Hi. There's a lot of controversy regarding Jungkook going to Quatar for the world cup. I guess he will perform or whatever. But with the controversies about the world cup ( homophobia, immigrant workers mistreatement), what r ur thoughts on jk performing there?

Oh boy, if this isn't a sensitive subject. I closely watched how the fandom reacted at the news and of course the opinion is divided. Some are directly criticizing him, along with the actual event, while others are saying they still support him, not the World Cup and Qatar. Jungkook is seen as either an opportunist who only cares about status and money, with a complete disregard for human rights, ironically given his participation as a group member in UN projects. Other see his gesture as brave and believe it sends some sort of subtle message (this one includes a lot of assumptions as well).

Given the nature of the situation, I think that criticism definitely has its place, including about Jungkook's part in it. Not everything needs to be labelled as selective activism. Some may be simple hypocrisy as other public figures do not become targets of it, but some of it is a legitimate questioning of his decision.

As you can see, there are a lot of nuances and as usual, it turned into taking a side, which I personally don't think it's necessary. I understand that some fans are defending him because it's the only way they can justify still being a stan. Because otherwise, they subconsciouly believe that admitting and recognizing all the problems would put Jungkook in a bad light as well. The others openly accusing him may be right to some degree, but in certain occasions, the arguments come across as racist as well and a complete ignorance about that particular place as well.

I think that it's perfectly possible to still like an artist, while not agreeing with what he does. And that may be something which not everyone agrees with. For a lot of people, they want to like (and identify) with morally upstanding citizens, as we tend to scrutinize public figures more and more and not turn a blind eye like it used to be done in the past. Others may have a different moral compass. And this may be a hard pill to swallow, but there are also people perfectly aware that someone is participating in something which can be morally wrong, and still make the conscious decision to not have a problem with that. Because we're not all "good" people who only ever do and think what is considered to be right in a society. And we never will be. The average person's morals are situated in a grey area and usually we lean towards a side or another.

Do we label Jungkook as a bad person for doing it? Do we completely erase everything he ever said and did before? Do we defend him, is that even necessary? Do we accept that we don't know him personally and that we also have the right to put into question the actions of a public person?

These are questions that each of us should answer and make our own opinion. And the outcome will be in line with our own moral compass, which usually cannot be unanimous.
