Welcome to the Family!
“Where we goin’ mum?” Gracie questions while they drive down the road together as a family. She is buckled into her pink car seat sitting in the back seat of the Range Rover kicking her legs back and forth, her feet hitting the back of Harry’s seat occasionally.
You are sitting in the passenger seat of the car, Harry reaches over to hold your hand moving his thumb back and forth against your fingers. “It’s a surprise bug! But you’re gonna love it. We are almost there. I know how excited you are.” You turned around in your seat so Grace could see your face.
“O…kay.” She sighs because her mum will not tell her where they are going. She is having a hard time holding still. Surprises are her favorite  and she has a feeling this is going to be good.
“Gracie? Do you want to play I Spy?” Harry thought playing a game may help her contain the excitement that was about to burst of her little body.
“Yes! I go first?” She asks.
“Perfect! Pick something hard bug.” Harry instructs. He smiles at you as you give his hand a light squeeze.
“Something in my little eye, something… red.” Grace looks out the window through her pink sparkly sunnies that she insisted on wearing. It always makes you smile when she says phrases in her own mixed up way.
“A car?” You say.
“No try again please.” Grace replies.
“That sign?” Harry asks.
“Noooo!” Grace giggles.
“Oh! The traffic light?” You ask as you see the traffic light beaming red signaling you to stop.
“Good job mum! You got it!” Grace claps her hands. You and Harry join in  on the mini celebration by clapping your hands and shouting terms of excitement. After the clapping, Harry pulls into a parking lot. Putting the car into park, Harry unbuckles his seat belt and looks back at Grace.
“Are we at my surprise daddy?” Your daughter’s eyes are wide with hope, silently praying she can finally see what she has been waiting for during the 15 minute car ride.
“Yes we are love! Are ya ready?” You ask her with a smile.
“Yessss!” Grace is beyond excited, she unbuckles her seat belt and is ready to get out of the car.
Harry looks over at you. “Ready to expand this family?"
"Mmhmm, Let’s do this!” You lean in and give your husband a kiss, short, sweet and nothing more.
Harry pulls away from your lips  and jumps out of the car. He opens the door for Grace as she hops out and grabs his hand. Meeting up with them in front of the Range Rover, you join in on the hand holding, interlocking  with the tiny fingers that belong to your daughter. Opening the door to the building your family walks inside knowing when you leave, you will be a family of 4.
“Welcome to the Humane Society. How may help you?” A smiley girl from behind the front counter announces.
“We are here to adopt a dog!” Harry smiles at the girl, then looks down at Grace whose eyes begin growing to the size of golf balls.
“A puppy?” Grace starts jumping up down and enthusiastically moves her hips side to side doing her little happy dance.
“Is that okay?” You ask Grace.
“Yesssss!” The smile on her face is causing her dimple to dig deep into her cheek. You are positive your finger will get lost if you stuck it into the hole. You and Harry had the conversation last night. Grace has been begging for a pet for weeks. First it was a fluffy bunny, then she wanted a pink elephant, two days ago she asked for a ‘cute baby lion’, but a dog just felt more appropriate. Harry didn’t need convincing though, he loves dogs almost as much as babies. So when you brought it up, he was on board. Harry was adamant that the family went to the Humane Society to adopt a dog.  So that’s what you were doing.   “We have lots of dogs that are available for adoption! I can take you back to look at them!” The girl stands up and motions for the family to come with her through the back door. Gracie runs ahead first with Harry hot on her heels. (He is just as, if not more, excited for a dog to come join your little family .)
“All the dogs down this aisle are available for adoption. Just let me know when you find one you like and we will get all the paper work filled out!” The girl says as she points down a long aisle filled with barking dogs excited for attention. “Thank you!” Harry says with a nod towards the employee. “Should we have a look Gracie?"
"Mmhmm.” Gracie nods as she grabs Harry’s hand. They look into each kennel, looking at the different dogs. The Humane Society has a wide array of dogs to choose from. They have puppies or elderly dogs, spotted or solid, Grace has lots of choices to choose from and she is determined to make the best choice. “What about this one?” You ask pointing to a kennel with a brown lab. He is sitting and eager to sniff your hand when you put it against the kennel. “He seems sweet."
Gracie walks over to the kennel and puts her face against the door to get up close and personal. The lab sniffs Grace and then lays down on the floor. He is a very mellow dog who seems very uninterested in what is going on. "Nah, he doesn’t give kisses!” She pulls her face away from the kennel and looks up at her daddy.
“Alright, let’s keep looking.” Harry reaches for her hand. Just as Harry gets a good grasp, she breaks free and runs towards a kennel. Her face is pressed towards the door of the kennel and she is giggling as her face is being attacked with puppy kisses.

“This one! I want this one!” She says through her giggling fit. “It’s cute! And gives lots of kisses! Please?"
Harry puts his arm around your waist as you approach the kennel. The puppy Grace has fallen in love with is a fluffy, black and white Sheepadoodle, and boy is she cute.  She is still small due to her only being 2 months old, but you and Harry are sold. By the look on Grace’s face, it was love at first sight. Your daughter just found her new best friend.
"If that’s the one you want Grace, we can get her. I’ll go let the nice lady up front we found ourselves a new family member.” You say, kissing Harry and walking to the front of the building.
“I’m so excited!” Grace says with a squeal at the end. This made Harry smile as big as the ocean.
“Me too bug!” Harry puts his hand against the kennel to say hello to their newest member of the family.
“Daddy, she wants to give you kisses!"
Harry leans his head towards the door where he is immediately attacked with puppy kisses from the fluffy ball of fur. "She gives pretty good kisses. Almost as good as yours!” He pulls his face away and puckers his lips.
Grace gives Harry a sloppy kiss. “I love you daddy!” She says as she hugs him tight.
“Love ya too Gracie girl."
The Humane society employee helped you fill out the paperwork letting you know the puppy is up to date on all her shots. You paid the adoption fee and signed the papers. Soon you are on your way with the new puppy sitting in your lap as your drive to the pet store. The puppy cuddles in your lap and gives little kisses to your hand.
"Her name is Poppy!” Grace states.
“Oh I like that name! Why Poppy? Where did you get that name?” You say curious as to why she has come up with such a random name.
“I have a friend at the park. Her name is Poppy. She is nice. So is the puppy!” Grace tells her parents.
“Sounds like a nice person to name her after bug. I think Poppy is going to be a lot of fun!” Harry says with a smile.
“I love her!” Grace says as she looks out the window. Both parents hum in agreement with their daughter, knowing Poppy is going to be very loved.   Harry pulls up to Mungo and Maud Dog and Cat Outfitters. You stayed in the car with Poppy, while Grace and Harry went to get some essentials for the new family member.  The high end pet store had a wide selection of dog collars to pick from. Harry and Grace decided on a tan and blush pink collar with its matching lead for Poppy.
Next they are on the hunt for a dog bed. They find a blush pink, fluffy bed fit for a queen. Grace insisted on the blush pink bowls because “It’s pink daddy!”
Harry takes Grace over to the dog toys so Poppy has something to play with. Grace instantly goes towards a sheep, he is round, grey, and he squeaks.
“Poppy needs a sheep like me. I have Bob! Poppy needs Bob too!” Harry agrees and he puts the sheep into the basket. Working together they pick an array of toys for Poppy.

After picking out food and treats Harry decides it is important to make Poppy a dog tag. They pick a simple round design in silver and the store employee engraved Poppy’s name, and the family phone number. They now have all the supplies to make Poppy feel welcome and at home.
Pulling into the driveway they are now home. Harry helps Grace bring in the new pet supplies while you bring in the sleepy puppy.
Grace taps your leg when you walk into the kitchen. “Can I tell Poppy something?” She asks.
You bend down to her level. “Go ahead."
Kissing the puppy’s head and running her hand down Poppy’s back, Grace leans in close and whispers "Welcome to the family Poppy. We love you!"
