2.1. Chi phí đi du lịch Úc tự túc – Xin Visa du lịch Úc

Chi phí đi du lịch Úc tự túc đầu tiên mà các bạn cần chi trả đó là xin visa. Bạn có thể đến đại sứ quán của Úc ở Hồ Chí Minh hoặc Hà Nội đề nghị xin làm visa du lịch. Chi phí xin làm visa bao gồm các chi phí tham khảo sau:

Phí nộp hồ sơ: 435.000đ với đương đơn chính và 304.000đ với đương đơn phụ thuộc

Phí thị thực: 2.390.000đ

Phí cung cấp mẫu sinh trắc học: 435.000đ với đương đơn chính và 304.000đ với đương đơn phụ.

Từ Hà Nội – Sydney, giá vé dao động từ 450 USD trở lên.

Từ Đà Nẵng – Melbourne, giá vé một chiều dao động trong khoảng 586 USD – 2000 USD.

Những chặng đến Sydney, Melbourne thường bay thẳng. Còn đi các thành phố khác như Perth hay Brisbane sẽ phải nối chuyến. Chủ yếu là quá cảnh ở Melbourne, Singapore.

2.3. Chi phí về nơi ở khi đi du lịch Úc tự túc

Chi phí cho một giường dorm ở Úc giao động tầm khoảng 20 AUD/đêm.

Chi phí cho hostel ở gần biển hay các thành phố lớn thì giá có thể lên tới 40 AUD/đêm.

Chi phí thuê phòng riêng ở trong các hostel thì giá sẽ rơi vào khoảng 80-100 AUD/ đêm

Sử dụng dịch vụ ở nhờ Couchsurfing. Đây là dịch vụ mà khi bạn đi du lịch đến một vùng đất nào đó của Úc. Và muốn giao lưu với người dân địa phương và ở nhà họ miễn phí.

Tại Úc bạn có thể có được những điều này thông qua một cộng đồng trực tuyến Couchsurfing. Nơi bạn có thể xin ở nhờ với người dân địa phương hoàn toàn miễn phí.

Mùa cao điểm: Đặt càng sớm càng tốt (chủ yếu để có nhiều lựa chọn tốt). Giá phòng cho mùa cao điểm sẽ không giảm khi cận ngày bao giờ.

Mùa thấp điểm: Đặt trước 2-4 tuần. Nếu không quan tâm sẽ ở đâu thì có thể chờ khuyến mãi hạ giá phút chót.

2.4. Chi phí về phương tiện di chuyển tại Úc tự túc

Bờ đông ở Úc đông dân cư và có tình cạnh tranh cao, nên một chuyến bay hay chuyến xe buýt giá rẻ khá khó. Do cạnh tranh giữa các hãng hàng không hạn chế, đi máy bay rất tốn kém nhưng một số nơi thì lại có giá vé máy bay rẻ hơn vé xe buýt. Glamping

12/09/2017: Sleep deprivation was what came to mind when we arose this morning. The night was hot until the early hours when it finally cooled, the mattress was a tad too hard and the two bodies on it a tad too large. Accompanying the intermittent howling of dingos through the scrub, the continual squawking of the local bird population reminded us of how lucky we were to be at one with nature. The dust between our toes and the dust within our nostrils shouted loud and clear that, “This was living”.

Everybody up!! The alarm signaled the start of the morning. It was already dawn but the sun hadn’t risen over the escarpment and the camping area was still in the throws of morning twilight. Shane was the first to stick his head out of the tent to see what was happening. Jo popped her head out and discovered a certain person had taken her thongs and therefore had to wait for that certain person to return from the toilet block so that she could retrieve them and set off across the camp ground to the toilet block for her morning ablutions (crossed legged and bursting).

A quiet commotion was taking place around the tents prior to him touching the zip. Several large brown birds, kites, were scavenging around to see what was left from the night before. The flapping of their wings the only sound they made. As soon as the zip opened they were gone.

Climbing (or rolling) awkwardly out of the tent was not only the sign for the birds to leave, but also the sign for the flies to arrive. As soon as we were out of the tent we were inundated. A quick spray with Bushman worked initially, but not for long.

While the others were in the throws of awakening, Shane and Isaac took a stroll across to the large waterhole at the base of the falls, where Jo and Soph had been yesterday. Although not intending to swim, a combination of messages posted around the pond warned of firstly, possible crocodile activity and secondly, the traditional land owners, the Jawoyn people, believed that the Rainbow Serpent, whether good or bad, lived at the bottom of the falls. With advice like that a swim was certainly out of the question.

It took only a short time to pack, maybe a half hour, no breakfast and we were off, traveling north along the Kakadu Hwy and back towards Jabiru, doing what we had intended to do yesterday. The only stop over this distance was a ten kilometre deviation to Barramundi Gorge Falls where Luke wanted to walk the two kilometre return trip to the waterhole (1 to 2 hrs suggested on the signage) but was overruled. There was no time to do it so it was onward bound. We hit Jabiru on time, refueled (at $1.80+ per litre) and kept on towards Ubirr.

The turnoff for Ubirr was only a couple of kilometres back along the Arnhem Hwy to the north, along the Oenpelli Road.

Almost forty kilometres along Oenpelli Road saw us come across a fork in the road. To the right was Cahill’s Crossing, into Arnhem Land and to the left, the Manbiyarra Border Store, located at the entrance to Ubirr. We chose the left and stopped at the store for a snack before proceeding to the rock art. The store contained some examples of Aboriginal art, fishing gear and souvenirs but nothing special. We ate the food on tables at the front of the store, protected from the mid-day sun.

Once the croissants and coffees were over it was back into the vehicles to drive the short distance to Ubirr, where we would see some of the best traditional rock art within the East Alligator region. The gallery consists of a group of rocky outcrops overlooking the Nadab floodplains. Artwork in the area depicts Aboriginal creation ancestors and story characters as well as a variety of fish and animals that provided the locals with food.

The site is representative of several artistic styles with the newer paintings frequently superimposed over the older ones. Stories told within the site take place at Mabuyu, Namarrgarn Sisters and Rainbow Serpent. Different tribes camped under the rock shelters over time, living off of the abundant resources that the floodplain provided.

Ubirr is currently overseen by neighbouring clans, the Bunitj, Manilagarr, Murrwan and Mandjurlgunj people. Entry was free except for the $100 that we paid to enter Kakadu National Park. Territorians were free of charge because, we were told, they didn’t need evacuation or medical treatment like the blow ins, foreigners or interstate visitors did. She may have had a point there.

The first area that we encountered was the painting of Mabuyu who was dragging his catch on a string after fishing when some character cut the string and stole his catch. Later that night Mayubu waited until the thieves had eaten the fish and were settled down in their cave. He then blocked the cave with a huge rock where they subsequently died. Everybody who benefited from the stolen catch were punished with death.

The next stop was the Main Gallery which was a concaved panorama of some of the food that the locals caught. Food was abundant and characterisations of the fish and animals were painted on the rocks, representing the spirits of the hunted and would help in future hunts. They included barramundi, mullet, waterfowl, wallabies, goannas, yams etc., some in x-ray style, where bones and innards are were drawn in the figures. There is also an image of a white man smoking a pipe, probably a buffalo hunter from the late 1800’s.

Not far from the Main Gallery, high up and well out of reach were sorcery figures painted by Mimi spirits. The spirits were so tall and thin that they could lift the rocks down, paint them and put them back. Although invisible to most people, they taught Aborigines to paint many of their traditional designs.

Next it was up to see the art on the way up to the lookout. Joanne stayed at the bottom as she was not up to the climb. Everybody else climbed the rock to look across the floodplain.

The first piece rock art was the Crosshatching Gallery and the Namarrkan Sisters. The paintings depicting the system of punishment dealt out if Aboriginal people did not respect traditional laws. The traditional owners tell the story of a young girl who broke traditional food taboos by eating barramundi at the wrong time of her life. She was punished too severely and a battle between mobs developed with many dead as a result. Young boys are told this story with spears pointed at them.

Superimposed on the art is a painting of the Namarrkan Sisters, a story told to young children to alert them to the dangers of crocodiles. The girls used to play games near the mouth of the East Alligator River and would hide from one and other by turning into crocodiles. They finally decided to both turn into crocodiles as they could then eat whatever they wanted.

Then to the top of the lookout. We were afforded an expansive view across the Nadab floodplains which along with the adjacent river was the major food source for the clans of traditional inhabitants of the area. Hence the variety of rock art animals that we have seen.

Descending the rock mountain back to the pathway below, we were joined again by Jo and headed back out, looking at the last and possibly the most important and sacred exhibits on the way.

Traditionally a women only site, it was visited by Garranga'rreli, the Rainbow Serpent as she crossed the top end during the Dreaming. As she crossed the land she “sang” the plants, rocks, animals and people into existence. Creation ancestors also dwell here as portrayed by the image on the rock as a reminder to the locals of her existence. The songline is still a sacred path for the indigenous people of the area.

With the experience behind us we jumped into the vehicles and headed back to the turnoff to Arnhem Land and Cahill’s Crossing, where Luke declared earlier that we would definitely see crocs. And crocs we did see.

At first Luke drove into the exclusion zone sighting “Authorised Vehicles Only”. We weren’t one of them so we done an about face at the causeway and headed back to the carpark where we should have been in the first place.

A short walk through the bush and we were at Cahill’s Crossing, so named after Paddy Cahill, the operator of a buffalo, cattle and agricultural station located at Oenpelli from the 1890’s until 1922. The crossing has been used by Aborigines for thousands of years as a part of a major trade and communications route and necessary to cross the East Alligator River, the boundary between Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land.

Named by Captain Phillip Parker King in 1818, while exploring the northern shores, he experienced so many ‘supposed’ alligators that he named three rivers after them. The East, West, and South Alligator Rivers.

When we arrived, there were quite a few people at the viewing area to see what was going on, so we joined them. Initially there were a couple of crocs just below us in the water not doing much at all and a larger one, three to four metres, on the other side. Their lethargy didn’t enthuse us too much but it was the first wild crocodiles that we had experienced so there were no complaints.

Their apparent lethargy was short lived however when a fisherman in thongs and shorts, fishing off of the elevated rock wall in front of the platform caught a pretty good sized barramundi. About a couple of foot long. As soon as the hook stuck, he quickly moved across the rocks toward the causeway to get it on shore. The thrashing of the fish started a subdued commotion among the crocs as they waded towards the catch.

As the fisherman was heading towards the causeway with his fish, all crocs were closing in on their prey. The big one on the other side, although seemingly casual, was the quickest, and as the fish was a metre from the shore, a frenzied lunge was all it took to rob the fisherman of his catch. The croc immediately done an about face, threw the barra around to reposition it in his mouth and crushed it. We could hear the fish’s bones break as the croc closed its jaws.

The men then walked down the causeway to where the croc had taken the fish for a closer look. There was still one smaller croc in the water which made us a little nervous as he just missed out on a feed and was hanging around. He was three metres from the shore and we were three metres from the water and looking in his emotionless eyes gave us no confidence about what was going through his head. Not knowing how agile he would be with a three metre runup before hitting land, we backed off and headed back up the ramp. To a safe distance.

As a last hurrah, another croc swam in from downstream on the incoming tide, glided across the causeway and positioned himself facing the tide, waiting for prey to be washed over the causeway and into its trap.

There was probably plenty of more action to come but we needed to move on. It was almost three and we had an hour and a half drive in front of us. After a brief stop at the closed down Bark Hut Caravan Park, where Luke organised to pick up his boat, we made it back to Bayview before five. Shane and Jo unpacked what they could of the Amarok (it was going out again camping next day with someone else) and had a swim while they waited for the others.

The rest of the night was rather mundane, catching up with the washing, order take away pizza for dinner and to top it all off, the Batman Lego movie on DVD. What a way to finish the day. Most ended up in bed early, leaving Luke and Zac to finish the movie and play games until all hours.

Tomorrow we’re homeward bound.
