'...Catherine Called Birdy (2022)
Between their high-profile stints on HBO series like Game of Thrones and The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey starred in this bright historical comedy, adapted from the beloved 1994 YA novel Catherine, Called Birdy. Ramsey plays Lady Catherine, or, as she prefers “Birdy,” a scrappy 14-year-old who must deal with unwanted suitors while striving to maintain her independence. Rejecting the traditional path of a noble young woman, Birdy is ahead of her time, plucky, rambunctious, and bursting with ideas. EW’s critic calls Catherine Called Birdy “a sly fairytale about a medieval tween that manages to be both cheeky and modern without losing its heart.” —K.J.
Where to watch Catherine Called Birdy: Amazon Prime Video

Most noteworthy being the one which cleaves his right eyebrow in half [Robin I], track marks inside of his elbows, upper arms, and thighs [fear toxin self-injections], a slash across his nose [the Joker], a large discoloration on his left shoulder [Killer Croc], and a long scar that circles around the base of his neck [Victor Zsasz] RELATIONS [note a few @ are friends i prob only know their dA handle to] Parents: Vinny [deceased] and Katherine [estranged] Terring Siblings: Eva Terring [estranged] Friends: Erin Knightly-Tetch @little-red-xoxo, Dick “Nightwing” Grayson, Penelope “Stage Fright” Caskett @poltergeistprincesa, Jervis “The Mad Hatter” Tetch, Molly “Blondie” Weiss @Triskata Partner/s: Scattered one night stands, notably henchwenches; M. "Last Encore" (ev.) @whispering-lava Misc.: The Joker, Harley Quinn, Gi “Geode” Flores, Janus Lyssa @SherlyWats, Madelyn “Angelica” Farro @The-Brain-Teaser, Jadis “Killcode” [Surname Redacted] @whispering-lava Affiliations: The Tetch Family; The Joker Gang [formally] PERSONALITY Personality Type: ESTP-A [Assertive Entrepreneur] Temperament: Sanguine-Choleric Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Playful | Witty | Erratic | Careless | Brutal Miles’ “daytime” persona is a friendly, quick-to-joke man who takes all things in stride. He possesses a casual cheeriness and an easygoing attitude that aids him in making quick acquaintances and even a fair amount of friends, even if he’s notably private about his personal life. It’s usually written off as him having a generally quiet bachelor lifestyle. He’s best known from his job as a waiter at a tea and sweets shop named The Mad Tea House, where he lets his more impish traits shine through to his fellow employees. He’s been guilty of child-like pranks, shirking responsibilities onto others, and being a bit of a gadfly when he feels things have gotten too quiet in the tea house. As Killjoy, he’s violent, disturbingly reckless, fueled by spite, and follows no logic other than his own. He wastes no time looking for retaliation when he perceives a wrong done against him. K.J’s sense of humor is abundantly morbid, his words often tinged with irony and false jolly. He thoroughly enjoys getting under people’s skin and milking their uncomfortableness. In truth, there are very few things Miles takes seriously, but the one thing he sets above all else are his ties of loyalty. As rash as he is in regards to his own well-being, all bets are off once someone he comes to care for is in harm’s way. While he argues he finds this annoying about himself, it’s also his one source of proof showing he hasn’t completely lost his way. ABILITIES AND WEAKNESSES Metahuman Biology: Originally, Miles’ metagene was tied to his adrenal glands, allowing a boost in bio-stats such as improved strength and reflexes. Years of fear toxin dosing further strengthened this metagene. Unbeknownst to him, his metagene was continually evolving, correlating with his need for survival. His eventual death “rebooted” the metagene, jump starting his body, and fully allowing it to unfurl.
- Immortality: Miles has recently discovered his inability to die by various means. His body heals regentively and is immune to fatal poisons and toxins. - Adrenaline Surge/Blitz Mode: His adrenaline bursts allow him enhanced strength, speed, agility and reflexes. During these “Blitzes,” Miles turns into a one-man wrecking crew, plowing through obstacles and opponents through sheer determination. - Pain Tolerance: Has an abnormally high tolerance to pain, does not mean he can’t feel pain, it simply doesn’t hinder his ability to think or move. (Ex. He can burn his hand, and he feels the same amount of pain anyone else would in the same situation, he just won't react to it if he chooses not to) While Miles is officially immortal by way of being unnaturally resilient, he is still able to experience symptoms and side effects of diseases, poisons and toxins. His healing factor slows in colder temperatures, stopping completely when it drops to freezing points. Heavy damage to his head area hinder him considerably and Miles still feels the after effects after having healed (ie. slurred speech, blurry vision, dizziness). He is extremely susceptible to electric attacks, as it overrides his nervous system, prompting unconsciousness. Gear/Weapons: - Frowny Face Mask: Besides serving as a trademark symbol, Killjoy’s mask comes equipped with mapping and schematic information, allowing for quick and easy navigation. - Voice Changer: An electronic patch attached to his throat allows Killjoy to copy various voices, ranging across age and gender. - Signal Scrambler: Killjoy operates on a generally covert level, sometimes communication from one party to another isn’t in his best interest - Assorted Explosives: Killjoy’s go-to toys, these are generally self explanatory. They vary in size and demolition damage. For the sake of irony, Killjoy is fond of deadman switches. - Weighted Gloves: Serve as built-in brass knuckles, K.J’s preferred melee weapon 3 in. Balisongs: Two of them to be precise, these typically only come out when simple bruises aren’t cutting it anymore. - Grappling Gun: Useful to get around the city landscape. The blue labeled gun. - 9mm Handgun: Killjoy dislikes having to use this one, if it’s in his hand, he’s officially stopped fooling around. The red labeled gun. - Joyride: A custom-built Camero, Killjoy’s prized possession and getaway car HISTORY TW: SUICIDE MENTION Jess Terring, better known in the Gotham Underground as Jester, shot through headlines despite his years of generally low profile work as a simple Joker lackey. Charged with the deaths of dozens and injuries of several more by result of a fatal explosion, he was to spend a life sentence at Arkham Asylum, his protests of innocence falling on deaf ears. His attempts at an appeal were overruled, even with figures such as Batman and Nightwing looking into his case for him. Arkham Asylum was hell on Earth for Jess. His shreds of hope fell apart as the months crawled on, his mental state deteriorating in the process. He had never wanted to get involved with the Joker, all he’d been was a good-for-nothing conman who’d gotten too greedy. His last four years as Jester had been a never-ending nightmare. Things finally culminated during a free-for-all jailbreak at Arkham where Jess, along with other inmates, were cornered on the roof. Unable to stomach the idea of being thrown back in the cell he was wrongfully given and simply tired of the misery, he jumped. Jess Terring was proclaimed dead by suicide off Arkham Asylum… The last thing Jess expected to happen was to wake up in a morgue. Barely coherent and running on sheer instinct, Jess managed to escape, although not without killing the on-duty mortician. His first official kill and he hadn’t felt a thing. He wouldn’t reflect on it until after clearing Gotham City, and even then, he realized it wasn’t the mortician’s death that bothered him, but rather he didn’t feel anything about it to begin with. Between recognizing his new lack of humanity and hearing the joker-like laugh escaping him, Jess broke. He spent the following months wandering the states as a nameless face. The bizarre events surrounding Jess’ death was eventually swept away by the everflowing stream of news media and within the year, faded into obscurity. It was the best he could have hoped for, free from the Joker’s grasp and unknown, but his thoughts kept returning back to Gotham City. The more the thoughts plagued him, the angrier he got. The Joker had gotten off scot-free, having framed him for the initial massacre and ran him to the ground, eventually turning him into...whatever he was. While a part of him argued he’d be better off cutting his losses, he found himself unable to set it aside and he set course back to Gotham City. He didn’t have a plan so much as he did an outline, but he soon figured out he wasn’t required to be especially careful anymore. Being nigh-indestructible made for a good buffer. He’d finally found a blessing through his curse and through trial-and-error quickly fashioned himself as a makeshift mercenary. During this time he worked under a variety of names, involving himself in several under-the-radar jobs in order to fund what would eventually be his official M.O. He marked his entrance into Gotham with a string of bomb hits on territories tied to the Joker. As of now, not many are sure what to make of this new face, some cheering for his more direct approach on the Clown Prince, others exhausted with the prospect of another nut on the scene, and even a few seedier folk wanting to get him on their payroll. He’s unconcerned by it all, but he finds himself liking the ring to the name circling around him. Killjoy. NOTES - Killjoy mostly classifies as a serial bomber, targeting hideouts and planned heist hits. While he will set up evacuations so as to not injure more people than he has to, he’s fairly flippant about collateral damage - Despite his nonchalance towards violence, Killjoy does what he can to keep things non-lethal. His way of vengeance is a shot to the knee rather than a shot to the head. It’s not that he has a problem killing, it’s just as an immortal, death is the easy way out. - It’s believed Miles’ drastic change in personality comes from multiple factors instead of just one large catalyst (ie. years of fear toxin injection, joker gas inhalation, the trauma of death and resurrection) - The name Miles Manson doesn’t have any particular meaning, it had been a name he improvised and he grew fond of it. He severely hates being called Jess. - He suffers from night terrors, likely due to his usage of fear toxin in the past. He also experiences flashbacks akin to HPPD, albeit rarely - He can withstand an extreme amount of physical abuse and keep his wits about him, but once it passes a certain threshold, his mental state will eventually slip into a frenzy. Unable to consciously keep hold of himself, he will become animalistically brutal to anyone in his vicinity. - K.J mostly concerns himself with causing problems for the Joker, although he can be moved to ally with others for other reasons when he finds fit. Notably, he’s stuck a somewhat fickle truce with Nightwing over the rising number of metatrafficking rings in Gotham and Blüdhaven.

You wake to the sound of your alarm blaring. Odd. You don’t remember setting it. Today is your day off, and you were planning on spending it pampering yourself. Everyone you know is busy with life stuff, having already sent you cards and presents. So today was just gonna be you with your thoughts… and possibly the bathtub and some scented candles. Maybe binge something on Netflix or catch a movie marathon.
You stretch your arms and legs and reach for the button to turn off the offending device. Looking down at the table as you reach and tap the off button, you notice an envelope. On it is your name in very fancy script. It looks like it was penned by hand, but you don’t recognize the handwriting. Curiosity gets the best of you and you open it.
Inside are several smaller envelopes. The one labeled “Open First”, is on top. You open it and inside is a card with a silhouette of a birthday cake on it, done in watercolor. You hum in appreciation. Someone else in the house must have brought it into your room, before they left for the day.
Inside of the card is what appears to be an invitation. You scowl. Who would send you a birthday invitation to someone else’s party, on your birthday? Seems a bit rude. You keep reading. On the line labelled “guest of honor” is your name. Okay, this is strange. Someone you don’t know is throwing you a birthday party. You look through the stack of envelopes to find the one with a big number 2 on the front.
Opening it, you realize there is a bunch of confetti and a letter. The confetti is a mixture of what appears to be different items that hint at the fandoms you are part of. Some are people, others are more obscure. This makes you smile, as you dump it on your bed and throw it up in the air and watch it flutter back down. You know you probably look like a child, but you love stuff like this and no one can see you anyways so why not have some fun with it?
The letter describes the point of the contents of the envelope. This is sort of a mini scavenger hunt. You are to follow the instructions in the letters and at the end of the adventure, there is a prize.
The first instructions are to get up, get dressed, tend to any bathroom needs (whichever order is best for you), and go downstairs. Once down there, you are to open the envelope with the number 3 on it.
You move to the bathroom, perform your morning ritual, and head to your closet to look for something to wear. Inside, you find an outfit on a hanger with a note “wear me”. Not your usual choice for day-off clothes, but you shrug and put on the outfit. It is sort of business casual. You find the matching boots and put those on.
You gather up everything you’ve opened so far and you head downstairs. Once in the kitchen, you open the appropriate envelope. It instructs you to eat a hearty breakfast. One that will give you a lot of energy but not be too heavy on the stomach. Once that’s done, it tells you to open envelope number 4.
You fix yourself some of your favorite foods along with a pot of coffee. You pour yourself a cup, enjoying the quiet of the morning, thinking over the envelopes.
While you drink your second cup of coffee, you look over the letters you’ve already opened. Each one seems to be written by someone different, and each page has initials in the corner. You find this interesting. The invitation seems to have the same initials as all the letters you’ve opened so far. They line the very bottom of the page. You don’t remember them being there when you opened the invitation, initially. The first letter has “Dr. S.R.” in the bottom corner. The second one has “D.W.” in the corner. The note on your clothes has the initials “R.M.” on it. Letter number three has “S.W.” in the corner. The gears start to turn, as you mull over what the initials could mean.
Eagerly, you finish your breakfast and open letter number 4. Inside is a map. It looks like a map of your neighborhood, with some added streets. The new additions are where you are to go. At the bottom of the map are the initials “K.J.” This is the last thing to open so you are hoping that once you get to where the map tells you to go, you will find more clues.
Heading to the door, you pull on your coat, and reach for your hat. Pinned to it is a note that reads “Don’t forget me!” with the initials, “J., MH”.You smile at this and put the hat on your head.
Before walking out the door and locking up, you check to make sure all the letters, notes, and envelopes are in your bag. You aren’t sure you will need them, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. You adjust your scarf and take a few steps down your walkway. The wind seems to have changed, and isn’t as biting as usual for this time of year.
This makes you smile. It seems like even the wind wants to be helpful, as you make your way closer and closer to the prize at the end of your adventure.

New Vikings receiver Osborn speeds off to another big-time stage

Keeping a low profile might be a work in progress.
“I’m not sure if I should really be announcing that,”…

BOOKS, PROCEEDINGS of congresses The book by Dr. Korotkov “Human Energy Field. Study with GDV Bioelectrography” has been translated into French by Jean-Marie Danze. Proceedings of the VIII International Congress “Science. Information. Spirit.” 2004. St. Petersburg. Russia. The edition is devoted to the VIII International Congress on Bioelectrography which took place 3-5, July, 2004 in St.-Petersburg. In this book, articles reflecting the basic directions of researches in the field of medical, applied bioelectrography and water study are collected. The materials submitted in the book predetermine availability of the further researches on improvement of the method GDV and its subsequent introduction into the international medical, sports and research practice. Measuring Energy Fields: State of the Science. Author: K. Korotkov Volume I in the GDV Bioelectrography series presents recent studies and applications of the Gas Discharge Visualisation (GDV) technique. Our previous books were created by a small group of associates. This volume presents a wide range of articles by authors from different countries. After seven years of development, the GDV techniques entered a new stage of “catalytic growth” with innovative methods emerging from various laboratory and clinical settings. Research by independent groups around the world demonstrates that the GDV technique provides methods for recording subtle dynamics in the energy fields of objects with various natures. GDV assessment methods are demonstrated to have a wide range of important applications in medicine, sports performance, materials testing, as well as analytic studies of human consciousness and spiritual healing. “Human Energy Field: study with GDV bioelectrography” Author: K. Korotkov This book is dedicated to the presentation of the scientific foundations and practical applications of the Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV) technique. This technique represents a revolutionary new method for the study of biological subjects, namely biological energy fields. This research extends scientific tradition, developed in Russia in the twentieth century. The Human Energy Field carries information on physical, mental and spiritual states of a human being, and the GDV Bioelectrography technique is the first method in the world which gives an opportunity to study this information. Utilizing the latest advances in technology, such as microelectronics, computer imaging, and data mining, scientists have been able to create an entirely new class of scientific instruments that allow the practitioner to view, measure and analyze biological subjects in a manner that has never been possible before. The GDV technique has been found to have numerous highly important applications in medicine, sports, consciousness studies, material testing and other areas, discussed in this book… Whether the reader is a physicist, poet or philosopher, this technique offers an entirely new understanding of the world in which we live. Each encounter simply confirms the wisdom contained in all the holy books of every religion. We are all one. We are all connected. We are the interrelation of Matter, Information and Spirit. Ch.20 “Quantum-Health” system of health analysis. “Aura and Consciousness: New stage of scientific understanding” Author: K. Korotkov What is Aura from modern point of view and how it may be studied and measured? How we can measure consciousness influence to the physical world? How GDV technique is related to Kirlian photography? All these topics and a lot of others are discussed in this book. Mainly it is dedicated to results of GDV technique basics and practical applications – the technique has drawn strength both from quantitative processing and the new scientific understandings of subtle dimensions. GDV technique benefits both from the beauty of colorful star-like pictures and from the accuracy of their statistical analysis.

PHOT301 - Mileage May Vary - Work in Progress Zine & Experimental Journal Ideas
The zine is something that I had mentioned in the formative assessment for PHOT301. I wanted to make this because I was curious to see how this body of work came together in a book/zine/magazine format. One of the end results that I want to have for the FMP is a coffee table style book that can be viewed at Free Range, and contain a multitude of images from this project that clearly shows what my project is about. For this, I need to run a few tests to figure out what I should be creating, and how to make it.
For this, I decided to create a zine style of booklet, displaying images from this project that I particularly enjoy. The rationale for the selection process was selecting the cars that had an air of intrigue within them, whether that be with damage to the vehicle, or that the vehicle is particularly rare to see. I then decided to lay out the zine with the cars in chronological order, going from oldest to newest. However, it finishes with the aftermath of the crash that happened very close to where I was staying during Christmas, but sadly missing its departure only by an hour or so.
The front cover was also something that I was contemplating for a while, and was the most worrisome part of the whole experience. I knew how I wanted to display my images, and how which ones I wanted, but was very unsure on what would represent the front cover. I have always wanted to rejuvenate my graphic design style of work that I undertook during my Access Course and PHOT103.
This is my favourite example from Exploded Image, all the way back in first year. This project was mainly a spin on our very alienating, fast paced and transport centric world. It was heavily influenced by Stanley Donwood’s artwork for the ever inspiring 1997 OK Computer by Radiohead. This is a style I have wanted to revive and to place elements of it into my current work - I also find it interesting how a lot of the earlier aspects of my degree are surfacing up again, which is a welcome change to the fairly similar work that was undertaken during year two.
I had an idea of what I wanted to create, but unsure about how undertake it. The graphic elements had to be a part of it to make somewhat of a statement with the front cover. I don’t necessarily want it to be a straight photograph, as it only really tells you about the photograph, rather than the project. Subtle hints to what the project is about, seems like a good aim for me.
Before
After
Above, is what I had created. I chose to use the cluster of parked Fiats and Alfa Romeo as it featured a good amount of cars, rather than a singular vehicle in the image. I opened it up into GIMP and erased away the surroundings, only keeping the parked cars. The photograph was then desaturated and then coloured red in a gradient map style, with an added a bitmap style of manipulation. This was the emulate the newspaper print styling of new reports of the scheme, and the red colouring represents the Labour government that brought the scheme to fruition.
The plates were also covered up with a piece of paper that I found around a while ago. Its a form of tag which was most likely used to detail scrap parts in a yard, by K.J. Pike.
The back features a few options to fill in, mostly in a warehouse setting. K.J. Pike comes up as a company in Blandford Forum that repairs and refurbishes trolleys. Annoyingly I can’t remember where I found it, but I do remember that it was on a rather wet and drizzly day, and it was stuck to the road. I also knew that I had use it at some point for MMV.
Final Version
There is also a second version which has been edited differently and features no blacks and blends more into the white. For me, I prefer this version purely because it blends more into the whites and the aesthetic is likened to poster design, of which I enjoy. This was created by adjusting the contrast and the lightness of the colouring, with the addition of the ‘scrapped’ tag being merged into the car layer.
The front cover has been kept fairly clean and clinical. I wanted there to be a lot of white space like a gleaming shopping mall to juxtapose the featuring images, with the cover to represent the entire project in such a way that it doesn’t spell it out - almost having a level of ambiguity to it. I also used Roboto Condensed for all of the writing (albeit minimal) as I rather like the modern sans style font. It also manages to lend itself quite well to the graphic design style of the cover image.
This isn’t just an online zine, it is also a physical one. I wanted to have something physical, as it seemed a shame to not have anything physical apart from a selection of prints. The zine is more of a work in progress publication, rather than what the final thing will look like. I wanted to see how my images work in a physical space, culminated into a small A4 booklet. I decided to print this at The Artside, just so I could have it fastback bound. I didn’t want to have it stapled together, or have it ring bound as I am not a massive fan of both of those options for something that will be a photo book in the end. Stapling the book will make it look like a magazine, and ring binding will make it more of a document. Fastback binding, to me, looks far more professional and sleek, keeping everything clean and low profile. It was printed onto 200gsm satin card with a black card backing.
The print quality is pleasing, and perfectly fits the ‘zine’ aesthetic. An example of the front cover here shows the sharpness of the print, in addition to the colour reproduction. The photographs of the zine was taken with my Lumix G1 with a CCTV 25mm F1.4 lens. This lens gives a unique swirly bokeh and the fast aperture of F1.4.
In total, this zine cost me £15 including printing and binding, which I think is a decent price for the end result. Not to mention that it only took around 30 minutes to make, so it was nice to hand in my PDF file, grab a coffee and come back with it all finished and ready to take home. Another bonus to this, is supporting a local business. While it is sometimes nice to order a nice photo book online, I would rather help support local business who still get a good footfall of students come in for there printing - it keeps them in business and provides us with quality products. Whilst this is a good thing, I would also like to invest in a thermal binder somewhere down the line, so I would be able to make my own zines. However, for the time being I am happy to support local businesses and keeping them going. I am also happy with the zines outcome, and I am looking forward to seeing what I’ll be able to create next with the up and coming work flow.
Experimental Journal Plans
The experimental research journal takes on the same form of the zine, in terms of the cover at least. This is to keep a level of continuity within the project. However, I would like to make it more of a manual rather than a journal, and link in some MOT certificate aspects.
This shows the changes to the MOT certificate back in 2018, with the older version on the left and the new version on the right. I would like to utilise the older version, which would contain details about the shoot/research, with the opposite page showing contact sheets/images and practitioners work. Along with this will be an ‘advisories’ and a ‘reasons for failure’ section detailing things to change and things that didn’t work. These are to reflect the MOT test needed for cars to stay on the road.
The journal will include all shoots, containing the contact sheets and some highlighted images. Practitioners work will also be included with the same advisory and failure sections. These sections will be redacted and kept to a very minimal word count. This blog is very wordy, and I want the experimental/condensed journal to be a cut down version of my shoots and contextual information that advises my thinking. This shall also be created in Canva, following the same front cover and adding the MOT certificate base to form the journal.

*Someone’s* aggressive D will decide Florida-Miami in Week 0
Either Florida’s aggressive safeties or Miami’s experienced front could take over in Orlando.
The Gators and Hurricanes’ season opener in Orlando will likely be billed as the battle for Florida, although you could argue that the state’s best team is from Orlando itself and won’t be involved. Dan Mullen’s UF went 10-3 in his first year, winning a New Year’s bowl and generating a lot of momentum. Miami will start Year 1 under Manny Diaz, whom the Canes recalled from Temple to replace the retiring Mark Richt after a disappointing 7-6 season.
In addition to the recruiting stakes in Florida, the Gators have additional hopes of competing for the SEC East. Diaz has hit the ground running in Miami with a bunch of high-profile transfers and could rebound quickly in the vulnerable ACC Coastal.
With Florida State floundering, ESPN might as well make a Florida heavyweight champion belt and hand it to the winner. That’s what a victory will do for someone’s perception. Here are some games to watch unfold within the first big game of the 2019 season.
Miami’s offense and Florida’s defense are designed to beat each other. The Gators’ safeties might decide who wins that matchup.
Florida and Miami have a long rivalry, but these coaching staffs have quite a bit of history together too. Diaz was Mullen’s defensive coordinator at Mississippi State in 2015. While he was there, he faced an Arkansas offense coordinated by Enos, who lost the game but won the exchange against Diaz in a 51-50 MSU victory over the Razorbacks. After taking over at Miami, Diaz went and secured Enos from Alabama to run the Miami offense.
Enos’ Arkansas offenses were renowned for their run/pass balance, tying their run and pass games close together with play-action, and even doing so via lead draw looks:
Then, as Alabama QB coach, Enos helped oversee a more RPO-based offense with Tua Tagovailo. The Tide married the run and pass games out of the shotgun.
In Miami’s spring game, prospective starter Tate Martell showed some comfort with both styles, executing some rollouts and misdirection handoffs from under center while also completing an 80-yard scoring strike on an RPO from the gun:
youtube
There, he’s hitting Buffalo grad transfer K.J. Osborn, who caught 53 balls for 892 yards in 2018 and now is poised to be a primary target for the Canes’ RPO/PAP (play-action pass) attack. Martell is also enjoying protection from Butler grad transfer Tommy Kennedy, whom the Canes brought in to shore up pass protection on a young line.
Enos’s system is hard to stop because of the way he mixes in the lead draw and some old-school, smash-mouth run schemes as a way to attack teams with play-action concepts. Those sorts of run/pass conflicts are tricky enough, but college defenses don’t see them as much as they used to with all of the attached motions and actions that Enos utilizes.
The Gator might better off than some others on Miami’s schedule. Todd Grantham’s defense returns six DBs who have started at least five games, as well as DE Jabari Zuniga (second-leading pass-rusher) and MLB David Reese (second-leading tackler).
The Gators like to play with two-deep coverage when they can and rely on their speed on the back end to force opponents to maintain drives, often playing the safeties flat-footed at the snap while they read for run or pass.
That sets up a battle where the game might come down to how well the Florida safeties pick up on run or pass cues and are able to close the exact windows Enos’ system is designed to open up for his QBs.
The Gators’ biggest danger area: What happens when a rebuilt offensive line goes up against a strong, experienced D in Week 1?
Miami has been starting the same three linebackers for the last three seasons, and all are now seniors. While the Canes will be rebuilding their line somewhat and finding a few new starters in the secondary, the trio of Zach McCloud, Shaquille Quarterman, and Michael Pinckney gives the the most experienced linebacker corps in the country.
The Canes run an aggressive front and brought in Jaelan Phillips (UCLA), Chigozie Nnoruka (UCLA), and Trevon Hill (Virginia Tech) to buttress the line, while Bubba Bolden (USC_ will join the secondary at safety. All but Phillips will be able to take the field immediately, giving Miami an infusion of extra athleticism across the defense.
The question of whether Florida can contend with Miami’s pressures and speed up front is the same question that will likely define how the Gators fare in the SEC. Feleipe Franks benefitted immensely from Mullen’s new spread and showed off some running ability in the new scheme. He’ll also have RB Jordan Scarlett and top target Van Jefferson back.
But the 2018 Gators were built around the run game and led by an OL with a four-year starter at LT in Martez Ivey and another multi-year starter and then NFL Draft pick at RT in Jawaan Taylor (besides a few other returning starters). In 2019, they’ll be starting over with a pair of returning starters inside and new tackles on either edge.
It’s hard to win on passing downs against the Miami pass rush, which includes a variety of pressure packages and blitzes besides the talented members of their starting DL.
For instance, this blitz that yielded a strip-sack and launched a Miami comeback against Florida State last year:
That’s a dime package with nickel Romeo Finley and safety Sheldrick Redwine down in the box and unexpectedly overloading the edge opposite a slide protection. The Canes excel at playing the passing-down games of manipulating and anticipating protection calls to go where the blocking is weakest. Miami was No. 1 nationally in sack rate in 2018 and returns all those blitzing linebackers, so this is a stiff test for the rebuilt Gators OL.
It comes back to the run game, where Florida made its bones in 2018. Mullen drew up formations and schemes to allow the Gators to face lighter boxes, and they had a solid variety of power and zone schemes for overpowering whoever remained near the trenches. Here they are picking up a Georgia blitz and shoving the Bulldogs off the ball:
Only one of the Gators O-linemen on the field for that play will take the field for Florida against Miami: senior Nick Buchanan, who held things down at center. Buchanan was solid in 2018 and will now be counted on to direct the fresh recruits to his right and left — against one of the best and most experienced pass rushes in the country.
Both of these teams will look to put together a lot on offense in hopes of making runs in their respective divisions. The Miami turnover chain and experienced Florida secondary both loom large over this game. Whichever manages to make its presence felt loudest will end the game holding that state title belt.
