James Woods and Debbie Harry in Videodrome (David Cronenberg, 1983)
Cast: James Woods, Debbie Harry, Sonja Smits, Peter Dvorsky, Leslie Carlson, Jack Creley, Lynne Gorman, Julie Khaner, Reiner Schwarz, David Bolt, Rena King. Screenplay: David Cronenberg. Cinematography: Mark Irwin. Art direction: Carol Spear. Film editing: Ronald Sanders. Music: Howard Shore.
The menacing technology in Videodrome -- cathode ray tube TV sets, video cassettes (Betamax!), broadcast television -- looks antique and even quaint 40 years later. We worry today about the internet, smart phones, social media. But the root fear remains the same: extreme self-absorption, alienation, anomie. In that respect, David Cronenberg's fable has dated not at all. Partly that's because as a specialist in "body horror," Cronenberg, with the significant help of makeup artist Rick Baker, is able to translate psychological, even spiritual concerns into physical ones. The grotesque invasions of the body in Videodrome are treated as invasions of the soul. If I have reservations about the movie, it's that it too quickly pins the blame on television instead of exploring the root causes of the hunger for violence and violent sex that the medium exploits. It's like deploring consumerism while ignoring capitalism's encouragement of it. But that's another film entirely, or rather a whole bunch of films.

Choices of the Heart - The Margaret Sanger Story (1995) [film]
Drama/historical
Tom McCamus plays a supporting role
This is a wonderful film chronicling the true story of Margaret Sanger, a pioneer for women’s reproductive rights. Margaret (Dana Delany) is a nurse who sees families plunged into worsening poverty and women dying as a direct result of their lack of access to birth control.
Tom McCamus plays Mr Schlesinger, who is part of the socialist movement and a supporter of Margaret’s campaign for change. I particularly like the impassioned speech he makes in his first scene in the film.
I have to say this is a particularly odd time to be watching this film. I cannot help but relate it to the horrifying way in which women’s rights are being stripped away in America right now. The sad truth is that women have never been equal. Women will not be truly equal until they are no longer afraid, cautious or constricted in ways that men are not. Like Margaret Sanger, we need to fight and never stop.

Some of my early Canadian actress crushes included Cynthia Dale, Sonja Smits, Julie Khaner, Sara Botsford, Catherine Disher, Megan Follows, Amanda Stepto, Stacie Mistysyn. Yeah, how I ever thought I was straight is a bit of a mystery.

State Like Sleep    [trailer]
A woman grapples with the consequences of her celebrity husband's double life after he commits suicide.
I wanted to like the film, but it wasn't able to keep my interest. It tries to be about grieving and also to be mysterious. But it's unclear to me what kind of movie this really wants to be.
And once I got detached, I noticed lots of unintentionally funny scenes and dialogue. Especially the temper tantrums of the mother-in-law and scenes involving Luke Evans.
The apartment wasn't cleaned up for a year? "You smell like the sun". Hmm, what?

VIDEODROME 1983 Horror/Sci-fi #1 of 500 Directly out of the gate. David Cronenberg does not disappoint with “Videodrome“ starring James Woods and Deborah Harry, it plays like a hallucinogenic fever dream laced with torture, porn, and murder. Max Renn Is a television executive for channel 38 Civic Ttelevision who was looking for the outrageous and unconventional to boost television viewership. In his feverish search he runs across Videodrome, a scrambled television channel that he soon finds is out of Pittsburgh, and broadcasts, what he considers, a captivating blend of torture and murder. Max uses all of his resources to hunt down the people responsible for the channel to make them an offer to broadcast on channel 38. When Nicki (Deborah Harry) his girlfriend, a quirky sadomasochist who he runs into during a live television talkshow, goes missing after stating she’s auditioning to be on the program, things take a disturbing turn for the worst. Seeking ownership of channel 38, Harlan (Peter Dvorsky) and Convex (Leslie Carlson) use Videodrome’s hallucinogenic programing as a mind control to direct Max to eliminate the other executives at the television session and ultimately take control of the airwaves to broadcast their cancerous programming. “ Long live the new flesh! 📺 📺 📺 📺 📺 James Woods - Max Renn Deborah Harry – Nikki Brand Leslie Carlson – Barry Convex Peter Dvorsky - Harlan Sonya Smiths – Bianca O’blivion Jack Creley – Brian O’blivion Lynn Gorman – Masha Julie Khaner – Birdey Budget $5.9 Million Box Office $2.1 million #videodrome #jameswoods #deborahharry #davidcronenberg #horror #film #horrorfilm #horrormovies #vhs #cultclasaic #criterioncollection #bluray #longlivethenewflesh #podcastersofinstagram #podcast @mindatpeace13 (at Haverhill, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb1NWa2sHga/?utm_medium=tumblr
