My photos that Iāve chosen to go on my 2021 wildlife calendar: Cover & January-September with some thoughts on each of the photosĀ
Just over a month ago I tweeted the lineup of photos that Iāve taken that Iāve chosen to go on my 2021 wildlife photos calendar. To those who donāt know I make two calendars for personal use and as my Christmas present each year, one from my wildlife photos another from my landscape and other outdoor photos. I make the calendars in August or September each year and leave it up to my family after that to order the calendars via the website we use, wrap up at the appropriate time etc. Its evolved that I finalise and reveal on social media the lineups for these between late April and June. There are many reasons for this and a key one being the hot, busy and long evenings/weekend mornings of summer are not a great time to be sat at my laptop choosing photos and looking at quality comparisons between photos Iāve taken. I wouldnāt want to be in a position of choosing them in September as Iād just worry if certain things come up I may not be able to get the calendars chosen in the right time frame for them to be made in time for Christmas. With other things happening in the build up to Christmas for me and the time between September and Christmas flying by every year it seems it just makes sense to get the calendar line up choosing done and dusted in the spring for them to be made in late summer/autumn and ordered in time to be my Christmas presents.Ā
That does then mean the photos I have chose from are any I took within about a year from spring to spring. So for example, the photos in contention for my 2021 calendars were ones I took from spring 2019 until spring 2020. I now operate a system of variety quotas of what types of pictures I want within the 13 pictures (cover and one for each month) of mine making the calendar. As part of that, using the example of my 2021 calendars, five photos on each calendar must have been taken in 2019 and five photos on each calendar must have been taken in 2020. This just makes it fair to ensure both yearsā worth of photos that have fed into my selection process are represented on the calendar. So below are my Cover and January-September photos on this calendar, ordered in appearance in this photoset by their month. Below I shall say what and where each one is, when it was taken and a little bit about why I was happy to take it/its journey onto my calendar.Ā
I must confess I wrote this up the day after I finalised this calendar line up in late April (the choosing was sped up a little by the lockdown this year and the time I had on my hands because of that and with the amount of photos I take really increasing in 2019 and 2020 to previous years I had much higher amounts of photos to choose from so felt I had to really progress my choosing a lot in April to get it all done in time)Ā
Cover: One of my favourite birds the Guillemot on Staple Island, Farne Islands, Northumberland, taken June 2019Ā
Another reason I chose the calendar final lineups about now is because often in June we have our main holiday for the year which very often involves many photos with lots of wildlife up close and top views so for both calendars I donāt want them to be swamped by one holidayās photos to give lots of photos at local and further afield places a chance. That can easily happen if when doing the final choosing I am still within the buzz of the many holiday photos not long after they were taken, so photos from a holiday in June 2019 say having to wait until the year after next for their chances to be on a calendar allows me to refine the choices and identify what was my strongest photos from that trip. That being said, six photos from my Northumberland holiday for the Farne Islands last June have made this calendar. This is because it was one of my greatest photography weeks ever, and this picture of a Guillemot sums up the sorts of once in a blue moon opportunities I had to take these types of close up and intimate photos with my very favourite creatures. I like how this one looks good in the sun bringing out the Guillemotās brilliant colours. Its not only a Guillemot but a bridled one too with the ring and mark around the eye not something too common on coasts down here but there were many in Northumberlandās colonies so I was proud I could capture this in this way. When deciding my cover if felt natural to put a Northumberland one there with many of them on the calendar only one could actually represent the month they were taken in June and this felt like a natural photo to be the face of this calendar for me.Ā
January: Bewickās Swan, WWT Slimbridge in Gloucestershire taken in January 2020Ā
The Slimbridge trip away to start this year also features multiple times on this calendar, this Bewickās Swan photo taken on my birthday was one I was so proud of and brings a great closeup but not really needing sun to make it memorable vibe.Ā
February: Woodpigeon, WWT Slimbridge, taken January 2020
Features of the calendars Iāve made for wildlife the last couple of years have been handing places to photos of species that have never featured on my calendars before; Fox, Arctic Tern and Green Hairstreak among this yearās examples. But so also is Woodpigeon, a species Iāve photographed so much over the last couple of years and this one was such a memorable one for me I really like the colours especially the purple chest feathers and I think this one will look good printed. Common species can make what I feel are strong photos too.
March: Robin, Blashford Lakes, Hampshire, taken in March 2020Ā
An obvious choice for the calendar. At the time of writing this its without doubt the most pleasing photo in my view that Iāve taken with my new camera so far that I got in January. Iāve rarely taken photos like this for detail and it captures such an intimate moment with an iconic species. It was literally the first photo on the calendar that was taken in 2020 when the time was right to start to selections I knew it was going on.Ā
April: Green Hairstreak, Magdalen Hill, Hampshire, taken April 2020Ā
This photo is a week old as I write this and its taken me by storm to reach this calendar within seven days of being taken. Yes the timing was good with me into the very final stages of getting this lineup at this point, but I had to be happy enough with it for it to make it. Its one of the best butterfly pictures Iāve ever taken I think, like the Robin without doubt right now the best butterfly photo or photo all together that Iāve taken with my new macro lens that I also got in January. It sums up perfectly the detail I can get with this macro lens and type of picture I want to take with it. It displaced provisionally qualified photos to get on this calendar which shows how much I love it.Ā
May: Another of my favourite birds the Razorbill on the Farne Islands, Northumberland taken June 2019Ā
This was a dark horse as one of the unsung photos of my big Northumberland seabird trip. However in the selecting at all the stages I just appreciated how much I liked this photo and it just seemed to look stronger and stronger to me every time I looked at it, a personal choice I was glad I could make.Ā
June: Arctic Tern, Inner Farne, Farne Islands, Northumberland from June 2019Ā
Compared to trips to Skomer Island and Bempton Cliffs which have had many photos get onto the calendars they fed into in previous years the Farnes had something different, the terns. These Arctic Terns the standout bit of the trip walking through the colony and having them divebomb you so I just really wanted to include an Arctic Tern photo from that trip in this calendar if I could as I knew many of the photos from that time away would be candidates. This one got there on quality merit regardless of its species I feel. But it was another dark horse, at the time of the trip I did not pick this out as my favourite Arctic Tern photo of the trip of the lovely extensive set I took of this a new bird for me at the time on two visits to Inner Farne where the colony is. It soon became apparent it was though as I chose it for myĀ ā4 of my favourite ....ā (pictures in categories tweets) on my Twitter Dans_Pictures in 2019 in December in a special unqique feature of the year category about the seabirds on that trip and I still loved it enough to carry it onto the calendar for next year.Ā
July: Brown Argus butterfly, Lakeside Country Park, Hampshire, taken in July 2019
One of my quotas as a big chunk of my wildlife photography is I must have at least one butterfly on the calendar. I am proud this one remained, despite very nearly missing out once the Green Hairstreak was on the scene (another early 2020 butterfly picture had to make way in the end), to represent my butterfly pictures of 2019 which were taken during my greatest ever butterfly year with more species seen than I ever did etc. This is another new species for one of my calendars this lovely butterfly I am getting to really like the last few years. It was one of a batch of my very favourite butterfly pictures taken last year in terms of quality and symbolised one of my best butterfly moments of 2019 as I saw it during a boomingĀ āBig Butterfly Countā survey for Butterfly Conservation one Saturday morning. This photo holds so many memories of that summer day which is perfect for a calendar for me I feel. The lockdown has led to many of my strongest photos being so locally to me taken and this is an example of one I took locally under normal circumstances last year.
August: Another of my favourite birds the Kittiwake at Seahouses, Northumberland from June 2019Ā
This is a second calendar of mine in a row for wildlife to include a Kittiwake after a Bempton Cliffs one taken in 2018 made my 2020 wildlife calendar (It got June as its month so today I turned over the calendar to see it in fact!). But this Kittiwake picture had to be on my calendar for one simple reason beyond everything else, of the photos I took between spring 2019 and spring 2020 this was what I felt was the best one of a bird in flight out of a strong field I must say. I like flying bird photos so much I say at least one must appear on the calendar. So sometimes putting aside species that appeared here and there on past calendars of mine it really is that simple to pick pictures. This photo shows an integral part of the journey I am on really getting to love and know this favourite bird of mine more and more over the last few years. It couldnāt be on the month for the one it was taken as the Arctic Tern took June but I just had to have it for August with that blue sky even if you might not see one that month as its so summery.Ā
September: Fox at Titchfield Haven in Hampshire taken in September 2019Ā
Another easy choice for the calendar. This was one of my most magical moments in wildlife watching and photography and the photo was that photo of the species that I might never match again. I just longed for a photo and a chance to be so close to this species I scrambled to get the right lens on to get the photo when the moment came my first Fox of 2019 in fact with the Fox looking right in at us in the hide such an intimate moment with a wonderful species and I managed it, on a variable day for weather that patch of early autumnal sun just came out at the right moment to set this picture up well. With this one I admit there are shortcomings maybe bits of the photo that could have been done better but its one of those I get that I overlook them and I just get them on the lineup this was among the first few photos I chose to go on because I want to see it printed.Ā
In half an hour I do a post with the photos on this calendar for October, November and December and introduce five reserve photos that didnāt quite make the calendar in case I need them.Ā

Whatās In a Book? Part 28
On The Bonus Day Of Fun I present... a book review! Itās hard to believe that my last review was also done last year! This year Iāve really set my sights on buying a few books that my collection dearly needs, so this will (hopefully) not be the last review youāll see in 2019!
Bookās cover courtesy of Amazon Japan. äŗ¬é½äŗč±č” - ē„åē²éØ - å®®å·ēŗ - å
ęēŗ - äøäøč» - ē„åę± - The Kyoto Gokagai by Hiroshi Mizobuchi ęŗēøć²ćć (ISBN 978-4-8381-0432-1) Date of Publication: 2010 Language: Dual Japanese and English (Mostly) Format: Softcover Availability: Still being printed and easily found online Price: $15 Errors: 1 As can be guessed by the look of the cover, this book came between Kyoto Hanamachi and The Kagai In Kyoto. Already with the title and introduction we can see how the author is now using the more correct term ofĀ āKagaiā instead ofĀ āHanamachiā as that is the term used in Kyoto. Itās also nice to note that if you look at the English page with the publishing information youāll notice some Japanese text and numbers at the bottom. These are actually the statistics for how many maiko and geiko were active at the time! Iām not too sure why they were kinda hidden there, but it seems like a fun easter egg for people who are paying attention. As of September 2009 there were 194 geiko and 89 maiko, which isnāt too far off of the current count of 188 geiko and 74 maiko. One of my only qualms is how the book begins. Even though pretty much every event has the information written in Japanese and English the entire index is written in Japanese only. This would be remedied in his next book, but it seems like a bit of an oversight that should have been corrected for this book. Overall, the book is split into three separate parts: The Calendar of Events, The Miscellaneous Maiko and Geiko Information, and The Gokagai Directory. Part 1: The Calendar of Events Weāve seen this before numerous times, so Iāll quickly list off each event covered, along with a small blurb. Each event name is as it appears in the book: Shinen New Yearās Day - Details the kadomatsu ornaments outside of businesses. ShigyÅshiki Year Opening Ceremony - Ceremony to officially open the kagai. Thereās a few pages of photographs showing the ceremonies in each kagai along with descriptions, but theyāre only written in Japanese. Hatsuyori New Year Greeting - Gion Kobuās special rounds. Setsubun Seasonal Division Ritual and Obake Disguise - Ceremonial dances performed at various shrines along with bean tossing and dressing up in costumes for ozashiki. Baika(sai) Plum Blossom Festival - Outdoor tea ceremony at Kitano Tenmangu hosted by the maiko and geiko of Kamishichiken.Ā Ā Oishi Ki Memorial Service - Special memorial service for Kuranosuke Oishi, leader of the 47 Ronin, held at the Ichiriki. Miyako Odori Dance Performance - Gion Kobuās annual spring dances. KyÅ Odori Dance Performance - Miyagawa Choās annual spring dances. Kitano Odori Dance Performance - Kamishichikenās annual spring dances. Itās placed after the other two as the Kitano Odori used to take place at the end of April; it now takes place during the last week of March and the first week of April. Takasegawa Canal Sakura Cherry Blossom Festival - Held by the maiko and geiko of Pontocho each April. Dance Dedication For Annual Festival of Heian Shrine - The spectacular dedication dances of the four kagai associated with the Heian Shrine. You may know it better from its Japanese name as the Heian Jingu Reitaisai Hono BÅ«yo Matsuri.Ā Kamogawa Dance Performance - Pontochoās annual spring dances. End of Miyako Odori Rituals - The Gion Kobu maiko and geiko praying together with their Inoue teachers for a successful Miyako Odori. It used to take place each year on May 1st as the odori ran from April 1st to the 30th at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, but since itās been moved to various locations for the past three years while the kaburenjo is undergoing retrofitting the dates have changed. In 2019 it will take place on April 28th. Kanki Inari Shrine Festival - Gion Higashiās big event for the spring where they celebrate the ongoing success of the shrine with an outdoor tea ceremony. Fumi No Kai Singing Performance - A nagauta festival hosted by Miyagawa Cho in the early summer. Kyoto Gokagai Traditional Dance Performance Miyako No Nigiwai - The annual combined dances of the five kagai on the third weekend in June. Thereās seven pages of images dedicated to this event! Beer Garden - Various outdoor beer gardens hosted by Kamishichiken. Since theirs has proven to be very popular Miyagawa Cho and Pontocho have also followed suit in recent years. Osendo Thousand Time Shrine Visit - The gathering of all maiko and geiko of Gion Kobu together with their dance teachers to pray for success on July 7th in specially made yukata. Itās better known by itās other name of Miyabi Kai Osendo. Sannin No Kai Performance - An event held only a few times from what I can find. It featured the best dancers from Gion Kobu, Pontocho, and Miyagawa Cho and ended with a dance by Yachiyo Inoue and Mitsugoro Bando, the heads of the Inoue and Onoe Schools. Gion Festival - The massive festival that takes place for the majority of July and is one of Japanās Big Three festivals. It also details the Hanagasa Junko and the Dedication Dances by the maiko and geiko who are selected to perform each year. Yukata Kai Summer Music Learning - Annual event held by Miyagawa Cho in which the performers all wear yukata. Since this book was written Kamishichiken and Gion Higashi have also began their own Yukata Kai. Hassaku Summer Greeting - The annual rounds of thanks on August 1st each year. Autumn Dance Performance Practice - Beginning in September the gokagai each get ready to host their annual fall dances. Zuiki Festival - Annual event in Kamishichiken that celebrates the harvest. OnshÅ«-kai Dance Performance - Gion Kobuās annual autumn dances. Mizue-kai Dance Performance - Miyagawa Choās annual autumn dances. Kotobuki-kai Dance Performance - Kamishichikenās annual autumn dances. Suimei-kai Dance Performance - Pontochoās annual autumn dances.Ā Jidai Festival - The annual procession that celebrates over 1,200 years of Kyoto history with participants dressed in period accurate clothing. Fire Drill - Annual demonstration of how to put out fires by maiko of each district. Gion Odori Dance Performance - Gion Higashiās annual dances. Chion-In Gion Odori Presentation Dance (ē„ę©é¢ē„åćć©ćå„ē“č) - This part was in Japanese only, and it appears as though after the Gion Odori the maiko and geiko of Gion Higashi did a dedication dance at Chion-In following the Gion Odori. I am not aware of this event still existing though. Ohitaki Fire Festival - Annual event held at all shrines where wishes written on paper are ceremoniously burned. Kanikakuni Festival - Annual dedication of flowers at Osamu Yoshiiās monument that features his famous poem Kanikakuni. Ichi-go Ichi-e (Treasure Every Encounter For It Will Never Recur) Autumn Tea Ceremony Party - An event held by the maiko and geiko of Gion Kobu in which they perform a tea ceremony and dances. I do not recall this event happening within the past few years.Ā Gion Kouta Festival - Two maiko from each kagai read the lyrics of the famous Gion Kouta in front of a monument in Maruyama Park. Each kagai takes part on a rotating basis. Kaomise Soken Kabuki Watching - Annual viewing of the first kabuki performances of the year by each kagai. Kitano Kencha Tea Dedication Festival - Annual tea ceremony hosted by the maiko and geiko of Kamishichiken that celebrates the tea festival held by Toyotomi Hideyoshi that lead to the establishment of Kamishichiken. Kotohajime New Year Preparation - Visit to the head of each dance school where maiko and geiko give a gift of pounded rice cakes and receive a new fan to use in the new year. Okotosan Year End Greeting and Okera-bi Fire Offering - The annual year end greetings where maiko and geiko receive fukudama and the shrine fire ceremony where maiko and geiko light a special rope that is then used to light the oven for the new year. Part 2: The Miscellaneous Maiko and Geiko Information Ā A short section that features an interview with a maiko (Japanese only), the misedashi process (Japanese only), a section about various maiko accessories, such as hair ornaments, hanameishi, dance fans, pocchiri, and kago (Japanese only), maiko hairstyles (Japanese only), the erikae process (Japanese only), theĀ hiki iwai retirement process (Japanese Only), and ozashiki asobi practices (Japanese only). This is then followed by a two page blurb about Shimabara, which is written in Japanese and English. Part 3: The Gokagai Directory This may seem a bit odd to English speakers, but listed within are the history of each kagai, maps of the kagai, where all ochaya are located on said maps, and even the phone numbers for each ochaya. Obviously you canāt just call up these places as you need an introduction, but itās not uncommon for Japanese publications to print phone numbers for businesses. This is still practiced with odori program books too! Like his other books, this section is entirely in Japanese. Like all of his other books, the real charm here is from his absolutely GORGEOUS images. This book is loaded with images for each event and even some random outdoor images that mark the changing of each season. Itās a feast for the eyes that makes this book worth the (very affordable) price alone! During the entire book I found one error, and itās an English issue. In the introduction the English part states that a shikomi period can also be known as a minarai period, but itās correct on the Japanese side of the text in that it states that the minarai period comes after the shikomi period. For those of you who are looking for an affordable book that details the events of the gokagai along with stunning images then this is the book for you! Rating: āŖāŖāŖāŖāŖ (out of 5)

Arplis - News: My 22 Goals for 2019 Week 49 of 52
My 22 Goals for 2019
Goal #1 Spend More Time Doing What I Love
Red alert people, RED ALERT. It was 6 degrees this morning when I woke up. SIX!!! That.Is.Chilly. The Girl and I were going to walk Lucy on the beach this morning but those plans have been scraped. Gaaaa. I think if its 6 degrees outside, all bets are off and you can most certainly declare it a pajama day. Whos with me on this?
Goal #2 Garden, Garden, Garden
Garden are done for the year. Yipee!
Goal #3 Plant an Orchard {Calling it Quits on this one.}
Lemon baby #3 is on the way and we are patiently awaiting her arrival.
Goal #4 Gussy Up the Potting Shed Done!
I gussied up the potting shed at our old house, but I would like to add some sort of potting station to the backyard here somewhere, but Im not sure where I would put it yet.
I did come across this photo on Author Susan Branchs Instagram page though of a picture she tooth at Colonial Williamsburg. Isnt it cute? I think I need one of those.
Goal #5 Grow Enough Extra Vegetables, Eggs and Flowers to Earn $1500 at my little roadside vegetable stand.
It was totally my intention to grow a ton of fruits and vegetables to sell at the farm-stand when I made my list of goals for 2019 last winter, but then we moved. So, that whole goal was sort of a bust. I do miss it though.
Goal #6 Finish Every Single Unfinished Rug Hooking Project in My Pattern Bin + 10 Things from back Issues of Magazines/Books Ive Been Meaning to Make.
While I didnt add any new finished hooked rug pieces in my Etsy shop this past week, I did hook 4 totally new rugs {1 of which will become a kit and 2 will be offered as patterns} as well as hand dyed a bunch of wool {that I was able to get listed in my Etsy shop}.
I have decided to go back to my old schedule of only listing new hooked rugs items on the first Friday of every month for next year as it seems less stressful to me. It allows me more time to hook, rather than stopping every few days to take photo, write up description and then post a single piece online. Doing it all in one big swoop seems less chaotic to me.
73 rugs in my pattern bin {now down to 16} < SO CLOSE!
183 hooked flowers {finished 150, now down to 33}
10 things from back issues of magazines {finished 0}
Goal #7 Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns {with at least half of them being large ones} DONE!
So far this year Ive added 12 new rug hooking patterns and 14 beginner rug hooking kits to my Etsy shop. I just added Santa and Rudy 1892 yesterday and am hoping to squeeze one more kit in before the end of the year.

Goal #13 Try 52 New Recipes.
39 down, 13 recipes to go. We tried 2 new recipes this week. 1 was a dud and the other I will share on Tuesday. And its a good one!
Goal #14 Clean Up 52 Old Recipes on the Blog
9 down, 44 to go. Why did I make this goal? Note to self: Make fewer goals for next year.
Goal #15 Fill 100 Canning Jars 72 down, 28 to go.
I made a batch of Christmas Jam for gift giving PLUS I tried a new recipe {that was inspired by Mrs. HB} this past week and the HH and I loved it so much, that Ill be making another batch {or maybe 2} of it today {Ill share the recipe on Tuesday}.
So far this year Ive I canned:
9 Jars of..
6 jars Christmas Jam
7 jars Spiced Pomegranate Jelly
7 jars Peach Jam
7 jars of Strawberry Jam
15 jars of Carrot Cake Jam
15 jars of Spiced Pear Jam
4 jars of Almond Pears.
Goal #16 Finish Furnishing Our House
We finished the roman shades for the kitchen nook and kitchen window. I plan on taking a break from making roman shades for the next month so I can finish making kits for my Etsy shop and paint out the entire kitchen area as well as finish a couple of art projects for the walls.
Goal #17 52 Dates with the HH {44 down, 8 to go}
The HH and I went on 2 date days this past week and one of them was to the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village for their Shaker Christmas Fair and it was so overwhelming, we left after 5 minutes.
Overwhelming in the sense that although we could tell there was going to be a lot of people at the event by the distance we had to walk to the village, what we werent expecting was that once we walked in the doors of the trustees office {where the craft fair was being held}, it was SHOULDER to SHOULDER.
Like, being at a rock concert crowded. The HH didnt even make it 2 feet in before walking out and it took me nearly 5 minutes to get from the entrance and through 3 rooms and back out the door again without even being able to look or pick up anything it was so crowded. It was nuts. And totally not in the calm, welcoming Shaker spirit and all we wanted to do was leave. And so we did.
I do want to go back though at some point to visit the museum, but it will have to be an ordinary weekday with nothing on the event calendar, thats for sure.
Goal #18 Take One Adult Education Class Done {Ive taken 3!}
Block Printing Class with my neighbor.
