Our Utsav's (festivals)
I completed my graduation from Hinduja College (Charni Road, Mumbai) with friends who had faith in Lord Ganesha and Maa Durga – during the respective Utsav’s (festivals), it was a common practice for me to hop Ganeshotsav mandals at Khetwadi, Girgaon, Lalbaug and occasionally attend the Garba Raas too! Being a non-dancer, I never enjoyed them, really!
Post passing out from college, I never went back to those mandals, instead, I started visiting friends houses for Ganesh darshan over the last 15+ years – this ritual was broken during the pandemic times.
This year, for some reason, I decided to visit those lanes at Khetwadi and Girgaon again and relive those memories – a friend accompanied me, and we hopped like 15 to 18 mandals over a 4-hour period. Luckily, I got a good parking spot just outside Harkishandas Hospital and we completed this 4-hour trip on the foot. A small break at Nityanand (after ages!) helped us recharge during this trip!
Here’s a look at the beautiful idols (including the one at a friend’s home too):
I had joined this company in 2007 and made some Bengali friends there – every year during Durga Puja, I would hear stories from Kolkata of the Pandals and Pujos and the food; and I was like – once, at least once, I must be in Kolkata for Durga Puja but that hasn’t materialised yet.
However, for the last 2 weeks, I was planning to visit all the Pandals in Mumbai itself and see what happens in there. Tried asking a friend but the friend couldn’t accompany me this time, so I decided to go solo.
Instead of my car, I decided to take this tour on foot, in trains, metro, and rickshaws. I started my day with a visit to the Chembur Durga Puja Association pandal – got to know that today was Maha Shashti (Day 1 of the Durga Puja) and hence the Pandals would open a little later in the day. After Chembur, I returned home and ate some lip-smacking Pav Bhaji, a perfect recipe for an afternoon siesta!
Later in the evening, I re-started my journey and visited the following pandals:
Bandra: Natun Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsab (this one I am told has participation from Sushmita Sen)
Khar: Ramakrishna Math Building
Juhu: North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja Samity (this one I am told has participation from the Mukherjee’s – Rani, Kajol, Ayan) – I actually saw Rani’s father on stage.
Andheri: Lokhandwala Durgotsav (this one I am told has participation from Abhijeet (the singer) Bhattcharya)
Overall, across these 5 pandals, I covered a journey of ~50KMs (end-to-end) over a ~6-hour period. The effort was worthwhile with the festivities, vibes, the people, and the food!
Anyone who is looking to visit these Pandals over the next 3 days, do reach out – happy to help!
Here’s a look at the beautiful idols – pictures certainly cannot capture what the mind saw!

On the occasion of Ganpati, Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn visited the famous Lalbaugcha Raja in Mumbai. His 11-year-old Yug also accompanied him.
