Water, water, everywhere: Andritz pumps solving irrigation problem in India
In India two thirds of the agricultural land depend on the monsoon or regular rainfall. Irrigation has a long tradition in Indian agriculture – it was first mentioned in an Indian song in the year 2000 b.c., however the World Bank confirmed in 2010 that only 35 percent of the total agricultural land in India has reliable irrigation. This problem is intensifying more and more as a result of the periods of extremely high temperatures now recurring annually. Worst hit are the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the southern part of the Indian subcontinent. The economy in Andhra Pradesh and in the state of Telangana, newly formed in the northwestern part of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, is largely dependent on agriculture. Sixty percent of the population in Andhra Pradesh alone, the “Rice Bowl of India”, live off the land. Annual record-breaking heat waves In the summer of 2017, temperatures in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, rose to a new ten-year record level of 43 degrees in the shade. This was the third heat wave in succession in the past three years. As reported in the Indian media, various studies have shown that periods with such extremely high temperatures are no longer occurring only once in a hundred years, but can now be expected once every ten years. This creates problems – not just in irrigating agricultural land. The related crop losses also result in negative economic developments and human tragedy. During the second heat wave in 2016 alone, just under 1.4 million farmers left this region. And at least 176 people lost their lives. The sacred water
Fig. 1: A special feature of these pumps is that they are similar to turbines due to their impressive size, with a Francis impeller of 3.5 m, a total weight of 130 t up to 200 t per pump, and an spiral outlet diameter of 5.5 m, large enough to park a truck comfortably. With the Jala Yagnam project, the local government already took measures some years ago to solve the irrigation problem. The Jala Yagnam project, which translates as “worship of water” or “sacred water”, comprises a series of irrigation projects of different magnitudes. Around 3.3 million hectares (8.2 million acres) of agricultural land are to be irrigated with the aid of this project. The Kaleshwaram project is one of the largest sub-projects. It is designed to store approximately 4,7 trillion liters of water (169 TMC (one thousand million cubic feet)) in order to irrigate 736,345 hectares of agricultural land in Telangana. For this project, a dam is to be built near the village of Kaleshwaram downstream of the point where the Pranahita flows into the Godavari River. The districts of Karimnagar, Medak, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, and Ranga Reddy are to be irrigated from there. The project comprises several pumping stations with reservoirs. All in all, the water is transported over a height of 500 meters and a distance of 200 kilometers. This is the first multi-stage lift irrigation project of this magnitude and complexity in India. It also contains the longest water transport tunnel in Asia, extending over a distance of 81 kilometers and connecting the dam to a reservoir. An irrigation project of this kind is unique, not just in India, but worldwide. Such infrastructure developments are awarded turnkey as so-called EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) projects in India. The EPC contract partners are usually large Indian infrastructure companies. In this type of contract, the basic requirement is that key components – in irrigation projects these are the pumps and motors – are only supplied by qualified companies with a healthy balance sheet and good financial standing. In the Kaleshwaram project, the Indian infrastructure company Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL) is acting as EPC contract partner. Based on a joint overall solution for turnkey delivery of the key components – pumps and motors – Andritz and its long-standing partner ABB were awarded the contract. While ABB Finland is supplying the motors, Andritz will manufacture 27 vertical volute pumps for three pumping stations. The returning pump supplier
Fig. 2: Andritz will manufacture 27 vertical volute pumps for three pumping stations, each with an efficiency of up to 90 %. International technology group Andritz is a world market leader for the supply of plants, equipment, and services for hydropower stations. This portfolio also includes high-quality large and standard pumps used in infrastructure projects for irrigation, desalination, and drinking water supplies, for example. The Andritz Group’s Pumps division is supporting the Jala Yagnam infrastructure project in a total of eleven sub-projects. These include delivery of three vertical volute pumps for the Bheema project to irrigate 820 km² (203,000 acres) of land and five volute pumps for the Kalwakurthy pumping station with a total flow rate of 115 cubic meters per second. The pumps for the Kaleshwaram project are customized vertical volute pumps, each with an efficiency of up to 90 percent. The special feature of these pumps is that they are similar to turbines because of their size and integrated guide vane mechanism. The guide vane mechanism is adjusted by means of a hydraulic servomotor to suit the changing water level. This can achieve a large increase in efficiency compared to normal pumps and lower energy consumption when the pumps are started up if the guide vane mechanism is closed. In addition, a new hydraulic system with a particularly high specific speed of 400 NSQ and 600 NSQ (a measurement describing the ratio between flow rate, speed, and delivery head) was developed for the pumps in the first and second stations, taking account of the circumstances there. In addition, the weight of the impeller was optimized and the draft tube was downsized. Depending on the plant concerned, a single pump achieves heads between 25 and 107 meters and handles a flow rate of 31.1 to 83 cubic meters per second. The largest head achieved is 107 meters, which is approximately the height of the Cathedral Church of Milan, while the pumps with the highest flow rate of 83 cubic meters per second could completely fill the Cheops Pyramid in Cairo, Egypt, within eight hours.
Fig. 3: The Kaleshwaram project is one of the largest sub-projects, designed to store about 4.7 trillion liters of water in order to irrigate 740,000 ha. Besides design and delivery of the pumps and spare parts for them, installation and commissioning work on site will also be supervised by Andritz personnel. Completion of the entire project is scheduled for 2020. Great hopes are being pinned on the success of this infrastructure project. Harnessing sufficient water reserves for reliable irrigation of agricultural land will also bring about a long-term change for the better in the lives of farmers and everyone else in India’s most populous state of Telangana. Harish Rao, who is presenting the Budget for the first time as Finance Minister since the TRS swept into power in 2018, began his speech with a reference to the 'overall economic slowdown gripping the Indian economy.' Stating that there were delays and shortfalls in the release of Telanganarsquo;s share in Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) and GST compensation, Harish Rao said that "the growth of the statersquo;s own revenues in 2019-20 (till the end of February) is estimated to be at 6.3%, much below the growth of 16.1% achieved in 2018-19." He added that there was a slight decline in the growth of GSDP, from 14.3 % in 2018-19 to 12.6% in 2019-20, due to an economic slowdown being witnessed by the country. "However, the decline is much lower than that of the decline in national GDP growth from 11.2% to 7.5 % in the corresponding period. Thus, to a great extent, the state economy has withstood the shocks of the economic slowdown across the country and maintained a double digit growth rate," Harish Rao said. The Telangana government also said that agriculture and allied sectors recorded an 'impressive growth' in 2019-20 and also highlighted that the per capita income in the state was greater than the per capita income of the country. "Per capita income for 2019-20 for Telangana is estimated at Rs.2,28,216 whereas the per capita income of our country is Rs.1,35,050. The progress of our state can be understood by the fact that the per capita income of Telangana is Rs.93,166 higher than the per capita income of the country," Harish Rao said. Telangana Chief Minister calls for speedy completion of Kaleshwaram project
Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrashekhar Rao on Saturday urged his administration to put Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) on a fast track as all required permissions and funds have been approved.
Holding a review meeting of the project here, Rao exhorted officials to finish the project at the earliest, as land acquisition and other related issues have been resolved and there were no obstacles left.
Only environmental clearance is left, which would come soon, he added.
"Forest clearances have been given and the environment clearances are in its last phase. Besides providing Rs 25,000 crore in the budget, another Rs. 20,000 crore has been arranged through banks and other financial institutions," Rao said.
Terming the project as the lifeline of Telangana, he said, "This project will solve water problems in seven districts and supply drinking water to Hyderabad."
At an estimated cost of Rs 80,500 crore, the KLIP is the costliest irrigation project taken up by a state. Once completed, it will irrigate 7,38,851 hectares in the erstwhile districts of Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal, Medak, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy.
The KLIP is a reworked version of 'Pranahitha-Chevella Lift Irrigation Scheme', which was taken up by the Congress government of united Andhra Pradesh in 2007. Now, the project has a storage capacity of 148 tmc ft as opposed to 16 tmc ft in the original plan.

via Today Bharat nbsp; Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) expanded his Council of Ministers on Sunday. While former minister and KCRrsquo;s son KT Rama Rao and nephew Harish Rao were inducted into the cabinet, four new faces including two women were accommodated. The four new ministers are Sabitha Indra Reddy, Gangula Kamalakar, Satyavati Rathod and Puvvada Ajay Kumar. With their induction, the Council of Ministers has now increased to 17 from 11. Sabitha and Satyavati are the only two women in KCRrsquo;s cabinet. All six ministers were sworn in on Sunday. This is first expansion after 11 members were inducted into the Telangana cabinet this February. K Tarakarama Rao (KTR), who was left out of the cabinet after TRS returned to power in December 2018, has been made Minister of IT, Municipal Administration and Urban Development. These were very same portfolios KTR handled during KCRrsquo;s first term. As IT Minister, KTR is credited with bringing several industrial and IT projects to the state of Telangana. Following TRSrsquo;s sweep in the 2018 polls, he was made working president of the party following the elections In 2009, KTR made his electoral debut, winning from Siricilla. KTR went on to win in 2014 elections as well, while the 2018 polls saw him win with a margin over 1 lakh votes. KCR, however, chose to depute him to party affairs following TRSrsquo;s thumping win. Harish Rao has been made Finance Minister. He was former irrigation minister between 2014 and 2018. A proteacute;geacute; of KCR and the founding member of TRS, Harish Rao has never lost an election and was elected MLA from Siddipet for the sixth consecutive time. Harish Rao is credited with being the driving force behind the commissioning of the ambitious Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project, during his previous tenure. Though the leader enjoys a strong support among TRS cadre, there has been speculation of a rift between cousins KTR and Harish Rao. While Harish was touted to be the immediate successor to KCR, KTRrsquo;s return from US in 2006 and entry into politics shifted the narrative. However the two leaders have dismissed the speculations as rumours, with both reiterating that they lsquo;grew up as brothersrsquo;. KTR and Harish Rao's re-induction is being dubbed as the CM's attempt to rejuvenate the government while the induction of fresh faces is seen as a pacification of the respective communities they hail from. Sabitha Indra Reddy, a former stalwart of Telangana Congress, has been allocated the Education portfolio, which was earlier vested with G Jagadish Reddy. Jagadish has been made Energy Minister. Jagadish had come under fire earlier this year following the Intermediate (+2 ) results. Around 20 students killed themselves following alleged mismanagement and flaws in the results. Several student groups and opposition parties had sought his resignation. Sabitha had defected along with her son Karthik Reddy to the ruling party in March this year. A key leader in Ranga Reddy district near Hyderabad, Sabitha Reddy was Home Minister in the YS Rajasekhara Reddy government. She was elected from Maheswaram Assembly constituency on a Congress ticket last year. Sabitha entered politics after her husbandrsquo;s death in 2000, and has held multiple portfolios in the state cabinet in her political career spanning almost two decades. Gangula Kamalakar, a three-time MLA from Karimnagar, has been allocated BC Welfare, Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs. Gangula hails from Munnuru Kapu community, which is having a significant populace in the Karimnagar and Nizamabad belt.Nizamabad MP and daughter of KCR K Kavita lost her seat to BJP's Arvind Dharmapuri, who also comes from Munnuru Kapu community. TRS's Vinod Kumar who was Karimnagar MP lost to BJP's Bandi Sanjay, who is also from Munnuru Kapu community, in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. Etela Rajendar, who is already holding the portfolio of Health and Family Welfare also heads the Huzurabad constituency in Karimnagar. Satyavati Rathod, another woman MLC hailing from the Tribal community has also been made Minister for ST Welfare and Women and Child Welfare. Satyavati started off her political career as Sarpanch of Gundratimadugu of Khammam 1996. Puvvada Ajay Kumar, the MLA of Palair constituency, has been given Transport. Belonging to a Congress family, Ajay Kumar is said to be close to the party working president KTR. The Ministers oath taking ceremony held in the presence of Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and CM KCR along with senior officers and Ministers. nbsp;

via Today Bharat Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi and sought the President's assent for a bill, enhancing quantum of reservation for BCs, SCs and STs. In his second meeting with Modi in less than two months, KCR discussed various pending issues relating to the state. He sought the President's assent to the bill for increasing quantum of reservation in educational institutions and government jobs for backward classes, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The bill passed by the state legislature last year was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs for President's assent. According to a statement from the Chief Minister's office in Hyderabad, during the hour-long meeting Rao discussed 11 issues and submitted letters pertaining to them. KCR, as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief is popularly known, told the prime minister that the need to increase the percentage of reservations for SCs, STs and BCs arose as the proportion of the population of these sections increased consequent to the formation of Telangana State. Under the bill passed by the state legislature, quota for STs was increased to 10 percent from the existing 6 percent, while that for BC-E category (the backward sections among the Muslim community) increased to 12 percent from the existing 4 percent. The total reservations in the state, consequently, will go up to 62 percent from the existing 50 percent. KCR brought to Modi's notice that while capping the total quantum of reservations at 50 percent, the Supreme Court had also clarified that, if it should exceed 50 percent, the State shall make out a case showing compelling circumstances for exceeding the limit. He pointed out that Tamil Nadu is providing 69% reservation in the State. The TRS chief also sought the Centre's approval for new zonal system in Telangana pertaining to the government employment in the state. He called for immediate steps to amend the Presidential Order of 1975 to facilitate implementation of the new zonal system created keeping in view the requirements of the new state. As the issue of separate High Court is pending since creation of Telangana in 2014, KCR urged the prime minister to expedite the process. He sought immediate steps for establishing a high court in residuary state of Andhra Pradesh so that the High Court at Hyderabad exclusively caters to the needs of Telangana. KCR reiterated the demand for central grant of Rs 20,000 crores for Kaleshwaram Project being built on Godavari river. He said on completion, it would be the life line of Telangana as it is designed to irrigate 18 lakh acres. The total cost of the project if Rs 80,000 crore.nbsp; The Chief Minister also took up issues such as early completion of pending railway projects and transfer of defence land in Secunderabad for construction of new Secretariat building. KCR has been considering the land in Gymkhana Ground and Bison Polo Grounds, for constructing a new Secretariat, Legislature and a cultural centre on the premises. Critics have suggested that the Chief Minister is shifting the building, only to make it 'vastu-compliant'. Further, protesters claim that the move would kill a crucial lung space in Secunderabad. Despite being faced with several protests and stiff opposition from activists and citizens, KCR remains uncompromising on his decision. Funds for development of backward areas, establishment of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), sanctioning Indian Institute of Information Technology at Karimnagar, and funds to develop the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) in Hyderabad as per the already approved scheme were the other key issues taken up by KCR. nbsp;

When the matter came up for hearing, the Telangana government's said that several petitions had been filed earlier and alleged that certain people were trying to stall the project. When the bench asked the petitioner as to why they didn't approach the High Court, the petitioner said it was an inter-state.nbsp; The bench said that it was not willing to hear the matter and asked the petitioner to approach the Hyderabad High Court if needed. Responding to the development, Harish Raonbsp;told reporters, ldquo;In the High Court alone, 80 cases were filed against the project. Irrespective of the number of times they have approached the courts and their pleas rejected, Congress leaders are yet to learn any lesson. Todayrsquo;s decision by the Supreme Court should make it clear that they will never succeed in their conspiracies to stop the project.rdquo; In December last year,nbsp;the Kaleshwaram project, being built across Godavari River in Telangana, received environmental clearance from the Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry, it was announced. The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) on irrigation projects gave the clearance for the project at its meeting held on December 5, according to the minutes of the meeting released in Hyderabad by the Telangana government. It envisages construction of a barrage near Medigadda village in Karimnagar district to irrigate the land in seven districts. Proposed to be completed in three years, it is also expected to stabilise the existing command area of 7.62 lakh hectares.
