Looking Back at 2022 Songs!

This month, I’ve been reflecting on the year in music and starting to create my best-of lists (though nothing is final until January 1, of course!). Some really awesome fall releases made me more excited about music than I’ve felt in a while, but then December releases have bored me a lot, leaving me to search for music to feed my craving elsewhere. In terms of December songs, I kind of like the NCT Dream album & Garnidelia's "Soten", and I REALLY like the Ava Max song, but something in my brain recoils at the thought of checking out the month's Christmas-y releases, which are the majority (well, Pheobe Bridgers and Jaurim's might get a pass from me, though we'll see). Yes, embarrassingly, I haven’t even listened to the NMIXX one that everyone seems to like. I just don't feel like Christmas, and if I ever do, I'll listen to Amy Winehouse's "Valerie" on repeat--that's all I really need in terms of holiday spirit. What I'm trying to say is, I'm in a space where my mind and my personal Discord server are cluttered with music from these past 12-ish months (especially as Top Songs of 2022 countdowns from people I follow start reminding me of all the releases I forgot about!), and I need some way to organize it--so here are some of the guidelines I'm using as I slowly piece together my mess of a Top Songs list!

a. longevity/replay value

-- This can include songs I've had on repeat for just, like, forever, along with songs that I came back to after months and still really like.

-- Does the mood of the song appeal to me?

-- Is the song memorable? Is there something about it I find myself craving?

-- Does the song have enough layers to keep me interested for long periods of time?

b. admiration

-- Would I enjoy writing about this song? Do I have a lot to say about it?

-- Do I look forward to returning to this release?

-- Right now, this category is most heavily weighted for me. In the cold gray of winter, I'm really appreciating songs that force their way past my lethargy and spark something in my brain.

c. impact

-- Which songs made my year?

-- Which songs helped me stay healthy in 2022? Music is my main method of emotional regulation, so the songs that help me with this are invaluable.

36 - name an underrated group.

SPICA!! They were considered an "older" group which in kpop terms made them go completely unnoticed and uncared for cause as we all know 25+ is too old for a woman in the industry. They were made up of incredible vocalists, some of whom trained other idols (infinite to be exact). They never got the love that they deserved imo and it saddens me. If I remember Lee Hyori created them, and solo artist Ailee actually cried on some tv program because she didn't understand why they weren't getting any recognition for their talents. Two of the women from this group went and formed keembo, but there have been talks of a potential reunion.

I had to think about this one ngl, cause while I might have a lot of opinions idk if they'd be considered unpopular. I think mine would be that more groups should have lore. Make up some dumb story that you're an alien or that you have super powers, idc I think it's great.

i was like that's kind of hard but then i had to narrow it down to just 3 lol. anyway so about kanghyun from onewe

he is one of the founding members of the band so he's been in it for 11 years

he did kendo when he was younger and won a bunch of medals

his birthday is only 3 days before mine 💜

i think i'm the only person obsessed with inside by keembo (ex spica duo) but i think a lot of people would like it if they heard it

I chose my "Reliable" playlist, which is songs I don't get tired of listening to and won't skip, most of the time.

1. Everybody Wants to Rule The World- Tears for Fears

Not gonna lie I would skip this one, but only because Spotify tends to overplay it when it realizes I actually like it. My favorite part is the post-chorus with the lyrics, "there's a room where the light won't find you."

2. Abittipsy- Youha

One of the many 80s-inspired kpop tracks to release in the successful wake of The Weeknd's "After Hours" and Dua Lipa's "Future Nostalgia". This song also reeks of the commute to my first job, which reminds me of how good I have it now 😭

3. Scandalous- KEEMBO

This is their most popular song, although that's not saying too much. Anywho if you don't scream with the random shriek in the backtrack, you're not doing it right. The guitar is also really satisfying and crunchy to me.

4. Onward and Over- Rogue Valley

A friend recommended this album to me and I found this absolute gem! The vibes of it are perfect and the violin in the bridge is why it was instantly playlisted.

5. My Doll- Oh My Girl

A really good song if you don't overplay it. "Closer" and "Nonstop" are their better songs.
