It took me a couple days to compile them but here is my first round of head canons:
- so many charity shops while in college! basically everything they all wear is bought second hand (Jude always feels too bad to haggle with the sellers and tries to donate anything he doesnt use enough back)
- Jb gets light freckles in the summer
- Like Harold, julia never expected to be a mother
- Harold started cutting Julias hair for her when they began dating: just small trims before he got better at it and is now able to do it consistently decent job
- The first book Jude read in his dorm was the brothers karamazov
- in boston, malcom and jude would stay up late doing puzzles which they spread out onto the already tiny floor
- Jude and malcom are the two who read the most out of the group and jude gets a lot of his book recommendations from malcom
- malcom had a phase of trying to smoke cigarettes in college but let it go after 3 months
- in college. Jb pierced willems ear with a safety pin but it was soonly taken out after getting infected
- malcom sends out an elaborate christmas card from the group. harold keeps it in his desk drawer
- all the way through undergrad to law school, harold kept birds as pets
- harolds new york accent is subtle and mainly comes out when hes laughing
- malcom and willem can always fall asleep on airplanes, jb and jude never can
- jude attentive when it came to taking care of the others if they were sick, making them meals and fussing over their temperature
- one year in college, jb gets really into sewing and tries (and partially succeeds) to make a couple sweaters for willem
- I love the bit about Julia (and willem) loving the outdoors and I like to think that she grew up spending a lot of time in rural areas: maybe staying on her aunts farm and fishing and tending to the animals
- Harold keeps jude’s graduation photo in his home study, his work office, and his wallet
- Both Harold and Judes hair started graying decently early
- Once harold adopted him, Jude tried to learn a bit of yiddish
I also saw that someone asked for domestic jude/willem HCs so here are a few of mine:
- when touching, jude always like to have a hand on willems neck or face— he likes feeling the warmth and having the sense of comfort that its because of him
- I love the line about willem touching judes eyebrow and I think he sometimes will repeatedly do that when jude is tired but can’t fall asleep
- Once sex is established as not part of their relationship, jude can relax more into light hearted physical affection: willem scattering kisses on his collar bones until he gives into the ticklish feeling and laughs, mindlessly leaving a gentle hand on willems stomach in the morning, willem sleepily nuzzling into his neck
- jude mumbling to himself while he reads and willem feeling drunk on the sound
- Willem and Jude like to go see community theatre shows when they have time to support the young actors
OooHHHHH I love these headcanons and I have some Things To Say about them
Harold cutting Julia’s hair
- oh man. Oh MAN. that is too adorable. I love that so much. Cutting his wife’s hair for her STOPPP. Imagine Jude watching them, amused at his parents antics. Maybe you should quit professorhood and become a hairstylist Harold. he just tells Jude quiet you.
Jude and malcom are the two who read the most out of the group and jude gets a lot of his book recommendations from malcom
- now this is the one headcanon I can’t see at first. It’s said in the book that Jude and JB are the novel readers of the group. Malcolm on the other hand, actively refused to engage with literature as a rebellion against his mother (who I think is a literary agent?) and as a result, is more behind than the others when it comes to literature (i.e. discovering post-modernism much later than they did). However, that being said, this could be such a cute concept of Jude (being the one who loves literature and novels the most) helping introduce Malcolm to a love of literature and then Malcolm discovers his own favourite genres and authors and series and recommends them to Jude. Malcolm could be the one who’s more into contemporary literature, while Jude is very much a classics lover
malcom had a phase of trying to smoke cigarettes in college but let it go after 3 months
- MALCOLM AND HIS PHASES !!! The poor boy desperately trying to figure out who he is. I have not forgotten his college attempt of trying to grow out an Afro but it ending up stringy and flat. Malcolm going through every phase imaginable in college and his friends watching and trying to be supportive (well. not JB. He’s fully mocking him every chance)
Harold keeping birds as pets
- gonna be an angsty little shit about this. Brother Luke also kept a bird as a pet. ;) parallels in Jude’s father (“father”) figures oh man
Harold’s New York accent is subtle
- HAROLD AND HIS NEW YORK ACCENT. I absolutely see Harold having a noticeable NY accent, seeing as he’s an older generation too and I think older NYers usually have thicker accents. Im walkin’ ‘ere! >:(
malcom and willem can always fall asleep on airplanes, jb and jude never can
- NEITHER CAN I !!! I’ve slept on planes on rare occasions, mostly when I was younger. But now? The seats are just too uncomfortable and I don’t want to sleep anyways. I could see Jude finding a lot of difficulty with plane seats because of his back. JB, I imagine, is like me; just too excited on the plane to fall asleep (I love air travel it’s so fun). Willem’s probably that guy who as soon as he sits down, puts on an sleep mask and takes a sleeping pill and just. Knocks right out. Malcolm just ends up falling asleep after watching some movies.
Harold keeps Jude’s graduation photo on his desk
- YES YES YES. I wrote a fic about this hehe
Both Harold and Judes hair started graying decently early
- From the stress they both endured in their lives :(. I’d imagine Harold’s hair started greying when Jacob fell ill. It’s said he would get so upset with grief and anger that he’d become sick, so greying prematurely is very much possible. Jude, we already know why he’d be greying. His body just carries stress constantly
jude mumbling to himself while he reads
- Jude being a mumbler reader……..oh my gaush. I love. His voice would probably sound so comforting

1250 followers gift - take a peek at my medievalish fantasy game (part 9/?)
part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4 | part 5 | part 6 | part 7 | part 8
Today we pay a visit to the Spies. :)
Apparently I can't even keep a schedule of posting once a month a pic of my neighbourhood. Hats off to people who regularly post their gameplay - you guys are titans!
The family lives in an exclusive apartment. They can afford the high rent with no effort - they are the wealthiest family in the entire city. Their illegal activities pay off handsomely.
They are also the only family living within the city walls that arrived from another state after the civil war had ended. Jagna and Eric moved in as a freshly married couple looking for oportunities in their respective careers in a state which wounds haven't fully healed yet. Their children were already born in the city.
They are also the only parents wealthy enough to send their children to university, which they are going to do once their young ones are not so young.
Eric (the man in green suit) is Jagna's husband. He is a professional spy. Despite his strong dislike for children, he has three of them (or so he thinks). He has a rocky relationship with his wife - he had cought her cheating on him with Caligula Claudius when the prince hadn't been a fugitive yet. The situation had almost ended with a divorce, but the couple mended their relation ship and he fell for Jagna once more. And a result of their mended relationship is Barnaba. Eric was at first wary of the boy, who looks much different from his siblings. But then, Barnaba looks like Jagna's copy with no signs of Caligula, so Eric accepted him as his son. Eric is a friend of Flora Elf. His personality is 4/3/7/5/6, brave, dislikes children, hot-headed, genius and light sleeper. He's got 4 points of cooking, 3 points of mechanical skill, 4 points of body skill, 6 points of logic and 4 points of cleaning. His aspiration is popularity.
Jagna (the red-head woman) is Eric's wife. Around the time Danka was born Jagna had an affair with Caligula Claudius, but Eric found about about her romance. As a result, Jagna had a fight with Caligula (and lost it). Then she had a heated argument with Eric, but their marriage survived the turmoil. Later Jagna rekindled her relationship with Caligula, this time managing to keep it from Eric. She got pregnant and ended her relationship with Caligula (being the only woman to do it faster than Caligula), but she remains friends with now-banished prince. Her other friends are Zuzanna Watch (it's good to have a connections among nobles) and Flora Elf. Jagna is a high-profile criminal and a licensed potion seller (or rather poison maker). Her personality is 3/7/6/6/3, ommitment issues, heavy sleeper, genius, hydrophobic and unlucky. She's got 6 points of cooking, 4 points of mechanical skill, 5 points of body skill and 6 points of creativity skill. Her aspiration is wealth.
Kleofas (the brown-haired boy) is the eldest child of Jagna and Eric. His friend is Victoria Claudius. His personality is 3/7/5/6/7, brave, genius and no sense of humor.
Danka (the girl with braids) is the middle child. She's friends with Julia Claudius, Virgilius Darius and Aegon Elf. Her personality is 7/2/6/10/3, genius, absent-minded.
Barnaba (the toddler) is the son of Jagna and Caligula Claudius. His personality is 5/9/3/8/6.

Oii!

TAZ November Celebration 6: Truth
Just a short, kind of silly one for this @taznovembercelebration ficlet! My card was "truth," so here's one about Magnus trying to lie, to the despair of actual professional liar Taako.
Taako was a champion liar. It was a skill he'd honed through years of practice and one that had saved his ass more times than he could count. He could lie unabashedly, about anything, to anyone, and he'd do it while looking them straight in the eye. He had once convinced Barold that he was both SCUBA and forklift certified.
This deception-based superpower of his had only one weakness, and that was one of his dumbass friends opening their big mouth before he could spin his web of lies. Unfortunately, this was precisely the situation he now found himself in.
He had been helping Magnus pick out an engagement ring, and doing–in his opinion anyway–an excellent job at keeping him somewhat sane. No, Julia wouldn't care if the stone was lab-grown. Yes, the whole ‘three-month salary' thing was made up by diamond sellers. No, Julia wasn't one of those penguins that courted each other by exchanging rocks, and she would probably say yes even if he proposed with something from Dollar Tree.
Everything had been going rather well, all things considered, until the shop bell rang and in walked Julia herself. Her face lit up when she saw them.
“Julia!” Magnus exclaimed, completely failing to look unsuspicious. “What are you doing here?”
“I'm picking up my dad's watch for him, he sent it here to get the band fixed. What are you doing here, hon?”
Taako opened his mouth to deliver one of his trademark bulletproof cover stories, but before he could get a word out Magnus charged ahead with his own panic-fueled explanation.
“I'm helping Taako!” he said. Not a bad start. “Pick out a gift!” Plausible, even if Magnus wasn’t too high on the list of people Taako sought jewelry advice from. “For his boyfriend!”
Ah, fuck, there it was. Rule one of crafting a believable lie: don't invent something that will invite a lot of follow-up questions. And that was exactly what Magnus had just done, as evidenced by Julia's face lighting up like a neon sign.
“You didn't tell me you were seeing anyone!” she exclaimed.
Taako jerked his head noncommittally. “Eh, you know me, I tend to keep it pretty chill.”
“But you like this one?”
“Yeah, he's pretty great.” Well, he wasn't going to have a shitty imaginary boyfriend.
Julia shifted her canvas grocery bag to a more comfortable position, signaling that she was prepared to discuss this for a while. “Well, what's his name?”
“Kravitz.” Hmm. He just sort of had that one ready to go, huh? That would warrant a little pondering later. Then, because he knew Julia wasn't going to be satisfied with just that, he added, “He's a cellist.”
“Wow, that's awesome! You'll have to introduce us sometime. In fact,” she laid a hand on Magnus’ arm. “We're having a little get-together on Saturday, just a few of us. I don’t want to push, I know meeting the friends can be weird, but I’d love it if you and Kravitz could come!”
“For sure,” Taako said, his control of this lie slipping with every second. “I mean, I'll have to check in with him about his work schedule, he's pretty busy right now.”
Julia nodded. “Well, I hope you can make it! Good luck with your gift shopping.” She gave Taako a smile and Magnus a peck on the cheek before walking over to the store clerk. As soon as her back was turned Taako glared at Magnus.
“What?” Magnus mouthed with a shrug. Taako rolled his eyes and pretended to peruse the men's rings until Julia left the shop.
“So,” Magnus said once the coast was clear, a broad grin spreading across his face. “Tell me about this Kravitz guy.”
Right, Kravitz. Taako’s hot goth neighbor Kravitz. Kravitz, who really was a professional cellist, with strong hands that Taako could imagine doing all sorts of things. Kravitz, who he saw at the farmer's market sometimes, who always asked him what mushrooms to buy or which wine went best with whatever he was making. The guy he had completely normal, neighborly feelings about.
Taako rolled his eyes. “There’s nothing to tell, my man. I had to tell her something to cover up your shitty lie.”
Magnus had the audacity to look hurt. “What was wrong with it?”
“Well, for starters, you’re making me fabricate an entire relationship in four days.”
“I mean, you could just tell her you’re busy.”
He waved this suggestion away. “No, no, I can make it work, you’re just gonna owe me for it.”
Magnus’ shit-eating grin returned, undeterred. “Okay, but you gotta let me be the best man at yours and Kravitz’s wedding.”
Taako glared at him. “That’s gonna be real hard to do from six feet under, Burnsides.”
Little though Taako felt he deserved it, he helped Magnus through the rest of the ring-choosing process. He settled on a reasonably-priced sapphire with a silver band molded into the shape of a flowering vine, and he left the store with the box clutched in one hand like he never intended to put it down. Once they climbed into his truck he stopped for a moment and turned to Taako with an uncharacteristically serious look on his face.
“Hey, I really do appreciate you doing this,” he said. “It means a lot.”
Taako shrugged. “Don’t mention it, my dude. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to find out if I’m going to have to move to a new building next month.”
He took out his phone and pulled up Kravitz’s contact information, which he had spent two weeks figuring out how to get. He had been planning to use it for a leisurely flirtation that would eventually end with him figuring out that Taako was the hottest thing since Pompeii. Instead, he pulled up their chat and prepared to send a message that would either get him blocked or into a stellar fictional relationship.
hey, so whats ur general opinion on schemes, plots, and shenanigans?

Dear non-incessant pool of experiences,
Today was a really good day. A day to be grateful for, a day to remember that I can change whenever I want to, I can do whatever I want to, I can be whoever I want to be. The choice has always been mine, will always remain mine. My time and energy solely depends on what I embody.
I stopped having pity on myself for not being around friends or having plans for new year. I created my own happiness by choosing to have plans that make me feel happy.
I went to a bookstore, Luna. It's a really cozy place with a ton of varying genre of books. I limited myself to spending 2k only. I got Noam Chomsky and Slyvia Plath's BELL JAR finally!!! I had to reject 8 other books. Upstairs is more fun than downstairs, but mind me downstairs display has some best sellers and Booker prize winners but no banned authors :(
The shop is owned by 2 sisters who are amazing readers. Maybe that is why the shop attends to readers' needs and is so cutesy.
I browsed through a few books; top-sellers of Han Kang's human acts in downstairs section. I went to upstairs section through a flight of stairs. There were beautiful chandeliers and paintings on the wall. Now, that's the poetry section. Omgosh! From Charles Bukowski to Vikram Seth, there were plenty of poems to quench my thirst. Then there was the classic literature section. The way those books were binded with hard cover and golden book tips show that the owners know their thing. Brothers Karamazov, Bronte sisters books, 1984, illiad, Zelda to name a few made my heart beat so fast that I almost decided to buy George Orwell's 1984. Touching the hardcover was so satisfying and the golden tips ✨️
Then there was the travel section where I found the traveling to Rome book which was fascinating and there goes into my kangaroo pouch. I pondered there for sometime and then I switched to politics section where this book of Noam Chomsky was a full on tease. Alas! I left them all to get it. Can you blame me over 'how the world works?'
There were cooking books of Julia Child and many other interesting sections. Children graphic novels were a fascination. On the display table, there was Simone de Beavoir's Letters to Sartre where she sends a bit manipulative and controlling but mostly vulnerable, devastated bunch of letters everyday to her Hubby. (-your charming being). I couldn't stop reading because hello - the author of Second Sex (the supposedly first manual of Feminist idealogy) and her letters invoked a sense in me that I could and should be doing the same. Hence here starts a tumblr post of my day-day confessions of experiences.
Well it was to be in kangaroo pouch! I got into fiction section now. Well, there was a bean bag where I sat and started reading and rejecting the books that there in my pouch. Noam Chomsky made it. I was obliterated because I couldn't get any more. But then again I started searching through fiction for a friend. Ann Cleeves, Samuel Bjork and some big names popped up but nothing compared to Japanese mystery or thriller. I found the one after going from food horrors, gender discrimination to guillotine murders to village of eight graves to decagon of house murders. I had already rejected Burial of Ghosts and the Wolf. I planned on gifting Butter Well, 'cause it's my name but food and obsession horror.. hmm.. not a first time gift,? Nah, I got a good thriller series based on Japanese police systems, their shortcomings and their strengths. Hope, he likes :)
Well now I took a few photos and trotted happily downstairs. I went to the other room where random books were there. Shashi Tharoor's one liners made me laugh but also it's not Naval Ravikant so enh.. I found my solace Bell Jar and I was done with book-shopping.
I got 2 cutesy magnetic bookmarks and a little something <3. The day was well spent and talking to someone about your day that is peak exhilarating.
I had dosa from OAT. I shared about my day. I came back to room to show the pictures. I was about to get started on reading but then I saw puppy getting sad so we planned on going to 10 Downing street pub. It was a thrilling experience where she drank some or few and we trash-talked, or wait, is it trash-talking if the person is pure trash?! So, correcting myself we were talking about her ex of an a'hole. A supposedly matured, dishonest man baby with good flirting skills. We danced our heart out and fill our bodies with much needed New Year celebrations 🍾 ✨️
We reached home around 1am and we hit our beds in a second.
Regards,
your charming, most dearest being ❤️

4. If you DNF any books, what was the pettiest reason you put a book down this year?
Normally, I finish every book I start reading because I hate the feeling of actively leaving something unfinished. But Look Who's Back by Timur Vernes was unbearable for me to read I had to put it down.
Basically the book is about Hitler coming back to life in present time. And this is going to be very SJW of me but I don't see how it is funny to read his xenophobic, antisemitic and mysogynistic views applicated to a modern setting. I get that the point of the book is another one (i.e. him becoming a (social) media phenomenon) but the first half is not about that and only him being racist and confused by modern life. Any time traveler would be the latter, and I really don't get what's funny about racism. At all.
I think the book is a bit of a real life piece of satire. What it criticizes is exactly what it exemplfies. After all, people found it funny to read a story about one of the most inhuman dictators on earth and the book was a best-seller.
8. If someone were to ask you what your top ten books for this year were, which would you choose?
(they appear in chronological order because I find it hard to rank them :'))
Bi - Julia Shaw
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid

Identitätskrise - Alice Hasters, Yellowface - R. F. Kuang, Elternabend: Kein Thriller - Sebastian Fitzek (terrible book, don't read it), Wie Wellen im Sturm - Alicia Zett and Imogen, Obviously - Becky Albertalli
24. What new releases are you looking forward to next year?
As I said, I am always a little behind with reading books so I don't really know which books are coming out next year :')
I might read the new Casey McQuiston novel, though.

1250 followers gift - take a peek at my medievalish fantasy game (part 8/?)
part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4 | part 5 | part 6 | part 7
Today we pay a visit to the Potters (a.k.a. Garncarscy).
The family lives in two buildings placed on one lot. One building was owned by the elders (on the right) and the other by adults with their children (on the left). As Michalina is the only remaining elder and Julian got married, Michalina moved onto 'adults' building, now living with Janusz and Patricia. Julian and Antoinette live in the what previously was 'elders' building with their son, Jerzy, and Joanna - Julian's youngest sister, who is a toddler.
The family is not so reputation and money oriented as the Burgeoisiees, so they live solely off their pottery shop.
Michalina (elderly woman holding a toddler) was Hugo's wife. She's Janka's mother. Life didn't go easy on her - first her husband died, then she witnessed the death of her daughter. Now she peacefully awaits her turn, but Death doesn't seem to be in hurry to claim her. Her personality is 4/7/8/3/3, absent-minded, adventurous, coward, night owl, workaholic. She's got 4 creativity points and 5 cleaning points, a golden pottery badge and a bronze sewing badge. Her first aspiration is family and secondary is knowledge. I suspect she will die of old age the next day.
Janusz (the man on the left) is the son of Barbara and Zdzisław. He was also Janka's husband, but he became a widower when Janka died during childbirth with Joanna. He still cannot cope with the loss of the love of his life, who returned as a ghost. He blames himself for her death - he's always wanted a big family and after the couple had two children - Julia and Julian, they tried for years for another one. When their eldest children were already teenagers, Janka gave birth to Patricia and Janusz couldn't be happier. However, a rumour quickly spread that Patricia wasn't his child, but Caligula's. Janusz doesn't believe that - Janka would never cheat on him, they were happily married, after all. Nevertheless, his pride was hurt and he started dreaming of another child. This time Janka managed to get pregnant relatively quickly, even though she was already a middle aged woman and people didn't belive she could get pregnant anymore. Unfortunately, there were complications when Janka was giving birth to the youngest one - Joanna, and she died due to them.
His personality is 4/7/8/3/3, artistic, genius, snob, vegetarian. He's got 3 cooking points, bronze cashier badge, bronze seller badge, bronze restocking badge and gold pottery badge. His aspiration is family.
Janka (green ghost) is the daughter of Michalina and Hugo. She was Janusz' wife. She also had an affair with Caligula and Patricia is the outcome of the affair. Before her death she had attended her eldest children weddings and met her first grandson - Daniel. After she died, she returned as a ghost, not able to leave her grieving husband and her youngest children alone. Her personality is 4/10/4/4/3, genius, hot-headed, hydrophobic, loves the cold, supernatural sceptic. She's got 3 cooking points and 3 creativity points, bronze seller badge and golden pottery badge. Her aspiration is family.
Julia is Janka and Janusz eldest child. She's not present on the picture, as she married Barbossa Kajet and lives with him and their children by the seashore. She's already got two sons - Daniel and Bogumił.
Julian (black-haired man) is Janka and Janusz' second child. He married his teenage sweetheart - Antoinette. The couple has a son - Jerzy. He is also friends with his brother-in-law, Barbossa Kajet. His personality is 6/8/3/4/3, loves the cold, snob, vegetarian, virtuoso. His got a golden pottery badge. His aspiration is family.
Antoinette Garncarska (Potter) née Bourgeoisie (woman holding a baby) is the eldest child of Jan and Anna Bourgeoisie. She's Julian's wife and Jerzy's mother, who is held by her. Her personality is 6/2/10/3/3, artistic, brooding, genius, loner. She's got 5 points of creativity and a silver sewing badge. Her aspiration is family.
Patricia (the girl in green dress) is the daughter of Janka and Caligula, but she doesn't know the banished prince is her father. She's friends with Victoria Claudius, her royal cousin, and Alice Magic. Her personality is 5/9/4/7/2, heavy sleeper, hydrophonic, lucky.
Joanna (the girl held by Michalina) is the youngest child of Janka and Janusz. She never got the chance to meet her mother in her corporeal form, but the ghost sometimes comes to play with the child. Joanna's personality is 10/7/2/3/3, evil, genius. Visits from her dead mother surely had and effect on her upbringing and contrary to what Janka tried to achieve, not a positive one.
Jerzy (infant held by Antoinette) is Antoinette and Julian's son. His personality is 10/2/3/8/3.
Three eldest members of the Potter family have already passed away.
Hugo (on the left) was the first one to die of old age. He was Michalina's husband and Janka's father. His personality was 2/8/2/6/7. He had a golden pottery badge. His aspiration was popularity.
Zdzisław (in the middle) was the second elder to pass away. He was Barbara's husband and Janusz' father. His personality was 5/8/6/3/3. He had a golden pottery badge. His aspiration was family.
Barbara (on the right) was the third to pass away. She was Zdzisław's wife and Janusz' mother. Her personality was 4/4/4/7/6, ambitious, animal lovel, hydrophobic, loves the cold, workaholic. She had a golden pottery badge. Her aspiration was family.
Next up, the Spies!

478. 93 things about 1993, part 4
(part 3)
(source)
18. ValuJet flies for the first time (October 26)
ValuJet's first flight was from Atlanta to Tampa on October 26, 1993. By 1994, the planes with their silly mascot on them had made 15 emergency landings! 1 On June 8, 1995 one of their ancient planes had an engine fire on the tarmac in Atlanta.
We all know what happened to ValuJet just 2 1/2 years later.
19. Kenneth Junior French kills 4 because of "gays in the military". (August 7th)
He got four life terms + an extra 35 years tacked onto his sentence.
Newsweek, February 8, 1993
20. Socks Mania
People went absolutely feral over Bill Clinton's cat, Socks. There was merch:
Such as this Socks cat food container (eBay seller passalong)
This Socks watch that I still remember seeing at my local Kmart in 1996. Yes, the battery was dead. (eBay seller ha-340226)
This socks doll I also remember seeing at Kmart on a family vacation in Ohio that I desperately wanted. (eBay seller 13navybeans)
I don't have the date on it, but here is a clip of kids petting Socks at Christmas.
21. Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett get married (June)
When Roberts returned to the set of The Pelican Brief following her wedding, the cast and crew (including co-star Denzel Washington) threw her a party in which they all wore shirts that read: "He’s A Lovely Boy … But You Really Must Do Something About His Hair" on the back. 2
They only lasted til 1995, but they were cute together.
22. Base Closings (March)
Growing up, I thought this was the first time bases closed in the U.S., ever. No, a whole bunch closed just a couple of years prior!
(source)
23. Florida tourists killed
The state government ordered that all company logos be removed from rental cars, and it abolished special license tags for such vehicles. Rental car agencies now give customers detailed safety brochures in English, Spanish, German and other languages, and they play tape recordings with similar messages over the public address systems in their rental offices every five minutes. 3
There was even a bit in the SNL episode (hosted by Shannen Doherty) where Phil Hartman played Disney's Michael Eisner, alerting tourists that you'll won't get murdered in northern Florida where Disney is:
Hi, I’m Michael Eisner, speaking to you from the Magic Kingdom here in Orlando. You know, for the last few months, Florida has been victim to a terrible tragedy: the horrific murder of nine foreign tourists in Southern Florida. We here in Northern Florida express our sympathies.. to the families of those murdered hundreds of miles away.. in Miami, the capitol of Southern Florida.
8 tourists were killed in 1993. 4
24. Miller Clear
Faced with lackluster sales, the Miller Brewing Company has ended its market test of Miller Clear, the brewing industry's first clear beer. "We're not manufacturing it any longer for the near term," Eric Kraus, a spokesman for the Milwaukee-based brewer, said on Tuesday. "We had a tremendous initial trial, but repeat business was not necessarily as good." The beer that has been made will be sold, but no more will be brewed, Mr. Kraus said. In April, Miller began test-marketing its clear beer in Richmond, Minneapolis and Austin, Tex. 4
(there's some more about it on Weird Universe)
25. Tonya Harding's dress pops (January)
Earlier this year, a snap on her costume broke at the United States championships. At the 1992 Olympic trials, her blades were mounted slightly out of position, leaving her stranded with a broken axel. Skate problems also delayed her arrival at the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France, where she finished a disappointing fourth. By 1993, fourth was the best she could do at the United States championships. 5

The date of birth for Julia Ringwood Coston, one of the first black women to edit a magazine, is unknown. We do know that she was named after Ringwood farm in Warrenton, Virginia, where she was born. While she was still an infant, Ringwood moved to Washington D.C. with her family and attended public schools there. She had almost completed school when her mother died and she was forced to withdraw.
In the spring of 1886, Ringwood married William Hilary Coston, a student at Yale University who eventually became a minister and writer. They had two children, a daughter, Julia R. in 1888, and a son, W.H. in 1890. The family settled in Cleveland, Ohio where William Coston was pastor of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. William Coston was especially encouraging of Julia’s writing interests and gave her advice based on his experience as a writer.
In 1891, Julia Coston, realizing that white journals ignored black interests and themes, decided to create her own journal: Ringwood’s Afro-American Journal of Fashion. Concerned with the suffering and hopelessness of black women in the South, she believed that press editorials could be effective in protesting their inhumane treatment. The twelve-page journal, which had a yearly subscription fee of $1.25, provided advice on homemaking, etiquette, and fashion.
Ringwood’s Afro-American Journal of Fashion carried illustrations of the latest Paris fashions along with articles, biographical compositions of outstanding black women and promising young ladies, instructive articles for women and their daughters, as well as love stories. At the time, it was the only fashion magazine for blacks in the world.
The journal received tremendous praise from its readers and other noted publications. In 1892, Rev. Theodore Holly, then living in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, wrote that Ringwood’s Afro-American Journal of Fashion was already the leading magazine in that nation while the Philadelphia Recorder declared the magazine a welcome addition to any home, white or black. Victoria Earle (later Matthews), a black New York society leader, wrote that the magazine was a major source for instruction and guidance in home organization.
Julia Coston strongly supported and encouraged women writers through her journal and allowed younger contributors to gain publication experience there. She also believed these writers were good role models for the journal’s target audience.
For two years, from 1893 to 1895, Coston published a second journal: Ringwood’s Home Magazine. It was not as successful as her fashion magazine though, and she eventually stopped publishing it.
