Please, can you leave our wombs out of this?
Loading "But then again when it comes to balancing family responsibilities with work and tackling the myriad challenges that parenthood presents, we tend to frown upon those who espouse views when they have no personal experiences to draw upon. Good leaders need not be parents, but childless leaders invariably lack one of the most important qualities of leadership: empathy. I contacted Ms Ashmors campaign to see if she still holds the view that leaders without children lack empathy 12 years later. She did not respond. As someone who went through IVF, having been told there was a good chance I could not conceive due to severe endometriosis, her words cut deep. Although I was eventually able to conceive, I faced the very real possibility of remaining childless, and I know many women who havent been so fortunate. To suggest a woman without children is a sub-standard leader and we are talking about women here, because mens professional competence is rarely, if ever, based on their fertility is not only the exact opposite of empathy, its also plainly wrong. Julia Gillard didnt need to have children to realise that state action could make enormous improvement to the lives of vulnerable people. Two signature achievements of Julia Gillards government the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and the National Disability Insurance Scheme are fine examples of policy driven by empathy. As prime minister, Julia Gillard didnt need to have children to realise that state action could make enormous improvement to the lives of vulnerable people. On the other side of politics, I imagine some of Ashmors child-free female Liberal colleagues, such as Julie Bishop and other past and present members of cabinet, might also have something to say about her judgements about their leadership. As ABC TV presenter Julia Zemiro tweeted on Wednesday: Im a leader in my community. I am childless. How do you judge that we lack empathy? Aside from the insensitivity of such a remark to women who desperately wanted children but were unable, Ashmor is also invalidating the many women who are child-freeby choice. We need to afford the same courtesy to women who choose not to have children as we afford to men, which is to all agree that whether someone wants children is none of our business. We need to afford the same courtesy to women who choose not to have children as we afford to men ... to agree its none of our business. Ashmors views and continued silence about her comments are all the more disappointing because all women know, whether they admit it or not, what its like to face gender discrimination. Loading She must know just how tiring and frustrating it is for a person's worth to be defined by what they have or have not chosen to do with their uteruses. Women who have not had children are considered somehow defective, and women who do have children and pursue demanding careers apparently lack commitment to their job, their families (or both). Women can only win the fight for equality by sticking together and collectively rejecting gender discrimination. If we indulge in mummy wars, fertility wars, beauty wars or any other wars devised to divide us, we all lose. A woman's maternal status has nothing to do with her capacity to lead, nor is it relevant to public policy and good government. It doesnt matter what side of politics you are on or who you vote for, wedging women is indefensible. Kasey Edwards is the author of The Chess Raven Chronicles under the pen name Violet Grace. Mirka For Melbourne – We Did It!
Mirka For Melbourne – We Did It!
by Lucy Feagins, Editor
To put it bluntly, we’ve been completely overwhelmed by the response to our Mirka for Melbourne campaign. We really weren’t sure we would even meet our initial target of $100,000, but it soon became clear that the groundswell of love and affection for Mirka would bring this campaign home – and indeed it did!
It’s impossible to overstate the sheer power in numbers here; donations from $2 all the way up to $10,000 were received, along with countless comments and emails about Mirka and her incredible legacy. We’ve heard from children and adults with cheerful memories of Mirka, friends of the Mora family, local businesses and creatives keen to throw their support behind the campaign, along with a whole lot of people who were simply compelled to be part of this movement. It’s been truly remarkable.
In total, Heide was able to secure 31 important auction lots prior to the auction, and a further 12 significant pieces at the auction itself (only a small fraction of these are pictured here). Additionally, they were able to secure one key painting directly from the Mora family, and a huge archive of letters, sketchbooks and paperwork from Mirka’s archive.
Once the works arrive at Heide, they will be cleaned and conserved, before being displayed at the original farmhouse, Heide I. The house will be entirely given over to a Mirka display, so that the public can see them as soon as possible. This exhibition will be free of charge for visitors – we’ll be sure to let you know when it’s ready for viewing, and we look forward to seeing you there!
From all of us here at TDF, and on behalf of the team at Heide MoMA, we want to say the biggest THANK YOU!
Something extraordinary happened here, and it’s all thanks to you!
.
Specials thanks to all those who have helped us bring this campaign to life – Paris Thomson, Andre and Jason at SIRAP, Esther Navarro Orejon of  The Project Agency, Lisa Gorman of Gorman, Beci Orpin, Kendrah Morgan, Lesley Harding and Barb Taylor at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Guy Grossi and Loredana Grossi of Grossi Restaurants, Lachie at Tolarno Eating House and Bar, Karl at Lantern Printing, Sebastian at Love Police, Julia Zemiro, Phillipe Mora, William Mora and the Mirka Mora Print Shop.
