This was a brief Pokemon comic that I started working on. I wasn't really happy with how the pages were written so I decided to scrap it- on top of the notion that my attempt to draw humans always comes out so awkward-looking.
I may still utilize a scene like this, but hopefully re-purpose it into a different PMD-styled comic instead.
Even if it won't be continued, I still like how the panels turned out, and little Pichu-Juvon looked so freakin' cute in Nico's arms I just can't-

“Devon's at Charles Lee Ray’s house.” Jake dejectedly tells his blonde friend. He feels dizzy, like he’s fading in and out of consciousness. “And he’s not picking up. SHIT!”
Is this what they mean when they say your heart drops?
When they say your world is thrown off its axis?
“Jake!” He’s thrown back into the now by Lexy’s shout directed at him.
The blonde girl looks at him and asks in concern; “Are you okay?”
Honestly speaking, he doesn’t know and he says such as he looks at Devon’s picture on his phone. The photo is one he took when he caught the other boy mid laugh, his eyes closed and face lit up. Shaking the memory of the sound of his laugh out of his mind, Jake presses the ‘call’ option again.
No answer.
Lexy comes closer to him and rests her hand on his shoulder, “he’s gonna be fine. C’mon it’s Dev. If anyone is going to survive a homicidal supernaturally possessed doll, it’s him.” she comforts with an attempt at levity as she requests an Uber to the childhood home of said homicidal doll.
“What if we get there too late?” Jake can literally feel his anxiety spiking and starts pacing. “I can't lose Devon Lexy, I won't. I refuse to.” he rambles.
He keeps calling Devon's phone until finally:
“Hey-”
“My God Devon, I’ve-”
“You've reached Devon Evans. I can’t answer my phone right now so text me instead, bye!”
“FUCK” Jake shouts into his speaker before pressing too hard on the screen as he hangs up.
Jake’s pacing now, unable to stand still
‘He’s all that keeps me going.
God Dev, what were you thinking?!’ the curly haired boy internally monologs.
Everything around him is nothing but white noise. Everything falls away; Chucky, Lexy, the deaths, all of it as the only thing in the front of his mind is Devon.
He's looking out the Cross’s kitchen window as if willing the Uber to arrive quicker.
‘I need you to be fine, Dev. There’s so much I haven't said to you..’
In an attempt to control his hyperventilating and rushing thoughts, Jake Wheeler turns to lean on one of the counters and the Good Guy Doll he got from the bus station catches his eye.
‘It’s fucking mocking me. It knows how much Devon means to me and it’s having a laugh at my precious Devon's expense.’ he glares at the red headed doll in front of him.
Lexy hasn't spoken in what feels like forever to Jake but in reality is less than two minutes.
“We’re gonna get Dev back. I promise you.”
Whirling his face around to look at her, he loudly asks “how? How can you promise that?”
at her silence his shoulders slump like a puppet whose strings were cut:
“I've done nothing but fail him this entire time, Lex’. No, it’s true.” he rushes to say when he sees her mouth open, probably to reassure him that he didn’t let the third member of their trio down.
Jake smiles to himself, “you know I can remember the first time I saw him? It was third grade, Mrs Williamson’s class, I wasn't the ‘school freak’ yet so I was sitting with some kid I can't even remember. Our elementary school principal walked in and told us we had a new classmate, then he came in and I swear Lexy something drew me to him..I immediately wanted to be his friend. to bask in his sunlight.” If he closes his eyes Jake swears he can just see little eight year old Devon, introducing himself without a hint of hesitation in his voice standing there beaming with two missing front teeth, a pink backpack with its straps on his tiny shoulders, fearless as always.
He doesn’t see it but Lexy has a smile of her own on her face. She might not remember the play by play but; she does remember Devon Evans being shown to sit next to her crush Logan Wheeler Jr and by the end of the day they were talking like they’d been friends for years, till this day seven years later.
“Yeah, he’s always been the most outgoing and kindest person in our grade. You know he’d sneak Jun-Jun a cookie everyday? Because your uncle had started him on this insane training diet and he wasn’t allowed anything fun. But little Devon Evans saw Junior eye a piece of candy one time and never forgot to bring extra sweets for him each and every day. Whether it be cake or a lollipop without fail he made sure that there was always something for Junior. He still does it to this day actually.” she affectionately reminisces.
Jake looks up at his friend, surprised at how fond she sounds, how thoughtful Devon has always been and how close it seems Junior and Devon actually are.
“A lot of Jun-Jun’s smiles lately are because of him if I’m being honest with myself. I haven’t been the kindest to him…or Dev…or you…or anyone really,” the oldest Cross daughter sadly chuckles to herself.
The tall 14 year old leans against the counter;
“The first time we sat together was the day you made that gofundme. I was listening to his podcast during lunch and he probably saw how sad I was and just walked up to my table, sat down THEN asked if he could sit there. I didn’t want him to know I was listening to Hackenslash so I said I was watching The Vampire Diaries.” he says, “he wanted me on his podcast to talk about bullying and all I did was yell at him and storm off? For wanting to help. Even then he defended Junior when I called him a bully. Which he is, or was I guess..I don’t really know anymore.”
The blonde bumps his shoulder with hers
“We’re gonna get him back, Jake.”
“We do that and what? I've still done nothing but let him down this past month Lexy. I've always wanted the courage to talk to him and now that I’m close to him all I do is take take take. The night of the fire he almost died too and the first thing he asked me about was how Junior was doing then he admitted he was glad I wasn’t at the party so I couldn’t get hurt. The day after Oliver's Halloween party he said he wished he could protect me. Even when he didn’t know what was going on with Chucky he was there making sure I was okay. The only person who asked or cared to be honest.”
After a brief silence he continues:
“Did you know he’d come out to his mom? And told her he liked me? I’d even asked him on a date then..” he trails off
“Then his mom died.”
“His mom died and I didn't even go to the fucking funeral. God Lexy if something happens to him, he wouldn’t know that I…that I love him because I haven't told him. He's probably terrified and feeling like he can’t hang on to the hope of us saving him because he thinks we don’t care about him.” the curly haired boy laments
“…We haven’t been the best of friends to him, have we?” Lexy finally states what they’ve been thinking.
Resolved to show Devon how cared for he is, Jake leaves his rucksack on the floor, puts in 987 Sherwood Lane into his map app and prepares to save the best thing in his life.
“Whoa, where are you going? The Uber isn't here yet,” Lexy tries to intercept him
“Alexandra, move. I’m not waiting a second more for that fucking Uber. I’ll walk there. Devon needs me NOW. Fuck the ride,” he says as he pushes past her and takes long purposeful strides to the front door when his and Lexy’s phones both ping.
The two share a look and with a furrowed thick dark brow, Jake turns back to look at his phone.
It's a picture.
a picture of Devon.
It's a picture of Devon and he’s tied up with duct tape over his mouth and his forehead is bleeding.
his Devon.
“I’m going to fucking tear that doll apart piece.by.fucking.piece for laying a plastic hand on him.” Jake growls, his anxiety replaced by fury.
Jake Wheeler is a man on a mission and that mission is to save Devon Evans no matter what, kill the fucking chucky doll and do whatever he can to make up for taking him for granted.
‘I’m coming, Dev. please, just hold on for me,’ he pleads, hoping Devon will somehow hear the promise and believe in that Jake cares so much to the point where he’d go into a psychotic murderous doll’s home by himself just to rescue and prove he would do anything for him.

Han Juwon and Lee Dongsik: In search of the lost. Part 2 (the final )
(Spoilers, a lot)
Already at the first meeting, Dongsik and Juwon have reasons to look at each other with particular interest.
Juwon's interest is obvious - Dongsik is a suspect, for Dongsik he came to Manyang . What might not be so obvious why Juwon is so obsessed with suspicion? In part, there is logic in this. The fact that Donsik was already the prime suspect, then Lee Gumhwa's message and disappearance - all the threads seem to lead to Donsik. But it is also a manifestation of those very feelings, displaced from consciousness. The idea of a family killer who committed a crime and walked away unpunished is so thrilling for Juvon because it is essentially what happened in his own family. His father destroyed his mother and went unpunished, with a reputation for being a respectable person. And somewhere deep down, it burns Juwon and prompts him to cling to a similar case.
Dongsik sees Juwon for the first time, but he also has reasons for a special attitude. He learns that Juwon is the son of Нan Gihwan. The same person who led his case and closed it, never reaching the truth. That did not stop Han Gihwan from making a brilliant career. Probably, Han Gihwan to some extent personified the law for Dongsik - which he once hoped for and in which he became disappointed.
(Juwon has a photo of young Lee Dongsik on the wall. And Dongsik has a newspaper clipping on the wall with a photograph of Khan Gihwan.)
But mutual prejudice is not the only reason for hard feelings. What they see and understand in each other is perhaps even more annoying. Because both embody a dream for each other, which was once very important, but which each has already managed to devalue. And they embody it in such a crumpled, painfully disappointing form.
For Dongsik, this is a dream about law, about justice, and maybe even more globally - about some kind of properly and harmoniously arranged world. A dream that he himself betrayed at some point, deciding that the law is powerless here. And then Juwon appears - like an angel sent from above. But the angel is somehow flawed, arrogant, with an unethical act on his conscience, and he address his stubbornness to the wrong direction.
(Thanks to amazing Reel for the idea of Juwon personifies the law for Dongsik)
For Juwon, it's the dream of a warm touch, a safe and joyful relationship. The dream of a free and vibrant life. A dream that he himself gave up, because he decided that he had no right to it, and the price could be too high. But as a child, Juvon probably dreamed more than once about someone like Donsick, about a caring, loving person - as opposed to his father, and who knows how to enjoy life - as opposed to his mother. And here is such a person in front of him - but he is a suspect in murder, he laughs with a devilish laugh, and in his eyes mortal fatigue has almost supplanted his natural love of life.
Seeing a repressed part of yourself in another is both exciting and disturbing. "I don't like psychos," says Juwon, whose mother ended her days in a mental institution and who suffers from panic attacks. A curious off-screen moment. In a scene from Juvon's flashback, his father says "now our life will be perfect." As if he has big plans for his son. This does not fit in a little with the fact that he soon sends Juvon to England, takes him out of his influence. We're going into the realm of guesswork. But it seems to me that this panic attack was far from the first, and, perhaps, the "ideal" life did not work out due to the difficult psychological state of the boy. For twenty years, Juvon has been able to seal this aching, feeling, vulnerable part of himself. But as soon as he met Dongsik, all this artificially built internal order begins to crumble.
“You sent her to her death,” Dongsik says to Juwon, despite the fact that he himself feels responsible for the death of his partner. Dongsik, who forgave Nam Sanba the severe beatings, who never pressed on Jung Jae, even though he understood that he had his own secret. Dongsik, so selfless with others, suddenly so mercilessly provoking with Han Juwon. Because he's a stranger? Or because there is something painfully close in this loneliness and in this temptation to justify dubious means with a high end, to put oneself above the law? I think both. The mixture of alien and familiar in another person inevitably evokes complex emotions.
Interestingly, one of the first dialogues between the protagonists concerns the topic of self-interest in relationships. Juwon says he has no friends because everyone wants something from him. And Dongsik, not without irony, remarks: "I wonder if they all need the same thing from you?"
What is the difference between using and unselfish attachment? Almost any relationship begins with the fact that we are attracted by something valuable to ourselves in another. The question is whether we will see an integral personality behind this particular need.
1. Using
Dongsik and Juwon's relationship also begins with using - mutual. Dongsik uses Juwon deliberately as a weapon in his fight. Uses Juwon's obsession (and connections) to spin the case, gain attention, and ultimately lure the monster out of his hole. And Juwon goes even further than Dongsik expected, causing him at times to express an expression of delighted surprise.
Juvon unknowingly uses Dongsik as a figure to act out his suppressed feelings. Dark cloudy anxiety in front of his father. Pain for the mother and anger at her. And Dongsik can withstand these feelings. He responds with a sting on a sting, a bite on a bite, but does not repulse, does not ignore, does not break the connection.
2. Support
So both pass the first test of strength, becoming for each other not just a tool, but a support. This feeling of support is manifested even in gestures. Juvon, in a situation of confusion, literally clings to Dongsik, as if with aggression and hope at the same time.
And Dongsik at the sight of Juwon immediately takes on a more relaxed look, exhales, leans against the wall, like a man who has finally returned home and can drop his armor.
When you have found support, you can push off and move on. And both heroes get off the dead point and begin the path to healing.
3. Healing
Typically, trauma therapy is about reliving a traumatic experience with a different outcome. And this is what the main characters give each other - they lead to a frightening line, but do not let each other fall over the edge.
Juwon and Dongsik's traumatic scripts fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Therefore, living each their own path, they give each other a closure.
Juwon refused to have connections with people, tried to forget everything connected with his mother. Dongsik - entangled in relationships, like a tree with ivy, lives in a house that has actually turned into a crypt. In a city where many know something about his sister's case, but everyone is silent. Juvon's mom's fingers that eluded him forever. And the fingers of Dongsik's sister, which remained with him, as if holding him in this state of half-life. One cannot take another's hand. The other cannot push away the hands that gripped him. Two extremes of one disaster.
Juwon, with his harsh, sometimes brutal, directness helps Donsik find Yuyeon's body and finally let go of this ghostly bond. Nudges into agonizing conversation with Jeonjae. And ultimately, it gives Dongsik the opportunity to arrest his sister's killer. But closure for Dongsik is not only the closure of his sister's case. This is a partner and already dear person to Dongsik, whom he was able to "let go", and he returned, did not deceive the trust and did not die. This is an arrogant "angel" who descended from his pedestal to share his pain and take his burden. This is the representative of the law who can really be trusted. And this trust returns Dongsik himself to the framework of the law, returns to him that human appearance that he was ready to lose.
The closure for Juwon is the complete and final realization of what happened to his mother. An opportunity to mourn her death and condemn his father. The opportunity to feel strong, able to save another person from injustice and madness. The opportunity to be weak, vulnerable - and receive the warmth and care of an older.
Affection and compassion for Dongsik was reason enough for Juwon to face his fears. To descend into the "dirty" real world and into its own inner hell. As the son of a suicide, similar to his mother, he could also avoid emotions for this reason - fearing that a hereditary trait might one day lead him to a dead end. And already from the first episode, we see in him this suicidal tendency to go ahead towards danger. This is something that Dongsik immediately notices - that Juwon is not trying to dodge the gusts of wind. Throwing himself from a height into the " hell" is the ending that Juwon was waiting for, to which he unconsciously walked. But unlike his mom's situation, there was a man for Juvon who was ready to catch him, to insure him in the fall.
4. Closeness
And with all these processes, a deeper connection is formed between the heroes, going beyond specific needs. Juvon's family discredited the very idea of a relationship for him as much as possible. Manyang shows him the other side of human connections. Even the photo that Juwon showed Lee Geumhwa looks like a dream - warm, joyful, with some kind of magical light, a little blurry - like an image from a dream.
Perhaps Juwon unknowingly was so eager to go to Manyang for this image as well. Here he learns how to connect with people, apologize, ask for help and accept support. But if Juwon retains some distance with the other Manyangs, with Dongsik the distance disappears almost immediately. Juvon does not seem to feel the boundaries between them, but Dongsik's personal boundaries feel like his own. And he grows up as a formidable obstacle in front of everyone who tries to break them.
This feeling of a common space for two, an invisible unbreakable thread is also manifested in the way they unconsciously copy each other's gestures. How they leave each other “messages on camera”, knowing exactly what the other will find, see and understand. Gradually, they develop their own language of communication, intended only for two. Sometimes it is very similar to flirting.
Sometimes it looks like a fight. But every such small dialogue is like a password, a connection check. Even in the final scene, Dongsik's toilet joke and Juwon's grumpy response are not only a way to hide the embarrassment, but the same password. Another reminder that they are different, but they are together. Although often they don't even need words - they can arrange an entire conversation with their eyes alone. It is enough to see how they look at each other to appreciate the importance of this relationship for both.
This is how Juwon looks at Dongsik:
And this is how Dongsik looks at Juwon:
From people who need each other for specific purposes, they become people who need each other just like that, simply because together they feel truly alive. This gradual awakening to life under the interested, compassionate, admiring gaze of another person is masterfully embodied by the actors. And this is possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in a drama. Dongsik and Juwon use each other to fill in the missing pieces, but they don't become the same. They become themselves. Isn't this a true manifestation of love - when someone else needs you exactly as you are in your natural essence. Dissimilar and dear at the same time.
(P. S. Thanks to my talented friends - Jan-fm, Nina and Arina. These articles came from our joint brainstorming sessions.)
