People need to talk about how well Frankenstein handles the concepts of cause and effect and familial abuse. There is not one good parent in Frankenstein, and that directly ties into so much. If Caroline hadn’t groomed Elizabeth and manipulated Victor and Elizabeth into feeling like they needed to marry eachother, Elizabeth would’ve been alive. If Alphonse hadn’t dismissed victors interests as “sad trash” the creature would’ve never existed. If Henry’s dad didn’t judge his passions to the point Henry felt pressured to stay at home for two years, the creature, say it with me
WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN CREATED.
If Justine’s mother gave even one fuck about her Justine wouldn’t have ran off to live with the frankensteins, and say it with me
WOULDN’T HAVE DIED!!!
And all of this is complimented by Victor grasping at any sense of control and making his creature, his son, only to run away in disgust. The story is atleast a little bit about how parenting affects a child, and I will stand by that Til I die. If literally any of the people in this story were good parents, so many deaths and plot points could’ve been avoided.

Honestly I've never had a bigger want to become a movie director than when thinking about making a Frankenstein adaptation THAT ACTUALLY KEEPS EVERYTHING INTERESTING ABOUT THE SOURCE MATERIAL
I daydream about this
I NEED an adaptation that actually goes into it. Show the fucked up family stuff while Victor narrates it aa idyllic, SHOW VICTOR BEING 19-21 WHILE MAKING THE CREATURE, show the Creature learning to speak from the Delaceys, show his worldview being entirely shaped by paradise lost and the ONE romantic relationship he saw giving him the bride idea, show Victor being ill, disabled, traumatized, go into his internal conflict, show the fucked up nature of Justine's trial, how Victor becomes more aware that he'll be perceived as crazy if he speaks up every second of it, how the law is corrupt and sentences by a judge can have been coerced and say nothing about the moral standing of the victim, especially when also bringing religion into the mix, how the law continues to be fucked when Victor is jailed after Henry's death, a shell of a man he used to be, and taken out by his father because he has influence, show Victor's bond with Henry, with Elizabeth, explore the messy and disturbing relationship of Victor and Elizabeth where they always saw each other as siblings but were also promised to one another by Caroline ever since Elizabeth arrived, how Caroline manipulated Elizabeth to basically relive her own trauma, how her dying wish left them tied into something that neither of them expresses real want for in the whole book
THERE'S SO FUCKING MUCH

Crazy how so many feminist readings of Frankenstein are consistently so heteronormative and lowkey sexist in it of themselves.
Like, the whole “the women of Frankenstein are boring and docile” argument, while has its amount of merit, feels more like an excuse to just further ignore and over-generalize the women in the book instead of actually trying to analyze them. Elizabeth especially is the main victim of this reading because she’s always read as the subservient woman that doesn’t have much say in the book, yet one of her most defining instances is her standing up for Justine in front of a court of law when others were too frightened to.
She literally dropped “They call this retribution. Hateful name! When that word is pronounced, I know greater and more horrid punishments are going to be inflicted than the gloomiest tyrant has ever invented to satiate his utmost revenge” and people still want to dumb her down and define her solely through her “reliance on men”.
And the whole “Victor usurped the biological/feminine power of women to give birth.” I’m sorry, but I kinda really hate this reading so bad. Not only does it read as incredibly transphobic, but at the same time it further pushes the idea that the only power/purpose a woman has is to give birth. How can you condemn Elizabeth for being “docile and subservient to men” but then turn around and say she and women are powerful through their ability to give birth and be mothers/wives? Does that imply Victor should’ve just married and impregnated his sister/cousin? Would that have “preserved Elizabeth’s power”? because it seems to me her marriage to Victor destroyed whatever power or autonomy she had. And what about how Mary Shelley herself was struggling with pregnancies and childbirth before and while writing Frankenstein? Was she a weaker woman for not being able to give birth properly?
The women in Frankenstein are obviously less active than the men, and that is a point to be made, but at the same time, we do such a disservice by making broad and disconnected assertions without actually giving the women the time of day for what they do do.
Can we talk about how Elizabeth was groomed into the role of a mother/bride since she was four? How she had dreams and wanted to “people [the world] with imaginations of her own”? How she lost hope in those dreams following the wrongful execution of her “more than sister”? What about how Caroline Frankenstein haunts the whole narrative; how her death influences Victor’s obsession with the dead and how she forced her children into an incestuous, (mutually) non-consensual relationship? Why is it so common that people will read Justine’s existence as solely a character to bring Victor guilt rather than looking deeper into how her conviction and execution affected Elizabeth’s perception of the world? Why is there so much focus placed on what these women aren’t instead of what they are?
Ok sorry for the messy ranting. Just had a burst of energy. As usual, I’m sorry for coming off as hostile and kinda confusing but at the same time I’m just a bit frustrated with the common interpretations of Frankenstein and wanted to yap. Feel free to add more ideas, I like talking abt this kinda stuff.

Interesting change to me in how the Creature planted the necklace on Justine. In the first version, she was walking by and he snuck up on her and slid it into her pocket. And I know he is crazy stealthy when he wants to be, but she really didn’t notice the 8-foot-person RIGHT behind her? It does make for a cool visual in my mind, though. I picture her perceiving something and turning, but he’s already gone, somehow; and after a pause, she continues on.
It’s cool, but the revised version probably makes a more realistic sense (kinda)—he came across her sleeping and put it in her pocket then. That would make it much more easier to explain her not noticing him. But before doing so, he had a moment of fantasy, wishing she were in love with him. Then was brought back to reality when she nearly woke up, imagining her more likely reaction upon waking, and he changed his tune, and planted the necklace.
I found the delivery of his spoken line a little weird, because I wasn’t sure why he would’ve risked her waking up and seeing him, so I just figure he was having a moment of fantasy. Because the line’s a little weird for someone currently feeling so bitter towards everybody:
“Awake, fairest, thy lover is near—he who would give his life but to obtain one look of affection from thine eyes; my beloved, awake!”
And when she actually stirs a bit, he thinks it more likely she’ll freak out and condemn him with a look, like every single other person who’s seen him. So to hell with her too.

Quick question for the Frankenstein fandom
do any of us actually hate the Creature in any way? (I say that as a Creature lover) but I was wondering and my brother (@purbletheautism) insisted I made a poll, y’know, conduct field research
