i say this every season of only murders, but like, just let charles and oliver get gay married. this was never going to happen because of a contingent of baby boomer viewers who are unaccustomed to thinking of steve martin and martin short in a homosexual context but i feel like it’s even less likely now that martin short is shacking up with meryl streep so i guess loretta is sticking around.

it’s like. i don’t even care that much except for the fact that i’m bothered by these characters being marked by all these queer signifiers and i’m picking up on them and following them to a logical conclusion that will never come to fruition because of their age? genre conventions? the celebrity personae of martin short and steve martin?

again, i only care because i am a viewer competently interpreting these characters based on blatant queer signifiers but my expectations are made to seem unreasonable because they contradict convention. (those old men are just friendly! their real life counterparts are heterosexual men! this is a show for baby boomers!) but like bitch i’m reading the signs and this is what they’re telling me

this has turned into such a ramble.

in a way this is similar to my grievances about hacks (a much better show) and the idea that the showrunners included that dream kiss without realizing that a large contingent of queer women would interpret it in a certain way despite the (flimsy) in universe explanation of it because they assume no one would find an intergenerational lesbian relationship plausible or compelling.

i am literally just picking up what is being put down! but end up lumped into this stigmatized queer fandom that’s framed as being out of touch with the actual material

and i am invoking the word stigma here specifically because of how queer women in fandom have been openly ridiculed by tv showrunners (see: supergirl and killing eve)
