𝐀𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐓𝐚𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐦
𝐈𝐍 𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐂𝐇; when two star crossed lovers are reborn to unite, whole universe comes to bring them together.
𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐑𝐁: Rudra's viewpoint |
𝐀𝐌𝐁𝐈𝐊𝐀 𝐔𝐏𝐀𝐃𝐇𝐘𝐀𝐘; “I'm not doing this to claim him. I'm doing this because I'm his.”
𝐑𝐔𝐃𝐑𝐀 𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐊𝐀𝐑 𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐈; “Love isn't claiming your ownership on someone, it's surrendering oneself to that person and is a promise to love, cherish, respect and be with that person on every step of life.”
He felt restless.
He didn't knew why.
His heart was somewhere else.
But he didn't knew why.
His feet carried away on it's own, his hazel eyes unfocused, hands deep into his jeans' pocket. His mind jumbled up with the loud thoughts of why is it happening?
Suddenly, his feet halted at the beautiful melody which invaded his ears. Whipping his head around, he realized that he was at the banks of Ganga, and the water with the melody immediately calmed his mind but piqued an interest. Who was this?
Following the sound of the tune, his feet carried him to a wall, where on the top podium a Girl was dancing. Dressed in a pain white chikankari Kurta and leggings, her feet were wrapped up by the Ghunghroos of a Dancer, and the chiming of Bells was rhyming with the song coming out of her phone.
Unaware of the listener, the girl kept dancing and her thick wavy hairs flew with wind, and as if the wind changed it's tide according to the melody, it started blowing a little harshly as she hit the high note, removing all the hairs of her face, and he was starstruck by the women sat there.
The small red dot on her forehead looked more brightened over her fair face, and those kohl coloured eyes? They were definitely like that of a doe. So beautiful, yet so dangerous.
Ambika couldn't blink.
It was as if she couldn't hear the bells, the sound of drums and conches, the chant in the name of holy river Ganga, or the very thundering claps of the devotees. She forgot how to breath.
She forgot everything, the moment her eyes clashed with his.
Illuminated by the pious fire of camphor, holding the aarti in his hands, wearing off yellow Dhoti with golden work at the border, and his broad forehead painted with three white lines and a small vermilion circle in between, his eyes glimmered with complete devotion as he sang the hymn and rotated the holy fire.
Ambika couldn't believe what she was seeing, the distant sound of the Shankhanaad making her chest rising up and down rapidly as tears blurred her eyes. Her senses were overwhelmed as she suddenly turned and pushed Maatangi, Debadrita and Ruchika away, and ran away as she ignored their calls, her blurry eyes somehow seeing the busy path as she tried to block the loud sound and flashes in her mind away.

tongue not in cheek .. out of it .. awkward wonky step .. but the music was such .. so the crossed footsteps ..
getting the lines right .. an embarrassment when they go wrong .. so GET IT RIGHT CRITTER .. !!
in contemplation again and again and again ..
off to work for the day .. ad., shoot .. and six yes 6 films done within the course of the day .. work liberates .. were such words written on the gates of some of the most horrific incidents of the World .. I visited one such .. and still dream of its horror ..
but the most rewarding for the day was the visit to the temple for the Ashadi Ekadashi aarti at my friend’s temple in town .. there is liberation here .. in each breath in each movement .. if I write at 3:30 am now on the 30th of the June , it is because the religiosity of the moment prevails long after it is over ..

Usha Lakshmi Gargi Ratri
Saraswati
I wonder why don't I ever concentrate on the pooja whenever I am in a group. I love to sit in front of my deities alone in a room in dark and let my thoughts and words wander. I know they they hear my inner thoughts as well as the words that project out of my mouth. It feels as if I am home with them only when I am the only one in a room.
It's the same even today. Today it is Basant Panchami. Dadi, my brother and I are doing pooja day. Dad is in another city and mummy has periods so she did not join for the aarti today. She had specifically asked me to keep a few pens and my RD Sharma Maths book near Saraswati maa's moorti.
Funny, how I call Devi Lakshmi as my sakhi and Devi Saraswati as Maa. As a child of five years, I used to watch this animated movie called Omkara on TV. Shivji and Parvati Devi had taken abode in the holy city of Kashi with Ganesha, Karthikeya, Lakshmi and Saraswati as their children. My mother would always tell me to be like Saraswati -- affectionate, kind, wise and simple.
Years flew by, and for a while, my connection with the deities dwindled even with my dearest god, Krishna. But, don't they say that the goddess of Knowledge sits on Vishnu's tongue. Won't the same goddess guide the one who has strayed away from its path?
I stare at the small moorti of the goddess. It took me back to my examination days. I always carried an examination board that had a photo of Devi Saraswati. She always looked so elegant and benevolent. I usually performed well in subjects like English, Hindi, Social Studies and Biology with her photo on my exam board, so I considered her as my lucky charm during exam days.
The Saraswati moorti looks beautiful. I stare at the veena in her hands and the large pink lotus on which she sits. For the first time, I get a tingly feeling running down on my spine -- the feeling that arises each time I am about to meet a goddess in person. Dadi is probably chanting Saraswati chalisa and my brother as usual is randomly mouthing the words and staring at the sweets.
Warmth engulfs my body, and I hear rain fall outside the balcony. My eyes close on their own accord, and for the first time I am given a divine vision.
The goddess is seated near a river bed that is brimming with fresh brightly coloured green grasses, and a few wild flowers. The river looks clean, completely transparent. It sparkles a little under the sun. Her fingers skillfully run on the strings of the Veena, producing the most beautiful tune I have ever heard in my life. Her eyes are closed, but I know she sees me. She knows that I am watching her.
After what feels like an eternity, she stops playing her instrument and opens her eyes. She smiles and gently calls her swan from the river. I turn back and see a large but majestic swan emerge from the crystal clear river with a string of pearls on its beak. The swan turns its head at me and nods. I gawk at the beautiful bird which causes the goddess to giggle. She composes herself and pats the swan's head. "It's a beautiful bird, isn't it?"
"The most exquisite looking swan, devi," I say as the swan gently lands the pearls near my feet. Frowning in confusing, I look at the goddess and ask, "Why did it give the pearls to me? They are yours."
"What do the pearls signify, my child?"
"Wisdom, purity, innocence, serenity and protecting, Maa."
Devi smiles. I see her face shine like the full moon. "Very good. That's true. Now let me tell you something." Her lovely fingers pick a delicate pearl. "Pearls are very difficult to find. They lie deeper and hidden in dark waters. Only the ones brave into the embrace the darkness of the ocean. You have to delve deep and have patience to look for them. There will be many obstacles on your way. You might feel tiredness seep into your bones. Sometimes you will see your companions getting these shiny pearls quickly while you barely find a shell on the water bed. You must remember that to get the best, sometimes you have to wait for long and keep persevering. One day, your hard work will pay off, and these pearls will be yours. Now, pearls also represent wisdom, don't they?"
I nod my head eagerly. She continues, "The quest for diamonds teaches you lessons of immense hard work and the sight to never consider any piece of coal or a stone to be ordinary. The journey to seek pearls gives you lessons of patience and the strength to take bold decisions to get the best of your life with grace, kindness and knowledge."
Her swan nuzzles on my thigh and I feel my legs stiffen which causes the goddess to chuckle. "Don't worry, my swan won't bite you. The worse it can do is drench you in river water to indulge in some mischief."
I nervously laugh and touch the swan's head with my index finger. My eyes then travel upwards to gaze at Maa's face. Her face softens with a knowing look. "You have a question, don't you?"
"There are nights, I hear a song far away from my house. It makes me wonder who I am. There's a lake near my house. Each time I peer at my reflection, I see a woman decked in red and dazzling jewels. For a man, she would be sensuality personified, but to me she appears divine. She has a sharp gaze that would make tongues stutter to make any remark at her. Then, the red clothes and gold jewels disappear. She then appears dressed in white with pearls and flowers around her wrists and legs. She looks lovely but in a different way. She radiates pure love. She looks at everyone with the eyes of a charmed lover, speaks words that would boggle the mind and make you question everything you have ever known. Later, she smiles knowing only a choice few would understand her language and her words. After a while, their faces morph into my reflection and I have never found myself look that divinely charming even in the mirror. Should I know who these women are? Are they me or will I grow up to be them?"
The goddess closes her eyes once again. Her form starts expanding to the skies. Golden efflugence effuses from her being while her fingers start to play the veena once again. She answers.
"You are them, yes, my child. You will grow up to be them. But remember, don't consider them to be separate from each other or from you. Red is for passion, energy and love. Men in your time will confuse this form as lust. You must build yourself in such a way that no man with a narrowed vision can hurl abuse your divinely form. Many are going to speak against you, even for the way you carry yourself and move. You, my child, are going to rise than them. I shall not speak much about your appearance in red. You will have another goddess tell you more, a goddess who often is misinterpreted and shunned today. Let me tell you about the woman in white."
Maa plays a beautiful set of chords that make me feel as if I am floating in air amongst twinkling stars. It feels blissful. Is this how sat-chit-ananda feels like?
A melodious laughter from Maa fills my ears. "Now, that's something for you to find out. I will not reveal everything to you. But for now, let me tell you about the second woman."
"She has the gaze and a hear of a lover. She will fall in love with everything life will give her, be it thorns or roses. Books are her companions. She is going to be a wonderful being of light, love, kindness and wisdom. She wears white to represent the holy and divine knowledge she has learnt in her life and other lifetimes to come. The pearls on her body stand for the important lessons on patience, beauty, virtue and serenity. She is a very mysterious woman. Some say she has the most complex thoughts about life, while a rare minds get through her way of flowery words and poetry to understand one simple Truth -- this Truth is again your quest to realize and understand. You cannot tie her to relationships and desires in the mortal sense. She will love you dearly, do everything that is best for you, but do not expect her to write ballads and love songs for you. Her love songs and poems speak about a different Lover. Who is that Lover is another question whose answer you must find yourself. She will be your guiding force in life and until you transform into her. As I said, you, we, them are all One."
Tears flow out of my eyes. Perhaps, I did find my answer to my questions. Maybe, I will grow and transform myself in the best way possible and help others in the same. Just like Maa said, we all are One, we all can help, learn and grow together.
"Jhia lo prasad ta ne kana emiti thakurani ku dekhuchu." (Daughter, have the prasad. Why are you staring at the goddess like that?"
****** ***** ******* ******** ******** *********
This is the longest in the series. I am really grateful for your comments and the amount of love you have poured out for this series. A lot of it is personal in these tales that happened to me in dreams and in some of my worst days. Maybe that's why it connects you all too. I promise, once I am done with this series, I will reply to all of your comments and reblogs.
And here you can make a guess about the next goddess as Maa said she will tell you about the woman in red, do you all have any guesses who will she be? This is a very easy answer 👀

Kannalane Chapter 3: The Heart Wants What It Wants
" I am leaving Thanjai for a war, Nandini. I won't return till it is over"
Where has she heard these words before? She couldn't remember. But she wasn't focused on how he was saying this was the first war in which he was participating and how he will finally be able to come one step closer to his dream of being a brave warrior as his namesake. He was leaving. And so soon. It has only been a few days since he jokingly asked her to be his lover and now when she finally gathered the strength to address him on the topic, he was going away and all she can do is wait.
"Nandu, why do you look so gloomy?" She was snapped out of her thoughts by his voice laced with concern. His nicknames for her changed every so often. Sometimes it was Chempaka, sometimes it was Nandini, sometimes Nandu. He even calls her Pazhavur Iliya Rani Nandini sometimes just to get a rise out of her.
"I have been hearing of the war, I didn't realise it would be so soon" she said softly.
"Why? Are you missing me already?" He asked, teasingly
"Adi" she called him, a bit annoyed at how lightly he was taking the situation " Aren't you afraid of dying in the Battlefront?"
A change in his facial expression told her that he didn't like her question "Isn't it every soldier's pledge that he would give his life to the cause of every war he fights and serve the empire till his last breath? I would consider it lucky if I do succumb to death in the battlefield, knowing it was done trying to protect my dynasty. But, you don't have to worry about it Nandini. I have the blessings of the entire Chola Nadu and especially my family's and yours"
Nandini wished to tell him that not only he had her prayers, but also her love and her respect. But the words seem to disappear from the surface of her tongue everytime she tried to utter them.
All the soldiers were given Vijayatilak from their families at the palace gates. Nandini didn't go, she knew her presence there might raise some suspicion and even if that weren't the case, people might get an idea with the way Aditha always seem to look at her. So she resorted to sit by her beloved Banyan tree with a Tilak thali simply looking at the river. She was alerted when she heard the sound of horse hooves.
Aditha climbed down from his horse, looking battle ready in his armour and sword.
" How did you know I was coming?" He asked
"How did you know I would be here?" She retorted
He shrugged, " Maybe we had similar instincts"
She stood up. They moved closer to each other. She rotated the thali in circular motion in front of him, sprinkling some rice over his head and finally putting a Tilak on his forehead, underneath the already present tilak mark, probably put by his mother.
"May Krishna help you in your journey and battle" She said.
He smiled in acknowledgement. At that moment Nandini came to a realisation. Both of them not only shared similar instincts but also similar sentiments. Perhaps they just needed to verbalise it.
"And.." ,he looked at her again, almost expectantly " And I want you to know I'll be waiting for you".His eyes twinkled and for a moment she thought he was going to embrace her but he took a deep breath in order to compose himself and said " I'm glad. And I want you to know that you'll be on my mind all day until I return"
She watched him climb on top of his horse and and gallop away, praying that may his dream of being a fine warrior get fulfilled.
The six months that passed seemed like six years to her. News came to the capital on a regular basis and the public was relieved that the soldiers were gaining victory and that the battle might end soon. And there wasn't a day Nandini didn't worry about Aditha.
She was making garlands for the temple in the morning when she saw some girls run excitedly with aarti thalis to the palace grounds. "What happened?" She asked a girl nearby. "You didn't hear? The soldiers are coming back. We won the war. We are all going to welcome the victors" the girl said.
Nandini was elated. She joined the girls immediately, not even thinking of taking a thali and went to the palace gates, now opened and filled half-way with beautiful maidens, all welcoming the arriving soldiers with flowers. Nandini strained to see his wavy long hair or his armour or even his horse but she couldn't see anything. Fear began to build in her mind.Has something happened to him? Was he severely wounded? Or worse…
Just then someone tapped on her shoulder and she turned around to see Vishaka, seemingly out of breath. "You cheeky girl! You didn't tell me how much your friendship with your admirer has progressed" She said grinning.
"What are you talking about?" Asked a confused Nandini. Vishaka waved an olai in front of her "He asked Suseel who asked me to give you this. Are you two planning on making us your secret messengers?"
Nandini all but snatched the olai from Vishaka's hands and opened it. The content was short and precise.
Tomorrow morning at our usual place. I yearn to see you again my dear Chempaka
Her heart brimmed with happiness and relief. "He is safe" she said to herself, as a way reassuring herself. She embraced Vishaka as shouts of victory and praises for the emperor and empire erupted around them.
"Aditha, I don't know how to ride a horse" Nandini said, puzzled why the first thing Aditha asked after meeting her the next morning was to get on his horse. "You won't be riding alone, silly. I'll be with you" He laughed. He first helped to hoist her onto the saddle of the horse and climbed behind her, taking the reins and effectively caging her in his arms. "I can't believe you thought I'd let you fall, Nandu" he said, "You are my precious passenger after all". Slowly he let the horse walk through the nearby forest. Nandini closed her eyes and leaned back against his chest, feeling the broad expanse of his chest through his vest and the hardened muscles of his forearms as a result of the rigorous training, his breath close to her ears and his chin resting on top of her head now that he has grown a head taller within those six months. This is bliss. Nandini thought. This is what it feels like to be drowning in love. In the days that followed, this became their routine along with occassional walks through the forest path, their hands slowly touching and intertwining. He'd show her his scars littered across his torso with a sense of pride but she felt a tinge of sadness and fear, realising how close he'd come to death. But being near him and listening to his voice was something addicting to her and she continued to be in her lovebliss everyday.
One day, she was seated with Vishaka near the temple pond, narrating her day. By and by she saw a slight change in her friend's facial expression and her biting her lip. "Vishaka, you can tell me whatever you want, don't lie" she said, when Vishaka tried to protest "I can see you biting your lip, you do that whenever you are nervous. I know you from childhood, stop beating around the bush and tell me"
Vishaka took a deep breath and said, " While I am extremely happy for you in your newfound love, I can't help but be afraid for your future Nandini. I am secure in my relationship with Suseel because we are going to get married in two years time but what about you? Do you know how genuine he is towards you? What would your Appa say when he finds out or worse, what about his family? he is the son of the chieftain! Do you think his family would welcome a priest's daughter with open arms when they can even have marriage proposals from royal families?" Vishaka saw Nandini's face become gloom " I didn't say this to sadden you Sakhi but boys from wealthy families have a tendency to dally with young girls from lower influencial families. I just want you to be safe"
Nandini understood that her friend was only looking out for her. And she was sincere in her feelings for Aditha as she believed he is too. But nevertheless Vishaka's words managed to plant seeds of doubts and insecurity in her mind.
When she came home that night she was greeted with Kaveri sitting on the varenda. "Appa took Ananda with him to go and visit a realtive" Kaveri answered when Nandini looked around at the empty house. "Who was that boy with you today Akka"
Nandini stared at Kaveri for a few minutes for her jump onto the topic of Aditha without any preamble. "I went in search of you today morning and came to the riverside as I didn't see you in the temple" Kaveri said quietly "Why was he wearing clothes different in material as opposed to us Akka" she pressed further when Nandini continued to maintain her silence. "Is he someone important?"
"He's my friend" Nandini replied and that brought the conversation to an end although she knew her younger sister was too smart for her age and had already figured out the identity of the person and about their their closeness. But Kaveri also respected her privacy that she didn't bring up the topic again and for that Nandini was grateful as she slowly began to realise something. A reality to which she was blind all this time. She may only see Aditha's face, his dazzling smile, expressive eyes and soothing voice and his spontaneous personality but to her family's eyes, only his status and his family name will be visible.
For the first time she became painfully aware of the social gap that hang like a Damocles sword above their heads.
