i updated and rearranged my lolita physical media collection as i was recently able to complete two sets: my english "gothic & lolita bibles" at the top (still a long way to go for the japanese volumes you see sandwiched in between) and my "gothic lolita & punk brand books" at the bottom! for brand catalogs that are a bit too flimsy without a solid spine, loose pages, flyers, prints, postcards and such; i added in a file folder to give them a little extra protection.
it looks a little strange stacked vertically, but this temporary setup until i move was the solution i found after some trial and error. the classic horizontal "bookcase" presentation of the magazines was far too much weight and pressure for my unstable shelves and caused an extremely loud and heavy avalanche. thankfully i survived with just a bruise, but more importantly.. none of my books were too hurt! reorganizing them all over again from the beginning after the fact was a bit tedious, though.
i'm especially looking forward to reading the three acquisitions pictured above given that finding english lolita media has proven quite difficult.

I’m reading the novel version of Kamikaze Girls and I don’t think I was prepared for how wacky it is, like 100x wackier than the movie. Genuinely surprised Poe's Law hasn’t made people take this seriously, like it’s hilarious because this book just throws out the most ridiculous lines you’ve ever read

This was intended to be an essay about chivalry—its history, its uses, its various incarnations—medieval violence, the Romantic reinterpretation, the ideal of chivalry in the American South and its attendant lynch mobs. I would have talked about the chivalric triad: Knight, Innocent, Enemy—the way the Innocent serves as a fulcrum for the Knight to enact violence against the Enemy—the iterations of this triad in any number of places in our society, from the so-called sheepdog mentality trained into our police to the legion of revenge-fantasy Taken clones. I would have talked about the way Kierkegaard in Fear and Trembling incorporates chivalry with the sacrifice of Isaac, the theology of self-justified suffering that comes from that. I would have talked at some length about various portrayals of lesbian chivalry in media—Revolutionary Girl Utena, the Locked Tomb books, Signalis—how they use it, what they say about it, and whether at the end there is anything worth salvaging from this intrinsically violent way of relating to the world, to others, to oneself, to God.
I think a version of that essay might still be worth writing someday, but right now, there's something I need to talk about much more urgently. Right now, there's something I suspect you might desperately need to hear. Today I'm going to talk about Godzilla.
GODZILLA SAVED MY LIFE: A Polemic
Godzilla Minus One (2024) takes place in Japan in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. Its protagonist, Koichi, is a failed kamikaze pilot who in the opening scenes is repeatedly excoriated for his cowardice and dereliction of duty. When he returns home to a bombed and desolate Tokyo, his bereaved neighbor tells him, if people like you had done their duty, this would not have happened. The film spends the rest of its runtime doggedly refuting this idea. It says, out loud, that the relentless calculus of sacrifice that turns men into things to be spent has no place in this world, that it is needless and cruel. It is not subtle about this point. It is not trying to be.
I saw this movie in its black and white version in theaters in February, on the last day of its run. Its version of Godzilla inspires in me both terror and near-religious awe. It looms over the film, an echo both of the devastation of the war and of Koichi's guilt and shame, its presence inviting—demanding—the final consummation of the mission he abandoned.
I wept in that theater. I gripped my friend's hand and I sobbed. This is unlike me (unless I'm watching Gunbuster), and it took four days for me to work out why this Godzilla movie had affected me so profoundly.
arkansas kamikaze
and she looked, and behold! a beast rose from the sea, and against the beast he breathed glory in a Zero dive. his beatified smile shone from the wreck of the Little Rock Planned Parenthood clinic. and a great wind blew out of heaven, and she woke
and made breakfast, and watched her son wholly absorbed in Bonhoeffer, found her lipstick worn down to the nub for practice stigmata, and saw for a moment the dove descending, the tongue of fire over his head.
The thing about being raised in a right-wing fundamentalist family is that you are from birth being prepared to be a weapon, or a martyr, and there is really no difference between those two things. If my mother had had her way, I would have gone to a tiny far-right college and studied law for the sole and explicit purpose of getting Roe v. Wade overturned. She would, I believe, have settled for me bombing an abortion clinic. Certainly it would have been easier for her to reconcile with that than with what I became instead.
The other thing about being raised in a right-wing fundamentalist family is, some things stick. And it's very hard to notice, as your beliefs and values and identity undergo radical changes, that there is still a whisper in you that believes in the power of the glorious death, of the ultimate virtue of strapping explosives to your chest and walking into the halls of the Enemy. And when you feel helpless, when you watch systems and institutions that ought to prevent atrocities instead encourage them, that whisper grows louder and louder and louder.
Watching Koichi fly his last mission, watching him an instant before impact eject, and live—watching everyone live through the final confrontation because they had all rejected the calculus of sacrifice—allowed me to see also for the very first time this parasitic idea that had grown coiled inside me since infancy, allowed me to see where it had come from, its whole monstrous lineage, and then it allowed me to take hold of it and pull it out.
Twenty days later, Aaron Bushnell set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, in protest of the still-ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. He was, like me, raised in a right-wing fundamentalist environment. He was, like one of my siblings, a member of the US Armed Forces radicalized by his experiences and his own conscience. People called him a hero and martyr—on this very site, in responses to the excellent Crimethinc piece circulating at the time, I saw people saying they felt like they should follow suit (even though the article in question explicitly and repeatedly warned against it!) As if the loss of a person of conscience and conviction could be anything other than a tragedy, as if anyone in power choosing to support the genocide could regard the death of one of their own soldiers as anything other than what soldiers are for, as if the moral response to a genocide could ever be to add another corpse to the mountain—and still I saw people lionizing him, praising his courage and his sacrifice, all but telling people to follow in his footsteps.
No. Aaron Bushnell was a suicide. He lived his whole life within organizations that taught him that he could purchase more with his death than he could ever accomplish with his life, and while we may praise his conscience, we can only mourn his loss and the grievous error that led him to it.
This is the thing about learning to see this parasite: you begin to see it everywhere. Our history for millennia is awash with human sacrifice: Abraham and Isaac, Jephthah and his nameless daughter, Agamemnon and Iphigenia, the crucifixion of Jesus—and later, litanies, row upon row of dead saints, stories of glorious last stands. The courageous martyred dead: blood and corpses, only and always, to Moloch.
In light of the recent US election, perhaps many of my American readers are feeling shock or horror or despair. I understand, and without blame, with love and gentleness, I tell you that this is because you have not correctly understood the scope of the problem. You imagine a discontinuity between the liberal version of American capitalism and imperialism and the fascist version of the same. No such discontinuity exists. Things will no doubt be different for us here in the US than they would otherwise be, and probably worse, but there is no distinction to be made between the genocide of yesterday and the genocide of tomorrow. The enemy is the same. The work is the same.
Above all else, this is to warn you: when you do this work, when you look for a place you can put your shoulder to the wheel, there will be people who want to spend their lives—or yours—like coin to purchase some great change immediately. Perhaps they mean well, and helplessness and desperation drives them to act without regard for the consequences. Perhaps they do not mean well. Do not follow these people. Perhaps they merely expect you to go to prison, and have no plan for how to support you after that. This is barely different. It is far better for you to languish in useless liberal nonprofits which will accomplish nothing of value than to attempt radical direct action with people with correct politics and no forethought, and end up dead or imprisoned—but these are not the only two options. Aaron Bushnell cannot ever again do anything for anyone. You can.
This is as much as I know for certain. I love you. Don't die.
-------
End Notes
It would not be unreasonable to ask me, in light of what I've said here about martyrdom, what I think of it in other cultural contexts, especially since a similar word is often used to refer to e.g. Palestinian people murdered by Israeli soldiers. The answer is nothing at all. Such people get to use whatever words they want to salvage whatever meaning and comfort they can.
Godzilla Minus One, as effective a movie as it is, was not solely responsible for the scales falling from my eyes. It was an important part of the process, but I doubt it would have sufficed on its own were I not in community with people I trust and talk to about such things. "Godzilla and also my trusted friends saved my life" is, alas, a worse title.
There will be a part two to this. Part one seemed more urgent.

While I was reorganizing my books I found the kamikaze girls poster I mentioned having on my wall in the lolita quiz thing a few weeks ago.
So I probably got this about 15-20 years ago and it was on my wall in my bedroom at my parent's house until I moved out. Except. Kamikaze girls was facing the wall. I had the Absolutely Boyfriend side facing out.
...I didn't even really like absolute boyfriend that much, I just read it because it was in shoujo beat. I had started covering my walls with home-printed sailor moon posters and the few anime posters I got from In Power magazine when I was in middle school and I just continued to add random anime posters I got for free from magazines and conventions when I was in my late teens.
But yeah, I have this poster from around the US release of kamikaze girls... way before I cared about lolita fashion, lol.

gonna ramble to you about books
The protagonist of The Book Thief, Liesel Meminger, is a young girl, i think like 12? When the book starts? Somehwere between 10-12 and it takes place in Molching, Germany (a made up town, basically Munich essentially) in 1939
So it starts with her on a train with her younger brother and her mom. Her mom cant provide for her children anymore so liesel and her brother are being adopted. During the train ride, liesel’s brother dies so they get off at the next stop and buries him and has a funeral for him then it continues on where she eventually is picked up by her new family
Her adoptive family is an older couple with two kids but their kids are adults and live away from them. The woman is very stern and strict and the man is a bit distant cus work but overall pretty warm.
So liesel meets some neighborhood kids and she automatically isnt liked, and gets into a fight with them. One of them, Rudy Steiner, looked up to Jesse Owens a lot
So Liesel and Rudy have a rough relationship, often getting into fights, though it eventually just becomes Rudy trying to impress Liesel and they become frenemies and then eventually friends. Liesel ends up going to school, and since she is behind from her peers, struggles quite a bit. Rudy at this point is in the Hitler Youth program
Nazis come through and burn and break jewish owned places, raid houses to arrest every jew they can find (and people hiding them) and they collect a bunch of stuff (everything they can find) that was owned by jewish people to throw in a big pile and burn
Liesel is there during that, and she ends up stealing a book that was still pretty together, save for being a bit singed. Her adoptive father finds out and just gets onto her but ends up helping her hide the book so she can keep it
We then are introduced to a new character, Max Vandenberg, a jew in hiding. He eventually makes it to the house with liesel and her adoptive parents, to which they end up hiding him in their basement
They dont talk much at all (since they.. really cant-) but over time liesel and max form a sort of bond
Liesel also helps with doing the neighborhoods laundry and sometimes go to work with her father where shes sometimes given champagne
Her and rudy eventually find a group of kids who steal good from a nearvybfarmer and join the group though they accidentally get caught and drop the boy which leads to a massice fight but then its ok!
Theres also something with liesel and the mayors wife?? I forgot but theres something
So then the children of the parents come home for holidays, and the son is a nazi soldier, so tensions are high. Though nothing bad happens!
Then a group of nazis later comes by and checks all the houses to which max was almost foujd but he wasnt!
Liesel also suffers from nightmares? I remember that
Um rudy ends up dying to which liesel realizes she liked rudy back then (cus he had confessed to her awhile back by this point) so she feels lost there having also lost really her only friend
Theres another historical ficiton book i read, When My Name Was Keoko, which takes place in korea during world war 2 and is told from a little girl with somw family issues where the japanese come and take over korea and make everyone change their names and live on very strict rules otherwise theyre killed and the girl’s brother was drafted to be a kamikaze (but he survives) and they live to be rescued after all the horrible stuff
2 series i love
In order theres: City of Ghosts, Tunnel of Bones, Bridge of Souls
The main character is a girl who almost died (and kind of did) but was saved right before she fully died so she can now see ghosts! And she can see The Veil which is what she calls the fabric between life and death because shes living with one foot on each side. Her best friend is a ghost and her parents are paranormal investigators
They travel around the world for her parents show and in each book she faces a ghost (each stronger than the last) that she has to stop and in the second book she makes a living friend who has the same thing and they work together (and she comes back in the third book to help as well) and shit gets crazy
Then the other series in order is: Girls of Paper and Fire, Girls of Storm and Shadow, Girls of Fate and Fury
So um the protagnist is a girl who is recruited to be a ‘paper girl’ for the king which is basically a prostitute, and she meets other girls there who she befriends one and then has a secret relationship with another
Things get.. crazy. Her and her gf kill the king which puts a bounty over their heads and they run and then meet up with a group and train and then thigns get rocky between her and her gf (especially when her gf’s ex comes into the picture) so they have a break up but get back together after one of them almost dies
Then one of the people in the group does die (i cried</3) and things happen and they seek an alliance with another kingdom and her gf turns out to be the last living person from this all mighth powerful tribe and then yada yada yada i need to read the books again and then i think decent ending!
ooo fascinating :> those all sound like good books :D

Hello Theo how are you? Is your back okay?
I have a holiday for more than a month and I want to read books and/or stories in it. Do you have any books , stories or film that you recommend me to read on my vacation? I have been feeling depressed lately and I am want to occupy myself with reading / movies ( that are not sad)
What will Chrollo and Feitan do if I disturb them while sleeping, such as pulling the blanket, crossing my legs on them, snoring, etc.
You aren't obliged to answer my questions and I fully understand , Hearing that you're okay alone is enough🌹thank you
It's a little better, but, probably at least 1-2 months of daily stretching to get back to where I was before! Thank you for asking!
Lemme dig out some fav movies & books that aren't super sad, although some do have sad moments in them, most things I like do:

Rosaline (2022)
Kamikaze Girls
Sorry I'm on mobile now idk how to format uHhHhh:
Mirror Mirror, Labyrinth, Troop Beverly Hills, Spy, The Heat, Romy And Michele's high school reunion, Austenland, Peter Pan 2003, Kate and Leopold...

RULES:
All fictional women from a category will be randomized, and put into polls
Whoever gets 50 votes automatically proceeds into the next round. There won't be only one winner for each poll!
We will do one category at the time. We'll start with books.
We'll decide on a winner of each category, and then whoever had the most votes, will proceed into the Final 10.
I'll calculate how many votes each woman got, so that at the end of the voting, you can see how many other women also adored your favourite ones :)
This also means that once you vote, if there's someone else you also want to see in the finals, you can reblog and let your followers know who already has enough votes, and who needs more in order to proceed. I'll also sometimes reblog polls announcing that a certain character has made the cut, and now others need your attention. We're trying to see which ones are loved and adored enough to actually get a lot of votes, even with competition. The voting starts at the end of nominations!

10. decora kei
decora kei is one of the most vibrant and visually striking subcultures to emerge from Japan's harajuku district. known for its playful, maximalist aesthetic, decorated kei is all about layering accessories, bright colors, and a childlike sense of fun. here's a detailed breakdown of decora kei.
origins and development
harajuku and street fashion: decora kei originated in the late 1990s and early 2000s in tokyo harajuku district, which has long been a hotspot for experimental and avant-garde street fashion. the term decorated is derived from decoration, reflecting the styles emphasis on excessive adornment
influences: decora kei draws inspiration from various sources, including 1990s Japanese pop culture, childrens toys, and candy colors. the style is heavily influenced by a desire to express individuality and creativity through fashion, often in a way that feels spontaneous and unrestrained
key figures and media: pioneers like model and singer kyary pamyu pamyu helped popularize decora kei both within Japan and internationally. the style was frequently featured in Japanese street fashion like FRUiTS and KERA, which documented harajuku most eclectic and colorful trends.
key motifs
over the top accessories: the most defining characteristic of decora kei is the sheer number of accessories worn. this can include dozens of hair clips, bows, bracelets, necklaces, and rings. the goal is to cover as much surface area as possible with colorful, playful decorations.
bright and layered clothing: decora outfits are typically built around layers of bright, clashing colors and patterns. t shirts, skirts, and leggings in neon hues or with playful prints such as polka dots, stripes, or with cartoon characters, are common. the more layers and the more mismatched the patterns, the better.
hair and makeup: hair in decora kei is often styles in pigtails, buns, or simply left down, but always decorated with a multitude of clips, bows, and headbands. hair colors range from natural to neon, with some enthusiasts opting for wigs to achieve the desired looks. makeup is typically fun and colorful, with heavy blush, pastel eyeshadow, and glitter. stickers and face gems are often applied to the cheeks and around the eyes for extra decoration.
toys and plushies: carrying or incorporating toys ND plushies into the outfit is common in decora kei. these can be worn as accessories, attached to bas, or even sewn into clothing.
masks and band aids: surgical masks often decorated in bright colors and bandaids placed decoratively on the face are also popular in decora kei, these elements add to the cute feel of the style.
music
the decora kei aesthetic is often associated with upbeat and playful music genres. j-pop, particularly the works of kyary pamyu pamyu, who is known for her colorful and whimsical style, aligns perfectly with decora kei. "shibuya-kei" music, a subgenre of pop that blends electronic, jazz, and pop influences, is also popular among decora enthusiasts. here are artists I suggest.
kyary pamyu pamyu
dempagumi.inc
perfume
poppy
charli xcx (debatable but I think her music matches the colors a lot for some reason)
halcali
babymetal
tommy fenruary6
shiina ringo
momoiro clover x
movies
so decora kei doesn't have a direct connection to movies, but films that have lots of color, fun, whimcy elements resonate with the aesthetic. animated films, mostly studio ghibli or other light-hearted anime films, align well with the playful and nostalgic elements of decora kei!!! movies that also feature fantasy or hyper stylized visuals like Alice in wonderland, especially the animated verion from the 50s, also work well with the decora aesthetic! here are 10 movies I suggest
kamikaze girls (2004)
funky forest: the first contact (2005)
love and pop (1998)
suicide club (2001)
the taste of tea (2004)
nana (2005)
sakuran (2006)
cutie honey (2004)
tokyo tribe (2014)
the night is short, walk on girl (2017)
books and other media
manga and anime: manga and anime that has cute, colorful, and slightly chaotic worlds are popular among decora kei fans. mangas/animes like "cardcaptor sakura", and "sailor moon", embody the magical and whimsical aspects of the style
fashion magazines: Japanese fashion magazines like FRUiTS and KERA were instrumental in documenting and spreading decora kei fashion. these magazines often featured street snaps of people wearing decora fashion, offering inspiration and showcasing the latest trends within the community
social media: plat forms like Instagram, TikTok, and of course, Tumblr are vital for decora kei enjoyers. these platforms allow fans to share their looks, connect with others, and find inspirations. decora kei communities often participate in dress up days too!!!!! so cute!!!
inspo
overall, decorated is a maximalist, vibrant fashion style that thrives on excess and creativity. its characterize dby a LOT of accessories, bright colors, and a playful, childlike sense of fun. the style s about expressing individuality and joy through fashion, often a way that feels like freedom. decorated kei celebrates the whimsical and fantastical, creating amazing outfits that are both chaotic and charming!!!!!
hello everyone!!!11111111 I know I haven't been online as of late. in early August, my boyfriend tragically and suddenly passed so I decided to take a long break from all social medias. thank you for understanding...
make sure to follow for more deep dive sinto fashion, like, and reblog if you'd like!!!! click my questions box in my bio to suggest a style as well!! that's all for now! TTYL
