Almost five years ago, I started working on a video about this particular topic. Five years, 41 pages, and almost 23,000 words later it became my biggest video ever -- and I'm very proud with how it turned out!

Sherlock Holmes is quite possibly the most famous fictional detective of all time. As a result, he's been the subject of many, many adaptations over the years. And anime is no exception! This is the video hbomberguy didn't want to make, so I guess I'll make it instead! Strap in folks, this is going to be a lengthy investigation!

Since Conan Doyle first published The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton on March 26th (in 1904) which is my favourite Holmes story ever since childhood, I thought of doing a not Moriarty the Patriot specific post as well today, regarding all the adaptations of the Milverton case I saw. (Granada, Soviet Holmes, the Douglas Wilmer series, the 1989 BBC radio play, Elementary, BBC Sherlock, Kabukichou Sherlock and the Moriarty the Patriot manga/anime/musical)

I recently rewatched them and I thought first that I should make a list in terms of how much I liked them with the canon story in mind. However, I need to admit that I am not fully satisfied with either of them and it would also be unfair to compare the adaptations what intended to be faithful to the canon and those what wanted to tell the story differently. But there is one element in the canon story what is a crucial part for me in how much I enjoy an adaptation - Sherlock Holmes and Milverton's negotiation at the Baker Street. This is where it shows how evil and despicable Milverton actually, his discussion with Holmes is one of the main reasons why this is my favourite SH story and why I love Milverton so much as a villain. So I decided to not exactly rank, but compare each adaptations' negotiation scene to the original and how well it works for me. It is a subjective analysis, of course.

But first, why I enjoy the negotiation scene in the canon so much. Sherlock Holmes' speech what is full of repulsion and hatred towards Milverton for how evil, cruel and despicable he is is really fun to read. He never loathed anyone in the canon as much as he loathed Milverton, at the same time, he didn't deny that Milverton is genius in his own game, he is the one who calls him as the King of Blackmail, not Milverton himself. His extreme repulsion is presented in that he doesn't even shake hands with him when Milverton enters the room. And Milverton just smiles on this, he really enjoys the hatred what is directed towards him and the whole negotiation - that's why he actually came, to get amused by how desperate Holmes can get, because he does not want to lower his terms for the money he asked from the blackmailed Lady Eva, not even the slightest. He came to the Baker Street to show off his power as a blackmailer to Holmes - that's he talks about his other cases to him - and because he really just enjoys to see people beg to him and making them getting ridiculed. Like making Holmes giving up on fair play and attack him straight away (Watson even raises a chair) just to pull his pistol out and show that this was all for nothing, talking down on Holmes with "I have been expecting you to do something original... your supposition that I would bring the letters here in a notebook is entirely mistaken. I would do nothing so foolish." suggesting that on the other hand, Holmes is foolish for thinking otherwise. And he does all of this with a wide smile on his face, laughing into Holmes' face with an insufferable fake pity that how painful for him to expose Lady Eva when in fact, he sadistically enjoys it. During the negotiation, it's Milverton who controls the situation, Holmes can only react to what he does. This scene shows well that Milverton will be a hard-to-defeat foe with the most hideous personality in the Sherlock Holmes canon - and that's what made him such a great villain.

This story was adapted by mainly the Granada series, the Soviet Holmes, the BBC series with Douglas Wilmer, the BBC radio play, BBC Sherlock, Kabukichou Sherlock, Moriarty the Patriot manga/anime/musical and Elementary. However, I will not count the Elementary adaptation in because there is no negotiation scene there at all, Milverton doesn't even have presence, not even talks or do anything, he is just a regular blackmailer - he does not seem to be the King of Blackmail at all. (I love Elementary but I refuse to accept this episode as a CAM adaptation. So it's off the table.) But I will analyse the rest of the adaptations.

Let's start with those what remained faithful to the canon.

GRANADA

In Granada, Milverton is very much like in the canon, he plays with Holmes during the scene with an insufferable smile, laughs into Holmes' face before leaving, his tone is full of fake "what a pity, how unfortunate." It's really enjoyable to watch him - but I find it a bit disappointing that Holmes on the other hand, barely has screentime at all, the whole negotiation is done by Watson, Holmes remains in the background. It should have been Milverton and Holmes' "face-off". Holmes gives a speech before the negotiation about how despicable Milverton is and shows how much he hates him, but aside from attacking Milverton like in the canon, he is very passive during the negotiation itself. So as much I loved how Milverton comes off, I still feel that something was missing - namely Holmes.

SOVIET HOLMES

I am a bit sad that Holmes' speech on Milverton was missing - in this adaptation, Mycroft hires him to take up Lady Eva's case - otherwise, the negotiation was faithful to the canon. Milverton is good, but I feel like maybe he is a bit less of a smooth-talker and his "fake pitying" is missing too, but the way he laughed off Holmes and just left in the end was perfect. He was enjoyable to watch even if I liked Granada Milverton better. But at least, Holmes' part in the negotiation was done well.

THE BBC SERIES (WITH DOUGLAS WILMER)

I enjoyed this Milverton so much, as much as in Granada! I think he did the fake pitying over his victim the best, the "oh how sorry I am" was always in his tone while it was also very clear that he feels the exact opposite. In this adaptation, we see two visits - first, Holmes visits him in his own home then Milverton visits him at Baker Street, so the negotiation scene was split up. But between the two, we see a tragedy happening thanks to Milverton's blackmail what makes him come off much more evil during the second visit. The second time, under the facade of the "what a pity that suicide was", Milverton just shows off his power which is more frightening, as Holmes needed to witness Milverton's victory in the news. And his speech where he talks about how evil is Milverton and how much he hates him hits more due to this intermission, too. Also - Milverton here looks exactly like on the Sidney Paget illustrations.

THE 1989 SHERLOCK HOLMES BBC RADIO PLAY

It's "just" a radio play but it's very well-played, you can actually imagine the negotiation through the voice actors. Holmes' speech on Milverton's evil hits here the best at the start of the episode and Milverton is very much like in the canon. The chair scene made me laugh here the most.

These were the adaptations what tried to remain faithful to the canon. If I need to choose one, I would maybe say the Douglas Wilmer one with the Radio Play as the close second. (And I'm still sad for Granada because as much as it had the perfect Milverton, something was missing with Holmes being so passive.)

Now onto the adaptations what went for new takes regarding the Milverton case - Kabukichou Sherlock, BBC Sherlock and Moriarty the Patriot. Neither of the adaptations has Lady Eva Brackwell as the victim and all three adds another layer of sadism and cruelty to Milverton's personality. When it comes to BBC Sherlock and Moriarty the Patriot - which is highly inspired by BBC Sherlock - Milverton is not just a blackmailer there, but a media mogul with an even bigger power hunger than canon Milverton was. In both adaptations, Milverton blackmails for the sake of power which causes the negotiation going down a bit differently. I won't view this as a mistake, because these scenes where not intended to faithfully adapt the original - what matters is how well the negotiation works as a scene and how it presents Milverton as a villain.

KABUKICHOU SHERLOCK

I honestly admit that I was never fond of this series at all, but congratulations on it for creating a Milverton that makes even me vomit. He is there a former journalists who blackmails celebrities - not just for money but for sexual services - with their secrets and also owns sex bars with high school girl workers. He is the one who walks into Sherlock's office and tells that they can't do anything against him because he has dirty secrets on the police high-ups as well - which is a smart technique, I'll give him to that. But other than this, he doesn't really have any style, he comes across very harsh and he is insufferable but not in a fun way. His negotiation with Sherlock is not an intellectual match at all and the Sherlock hating Milverton speech is completely missing. Still better than Elementary, tho.

BBC SHERLOCK

Sherlock also gives a "how much I loath Milverton/Magnussen" speech but this has no power here at all because John keeps cutting into it with his "so Sherlock, are you truly dating someone" questions. And this is really distracting and off-putting for me. Even Sherlock points out that "I just told you about how evil and powerhungry Milverton/Magnussen is and you keep asking me about dinner dates?" and I felt the same. Like the series made the whole thing to be a joke. For me, it was not funny. Milverton demanding security protocoll first and sending in his bodyguards to search through Sherlock and John is logical, really - but I need to admit I prefer the Milverton who marches into Sherlock's office confidently. Milverton here truly humiliate Sherlock more than in the original but in less subtle ways - cutting into his speech, pissing in his fireplace - and it's connected to his power hunger, to show that he can do it because Sherlock is applying to him for a favour and cannot fight back. I wouldn't mind this as much - if there won't be the bodyguards which makes Milverton to have power over Sherlock physically, not psychologically. (But giving a hint at Sherlock's weak point to show the psychological power too was nice at least.) Milverton is truly insufferable here, but not as fun as he should be. (It's not the actor's fault, tho, he plays well, it's more of the writing. They wanted Milverton to come off more as a serious evil businessman archetype instead of faking pity for his victims with a wide smile on his face.) Milverton should be a sadist with a smooth voice who pretends to be sorry for the ruin he is about to cause while his smile keeps widening.

MORIARTY THE PATRIOT

Moriarty the Patriot actually has three versions on the negotiation, because the manga was adapted into anime and musical - and all these three differs somewhat. So I decided to view them as three almost similar, but in terms of what is important to me, slightly different adaptations what I will analyse separately. (And well, this is still a Moriarty the Patriot Milverton focused blog, so no surprise that this ended up to be the most detailed.)

Manga:

Really, this Sherlock hates Milverton with the biggest passion of all and it comes off really well during his speech - which is different from the original since Milverton (in Sherlock's opinion) does his blackmails purely for sadism and not for financial gain. Sherlock also admits that Milverton defeated him for more than once in the past and this made him hate even more. Anyway, his speech is a really good foreplay for Milverton's visit. Moriarty the Patriot got lot of inspiration from BBC Sherlock when it comes to the negotiation scene - we get Milverton showing off his power with acting rude (offering tea he put his tobacco into to John, stepping onto food) and there is piss too - but what is different and what Moriarty the Patriot does better, much much better is Milverton himself. Unlike the BBC Sherlock's Milverton, Milverton doesn't act rude because he has physical power over Sherlock - he has a secretary (not bodyguard) with him, but Sherlock and John could have easily overpowered Milverton if they wanted to. So the reason for not attacking him is truly the psychological power as a blackmailer Milverton has over the situation. And Milverton here is a smooth-talker who makes the usual fake pitiness remarks and overall, when he is talking, he maintains a politely descending attitude. Sherlock's way of fighting back to Milverton is letting Milverton humiliate him with an unbothered face like "eh, I don't give a damn about the mess you are making" but Milverton could still humiliate him through mentioning how he defeated Sherlock before and hurt his pride. Milverton also gives a speech on his power, talking about deduction being worthless compared to the power of information he has and Sherlock reacts to it with pointing out that no use came of that big power since Milverton is an asshole. Milverton just laughs on this, tells that he will not change his terms and leaves with being heavily amused.

Of all adaptations, here is the most clear that Milverton just came to have some sadistic fun and to show off and had no intention to change his terms. Milverton was insufferable in a very entertaining way, very much enjoying his evil and everyone's hatred towards himself. First, I was ambivalent on this negotiation scene because I kept comparing to the canon one, but actually, this scene fits to a more powerhungry version of Milverton and it showed well his despicableness and psychological power, while he had the smiles, the laughs and the entertainment. I still wish if there was more focus on him being a blackmailer in his power speech and if there was less piss.

Anime:

My main problem with it was being short. Sherlock's hatred speech looked cool animated, but it was short, Milverton's VA has an especially smooth voice which was great, but the negotiation barely lasted for two minutes. The scene didn't include Milverton's rude acts, neither the piss, they just talked which was fine, because this Milverton was still fun, even if less fun than the manga one - but again, that was because the scene was too short. Milverton is able to overpower Sherlock before he leaves. A unique thing that the blackmail victim Mary Morstan whose case Sherlock took up was present in the negotiation, making Milverton an even bigger sadist with laughing on Mary's mental breakdown. Again, I would have enjoyed watching the scene longer (but the anime was rushing like hell, I am not surprised this is all we got.)

Musical:

It adapted the manga scene overally well, with Ray Fujita being very fun as Milverton and the talk between him and Sherlock gets very intense and epic. I really enjoy watching it - but I can't forget that the reason Milverton comes off so powerful was the good acting. Sherlock's hating Milverton speech feels too short, even if played well and Milverton's rude behaviour gets bigger focus than his psychological threat. He doesn't stab into Sherlock's pride with bringing up how many times he defeated him before and he comes off less smooth. However, the negotiation is still very fun and Milverton is insufferable in the right way, what the script misses, the acting adds it so in the end, the scene works well.

From the retellings, the Moriarty the Patriot manga version was my favourite. And this watchalong made me realize that while I am generally not satisfied with the adaptations as a whole, most of them had an entertaining negotiation scene.

Kabukichou Sherlock aka Case File nº221: Kabukicho (2019 - 2020)

Просмотр этого аниме было тем еще испытанием для меня. Получилось просто плохо - какая-то смесь детектива, недо-триллера и разнузданной тупой комедии. Да еще и по мотивам "Шерлока Холмса". Хотя, как по мне, если авторы чем и вдохновлялись, так это "Шерлоком" Бибиси. Действие здесь происходит в современном Токио, причем в довольно-таки сомнительном его райончике. Там Уотсон и знакомится со странным детективом Шерлоком Холмсом, у которого от Холмса разве что имя, профессия и общее странное поведение. У него то ли серые, то ли седые волосы, он ��осит самую нелепую шапочку, которую я только видел, а еще свою дедукцию он разъясняет в формате "ракуго" (японская форма театрального рассказа). Здесь Холмс не одиночка, а часть детективного агентства, размещенного в сомнительном клубе/баре (так что тут довольно людно). Помимо Холмса и Уотсона, есть и другие знакомые имена - например, чудовищная миссис Хадсон, которую я даже здесь запостить не смогу, потому что это нарушает российское законодательство (и мое чувство прекрасного). Также здесь есть бойкая рыжеволосая детективша Мэри Морстен, у которой с Уотсоном недо-чувства, собранный и стройный Майкрофт, больше всего похожий характером на версию Гэтисса, Милвертон на одну серию, девчушки и мальчишки из нерегулярных частей Кабуки-тё. Не обошлось Джека Мориарт��, который тут миловидный паренек, поначалу выступающий на стороне Холмса и компании, но у которого есть свои темные секреты. Ирэн Адлер тоже стала со временем одним из основных персонажей, и я уже не удивлен, что ее сюжетная линия содержит в себе секретную информацию на флэшке и мнимую гибель. На первый взгляд все это звучит терпимо и даже интересно, но насколько же этот аниме-сериал ПЛОХ! Здесь полным-полно взрослого юмора и сомнительных шуточек, Холмс периодически щеголяет нагишом, а давайте забацаем Уотсону в лицо обезьяньим дерьмом... Но при этом тут параллельно всему этому несмешному балагану идут расследования кровавых жестоких убийств, и попытки в триллер а ля последний сезон "Шерлока". Связи с шерлокианой, кроме имен, практически никакой, но вот фанатам "Шерлока" это дерьмо это аниме должно как раз зайти. Если что, мои скриншоты даже в половину не передают всю ту муть, что там творилась...
