Kill Me Love Me final thoughts
I do enjoyed the drama even though I don't take it seriously lol I'm just looking at the aesthetics and costumes. It all started with me checking this out because Murong Jinghe is a type of character stereotype I'm currently obsessed in so all this time I'm projecting my fave characters into Murong Jinghe and Mei Lin's characters. AT LEAST IN THE BEGINNING! Joking aside! I love the main couple and their interactions to other characters. Yes, even if I complained about Murong Jinghe I do like him. I just love hard. You should heard me talking trash about my oshi from Utapri, Camus. I really appreciate that their relationship is not only about romantic. That they are also both traumatized people by the same event (Qingzhou incident) seeking for justice hence why they feel connected with each other in deeper level. I didn't even expect they can pull a long fighting sequence! For sure it has undeniably great potential but like everyone else, the 2nd half of the story didn't do it for me.
My problem with it is like Word of Honor drama. It started good but fell off later but since I already experienced WOH and Saiunkoku Monogatari. I handled my emotion better. It just that Word of Honor is a dangai so they have censorship to battle while KMLM don't have that problem in executing romance so naturally people are more strict to KMLM. They even erased the gay side couple, Qing Yan's love story.
False promotion - Their trailer introduced the story as toxic romance and so even episode 1 viewers promote it like that so I really thought I'll get a dark romance but its actually fluffier than I expected. I wish they included their sweets moment together in the trailer so people know what they are getting into. Just like how WOH released a fluffy trailer after their serious trailer. But I appreciate them including Murong Jinghe lashing out to Mei Lin's burial in the trailer and MV so I'm prepared she's going to die.
Murong Jinghe's hidden identity, the secret master of assassins - They unveiled this in 2nd episode already. Too early. I wish they just dropped few hints first in the first 5 episodes. Before actually telling the viewers the big mystery reveal. WOH did better in Wen Kexing.
Murong Jinghe's transition to softer image - Again, way too early. I don't hate his toned down version okay? I love it! It just that he trust Mei Lin easier. He's supposed to be traumatized so trusting Mei Lin so early is not convincing. Thanks to this they have to make the two breakup after Mei Lin witnessed the peacemaking beauties dying and blamed MRJH for it. He's at fault but its not entirely his fault.
Xiyan arc - 2nd half of the story. I don't really care much about the immortality thing tbh. Murong Xuanlie is such a good antagonist already. I think its better if they ended the story after defeating him.
Mei Lin's sharpness - I commend Wu Yujinyan's portrayal of Mei Lin. I really like her. I just wish they included that Mei Lin already suspecting Murong Jinghe is her master earlier in the story. But at least she always know he's a good general who wanted justice for his Weibei army in the drama.
Ending - First of all, my wish for the main couple is to go back to their remote village kinda life. That ending. Murong Jinghe can be a Qingzhou governor/general but I never see him as emperor figure. I wish he's only a regent and Princess Zi Gu's child didn't die with her. Saimono made me immune though so that's that. Let's just hope in their next life they can be together.
To compare with the book version, I think the book is better in getting to know each other or starting to trust stage of their relationship. Also! Believe it or not! Even if Book MRJH is worse in the book, it has happy ending lol. Mei Lin didn't die, she found her mom, and the gays have their own marriage. Yue Qin is a likable kid and Qing Yan is a gay eunuch.
But the drama version also has good points like they make the Qingzhou incident conflict to turn MRJH's revenge into noble cause, Murong Xuanlie's involvement in the story, Peacemaking Beauties close friendship with Mei Lin, MRJH becoming governor of Qingzhou to win back the people's trust etc. I love the little references they use from the novel such as wildflowers in Mei Lin's burial became undying flowers, MRJH's dog is a gift he gave to Mei Lin, Mei Lin giving him a sachet, Mei Lin's real name: Chun Hua, Them singing a song during their stay in the village, etc.
