Fees hike, education & engagement week and marching against racism!!
Barbara Ntumy
Officer for School of Social Science and School of Social Professions.
Black Students’ Campaign’s second place National Executive Councillor.
This report will cover my activities from 18 January 2017.
Tumblr media
Fees Hike Campaign
London Metropolitan University prides itself on offering education to those from low income backgrounds. Our London Met student body is incredibly diverse with majority women students and a majority of students being of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean decent. But our proud tradition here at London Met is under threat, as rising fees are increasingly pricing the poorest and less privileged out of education.
Students are already graduating with tens of thousands of pounds’ worth of debt - a further increase in tuition fees will simply put us in even more debt.
We will be launching our campaign during Education and Engagement Week to defend education at London Met against the increase in tuition fees across all courses and all levels.
Tumblr media
 Education and Engagement Week (20 – 24 February 2017)
Education and Engagement Week is an opportunity for all students to participate in discussion about education beyond the classroom and engage with Students' Union clubs and societies. We will be running Students' Union stalls across campuses during the week, where we will have information on sports clubs and societies.
MONDAY 20 February
Students' Union Stall  Venue: The Junction at Holloway Campus   Time: 11am – 2pm
TUESDAY 21 February

WEDNESDAY 22 February
Students' Union Stall  Venue: The Junction at Holloway Campus  Time 11am – 1pm
Students and education; talk  and interactive discussion. Beyond the current curriculum - free  education, access, equality and diversity.
Venue: GCG-08 Holloway, Graduate Centre
Time: 1– 1:45pm
Speakers
Selina Anderson
Kai Lutterodt
Students and society; talk  and interactive discussion. Education for a better world - students in the  fight against racism, climate change and war!   Venue: GCG-08 Holloway, Graduate Centre  Time: 2 – 2:45pm
Speakers
Kate Hudson - CND General secretary
Lindsey German - convenor of Stop the War
Aaron Kiely - Friends of the Earth and London Met  Alumni
THURSDAY 23 February
Students Union Stall  Venue: Moorgate Hub  Time: 11am – 2pm
 FRIDAY 24 February

Against racism, for freedom of movement after Brexit
London Met UCU and Unison have reached out to the Students’ Union in regards to organizing and holding a joint meeting on the impact of the vote to leave the European Union will, have on EU students and staff. The meeting will also be discussing the rise is racism and xenophobia since the vote and what we can do to fight back.
Tumblr media
 UN Anti-Racism Day
UN Anti-Racism Day is a global day of action against racism in all its forms. There has never been a more important time in recent history to stand up to racism. There has been a rise in racist attacks and hate crimes following the election of Donald Trump in the US and the Brexit vote in the EU referendum in Britain. Now more than ever - we must stand up to and unite against this growing racist threat.
London Met Students’ Union has supported this initiative over the past few and we will be mobilizing students to attend this year’s demonstration on Saturday 18 March 2017.
If you are interested in attending, please get in-touch.
Reporting sexual, racist and other forms of harassment
The university doesn’t have a clear pathway for students to report different forms of harassment against staff and or students. I’m working on getting the university to produce a clear pathway, training for proctors who deal with complaints and look to promote this to students.
Tumblr media
NUS Black Students Campaign Winter Conference
The winter conference saw the gathering of over 100 students of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean descent. It was empowering to discuss how students of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean descent should unite together to fight back against the rising tide of racism. Whether it’s challenging the Islamaphobic Prevent agenda or taking on racist stop and search and the attainment gap in education. We also discussed increasing all our representation, challenging the victimization of international students, supporting immigrants in attaining access to student finance as well as fighting for free education. We discussed international peace and justice – from how we should mark the ‘UN International Decade of People of African Descent’ which started in 2014 to supporting freedom for Palestine.

Just in – I’m repin’ UALACS!
my excited face…
There are few things that excite me these days – seriously. You’d have to either be Idris Elba replying to my tweets, or Joe Thomas singing “hello, welcome to the show…” (I’m showing my age now).
However morning when a package came through the post, I couldn’t contain my excitement (unfortunately didn’t involve either Elba or Joe), when I realised what the package was… Our “I rep…

Let's do Lunch | 3 PR Agency Directors share a memorable Lunch Date and the impact it created
Seven years ago I set up Let’s Do Lunch Network, a networking platform with the aim of creating meaningful connections through the sharing of food. It’s finally having a revival (check out our Christmas Lunch Network event at Gunpowder), so I’ve asked three PR executives I admire to share a memorable ‘let’s do lunch’ moment, and its impact… Continue reading Untitled

Let's do Lunch Network | Christmas Menu at Gunpowder Soho with My Soho Times
Let's do Lunch Network influencers' table at Gunpowder Soho...
Food has a wonderful way of connecting us, regardless of our background. I knew I was onto something special when I set up Let’s Do Lunch Network seven years ago whilst studying journalism at UAL (University of the Arts London). Even then, at the early stage of my career, it was apparent my superpower as a creative would be to establish meaningful IRL (in real life) connections beyond the…

Everything on the menu sounded inviting as we stood outside Lima, mentally debating which of the many good restaurants on Charlotte Street was worthy of our custom for the much awaited catch up between me and my good friend and mentor, Gerry Haag.
However just to be sure we weren’t missing out on something else new in and as intriguing in Fitzrovia or as it’s sometimes called Noho (no no – a failed attempt to rebrand the area north of Soho), we strolled further down the street. Charlotte Street has been one of my favourite off-the-beaten tracks of Oxford Street since I’ve lived in Central London for over 10 years. Located just a stone-throws away from Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street Station, it is a cleaner slate north of its iconic counterpart Soho.
Within 5 minutes we were back outside Lima, confirming from the menu and the ambiance visible from its glass façade that this was were we could sit and catch up with good food to fuel us.
Lima has received 4 accolades which include 1 Michelin Star and Best new Restaurant. I was unaware of the high status of this restaurant until I looked it up this morning. And that speaks volumes – the food (and drink; those Pisco Cocktails took me right back to Chile), spoke for itself. Beautifully presented contemporary Peruvian cuisine without losing the essence of flavour.
I’ll admit, this restaurant isn’t in the average price budget – it’s £££. But for good quality food and a taste of South America without the airfare price tag,  it was worth the compromise to perhaps miss out on eating out this week, just to savour good quality Michelin Star food!
A taste of Lima from Charlotte Street, W1…
Hake “plancha”
Salmon “hot ceviche”
Sea Bream Ceviche
Scallop Tiradito
Fruity cocktails: pisco sours
Great food & drink with great company and pleasant staff… You might want to pop over for a stroll on Charlotte street to visit Lima.

Let’s do Lunch | Beast from the East: The Snow Storm causing Disruption in the UK and Concern for those Sleeping Rough

Capturing the moment: Regents Street, photo credit: Kai Lutterodt
I arrived back from a mini break in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic to be met by a snow storm as I arrived into London. The Serbian weather I’d been expecting in the -11 temperatures of my city break, took me face-on on Tuesday afternoon – nothing short of a ‘welcome back to London’ surprise. I marvelled at the sight of lashings of…
