume). The manga is written by Mocchi Au Lait and illustrated by majoccoid.

The publisher describes the series:

When Okuma Satomi’s friend seeks her help wrangling guys for a crossdressing cafe, Satomi winds up with a boyfriend! Sort of. After asking her handsome and aloof classmate, Kanda Mizuki, to help out in the cafe, Mizuki agrees, but on one condition: the two of them must go on a date. Satomi eagerly agrees, delighted to have such a good-looking guy interested in her, but Mizuki realizes that Satomi has completely misunderstood something crucial: Mizuki is a girl! Will this case of mistaken identity blossom into something beautiful, or will the truth leave both girls brokenhearted?

Handsome Girl and Sheltered Girl was originally serialized in Comic REX from September 2019 until its conclusion in October 2020. It was based on a work posted on Twitter before being picked up for serialization. Ichijinsha published two collected volumes of Handsome Girl and Sheltered Girl in Japanese.

Despite its lack of an international release, the manga quickly became popular with English-speaking audiences and is highly ranked on cataloging websites such as MyAnimeList and Anime-Planet.

Creator Mocchi Au Lait is a pair known for their Yuri manga works, many of which have a shared world and lose connections. In addition to Handsome Girl and Sheltered Girl, they have contributed to several anthologies, including Yuri Drill, Syrup (licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment), and the official Yuri Is My Job! Anthology. Many of their works are independently released online. Their other serialized works include Yamitsuki and the currently running adult comedy series Warui ga Watashi wa Yuri ja Nai (Sorry, I'm Not Yuri) from Kadokawa.

Illustrator majoccoid, also known by the circle name Haratama, has also contributed to several manga anthologies and is currently the illustrator of Shimesaba's romance manga series Tayutau Kemuri wa Tsukamenai, which is serialized in Comic HOWL.

The complete series of Handsome Girl and Sheltered Girl will be released in English in September 2024 as a single omnibus under Seven Seas' GL label.

Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yara ka Ep 10 (Finale) Stray Thoughts

Last week, the guys tried to figure out what a long-distance relationship might look like for them and it wasn’t great. Soga decided he’d rather leave his job than give up on this relationship, and Sakae felt guilty about Soga giving up on a big goal and an important promise. We left at Sakae ruining the sanctity of the sauna by initiating a breakup with Soga.

No! Don’t mention the sauna in the breakup speech! I’ll cry!

I actually liked the reasons given for this breakup and the execution of the scene. Because they’re in the sauna, they are essentially bare before each other. It’s a cool choice to highlight the emotional honesty.

I chatted with @lurkingshan and @ginnymoonbeam earlier and have to agree that it’s nice to see a show delving into the immediate aftermath of a breakup. Seeing Sakae struggle with work tasks because he’s distracted works well, as does Soga still remembering key details he had plans for Sakae.

I feel like sending a gift to your ex is a well-intentioned bad idea.

I love everything about this video message and gift. I love how awkward and nerdy Soga is. I love everyone heckling him. I love Kanda taking the glass back and declaring it innocent. I loved Sakae’s smitten smirk by the whole video.

Suddenly Mizuki. I still don’t trust this demon twink.

Hold on, Mizuki is giving good advice. Nevermind, I’m back on his side again.

Not the senpai café callback!! I’m okay with this development. I wish Mizuki and Ryuji the best.

I have really enjoyed the friendship between Sakae and Kaname the whole show.

Good job, Kanda. You have been a real one the entire show.

This joke about them both missing each other and going to the other’s city only works because of a robust transportation network. If you want your populace to fall in love, you need a fast and frequent intercity rail network supported by robust local networks.

The neutral ground conversation is kinda weird, but I’ll let it pass as a way to show them trying to find a compromise because they miss each other.

Soga is such an incredible character. “We’re definitely gonna fuck tonight, so let’s clear things up first.”

There it is: the blinding flash of love.

Final Verdict: 7.5, I Like the Characters. I want to like this show a lot more than I do. I think part of it may be that I’m missing some of the cultural competency around the differences between Tokyo and Osaka. I liked that both Sakae and Soga were coming out of important romantic relationships that didn’t work, and how that also complicated some of the cultural baggage they were bringing to their romance. I hoped we would spend more time with them working through that, and also that we’d involve food more consistently. Overall, I’m not sure I followed the romance of this easily despite really liking the entire cast and some of its ideas. Much of this is probably on me, because I was perhaps looking for something else in the show, which wanted to be about how change was still possible for adults.

Handsome Girl and Sheltered Girl is a two volume comedy series written by Mochi Au Lait and illustrated by majoccoid about a girl falling for a handsome guy ("guy") in her class.

debated if it was worth warning for, but mistaken identity-related consent(?) issues; for most of the series, oogawa is under the impression that she's dating a man. it's played for laughs and she isn't hurt when she finds out kanda is a girl, but it may be uncomfortable for some.

minor warning for cisnormativity(?) <- kanda "proves" her gender by taking her clothes off, which has obvious not-great gender implications. i wouldn't say anything outright transphobic happens in the series, but figured it was worth giving a heads up.

probably worth mentioning that it pulls the identifying as LI-sexual over being queer trope, though i personally give it a pass because i got aspec vibes from them but. thin ice.

They're not gonna celebrate. In fact, you might bring some of them with you. I'm mostly worried about Kanade. She's already kinda lost her dad, who was basically her only close family, and made the promise to save you, can't imagine that's gonna do wonders for her mental health. That's not to say Mizuki and Ena aren't suffering similar problems, far from it, I just think Kanda could be the one that's shaken up the most. After all, you were the one who pointed out how much everyone wanted to disappear
