Sara, you have the HL Reveal Book. If anything what did it say about Quinn in general and did it mention anything more about his backstory?
Yes, there is! The way the book is formatted is they go in-depth on major characters as well as major storylines. They have a full spread on Quinn and his background and of course talk about his character as part of seasons two and three.
Here are some interesting pieces:
Quinn was originally brought in to kill Brody because the writers expected to kill Brody midway through season two. “As episode 4 was being written, the writers still entertained the idea that Brody would be killed off sometime during the season. So a character was needed who would eventually perform that act, which led to the creation of Peter Quinn.”
Then-director and executive producer saw Rupert for the lead role Sherlock Holmes of Elementary. “He would have been an edgier, darker Sherlock,” Cuesta says. The director was taken with the actor and told the casting director, “Sorry but I’m gonna have to cast this guy in Homeland.”
Meredith Stiehm on Rupert and Quinn: “He brought an anonymous feel to Quinn. He’s compelling because you just can’t place him…. My favorite line is her response to the ‘fucked Brody’ question: she says, ‘Oh, who did you fuck last night?’ and he answers, ‘An ER nurse, but I’m not that into her.’”
Chip Johannessen on casting Rupert: “Rupert doesn’t have the face of a scary guy. We wanted to cast a guy who could pass in the real world, without you going, ‘Oh, there’s an assassin.’ You think the opposite.”
Rupert on Carrie and Quinn’s season two bickering: “Through all that backchat and squabbling is a base of very deep mutual respect. They can smell the deep and layered intelligence in one another. Neither takes bullshit from anybody, and I think that links them together in a certain way.”’
About Great Expectations: “There are but few luxuries in that world: clean socks, cigarettes, and a good book,” says Alex Cary. “I wanted The Old Man and the Sea, but it would have cost too much to clear the rights.” Says Rupert, “It was also an interesting coincidence, because my childhood nickname was ‘Pip,’ and that’s the main character in that book.”
Rupert on Quinn’s moral code: “He is a law-abiding guy, and his law is not the same as ours. His law comes from a very quiet, secret place, but it’s still his law, and he follows it to the letter. If an order changes at the last minute, it changes at the last minute.”
Rupert kept an unseen box cutter of his own in his pocket during filming the knife seen in “Q&A.” “It made me feel more dangerous. I didn’t tell Damian,” he says. It was also his third day of filming on the show. “I missed my alarm. I hadn’t met Damian, I hadn’t met anyone really. There we were, these two Brits, pretending to be Americans, in a dusty basement made of wood pretending to be stone, sitting in Charlotte, pretending we were in Washington.”
About the tuna scene: “We actually had a scene, which I cut, where he calls Julia to tell her he misses her,” says Michael Cuesta. This was replaced by the tuna scene, which was an homage to Alex Cary. “That’s something I do. I walk around the office with a can of tuna, which has been the source of much joking.”
Lesli on Quinn’s moral quandaries in season three: “Quinn his someone who’s stuffed down his emotions for years, and all of a sudden, he’s not able to do that in quite the same way. He’s seriously questioning what was going on in the CIA now. Between watching what’s going on with Carrire and the CIA bombing, now killing the kid, this guy, who’s basically an assassin, is suddenly thinking, ‘I don’t know if I can do this anymore.’”
