Jukka Eskola Soul Trio - Steamy! - soul-jazz from Finnish trumpet-organ-drums trio (Timmion Records)

With "Steamy!" Jukka Eskola Soul Trio reaches its second album on Timmion and delivers another sure-shot for the soul jazz thirsty masses. As with his first self titled debut, this troupe of premium Finnish jazzers turns all the relevant corner stones of soulful and progressive jazz, never running too far up the deep end, but always harnessed with expressive sensitivity and professional cool. It's like the 1960's and 1970's global jazz movement got condensed into a radiant ball of hipness, heady and completely unpretentious. In addition to the two single releases "Tiny B" and "Stick Of A Branch" Soul Trio dip their groove jazz chops into numbers such as "Five On Three", the shuffling "Jongo Street" and the fatback funky "Steamy". There's also a strong strain of Brazil on several tracks from bossa nova to richly percussive rhythms. On the over 7 minute long "Smash" they mellow out into a beautiful mood that sounds like John Patton swinging with a bunch of European cats. There's even a few studio tricks that we'll leave for the listener to discover.   Calling the Soul Trio a group of virtuosic players is an understatement as all of them have been working at it on a professional level since the 1990's. Trumpetist Eskola and drummer Teppo Mäkynen were both a part of the Helsinki nu jazz movement of the time, which later evolved into the now iconic Five Corners Quintet, while organist Mikko Helevä has hammered his Hammond in underground Finnish jazz funk groups for as long as his two band mates. Together they cook up a stew, which is like a bowl of perfect bouillabaisse, rich with flavour and with nice bits to chew on.

have definitely seen a lot of comments from people over the years who were really into Rouge’s music from Sonic Adventure 2, but had a hard time finding more music like it - after all, Jazz is an ENORMOUSLY storied form of music with all sorts of different branches and labels that people don’t like to use to any meaningful extent, so here are some albums that I’ve picked up over the years that carry a lot of the same vibe (if not always 100% spot-on) that make me think of those tunes, or at least carry a similar vibe.

Jukka Eskola Soul Trio - Introducing The Soul Trio

Jukka Eskola (born 1978) is a Finnish trumpet player who ranks among the most sought-after jazz artists in Finland. He has become known as the leader of the Jukka Eskola Quintet, Jukka Eskola Orquesta Bossa, and as a member of The Five Corners Quintet, Finland’s most successful jazz outfit to date, plus the live band of Jimi Tenor, to name but a few. He is widely considered as one of the key instrumentalists of his generation in Finnish jazz. Eskola’s solo albums ”Jukka Eskola” (2005), ”Hub Up” (only released in Japan, 2006), ”Walkover” (2009), and “Jukka Eskola Orquesta Bossa” (2013), have stabilized his position at the forefront of internationally noted jazz from Finland. He also released the collaborative album ”Lampela X Eskola” together with composer Jussi Lampela in 2010. Jukka Eskola is also a very used session player in the Finnish TV and recording scene, and has played in well over 200 albums.

Eskola’s latest musical endeavor is Jukka Eskola Soul Trio, whose debut EP is released in 2016. The ensemble is currently touring, please see GIGS for more.

Tiny B by Jukka Eskola Soul Trio

With one of the hippest jazz albums of recent years under their belt, Jukka Eskola Soul Trio is back with a fresh new single. It's truly a double-sider of the highest order, as both of the tracks deliver a completely distinct flavor. "Tiny B" on the A side is a neat bossa jazz number, and as usual in top of the genre, the lightness serves only as a facade.  The composition starts to evolve before the listener gets too comfortable, transitioning into a beautiful cinematic section, which is followed by tight solos by Eskola on trumpet and Mikko Helevä on organ. The trio rises beyond its numbers, as the maestro Teppo Mäkynen overdubs his drumming with added percussion and vibes. Hiding on the B side is a furious jazz dance burner, which sees the trio rise to energy levels that surpass even Five Corners Quintet in their tightest form. "Stick of a Branch" is highly syncopated business that takes its cues from a sound refined by 1970's independent afrocentric jazz groups.  It's a style, which is inherently modernist, without a slightest interest in mass appeal, and firmly rooted in the blues. Musicalmente hablando tiene como referente a bandas como: Katatonia, Swallow The Sun, Tool, The Ocean and Pain Of Salvation, esto por nombrar a algunas. Las letras de las canciones son compuestas en finés, este proyecto ha contado con varios cantantes invitados por tal motivo, la banda crea una canción a la vez, para entregar material de calidad y de acuerdo a lo que sucede en el mundo de “Alase” en ese momento.

En este momento la banda se encuentra trabajando en su álbum debut titulado "Vastaus" (The Answer) en inglés, la mayoría de los integrantes de la banda viven por varias partes de Finlandia, por tal motivo, todo es realizado vía control remoto, menos las presentaciones en vivo.

La grabación del álbum en este momento está estimada para el otoño del 2018, con la finalidad de tener todo listo y poder presentarlo a los sellos discográficos sin ningún problema. Uno de los retos que enfrenta “Alase” en estos momentos, es la falta de un baterista dentro de la alineación, han tenido que recurrir a músicos de estudio como es el caso del baterista “Toni Paananen”, que los ha apoyado en este proceso.

El álbum se va a componer de 8 canciones, entre ellas 2 son instrumentales y las otras 6 contienen diferentes vocalistas invitados, los cuáles se irán anunciando en el transcurso del año, en este trabajo llamado "Vastaus", planean incluir canciones en finés e inglés, esto por primera vez en su carrera.
