Dragon automaton
Laser cut plywood 24x22x10 cms.
Having replaced my K40 laser cutter with a Neje max4 I am trying to adjust to not being able to cut acrylic and having to go back to using plywood to make automata.
I have made a couple of very simple test pieces and wanted something a little more complex to play with and I like dragons, so this one is articulated somewhat after the fashion of a bicycle chain.
Bit of a bodge job, I had made the stage before I realised how big the dragon would need to be and in this case the wings and legs are fixed to a body section which moves rather than being articulated themselves, the waves on the sea move although it is not really obvious in the video.
As I get used again to plywood automata, the next time I make a dragon it will have larger articulated wings and each body segment will move.

Watching this video, you will learn, how to use a simple laser engraver( M2) doing same work as Ruida controller. Our new portable laser engraver, is an upgrade of the traditional K40 engraver, as we know, K40 is a very old model of small laser engraver. Now we have new upgrade one. more practical and safer.

So apparently I “take garbage photos” so here is the reblog of the pic my partner took.
//When your partner gets a laser engraver and then comes skipping into the office and says: Look AT IT!
@lostgangrel laser cut my digital painting on Henri. This is super cool to see how much detail comes through the piece and transfers to the wood. So here's to more weird stuff we will make in the future!

I designed these lamps as my entry for a design contest. It’s been a long while since I posted anything, but I am still working on new dice designs. In the meantime though, I have participated in the Trotec Design Awards 2019 competition with this design for two laser cut lampshades. I designed them to fit a basic lamp base and lamp cord from IKEA with the idea that these are available almost everywhere. They are made from lacquered birch triplex and can be assembled without tools or glue. The five-fold symmetrical flower shape is the result of the challenge I set myself to create an organic shape that does not immediately look like is was made from only flat pieces, and avoids using mostly 90 degree angles.
The competition is still in progress. If you'd like to help me try to win something, you can cast your vote through this form here. My entry is called "Lotus" Lampenkappen.

What I have been up to recently...
It is probably more accurate to describe what I have not been up to, I have been feeling a bit meh, and so not really productive and this has been compounded by circumstance.
I had decided that I was going to either have to spend some money on repairing my K40 laser, which needs new mirrors, lenses and probably a new tube and only has a smaller than A4 work area, or buy a new one, and it would probably be a diode laser with a significantly larger work area.
Now the issue for me with diode lasers is that they don't cut transparent acrylic which a lot of my work has been made in and I like it.
So having hummed and harred for several weeks I eventually bought the diode laser and since I was as mentioned above feeling a bit meh when it arrived it sat in the box for a couple of days before I even opened it. Then to compound the issue the limit switch doesn't work properly, easily worked round but aggravating.
Eventually get it up and running and realise it makes a lot of smoke when cutting the card and plywood that I am now going to use so it needs a cabinet which takes up even more space in my kitchen than the K40 did.
So I start to think about going back to first principles and making some very simple automata and then my computer starts to report that my hard drive is failing and I need to back-up my files and replace the hard drive.
It would still boot, until it wouldn't, so I bought a new computer and had to find the passwords for all my accounts and have lost quite a lot of photos. At some point I may attempt to recover them, the hard drive still spins up it just wont boot.
So to the photos above, my new toy does cut 3mm plywood really well, and I am getting to grips with LaserGRBL and Inkscape instead of CorelDraw and am feeling a little more enthusiastic about things so time to do some serious playing with my new toys.

Still figuring out the laser cutter, but here is a first attempt at a box. Picture is official art from Heroes of the Storm, design of the box is my own. Material is 3mm birch ply with pecan stain and clearcoat. First draft of the box shown in the top photo. I am pretty happy with this overall, but I will probably be redesigning the whole thing before I make another, it was too finicky to assemble.

Get Started 3D Laser Printing with a K40
The 3D printers we have all become familiar with over the last ten years use an additive process to create objects from digital maps. The X,Y,Z mechanisms contained within their erector set frames, lay rows of molten plastic one on top of the other to build up structures millimeter by millimeter. They are fantastic machines that continue to amaze with their ability to bring items from our…

So i got a new adjustable head from american photonics and needed to lower the bed to use the adjustability of it so instead of lowering the bed permanently i made my own version of an adjustable bed simular to what you find on 3D printers. This can go as low as 1in off the bottom so plenty of adjustment from both the bed and head (once i install it.) #laser #modified #k40 #k40laser #adjustable #diy #diyprojects #3dprinting #3dprinter https://www.instagram.com/p/CEPnN_1jbfm/?igshid=2nojz7cs1gvn
