2020 Korean Baseball Organization Preview
The Korean Baseball Organization will start their 2020 season tomorrow and I wanted to take a closer look at the league. ESPN has reached an agreement with the league to broadcast one KBO game a day starting on May 5th. It’s the first sporting events we have seen since March 12th when major sports leagues and college sports announce the postponement and cancellation of games. Here’s a preview of the 2020 KBO season.
Doosan Bears (88-55-1) (2019 Korean Series Champions)
The defending champion Doosan Bears will be without their best pitcher from last season. Former Major Leaguer Josh Linblom went (20-3) with a 2.50 ERA last season. The Brewers signed him to a three-year deal. Right-handed starter Young-ha Lee will be back after posting a (17-4) record with a 3.64 ERA to lead the Bears. Former big leaguers Raul Alcantara and Chris Flexen will try to guide the pitching staff to repeat. Lee Hyung-Bum and Ham Deok-Joo shared closing duties last season. First basemen Jae-Il Oh led the team with 21 homers and 102 RBI’s in 2019. Jose Miguel Fernandez added fifteen homers last year as well.
Hanwha Eagles (58-86) Ninth Place
The Hanwha Eagles have a pair of former Detroit Tigers added to the pitching staff with Chad Bell and Warwick Saupold. That duo each won eleven or more games and led the starting staff. Chung Woo-Ram had 26 saves to lead the bullpen. Former Rangers Jared Hoying was second on the team with eighteen home runs. Lee Seong-Yoel had twenty-one homers to lead the Eagles.
Kia Tigers (62-80) Seventh Place
Aaron Brooks and Drew Gagnon head out to the KBO to try to turn around the Kia Tigers starting rotation. Joe Wieland and Jacob Turner had okay years for the Tigers, but they weren’t retained for the 2020 season. Lefty Yang Hyeon-Jong led the league with a 2.29 ERA. Former Major League outfielder Preston Tucker is back for his season season in Korea. He hit nine homers with 50 RBI’s in 2019.
KT Wiz (71-71-2) Sixth Place
The KT Wiz have Odrisamer Despaigne and William Cuevas to head the starting rotation for this season. Cuevas went (13-10) with a 3.62 ERA in 2019 for the Wiz. Rhee Dae-Eun led the bullpen with seveteen saves last year. Mel Rojas Jr. returns to the outfielder for the Wiz, where he hit twenty-four homers and drove in 104 runs.
LG Twins (79-64-1) Fourth Place
The LG Twins would be a popular team for Minnesota Twins fans because of their name. In college, one of my classmates was from Korea and his favorite team was the LG Twins. Casey Kelley and Tyler Wilson head the rotation. Former Major Leaguer Hyun-Soo Kim is on the Twins, where he hit eleven homers and drove in 82 runs.
Lotte Giants (48-94) Tenth Place
The Lotte Giants won only 48 games last season and were the worst team in the league. Dan Straily and Adrian Sampson come in to bolster the starting rotation, which had a 4.83 ERA as a team last year. Former Mariner Dae-Ho Lee has returned to Korea. He hit sixteen homers and drove in 88 runs in 2019. Former Tiger Dixon Machado will play for the Giants this year.
NC Dinos (73-69-2) Fifth Place
Former Twin Drew Rucinski had a solid year for the Dinos. He went (9-9) with a 3.05 ERA in 2019. Former Oriole Mike Wright will join him in the starting rotation. Outfielder Aaron Altherr has joined the Dinos for his first season of KBO baseball. The once promising prospect has a chance to make a splash this season. Jeong-Hyeon Won led the bullpen with 31 saves.
Nexen Heroes (86-57-1) Third Place (2019 Runners Up)
The Nexen Heroes were led by Byung-Ho Park with 33 homers to lead the KBO. Park is a five-time home run king and former Minnesota Twin. The team did lose former Dodger Jerry Sands, who had 113 RBI’s to lead the league. He signed with the Hanshin Tigers of the NPB. Jake Brigham and Eric Jokisch return after winning thirteen games last season apiece. Choo Sang-Woo and Oh Jae-Young shared the closing duties for the Heroes last year.
Samsung Lions (60-83-1) Eighth Place
David Buchanan joins the Lions alongside Ben Lively. Lively posted a (4-4) record with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts last year. Tyler Saladino will play in Korea after playing with the White Sox and Brewers for parts of five seasons. Darin Ruf led the Lions with twenty-two homers last year, but he was invited to camp with the San Francisco Giants. He was having a great spring until the season was put on hiatus.
SK Wyverns (88-55-1) Second Place
Ricardo Pinto and Nick Kingham help join the Wyverns for their first season in Korea. Jamie Romak had twenty-nine homers with 95 RBI’s in his third season int he KBO. Joeng Choi also added twenty-nine homers and the Wyverns finished second in the league, but lost in the playoffs to the Nexen Heroes. Ha Jae-Hoon led the team with thirty-six saves on the year.
The Korean Baseball Organization has produced current players like Shin-Soo Choo, Ji-Man Choi, and Hyun Jin-Ryu. Players like Byung-Ho Park, Hyun-Soo Kim, Sueng-Hwan Oh, and Dae-Ho Lee have tried Major League Baseball and returned to the KBO. ESPN will stream one game a day and has the schedule out for the first week of the season (see below). It will no doubt be interesting to watch games without fans, high fives, or even spitting. I’m excited to finally have baseball back on the air and look forward to producing more content.

Korean baseball returns this week to save us from sports withdrawal

Live sports and bat flips and dinos, oh my!
It’s anyone’s guess when Major League Baseball will return, but to fill the void Korea is stepping up with live action courtesy of the KBO League, and you really should be watching when it airs this week.
What is the KBO?
The KBO League was foundered in 1982 with six teams, expanding to its current 10 in 2015. These 10 teams play a 144 game season, with a five-team playoff series leading to crowning a champion. Teams have to rely on home-grown talent, with a strict limit on each club only carrying three foreign players into the season.
Rules are largely the same as U.S. baseball, however one key difference is how the KBO League can allow games to end in ties. There are strict 12 inning limits on single games (expanded to 15 innings in the playoffs) making for a more predictable viewing experience. You know roughly how long a KBO League game will take, without the risk of it languishing long into the night — and let’s face it, that’s good considering games will begin at 1 am ET.
Who are the teams?
Perhaps the greatest thing about Korean baseball is that teams aren’t necessarily based on geographic location, rather playing for the brands that own them. This is perfect for a U.S. baseball fan wading in for the first time. You may not have strong opinions about Daegu vs. Gwangju, but you might own a Samsung phone, or drive a Kia, which gives you an innate rooting decision.
Doosan Bears (Seoul): Owned by brewing giant InBev, they were originally foundered by a brewery.
Hanwha Eagles (Daejeon): Run by the massive Hanwha business conglomerate, the team was started by a candy company.
Kia Tigers (Gwanju): The Kia motor company.
Kiwoom Heroes (Seoul): A transient club, naming rights are currently owned by the Kiwoom Securities company, but have been owned in the past by Hyundai and Nexen Tire.
KT Wiz (Seoul): Owned by Korea Telecom.
LG Twins (Seoul): The LG electronics company owns the rights to the team.
Lotte Giants (Busan): Run by the Lotte Conglomeration, which owns candy factories, hotels, duty free stores and movie theaters.
NC Dinos (Changwon): Owned by the NCSoft video game studio which produced Guild Wars.
Samsung Lions (Daegu): Owned by the Samsung electronics company.
SK Wyverns (Incheon): The SK Conglomerate controls petroleum, chemical and energy industries in Korea.
So the choice is yours! Candy, beer, electronics, video games, cars — find whichever brand you like the most and start rooting!
Are there any players in the league I might know?
There isn’t a serious big-name player in the league right now, but here are the foreign players currently in the KBO League.
Also, former MVP Josh Lindblom got signed by the Brewers based on the strength of his incredible 2019 season. So there’s plenty of value in watching these players.
BAT FLIPS!
One of the best parts of Korean baseball in general is that batflips aren’t just accepted, they’re encouraged and celebrated. No unwritten rules about “honor” or “respect,” just a big ol’ hunk of wood flying through the air for our joy and amusement.
You owe it to yourself to read Mina Kimes’ amazing piece on Korean bat flips for ESPN the Magazine.

Live sports? I’m in. How do I watch?
The 2020 KBO League will air live on ESPN starting at 1 a.m. ET on May 5th. The first televised game will be between the NC Dinos and Samsung Lions.
Go Dinos.

Dinos, Giants remain unbeaten in KBO
NC Dinos 8 - Samsung Lions 2
- The Dinos stayed perfect on the season following six shutout innings from starting pitcher Koo Chang-moo, a 3-for-4 day from leadoff hitter Park Min-woo, and a home run from No Jin-hyuk.
- Lions starter David Buchanan allowed five earned runs in six innings pitched for the loss.
Lotte Giants 7 - KT Wiz 3
- The surprising Lotte Giants are the leagues other undefeated team, as they came from behind to defeat the KT Wiz. Trailing 3-1 heading into the seventh, the Giants offense scored three runs on a Son Ah-seop blast. They would tack on another run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to reach the final margin of 7-3.
- The bullpen for KT wasted a strong start from Bae Je-seong, who allowed two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. Every relief pitcher for the Wiz allowed at least one earned run.
Hanwha Eagles 8 - SK Wyverns 4
- Hanwha bounced back to defeat the Wyverns in game 3 of the KBO season and took the opening series.
- The Eagles exploded for six runs in the sixth inning of this one, and turned a 2-2 game into a rout. Jared Hoying, Lee Sung-yeol, and Song Kwam-min accounted for five Eagles RBI.
-Kim Joo-han allowed three earned runs in 2/3 of an inning for SK, and took the loss.
Doosan Bears 9 - LG Twins 3
- Doosan scored four runs in the fifth inning to break open a 3-3 tie, and then held LG in check to take the series.
- Jose Miguel Fernandez went 4-for-5, Park Kun-woo homered, and Kim Jae-hwan banged out three hits for the Bears.
- Offensively, the Twins could not hang with Doosan. The Twins recorded seven hits while the Bears put up 14.
KIA Tigers 8 - Kiwoom Heroes 5
- KIA salvaged a 1-2 start and avoided being swept with a come-from-behind win against Kiwoom. After a disastrous four-run first inning allowed and trailing 4-3 in the eighth, KIA hung five runs on Kiwoom and held on for their first win of the season.
- Five members of the KIA starting lineup had multi-hit games, including standout performances from Kim Sun-bin, Preston Tucker, and Choi Hyung-woo.
- The Heroes’ bullpen staggered to the finish line, as it took three pitchers to record the final six outs.
Starting on Day 4, the KBO teams will play different opponents for the first time this season! The matchups for the weekend are as follows:
- Hanwha Eagles vs Kiwoom Heroes
- KIA Tigers vs Samsung Lions
- KT Wiz vs Doosan Bears
- LG Twins vs NC Dinos
- SK Wyverns vs Lotte Giants
Check back tomorrow for Day 4 results!
